So i bought a tivo but did not want to subscription. For the first week it gave me all the service as if i had the subscription. But now it wont let me do anything except pause, rewind tv. I cant even record a show now. It says i have to activate to record full shows.

Is this true?

Yes. Unless you have a first generation Tivo you own a boat anchor until you pay for service.

Why did you buy a TiVo if you didn't want to subscribe to the TiVo service? A TiVo is nothing without TiVo service. If you pay for the lifetime service, you won't have another bill, ever...

It used to say something like this right on the outside of the box - TIVO SUBSCRIPTION REQUIRED FOR USE.

What, even though it said sub requires?

If you don't want to sub going in, you have the process backwards. You have to find what DVRs don't need a sub and go buy one of them.

The service is 100% worth the price.

Pay for a months service...use it a month or two and then buy the lifetime...

Once you have it 2 months, you'll never want to watch tv without one.

Wait until you replace the HD to have about 200 hours of storage and get about 75 season passes...

AWESOME!

Upgrading is cheap if you do it yourself. 200GB drives are around $90 and 300 GB is around $100-$130. Instant Cake will run you about $20.

What is Instant Cake?
An CD that contains a Tivo image and automated scripts to load and prep a hard drive(s) for a capacity upgrade.

Ahhh ok.

Well it looks like i might be getting the subscription maybe.

One question. I bought it off amazon and i think it was like through a third party not actually from amazon. But i see on tivo's webpage they are offerent 150 MIR with one year of service.

So anyone think i can get the rebate?

If you have the packing slip and the UPC off the box you can get the rebate. If you don't have those two items, you will have issues.

You also have to subscribe to TiVo service to be elligible for the rebate.
