Size/Time limits on recordings

What length of recording have people been able to burn onto a DVD? I have assume that it could handle more than an hour of medium or high quality, but maybe I am wrong and that is why my recordings are failing.

Any information would be appreciated.

Not .tivo files....

but I just downloaded and burned six 1/2 hour episodes of Hbo's Extras (.avi) to DVD using Nero. Nero automatically reduced the quality to fit the content on the disk.
