DVI vs HDMI

I am considering the purchase of the DTV HR 10-250.

I have read that the best quality is received using HDMI.

I have a Hitachi HD set that is about 3 yrs old now. I only see a DVI connection available.

What is the difference between DVI & HDMI?

Is there a cable conversion available?

The HR10 comes with a HDMI to DVI cable. That is what I'm using and basically it's the same quality as HDMI. Except no audio on the same cable.

As he said - also, the HD10-250 comes with the converter cable as well, so you're covered.

Which means you need to run separate audio cables to the TV or A/V receiver.

I asked this before as well as in another forum. Never got a answer that was 100% sure.

I want to use a PC LCD monitor with DVI inputs the monitor resolution is 1280x1024 and the aspect ratio is 16:9. Should this produce a watchable HDTV picture from a HR10-250?

It should. Give it a try and report your results.

However, that monitor probably has square pixels, so 1280x1024 isn't really 16x9.

More info, my notebook has a widescreen LCD display and the resolution is set as 1280x800, which isn't quite 16:9 either.

I believe DVI and HDMI are identical except for the plug and the lack of audio carried thru on the DVI side. And HDMI standards is moving forward where DVI is pretty much dead.

I'll give it a try and report back ... I just wanted to try and get an informed answer. I don't want to damage the monitor, that is more important then anything.
