Ditto for me.
I just bought a wusb11 wireless adaptor... but the only place it lists a version number is on the disc that came with it. it says 2.0... will that work ?

Its been reported that the version number for the piece of equipment is either on the box or under the velcro strip attached to the unit.

The sad part about the Linksys version numbers is that they are NOT on the box. You have to get the little beast home before you aer working on upgrading your software for the Tivo box. I'm assuming that this is a driver issue. But I'm having a hard time understanding why it will take "up to five business days" to download a driver.

MtrRef, we are updating requests more frequently due to the holidays -- twice a day during business days. If it's taken more than 24 hours for you to get the update, please let me know your 15 digit TiVo Service Number and I will expedite. We are working to automate the process.

on monday I got a message on my tivo series 2 that 802.11 g is now supported. Does that mean that I can now use a linksys wusb54g adapter with it?

I'd rather know before I buy the adapter.
What options are available for configuring the wireless network?
I have a Linksys wireless-g router. I don't broadcast my network ID, and use WEP encryption. Will the TiVo configuration options allow me to set this all up?
Maybe I should be investigating using a hub and wireless adapter instead. So many options...

I received the same message as yannb this week. If I were at home, I would quote the message, but it essentially said that the service update I received "added support for some wireless 802.11g devices". It didn't state which devices, but said to visit "<tivo-home-page>/adapters" (sorry, this is my first post and it won't allow my to post a link) to see which new devices were supported. However, I don't see any change at that page at all, and, as far as I can tell, none of the listed devices support 802.11g. Does anyone out there know anything else? Any TiVo folks listening?
I just bought an 802.11b router, since it allows me to use my laptop and my TiVo without having to run a new phone line for the TiVo. I'm still in the 30 day return period, and would like to go with 802.11g if possible, but the window is shrinking every day...

I have not received the message but I wish it would I have a WUSB54G adapter sitting here waiting for it's new home, everything else in my house is either on 54g already or wired at 100. Tivo is currently on an older Netgear 11b adapter and needs to get off of it. :)

Misread. It says support was added for 802.11b adapters using some 802.11g routers. And I believe that was part of the earlier Spring/Summer updates. Oh well, wishful thinking I suppose.

I have the Toshiba unit, with a Linksys wrt54g router and the wusb54g adapter. I saw a couple of questions regarding compatibility with the adaptor, but no reply. Will that adaptor work? or do I need to get another? When I go through setup, there is no reference or place to work on network settings. Only Phone settings...Is this because I have an adaptor that isn't recognized or because the software of the Toshiba needs to be updated? Sorry if these are inappropriate questions here. I have not used a forum in many years.

Don,
I just bought the Toshiba SD-H400 along with a Linksys WUSB11 adapter. I had to request the software version update to 5.1.1b before the box would see the adapter. The software update took less than 24 hours.

So I bought the Pioneer Series 2 Unit only because I was told I could utilize it without a phone line and upon reading the setup instructions find this to be a complete lie. I've read the countless posts of entering ,#401 in the dial prefix during guided setup....it does NOT bypass the phone setting and the unit does not detect the D-Link USB adapter! Now my only option is to spend additional money to either get a wired USB adapter and have an unsightly ethernet cable going from one side of the room to other. Or calling Qwest to re-establish my land line that I worked tirelessly to get rid of and pay an additional $15 a month. Which BTW, they can't even do it for another week!!!
Furthermore, where in the process does the unit even detect the wireless USB adapter? After Guided Setup or before?!? This by far has got to be the most frustrating device I've ever had to configure/install/setup; and I engineer LAN/WANs for a living!!

Can someone help me out with the 810H by Pioneer? I am really more looking for a heads up, since it hasnt gotten here yet.
I was thinking of buying the WUSB12 USB adapter, will this work with the 810H, or do I need to buy something else?
How exactly do I start the setup process as far as the adapter is concerned?
The only reason I am asking ahead of time is because I have read the forums and see some people are having problems with the setup. I would just like the info from someone that has set up this specific device on a wireless network.
Thanks!

