What an awesome start to the season. I love how the season started off with a bang. From begining till the end the whole episode was epic. I love the pool on dani's baby classic barn. Vic using the tazer on that kid was brutal effective and awesome to watch. I love how IAD brought lem in right away I was worried they would screw around half the season under cover trying to get evidence on Vic. I like how IAD is going right at Vic and the strike team. Even if the cop tina has a thing for dutch he will blow it some how and it will be funny as hell. I wonder what is wrong with claudia because of all those meds.

Afterthought: I also noticed they're pulling the 24 thing.
In "about 4 months", they want Vic to retire. Amazing how The Shield generally lasts around, oh, FOUR MONTHS.
Like when Jack Bauer says, 21 minutes before the end of the episode, "We need to defuse this thing or it'll go off in 20 minutes!"

Ok so Lemonski is confronted with the Heroin...
Didn't that fake heroin substitute (that Curtis now knows was courtesy of IAB) end up getting someone killed? The fact that he leveraged the drugs to get information re: a more serious crime is proof that he did NOT steal it.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned that sorry excuse for a captain. Must be a politician all the way. I can't believe he was ever in a uniform. What a dork. Wonder who will replace him?
The best part was when Vic turned that hose on those rioting kids.
I think frying the metal bar the kid was attached to was pretty good too. "i never touched him your honor!"

Well when the new girl said she can learn a lot from him, first thing i thought of was how to kill a cat.

Ahh, the Shield did not disappoint last night. This season looks like another hit! Wow, right off the bat some serious stuff, can't wait to see how it all plays out. I hope this is NOT the end of the series! They need to tie up other loose ends like the fourth member of the strike team that ended up in the hospital two seasons back.

Forrest Whitaker's character's mannerisms remind me of when he played Charlie Parker in Bird.
Man, Dude's just trying to buy a 40 and next thing he knows he's got Vic's gat all up in his grill.
Can someone explain Aceveda's motivation to help bring Vic down? He's not Captain any more. That, and Vic'll kill him.

Can someone explain Aceveda's motivation to help bring Vic down? He's not Captain any more. That, and Vic'll kill him. He's had it in for Vic since day one. Plus, Cavanaugh (Whitaker) said it to him -- you'll look great to the public because even though you're not still captain, you still care and want to clean up the department. Cleaning up police corruption will help his rep with the voting public.

Maybe vic saw his gun and prevented the robbery?
My guess is Ace would look pretty bad if it was proven that vic did naughty things under the nose of his capt. Either he didn't know what was going on, (that's bad) or he knew about it and did nothing (that's bad). But if he tried to get vic fired for a few years, but failed, that could potentially look like he was just playing out his cards and 'waiting to strike.'

