Well, it used to be $6.95 total... but now state tax is showing up in the TiVo billing...
So, depending on where you live, you could be looking at a bigger monthly price tag. Will change the lifetime vs. 2nd monthly calculations a bit. You could end up paying 13 months for 12 now in some states.

Actually, we're happy to pay taxes... there's lots of services provided and they improve community life.
Your comment got me thinking... I wonder if this is a change in state laws... or a change in TiVo's practices... We were initially surprised by the new charge as it wasn't the usual $6.95. I thought, "Oh, boy, TiVo used some fine print to up the monthly service charge!" And, in fact, they could, couldn't they?
I also started wondering whether some states had decided to START taxing electronic services... or decided to go after big providers of untaxed products.
Anyone know what is going on here?

All New York state and Texas state residents should be billed for tax since those two states do require we tax the service.

Mick, much thanks! Appreciate the helpful thread.
I actually searched for such terms as "sales tax", "$6.95", "monthly fee", etc. before starting this thread but didn't find anything.

This looks like a pretty good overview. (http://www.nolo.com/article.cfm/ObjectID/87F6DD43-E6F2-4DFE-BCDB8E2E85DFF80B/catID/4EE6A6F9-FECA-4AF7-A0E454029D2AEA58/111/277/167/ART/)
While it's Titled "Internet", I believe these issues apply to anyone selling goods or services to people in other states.