For those of you with 802.11g or 802.11a routers or accesspoints, There is a way to use them with tivo as far as I know. I don't have a tivo yet, but i still have a solution. You could use a usb to ethernet(wired) adapter connected to the tivo, with an ethernet cable running to a Wireless Bridge(game adapters should work as i think they are only a bridge with a funny name). The bridge would be set to communicate with the router, and the tivo would just assume it is talking via wired ethernet. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for the helpful words on trying to get my series 2 TiVo working with my wireless adapter but I have yet to get it to work.
I have a LinkSys WUSB v2.8 adapter and a TiVo DVR that starts with #240 so according to the website I have compatible hardware. My system info confirms that I have the home media option and my software version is 4.01-01 (it doesn't have an a or b). I have forced dial up logins several times so I presume I have the latest software version. Finally, I have 2x checked that the adapter actually does work with my laptop and it checks out fine.
My major stumbling block occurs on the screen where I should be able to change my phone and network settings. Where it does say "Phone and Network Setup" on top of the screen, I only have the option to "Edit phone settings". At the bottom of the list I have a starred option to find out about wireless networking but nowhere can I actually do anything about it.
I am very frustrated at this point as the TiVO phone center gives a message that circumstances beyond their control has forced them to close. Is there anything you can help me with?
Thanks for your time,
Glover

If you downloaded the latest software (about an hour long call), then your TiVo should say it is pending restart. When you reboot your TiVo, it will then install that downloaded software upgrade, and your wireless card should be usable. If you don't force your TiVo to reboot (the Restart option under System Reset), it will automatically reboot at ~2am. If your TiVo does not say it is pending restart, then let us know what your TiVo says about the status of the last call.

i have been trying for over a month to get wireless networking to work with my newly purchased toshiba sd-h400, and i'm hoping someone here can help me. basically, my sd-h400 works perfectly _until_ i plug a wireless network adapter into it. then it just reboots continuously.
first, i updated my software to 5.1.1b. then i plugged in a netgear ma11. the network would come up, and i could successfully run the test connection. however, it would run for only about 5 minutes before going into a rebooting loop, which could only be stopped by physically removing the wireless adapter.
next, i tried using a linksys wusb12 which, according to the tivo website, is supported by the toshiba with or without the software upgrade. i got the exact same results, with the system rebooting nonstop.
so then i tried the linksys wusb11, but the only one i found was v2.8. again, same results.
i am trying to decide if it is even worth trying to find a linksys wusb11 v2.6 to try with this. at this point, i will be paying restocking fees on 3 wireless adapters, and i'd rather not make that 4.
has anyone been able to get their sd-h400's to work with a non-wusb11 v2.6 adapter? or, if anyone has had this kind of problem, please let me know!
thanks.

I just hooked up a series 2Tivo. I also installed a Linksys Wireless-G broadband router (WRT54G) to my computer. I need detailed directions on how to connect the Tivo through the router. Is it possible to be truly "wireless" or is there still going to be a wire between the Tivo and router?

It turns out I was disconnecting the download before it was done without realizing it. TiVo would revert back to live TV at some point during the download and I thought the call was finished so I would disconnect the line. I forced another connection after reading your message and after TiVo went back to live TV I check the connection status and realized that it was still downloading. This time I was smart enough to let it finish. Sure enough about one hour later it was done. I got the pending restart message and after restarting everything has worked as advertised! :)

You cannot connect an 802.11b adapter to an 802.11g network. They aren't the same protocol. The router must support the protocol you are connecting with. The Linksys wrt54g router supports both 802.11b and 802.11g.
However, connecting an 802.11b adapter does not in any way impede 802.11g connections to the same router.
I have the Linksys wrt54g router. My TiVo uses the the Linksys wusb12 wireless USB adapter, which uses 802.11b protocol. My centrino laptop works with 802.11a, b, or g, and when I am home, it connects via 802.11g at 54Mb. My TiVo is obviously using the 802.11b protocol on the same network and both work just fine at the same time.

During setup I only had the option for 10 or 26bit key or entering a passphrase. Neither will working in my wireless network config. I have a 40 bit key but the field is locked at 26! Is anyone doing 64 or 128 WEP on their Tivo USB adapters?

I don't understand why support wasn't implemented for the Prism chipset, which would have automatically enabled a wide range of adapters. Netstumbler, Knoppix and PHLAK did so, albeit for different reasons, but it seems like one way to go that would get a lot of people up and running, without having to hunt around for a few specific models.
Is this likely to come any time soon?

