Cooling fan not running...

Hi, just acquired a Series 1 and after I hooked it up I noticed the fan wasn't running. I haven't gone any further till I find out: Is the fan s'posed to run all the time or does it only come on as needed?

Yes, the internal fan should be spinning all of the time. You can buy replacement Tivo fans from http://www.weaknees.com.

Thanx for the reply. The seller sez that it only comes on as needed, something about being part of the energy star feature. It's a Phillips HDR 112. Sounds like there's some misrepresentation here.

The seller is wrong .... Tivo fans should always be spinning.

At one time, the fan would only come on "as needed".

But because the start/stop of fan noise would cause owners to call the support line, a software release some time ago changed the fan to "always on".

thanx. I'm showing software version 2.0.1-001-000. Do you know if that fan update was after this version or not?

I got my first TiVo 1/2001 and I think I got version 2.0.1 in 5/2001. My recollection is that the fan operation change happened after that.

Boy are they soaking you on the fan. I found a cache of them at a surplus stor for $5/pop.
