HDMI cable

Does the HDMI cable handle just video or is it both audio and video and eliminated the need for audio cables?
The HDMI cable that comes with the HR10-250, does it have a good history or should I purchase another prior to its arrival?

HDMI carries both video and digital audio. Whether that's useful to you depends on what's on the other end.

The cable that came with my HR10 seems fine, but some people report that none was included with theirs. Whatever you do, don't spend $100 for a 2-meter cable at retail stores.

My 1st HD receiver.
So if I connect the 10-250 to the HD TV with the HDMI cable can I then use the r&l audio out to connect to the stereo receiver? Will the audio out work if the HDMI is utilized?

It should, although I haven't tried it. I use HDMI to my TV, and optical to my audio receiver. Works fine.

Again, it depends on your TV. Some won't convert the digital audio signal to analog outs. I suggest not relying on this and connecting the audio to your receiver directly. Besides, you probably want 5.1 Dolby Digital, don't you?

Actually, if he's connecting the red/white L/R to his receiver (as he said above), I'm concluding he doesn't have a DD capable receiver. In that case, he'll turn DD off on his HR10, so the TV should get sound just fine.

Guess I didn't read closely enough first time around. You want to use HDMI for audio/video to the TV, then audio from the TV to your amp, I take it.

Sounds like you're correct about the TV. However, I vaguely remember something to the effect that HDMI devices aren't supposed to make what they receive via HDMI available externally, but I'm not sure what the details are. The irestriction is that high-definition video or audio can't be captured, but I'd think that standard, decoded, audio wouldn't count. I'm sure someone can add details.

Note that I'm not the original poster. My point was that the TV may not present analog audio out from an HDMI audio input. I don't know if that's true of all HDMI-equipped TVs or only some. It certainly isn't the design goal for HDMI.

I believe the OP meant:

a) Connect HDMI to TV
b) Connect HR10 L/R analog audio to AV receiver

If he sets the HR10 to no DD, then the TV should play all audio just fine, and the receiver will get all audio as well. His original implication is his receiver can't play any DD/DTS source, so he doesn't want to use the optical out, and as such would turn DD off on the HR10 anyway.

And that should work. (I don't think he was going to daisy-chain the L/R from the TV back to the AV receiver.)

One last question before the 10-250 arrives.
Once I set up the 10-250 do I set the system for 720 or 1080.
I can't figure out which is right. I'm thinking of leaving my R10 connected to the same TV for SD and only use the 10-250 for HD viewing.

Depends on what your TV runs best at.... It would be a personal preference... Me.. I just leave it at 1080i

As for "buying" and HDMI cable.

Ebay... and DON'T by a monster cable.

Also... Honesty with the HDMI issue still in some HR10-250s.. Rule out componenet first, before spending the money on an HDMI cable.