So I've set up four Tivo boxes for friends and family, and now I get to do one for myself. a) WOOHOO! b) DOH! I never set up a phone line when I moved in here (how 1900s is that? sheesh). I've got a cable modem, but haven't set up a network yet. I've got a Linksys USB100M adapter that will allow me to plug an ethernet connection into USB, but will I need to get a router, etc. first? Am I able to unplug the connection from the computer, and run it through the adapter into the USB? I'm guessing not, but I'm quite a neophite at networking... I set up a wireless network at home, but so far I've not had to deal with the theory behind it. Any help/links? I've searched the site quite a bit, and will continue to do so. Many thanks in advance,

Others need you to inform them first whenever you switch. But you need to plug into the cable modem's Ethernet port, not the USB port, and you might need a crossover cable instead of a regular Ethernet cable. If you have further questions, you should start a new thread to ask them.

Many cable modems automatically "learn" the MAC address of the computer to which they're connected when the cable modem is powered up. When this is the case, connecting the cable modem the way you want it and then powering the cable modem off and then back on takes care of this. Just remember to power up the cable modem last.

I plugged the cable modem into the Tivo via the adapter, then rebooted the modem. #401 didn't work after rebooting Tivo as well (didn't expect it to. God doesn't like me that much). Anyway, I then plugged the ethernet cable back into the comp. and noticed that it didn't work until after I reset it. It had to learn the MAC address... I'll plug it into my laptop and see if it works with other devides, as well.
Many thanks,

I would copy a large file on your network with the 802.11b device (tivo) connected and time it. Then disconnect tivo, power cycle the router to reset it (some wrt54g firmware does not properly reset back to the higher 54mbps speed when the b device is disconnected unless it is reset). Then perform the same test copying the file across the wireless net. You'll find your speed is reduced to b-speed ~11mbps, despite what the driver tells you.
It's an unfortunate limitation of the 802.11g protocol that the speed is slowed when a b device connects.

I'm kinda of confused about the home networking with Tivo.
My situation right now is I have no phone service, just a cell phone, and a cable modem, plus Adelphia Cable.
What I would like to do is setup a Toshiba Series 2 DVD/Tivo Combo to use a linksys wireless adapter to get scheduling/updates.
Can I do this with the new Tivo update by just entering in some number like #400 or whatever is the dialing out settings?
Also is this a free feature as part of the Tivo update? Or do I have to buy the home media flag for $99 which I refuse to do, all I want is to update over my internet service.
I am planning on buying the Toshiba so I'm not locked into this, I'm just worried Tivo will want a bunch of extra money beyong the $299 plus $13/mo when I'd be saving them money using my broadband and not their phone lines.
I do currently have a older Sony 2000 series tivo collecting dust too, but from what I understand it'd cost about as much to 'hack' to get networking and more space than just buying a new tivo.
Any help is appreciated.. I miss my DVR!

You dont need to buy home networking to use your wireless network to connect to the Tivo service.
However, you do need to set up your Tivo using a phone line if you dont have the right adapter.

I just hooked up a TiVo yesterday and struggled through a problem that might be of interest to other newbies! While trying to connect the TiVo to my network today, I could not see "Edit Phone and Network Settings". I had noticed that after going through the 'Guided Setup', the software version was shown as 4.0.1 rather than 4.0.1b! After failing to find information, FAQ says that the TiVo should update after making a connection over the phone, I phoned Tech Support. I was advised that it takes several connections and several days to fully update to the latest version, unless the user forces the phone connections until the software version is updated on the 'System Information' page.

While technically all 802.11g equipment supports an interop mode with 802.11b clients and vice versa, the former causes the WAP to go into a compatibility mode which effectively reduces the throughput of all connections from the normal 22mbs max throughput (yes 22mbs kids) to a max throuhput of approx 11mbs. This can be avoided by adding a separate 802.11g WAP or wireless router (you can connect multiple routers together; you just need to create two separate subnets, e.g. 192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x), and setting the 802.11g WAP/router to only allow G clients to connect, ensuring that the full max 22mbs transfer rate is preserved.

Hello All. Just got a Tivo yesterday, the 40 hour series 2 model. Hooked it up easily, Sony tv, dvd, reciever and General Instruments cable box. Was a little mad that I had to use a phone line at first. Did the setup, no problem. The message said, 4 to 8 hours to process the info. I waited 4 hours then had the Tivo connect to the Tivo service. The Tivo downloaded for about 40 minutes then I restarted it. As soon as it restarted it found my Linksys wusb11, version 2.8, I configured it and WOOHOO, wireless conection. No problems for me so far. Less than 6 hours from the time I opened the box to the time all updates were done and I was using the Tivo with wireless. From what I read here, I am lucky.

