When ever I transfer my shows from tivo to my pc the output is always 480x480 I am watching shows in a square resolution instead of the standard 4:3. Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a solution? Thanks.

The resolution maybe 480x480, but it normally plays with an aspect ration of 4x3. Don't ask me how it knows to do this. :p

I would try a different codec from whatever you are currently using and see if it works better.

It is the codec - the pixels shouldn't be square, so while it is 480x480 (or 352x480, or 720x480, depending on the TiVo and settings), it should all be 4:3. If it isn't, then the codec isn't playing it correctly.

You mean to tell me you can change tivo settings? I'm getting a tall and skinny display on my PC. But on the TV 36" tube style its fine. Whereabouts do you set it up on the Tivo?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has this problem.

The resolution is determined by the recording quality setting on your Tivo. That also determines the file size and picture quality. BUT everything still plays with 4:3 aspect ratio on your TV and on your PC.

If it looks screwed up on your PC, then some MPEG2 codec installed on your PC is to blame.

Normally, you can determine which codec is being used in WMP by playing a video and looking at File properties. (I've seen machines with such awful codecs that WMP would lock up when attempting to playback a .tivo file, aka MPEG2 file.)

The fix is to try a different codec. The Cole2K one I posted earlier seems to work for a lot of people. YMMV.

You mean to tell me you can change tivo settings?Best and High are usually 480x480, Medium and Basic are 352x480. (Best is 544x480 with some sources - I think if it is fed with S-Video.) DVD-RW TiVo units are 720x480 on Best and High, and 352x480 on Medium and Basic. But they're all 4:3.

Best is 544x480 with mine via S-Video. Although, I thought it had something to do with my source being Dish as well. Are all S-Video 544x480, or just S-Video from satellite? Not really important, just curious.
