The DirecTV DVR User's Guide says that saving to VCR happens in "real time". Approx how long does it take to save a 2 hour movie to a DVD recorder?
Thanx

Let's see now ...
2 Hours in "real time" = 2 Hours.
I'd have to say - 2 Hours.

To clarify.... External DVD recorders work exactly like a VCR. They take the realtime analog video signal as an input, digitize it and burn it to a DVD. The only way to get faster results would be to have the DVD burner built in like the Humax, Pioneer and Toshiba standalone TiVos. However those are not DirecTV integrated so they work a little differently then a DirecTiVo. (i.e. they require an external DirecTV reciever to tune DirecTV channel and can only record one channle at a time)

Burning a 2-hour program depends on what quality setting your using and burning speed of the burner and disk.
In my experience Best quality - 2hour movie- will take about 1/2 hour.

in other words real time does not take advantage of a DVD 4x or whatever speed.
Though I watch Wedding crahsers the other night and was wishing real time could be scrunched 4x

As I said above that would only be the case if he had a TiVo unit with a built in DVD burner. Since he is using a DirecTiVo and an external DVD recorder the process is still realtime just like a VCR.

Ok, so if I just replaced my vhs recorder with a DVD/VCR combo recorder, if I choose the save to vhs option on the directv tivo unit, I can get it to record to the dvd instead of the vhs?
Finally used this the other day to save to vhs, boy I forgot the quality of video and decided that was enough.