OK, My frustration level is high
New Tivo Series 2.
Software version 4.0.1-01-2-240
WUSB11 - ver 2.8
Tivo is not recognizing the network adapter. Works with my laptop. I go to phone and network settings and I only see phone options.
What gives? What can I do to make this work?
SCG
As indicated by TiVoOpsMgr in the link in the very first post in this thread, you will need to use a phone to upgrade because the v2.8 WUSB11 wasn't supported until 4.0.1a. The current software, 4.0.1b, should get downloaded in the first phone call after completing initial guided setup. Then, force a reboot or wait for your TiVo to reboot itself, and your WUSB11 v2.8 should be recognized.

Hey man, I felt your pain cause I have the exact equipment you have, and encountered the exact same issue. It WILL work - but you have to leave it plugged into the phone jack for a few days until it gets the full on update it needs to provide you with the usb options. Then you'll have the option to connect with the d-link usb and update its firmware for tivo and unplug that darn phone cord! This all happenes after guided setup - you just have to wait til to see the magic message pop up on your tivo screen saying its ready for all that. But it should only take a few days of leaving your phone line plugged into it.
I hope this is a help to anyone else who experiences this, as I was running around in circles over this issue myself!

Thanks Everybody in this Forum!!!
I'm a very happy new owner of a 40hr S2, thanks to this forum I was able to configure my Tivo on my wireless network w/o sweat, not having a land line at home, I took my Tivo to a friends house, it took about 4 hrs to download all the updates and detected my wireless NIC, after that only had to take it home and plug it to the TV and power, when I relized that I forgot the power cord and had to drive back to my friends house, that was the only bad experience.
I decided to buy the Tivo finally when I found that Circuit City has it for $180 - $50 mail-in rebate = $138 w/tax
A quick tip here, after Tivo downloads the programing guide, it shows that the indexing process can take from 4 to 8 hrs, mine took about 90 min. I found that you can see the progress of the indexing process, you can find that on the option where you force the call to Tivo services (don't remember the name, anyone can correct me if I'm wrong) I only play with it for a couple of hours last night ;-)
I have a W-base MS MN-500, using 128 bit WEP and MAC filtering, no problems there.
Thanks Again!

Good Afternoon,
Just finally bought a Series 2.. had an upgraded Sony Series1 for ages. Got the 4.0.1b update, it recognizes my LinkSys version 2.6 usb card fine, the Test Connection works, connects, updates clock, then disconnects. But when I try to do a daily call, it hangs at the Configuring...... prompt for about 2 minutes then fails.
I have a Netgear WRT624 B/G wap running in mixed mode, Tivo is on DHCP and receives an IP just fine, DHCP server sees Tivo come in and gives it an IP so I think I'm ok that way, else I figure the test connect would fail as well.
I've tried giving it a static IP with all the related info for my network, I've tried soft boot, cold boot, unplug/replug the NIC. I'm getting 90% signal (excellent) so I don't think that's the issue.
I read on the forum on the tivo.com page where at least one other is having the exact same hang at Configuring... but no one has answered him there.
Any clue ?
Thanks.

I have a Toshiba SD-h400 and I need to update the software on my tivo before I could get it to work. I am a network admin by trade so I was hoping my knowlegde of computer would help me. It did. But I needed to have my Tivo at 5.1.1b to detect my Netgear MA111...which someone mentioned in this thread that it is a g/b USB adapter...It is only a 802.11b. I have my card setup with WEP (128-bit) and my access point is mac address filter (cant have enough security) as well as the SSID is no broadcasting..hey it comes with the trade. It works excellect and the MA111 is small and comes with a 18" usb extension cord...oh and best buy has it for 49 before a 20 dollar rebate so its a good deal!! Just remember the toshiba must be updated to 5.1.1b the 5.1.01 doesnt see any USB adapter...at least mine didnt! Good luck. I like the MA111 it seems to work well and if you use WEP make sure your key in the router is HEX as well as HEX in the Tivo. The Alpha keys dont work with the MA111...at least I couldnt get it to work so stick with the HEX key for WEP!! Good luck
At this point, basically all the wireless manufacturers use different methods for converting alpha keys to hex for WEP. Consequently, alpha WEP keys generally are useful only when dealing with other equipment from the same manufacturer.