Watching seasons 1-4 as they were re-broadcast every Saturday night over the last couple months REALLY helped me remember a lot of stuff. So I have most of the back story fresh in my mind going into this episode & that certainly paid off with a lot of the more subtle references.
Was dropping that strike team card on that guy they beat up very wise? Forest Whitaker's character is going to be a guy we love to hate.
Not a very smart move to drop the strike team card on the guy IMO, and that is the kind of thing that will end up catching up to them with IAD on their backs.
I already know that I am going to hate Forest Whitaker's character more than I hate Acaveda. He has this almost Rain Man-esque way of talking, moving, and smiling. The whole episode my wife kept saying, "I don't like this guy, he is a freaking weirdo." I understand he is trying to be smart & deceptive, but at the same time, he is just plan awkward.
Anyone notice Dutch boy had the same look on his face strangling that perp as he did the cat?
I think the cat episode (I think it was in Season 2) gave us a view into the fact that Dutch is smart, but he has his own deep seeded issues. He always was viewed as the pushover pussy until he took Billings down in the fight in the parking lot & challenged Vic to fight at the end of last season. I would look for his rage issues to grow this year.
Didn't that fake heroin substitute (that Curtis now knows was courtesy of IAB) end up getting someone killed?
The heroin belonged to a guy named Pretario. Lem stole the brick form him. He wound up dead & his girl (the new IAD CI that Vic is helping) was on the line for it because they thought she stole them. They returned the "fake" heroin to Pitarrio's boss & he let her off the hook.
Why hasn't anyone mentioned that sorry excuse for a captain. Must be a politician all the way. I can't believe he was ever in a uniform. What a dork. Wonder who will replace him?
He is actually the detective who was taking all of Dutch & Claudette's cases when they were on the DA's poop list & he was also the one who was too scared to stop the murder at the car wash last season. The chief wanted a yes man jellyfish & this guy certainly fits the bill.
Vic has more leadership than anyone in that house, but could you imagine the nightmare for the department if they put him in charge?
I think the card sets the tone for this year. Must be something new.
As was already stated, the cards are old. Vic first used them when he busted up the gang initiation in season 1. He did not use them much last season because he was on a relatively tight leash under Capt. Rawling (Glenn Close) and focused on situations where he did not need to draw attention to his team.
They need to tie up other loose ends like the fourth member of the strike team that ended up in the hospital two seasons back.
That got tied up. When he came out of his coma, they convinced him that he hit Shane's wife with an iron. He was convinced that he was the one that was hit (which he was), but they convinced him that he was so mistaken that he probably should not say anything to anyone & probably not come back. It sucked because I really liked the guy & I really dislike Shane.
I totally think that Danny's baby is Vic's.
It would make the most sense. In the second to last episode of season 4 (approximately 6 months prior to the season 5 premier), Vic was on a protection stakeout at Capt Rawling's house in the hood. Danny was with him. They started to kiss & enjoy some "mutual manual stimulation" in the car. If you remember from the first season, they used to carry on a pretty regular affair, so them sleeping together is not a far stretch at all.
I am just shocked that there aren't a bunch of little Vic's running around Farmington with all the tail that Vic is able to pull!
So forgive me for not remembering all of last season and being too lazy to look it up, but did Lem officially transfer back to the Barn? And what happened to Armie?
Capt Rawling had Lem transferred back to the Barn full time before the end of last season (after Vic exposed Shane's plan to kill him) because he was being so helpful with the seizures. Vic had to keep Lem distant because of the bad blood between him & Shane. When that was starightened out, he got him transferred back.
Army killed his career when he refused to take the polygraph & invoked his PBA union rights. As he refused, they told him that it would kill his career, so that gives us his exit.
Can someone explain Aceveda's motivation to help bring Vic down? He's not Captain any more. That, and Vic'll kill him.
Acaveda has had a hard on for Vic since day one because he could never control him. He hated that he was more liked & more respected in the house than he was, even though he knew (well, suspected) that he was dirty. Even when he became Councilman last season, he kept pushing Catp Rawling to sick IAD on Vic. I was actually more suprised by the fact that when Whitaker's character asked for his help that he simply said "You have my letter, that is all I want to say." I would have thought he would be jumping out of his skin to help IAD go after Vic.

Aceveda isn't so squeeky clean himself. His rape issues with the hooker might come up to bite him in the butt. Vic also threatened him with setting up the guy who assaulted him to be killed by Antwon last season. Those are only the things we know about. While he wants to get Vic, he may be more than a little worried that Vic's someone who can get him back.

I agree, Aceveda has some skeletons in his closet. But his hatred of Vic runs pretty deep. If there was a way for him to "out" Vic to IAD & somehow keep his name out of it, I would think he would look for that opportunity.
I loathe Aceveda every time I see him. He is a typical power hungry prick that cannot stand when people do not bend over backwards & bow down to him. I hope he gets burned by the hooker and the murder this season. I would also love it if Juan Rizano's girlfriend actually had the pictures of Acaveda blowing him & sent them to the press.

ok i found the quote as to why my co worker thinks this is the last season
• One of cable's most acclaimed series is back with the season premiere of The Shield (FX, 10 p.m. ET/PT). Having decided he's a liability, the department would like Vic (Michael Chiklis) to retire early, which seems unlikely to happen before the series finale.
then i found this other article
http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060110/ENTERTAINMENT12/601100303/1339/ENTERTAINMENT06
[QUOTE] The fifth-season opener of The Shield (9 p.m. today on FX) not only kicks off what's likely to be the show's final episodes, but brings things full circle for one of TV's all-time darkest, most fascinating anti-heroes.....FX has ordered 21 episodes, which will air in two batches — 11 now, and 10 early next year. During a two-month hiatus, Ryan and company will write the latter, which will likely conclude the series.
so we have at least one more 'year' of it.

I think writing the second have gives them some flexability on what is going to happen. I assume it is FX that is the deciding factor if it is going to end its run right? Michael Chiklis is the only real star and I haven't heard him say he wants it to end.

I was wondering why Forrest Whittaker was only signed up for 11 episodes but if Shawn Ryan hasn't even written the final 10 episodes then it is still possile he will be back after the hiatus.
Just like the Sopranos The Shield is really 2 seasons but being called one season since the final 10 episodes will be a continuation of the current season since many of the storylines will not be resolved at the break.

I also think it goes back to him strangling the cat. Dutch normally would of justsubdued the suspect and that would be it. The look he had said to me he wanted to kill this guy. There is no doubt in my mind if the others would of not pulled off dutch he would of killed the guy and enjoyed it. I've seen quotes from Shawn Ryan that make it very clear that it is HIS call when this thing ends. FX will go along with it as long as he wants.
