Is there a new replacement policy for a DVR manufactured by TiVo, Inc? For quite a while there was a standard $79 replacement charge for a defective unit. In exchange was a refurbed unit of same size or better. If there was a lifetime sub on the defective unit it would be transferred to the refurbed unit. Now I am reading posts here on the forum that the replacement charge is much higher. Is this a new policy or are the agents who answer the phone given the freedom to charge what the market will bear? or what?

That was not my question. I can fix my own stuff, but still want to know the official TiVo policy. If one has a lifetime unit and is not into fixing it themselves then this policy becomes important.

No wise guy! I was replying to the following message I received via email:

Hello funtoupgrade,

Here is the message that has just been posted:

Most of the time the defective unit just needs the hard drive replaced, and you
can do that yourself for less than $79. I wouldn't even bother sending it back
to TiVo. You'll get a flaky refurb unit they fixed up real quick and tested for
about 2 minutes.

Since you got all cranky about it and said - That was not my question. I thought it would be funny to delete my original message and post -