Well I got my TurboNet/CacheCard in my series 1, got it on the wired network, and it too won't connect. The test call works, just like the Series2, but a real call gets part way thru, then hangs, then eventually comes back failed.
Being hardwired that eliminates my wifi network, so it must be my Netgear FVS318. I've even tried setting the DMZ port to the IP of the Tivo, still got same thing, so now I'm really stumped unless the dmz setting somehow just didn't take.
I tried the web sites to see if I'm behind a caching server, I am not.
My only other hardware is my Alcatel 1000 DSL modem, straight to bellsouth.
Does anyone know of MTU comes into play here ? As a kludge with the Alcatel 1000's, there is a malformed packet issue with them, that is corrected if you put a dumb plain ole 10mb hub inbetween the Alcatel and the FVS318, it fixes the problem. I was told it was either a packet header issue, or an MTU issue.
But why would the test call connect, configure, set clock, and hang up cleanly, then the daily call would not. ?? :(
So all this effort is worthless to me for daily calls.
Sure I love ripping the 190hours of video off my Series1 tho :)
And HomeNetworking option is a waste, everytime it tries to get a directory from my mp3 server (win2000 Server), it tries for a while, then bombs and never finds the server again on the list of Tivo Servers.
What a great use of money.

The reason MTU can affect real calls and not test calls is because big chunks of data are downloaded in the real calls.

Warning up Front: I'm a wireless novice!
I just got a Series 2 TIVO DVR and I was hoping to hook it up through my current wireless network. Not sure that this is possible with my current equipment. I have a D-Link 802.11g Wireless Router (model DI-524) which does not have any USB ports, only LAN "ports". Is it possible to get a USB adapter and so "convert" a LAN port on the router so I can use it with my DVR?
Since I don't have a phone line close to the DVR, and if the USB adapter idea doesn't work for my wireless router, my next option is a wireless modem jack. Does any know how far away you can have the base unit (unit you plug the phone line into) from the extension unit (unit that plugs into the AC outlet and into which you plug the DVR)? The phone outlet I'd need to use is in another room..
Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions!

First -- if you want to connect your TiVo DVR to a network, you'll need to get the appropriate adapter. The officially supported adapters can be found at www.tivo.com/adapters
The adapter goes into the USB port on the TiVo -- you would not connect the USB port of your TiVo to anything other than one of these adapters
Second -- To use some of the newer adapters, you might need a software update. If your TiVo is brand new, the initial guided setup is really only done with a phone line (although TiVo does give you a 50 foot phone cord). Any software update will come down on the phone call that is made after guided setup is complete.

Well, I must say, that getting a wireless adapter to work properly on a Tivo has not been a very fun experience...first I bought a Linksys WUSB11 that wasn't a V2.6 or V2.8. I returned it and bought an SMC 2662W that apparently isn't a v.2 since my Tivo doesn't recognize it. I have 4.01b on my Series2 so I don't think that's the problem.
I'm just curious if there are any plans to allow customers to go out and force a software upgrade and allow them to select the adapter they have (just like you can do with a PC right now?) It's much too difficult to try to find the right version of an adapter that is supposed to work in this Tivo, especially if you try to buy things off the Internet.
Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Can anyone tell me if there is an adapter for the Hughes dual Direct TV box so that I can do my daily calls via a Cell Phone? I have had it set up for about a year via phone line, but if there is a way to use my cell phone that would be great.
Thanks!!
I'll have to agree with frobey, connecting through wireless is surprisingly frustrating.
I purchased a 40hr Series 2 last weekend ($50 rebate, whoohoo!). It's been amazingly easy to set up, except for when I tried to connect to my wireless network. I bought a D-Link DWL-122, and have an Apple Airport (regular ol' Airport, not Airport Extreme) conencted to SBC DSL through a Speedstream modem. When I go through the wireless setup, the tivo sees the network, but is never able to connect to it (it gives me something like "couldn't locate network" after trying to set it up). The status screen shows the network name, but says there is no signal (the adapter is about 2 inches from the base station, so I don't think signal strength is the real problem). The IP address area is also blank.
After searching through the forums here I thought it might be the Hex/Password problem. I found the hex version of the password in the Airport setup utility, but no go. I tried disabling WEP but got the same problem. The odd thing is, I was able to connect to a neighbor's unprotected network and everything worked fine, which makes me suspect it's either the Airport or the DSL. I don't have any special setup on the Airport, just the normal password protection. Is there some trick to getting it to connect to an Airport? Was the DWL-122 just a bad choice? Any other suggestions?
thanks!

