With direct TV moving toward their own brand of a DVR what happens in a few years if your DirecTivo breaks. Will you just have to use what DTV has then even if is stinks?

Yup.

That's exactly what has happened to everyone who bought UltimateTV and have had them since break. They moved to TiVo, or now to the R15.

If it is other then a hard drive failure (thus something and end user can fixed), your DTivo will be out of warranty.... thus if you get anything from DirecTV for it, it would be what ever DVR they are using at the time.

And who knows what things will be like in a "few" (3 or more) years from now.
Their could be something complete different out there.

Since almost all DTivo failures are hard drive related, as long as I can buy IDE hard drives, I'm set. The only other failure I've seen is a failed power supply, but that is also replaceable.
