Nice. I love Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. It looks like both of those will be using the English track, instead of the original Japanese with subtitles, but the voice talent for the English track was very good so as to not be a liability.

I am hoping that they choose to use the Subtitles for at least one of each showing. But americans dont appreciate that kind of thing usually. But many of these I don't have on disc yet and can get good copies to add to my collection, cant complain about free.

What, no "Kiki's Delivery Service"?

I think "Spirited Away" will be the newest movie ever shown on TCM.

trainman - its a huge leap forwards for TV to show that many Ghibli films all at once. Don't jinx it for us asking for something else! ;)

I'd like to see Kiki again too to record for my collection. I already have Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoru, on DVD. And plan on getting Spirited Away finally (had it but it was borrowed).

The rest will be nice to fill my collection out with.

Highly recommended for anime and non-anime fans alike... all the stories are great some being more mature then others.

One of my favorite studios!!

but, you can set up a auto-record wishlist. I doubt "Totoro" is gonna come up anywhere else in the next 2.5 months.

I actually enjoyed "Spirited Away" more the second time I saw it than the first. It made more sense twice-around. Very 'trippy' movie... and well done too. :D

If you really want all the movies on DVD, look at this set on eBay. We love having a complete collection and we can watch in Japanese (or English when friends come over).

Based on the price and info here, I'd say it's a bootleg set:

I read through some of the feedback where people complained about bootlegs. The seller says they are legit. It seems a little fishy especially because they are so cheap. But we really wanted the movies for the kids, so we bought it.

I have the originals and compared them to a bootleg and there is no real noticable difference.... to save the money the bootleg is fine.

Since I was such a big fan I did get the original.

We need someone to resurrect this thread in late december to remind us to setup the programming on our TiVo's... I loved 'Princess Mononoke', Spirited Away. Spirited Away was so dramatically different than any other movie I had seen.

I assume my family will like the others as well.

Be careful about the Chinese bootlegs of these movies. They have "Engrish" subtitles. That is the translation in not the most goodly to understands. ;)

I didn't realize he made some of those movies. I loved Spirited Away. Some of his other stuff left me kind of indifferent, like the recent Howl's Moving Castle.

Totally forgot about this thread, thanks for the bump kewpie!

Need to check my wishlist and get these in the queue. Did you notice if they are adding info about subtitles vs dubs and all to them in the list?

According to the guide data, the evening showings are the dubbed versions and the early morning showings are subtitled. The schedule on the TCM website, however, lists both showings with the English voice talent, so I don't know who to believe.

I think I'm going to have to just record both and see which is which! lol. (all hail tivo)

I'll look tonight. But it appears the only thing in the tivo guide right now is Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. I would prefer to have the DVDs of these but if i can get them off the air for now that will be nice.

no nausicca fans? this movie sets the standard for all anime after it. i saw it as warriors of the wind way back on hbo a long time ago. it is very relevant today even. i bought my dvd the day it came out because the old vhs was horribly chopped but great nonetheless. any fan of his works should get this now.

That sounds like what I am reading as well. I am still going to probably record both showings just in case. A few of these I have been looking for like Only Yesterday, will be nice to have it finally.

Lauren - Your list may be correct... TiVo has two different listings for Spirted Away; one with the English voices... and the other with Japanese actors.

WOW! They are showing Whisper of the Heart 2 months before the DVD release?? I'll have to check it out, I love that movie. I wish they'd show Kiki instead of Porco Rosso. I don't really care for Porco.

Totoro has come and gone twice on DVD already. I've bought it both times, once for myself and once for a Christmas gift.

Next release date from Buena Vista is 3/7/2006, catalog no WD 25349, UPC 00786936175271.

Edited to add: highly recommend all these films. Gotta disagree with one thing above -- Porco Rosso is great. Pom Poko is an acquired taste, however. ;)

I watched Nausicaa last night. I'm not normally a big fan of animation, but I was very impressed with this. I recorded Castle in the Sky for later viewing and plan on recording the three more Mayazaki films that TCM will air on the 26th.

What wonderful films these are. I saw Spirited Away in the theaters and it was my introduction to his work. It was so unusual that I went back two more times to figure out what I really felt about it. I finally decided that my first impression was correct: it was a unique source of wonder. Quiet and melancholic but punctuated by sudden moments of sheer joy. And inspired character creation (human and otherwise).

I've seen four other movies now on TCM, each one a pleasure to watch. I haven't digested them yet after just one viewing, but here are some reflections:

Even the happy moments have something deeply sad in them. When the main character gets her (usually her) heart's desire there's usually another character who missed their chance long ago and we're left with the feeling that most longings go unfulfilled, therefore most fulfillments are precious. But, even those who miss their chance at great happiness are able to achieve happiness on a smaller scale. They find moments of hapiness that may be fleeting, but are precious and valued nonetheless.

Miyasaki is a master of the small. Little movements or expressions of the characters that add surprising depth. His characters are imperfect. They'll stumble or fumble with trivial actions that don't advance the plot, but he animates the imperfections anyway, because his characters have life and life is imperfect. And the long quiet moments where the characters do nothing and we're forced to do nothing with them are some of the best scenes in the movies.

Anyway, there are many more of his movies to explore and I look forward to it.

I, too, have been very interested in this series. Ran into a problem, however, with "Castle". It recorded to my hard drive, but will not burn to DVD. I've run into this problem several times before - the burner seems to "pick movies" that it refuses to record.

Is there anyone who can help me to get a copy? I'm struggling to survive on disability, and even a bootleg copy is out of my price range. Thanks!