Check to see if you have any entries in the Access List on your ABS. If you do, you'll need to add the MAC address for the adapter connected to the TiVo.
Note that I use a "regular ol' Airport" base station as well. FWIW -- it has a lot better range than the NetGear wireless router that I have in the same room.
Hmm, no, the Access Control list is empty.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

When was the last time you re-booted your ABS? If it's been a while, you might want to give it a shot. Also make sure that it's set to dole out enough IP addresses for your network (via DHCP). Another approach you might want to take is to use a static IP address for the TiVo -- which should be outside the DHCP range on the ABS
I rebooted the base station a bunch of times while trying different settings. That's actually the one problem I've had with my Airport. Every couple of weeks it just kind of gets stuck and I have to restart the base station and the DSL modem to get it to work again. Otherwise it's been great.
I had the base station set to "Share a single IP address (using DHCP and NAT)." Is that wrong? When I try to change it to "Share a range of IP addresses (using only DHCP)" and try to upload it gives me a sheet saying "Sharing a range of DHCP addresses requires the base station to be configured using Ethernet and static IP addresses."
Does that mean I have to use an ethernet cable to upload the changes?

My ABS is connected to a LinkSys 4-port cable/dsl router which is what connects to my ISP. That LinkSys router's IP address is 10.0.1.254. The IP address of my ABS is 10.0.1.1
In "Show all settings"...
Internet Tab --
Connect using: Ethernet
Configure TCP/IP using Ethernet section
Configure: Manually
IP address: 10.0.1.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Router address: 10.0.1.254
DNS servers: (two IP address for the DNS at my ISP)
Network Tab --
Distribute IP addresses is checked
Share a range of IP addresses (using only DHCP)
Beginning: 10.0.1.2
Ending: 10.0.1.50
DHCP lease: 365 days
Enable DHCP server on Ethernet is unchecked
Ah, "configured using ethernet" must have meant the I had to choose "Connect using: Ethernet" under the internet tab. Once I did that it didn't give me that warning sheet. Unfortunately after I made that change I couldn't connect to the internet.
Oh well. I'll try again tonight to make sure I did everything right (I hadn't yet had my coffee when I tried it this morning).
I really appreciate your help though, Bob.

One big difference we might have from one another is that my ABS doesn't connect to my ISP directly. It only connects to the LinkSys 4-port Cable/DSL router. It is the LinkSys that actually handles the connection to the Internet.
Yeah, my base station is just connected to the cheap modem they gave me when I signed up.

Do you know if it uses PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet) or just a regular Ethernet connection? Depending on which it is determines how you need to have the setting under the Internet tab configured.
With PPPoE you'll need to provide your account name and password as well as put in the values for the DNS servers and Domain name (these come from your ISP).
With just Ethernet, you should have it set to configure itself using DHCP. Again you should put in the DNS servers and Domain name that come from your ISP
It's very important that you have the Enable DHCP server on Ethernet unchecked in the Network tab. The ABS you have only has a single Ethernet port and you could end up pushing DHCP services back to your ISP -- and they won't be happy with you. They should be blocking this so it doesn't happen, but they may not be doing so.
(They still talk about me at my ISP and how my little old ABS took down a major client of theirs about two years ago -- part of the reason why I have a LinkSys 4-port Cable/DSL router on my network now)
BTW -- back to your original post, do you have a space in your wireless network's name? Is it an open or closed network? The wireless network name is case-sensitive (which you need to key in if your network is "closed") and spaces cause trouble with some devices.
Do you know if it uses PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet) or just a regular Ethernet connection?
I don't really know. All of the setup things I've found on SBC's support site say to use PPPoE.
I think I may have let it configure automatically when I tried changing the "connect using" option to ethernet this morning. I'll go back through and try it manually.
They still talk about me at my ISP and how my little old ABS took down a major client of theirs about two years ago -- part of the reason why I have a LinkSys 4-port Cable/DSL router on my network now)
Sweet. Show them who's boss.
I tried turning on "Enable DHCP server on Ethernet" just to see if it changed anything, but it didn't, so I turned it back off.
do you have a space in your wireless network's name? Is it an open or closed network?
It's an open network, and it shows up in the Tivo's network list, but it does have spaces in the name (My network's name is "radio waves go right through you"). I'll try changing it to one word.

Huzzah! Eurkea! Whoo Hoo!
Yeah, yeah, I just renamed it "inductioncoil" and it works! I knew it was going to be something absurdly simple.

Just wanted to let people with early Series 2 Tivos (specifically the infamous 60 hour) know that I plugged in a Dell TrueMobile 1700 USB Wireless B addapter and it picked it right up. The Tivo pages list that as working with the newer (Service tag starting with 2) models, but it seems to work just fine with the early ones too.
On the bonus side of the addapters, they're good looking and cheap on Ebay.

More on the TrueMobile: I finally got my second Tivo going, and the TrueMobile adapter is working great. Medium quality shows (what we record about everything in) come through at roughly 1.5x speed. From about 35 feet, with 3 walls and a refrigerator in the way, we get "good" %57 signal. The other Tivo is hard wired with a Linksys USB100M adapter.

Hi. I recently purchased a TiVo series2 80 hour. I have no idea whether it is 4.0 or if that matters.
I am trying to hook it up through my internet. I have no land line. Is there anyway to do the initial guided setup throught the internet, or do I have to do this at someone else's home?
I am very frustrated and I really want my TiVO to work, but I have just about had enough of it. I have tried the ,#401 and I have switched the cords, reset the internet, nothing seems to work. I have a Liknsys Wireless G router and A Linksys USB100M (?) adaptor.
I am not very tech savvy so any suggestion would be appreciated if described in baby steps. I am capable but need some detailed explanantion about how to go about doing things.
PLEASE HELP!

For initial guided setup, you must have the router set to be a DHCP server (but the manual probably won't use that phrase and will call it something else), which is likely the default behavior. Furthermore, you must be sure the primary DNS server broadcast from your DHCP server (which in turn is likely fetched from your ISP) is working.

Make sure you're not setting this up as a "peer to peer" networking option on the TiVo -- that's only used for connecting two TiVo units together without a network that's already in place.
Also really long SSID values will cause trouble sometimes.
Do you have any wireless security enabled such as WEP? What are you using as your wireless access point or router?

Do you have the new silver Tivo? (Model TCD5400***) I ask because I can't force my Tivo to use broadband for guided setup on my new one either.
I'm planning on taking mine to a friends house who has a landline if I can't get it to work.

Help, please
I have a new (refurb) 40 hr black TiVo that has gone through the initial setup and has software 4.01b installed. It is on my wireless network via a Linksys WUSB11 (v2.8).
My router sees it, recognizes that it has the correct SSID name (3 chars), and no WEP encryption. The DHCP server has issued it a valid IP address. The TiVo shows a signal strength of 70% (excellent) and shows the IP address that the DHCP server has issued it. The TiVo is set to use the network for it's communications.
Yet, I can not complete a call with it. When I try the system cleans up, attempts to "dial", and then tells me "(Failed. Unknown Error.)"
Additionally, it can not see any PC on the network with the TiVo Desktop installed and those PCs can not see the TiVO on the network as a valid access point.
It all works if I hardwire the TiVO into the router with a Linksys USB200M, but that's not optimal as the router and the TV are on seperate floors. I am at a complete loss as to why everything looks good for a wireless connection, yet an error is generated and it fails. Any help would be appreciated.

You people had me all scared! It ended up being a breeze getting set up on wireless, though it took more time just waiting on downloads than I anticipated. I'm really glad I researched this prior to buying, though, to ensure that I had the right wireless access... thingie. The most complicated piece of information I had to supply was the password typed on the bottom of my SBC 2Wire wireless... other thingie.
Hope the rest of my experience is as smooth.

I have a Tivo Series 2 240 model DVR, my question is everytime I go down to Settings/ Phone/Network settings I see the edit phone option but not the edit network settings. I have a D-Link DWL-120 not plus but I noticed the model is V.F1, when I plug it in I don't get any option to update the firemware or even that it is installed. I don't have a phoneline near my Tivo so I had to disconnect it and move it to a different room so that I could connect. Now my question is Now that it has connected and downloaded what ever it is that it downloaded, how long will I have to wait to see if it fixed anything, or more importantly is this model Wireless adapter compatible?

Loco_ped,
A Series 2 is definately wireless compatible. The 240 series can actually use more adapters (notably the Linksys WUSB 12) than other series 2.
Check your TiVO software version # in the settings menu. If it still shows 4.01 you might need to power down your TiVO and reboot it. Any new software update that is downloaded will not become available until after the TiVO reboots.

I fixed my "(Failure. Unknown Error.)" problem. I have a D-Link AirPlus router that does some funky 22Mb mode with compatible D-Link wireless cards. It is *supposed* to allow regular 11Mb connections for other devices. That doesn't seem to work properly, though. Once I set the router to only work in 11Mb mode the TiVO was able to dial out.
Now to try the HMO PC software.

I decided to go ahead and buy the Linksys adapter since it seems to be the recomended one, the only issue I have is that now I have a D-link adapter I don't need and I can't return because I bought it off Newegg. Oh well Maybe I'll use it when I buy my next tivo. Thanks for your help though. I'll see if the software changes anytime soon.
I have a USB200M on my TiVo 2.
Can I connect this to a 801g ethernet to wireless bridge (DWL-G810) and operate 801g. It doesn't seem like the TiVo needs to know anything about the bridge since only the USB200M is connected via USB. The bridge seems to work fine with eveything else I've connected. Thanks, Steve

I bought a NetGear MA111 (v1) adaptor and a WGR614 router mid-June. Hooked 'em up, and TiVo worked perfectly right off the bat.
HOWEVER, for the past two weeks, the MA111 powers down (green light goes off, it gets cold) within 1-6 hours. TiVo shows no connected adaptor.
I unplug and replug it, and all is well - for a few hours.
I have tried both USB slots, tried an extension cable (to get it away from the unit), and as a last resort called NetGear. Their tech support ran through some tests, and indeed, when the MA111 is plugged into my COMPUTER (though still using my wired connection normally), the thing stays powered up perfectly. Move it back to the TiVo, and it's off in a few hours.
NetGear of course says it's a TiVo problem; TiVo support (2 levels) today says it must be a NetGear problem.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

I just bought and setup my Toshiba Tivo unit. Looking at the system info it looks like I have system 5.1.1. I did run at least one phone line update.
My Toshiba does not recognize my Linksys WUSB11. The Linksys is version 2.8.
Any ideas on how to get the Tivo to recognize the WUSB11?

I'm in a similar predicament to Loco Ped. I'm switching to wireless networking because my unit's modem has failed and an external modem hasn't been able to work either. Basically, I have to try to do this without having to make a phone call.
The unit is an AT&T 40 hour running 4.0.1b. I have connected a Linksys WUSB11 (v2.8) to the unit (the network router is a Linksys W54G).
My problem: The Settings page menu gives an option for "Phone & Network Settings" but when selected, it brings me to a page that only offers phone settings, with no selections for changing connection or editing network settings. It does have a yellow star option that takes you to directions on how to connect to a network which, essentially, directs me back to the pages and options that I don't have access to. Suggestions? Any suggestion that requires making a phone call is off the table.
Unit is working fine otherwise (a lot of manual recordings), but I don't want to be left with a dumb DVR.

Thanks. I did all that without success. Then, I connected the adapter to my PC running XP and was informed the adapter malfunctioned. Got another adapter, checked that one on the PC, and it was recognized. Hooked it up to the Tivo and everything worked first time through.
It has been working pretty much perfectly for two days, even sharing photos. The last thing I expected the cause would be a hardware problem right out of the box. Reading these threads, it seems Linksys might have a little QC problem with these adapters?

i have a series 2 tivo 240 -- 80 hour and a d-link dwl-122 and am unable to connect to tivo also using my wireless network. i have tried dropping my wep key and renaming my network. i am using a ppoa and have it set to find an ip address automatically. tivo shows my wireless network and is connected at 76% and also shows an ip address. however, when i try to connect i get the message gateway not found or failed while negotiating. i am not sure what other ways to make it work. if anyone has any ideas that would be greatly appreciated!
thanks.

Hi, just want to post my configuration which finally works:
I have a Toshiba SD-H400, and Netgear MR814v2 wireless router. Therefore naturally I got the Netgear MA111 USB adapter in the first place, thinking it would go happily with the router. Unfortunately, although the USB adapter was recognized immediately since I plugged in, the signal died a couple of minutes later. Tried numerous times and it was always so. Forced TiVo connected back to center to get the latest 5.1.1.b, also updated the Netgear router firmware, but MA111 still died on me every couple of minutes (and never woke up).
Finally I went back to store today to exchange a Linksys WUSB11 v2.8. It was a breeze to install. I was able to listen to my MP3 and view my photos in 1 minute.
Note: The Netgear MA111 I got was v.1. I have no idea if v.2 would work or not. You can know which version it is from the box. Small print somewhere on the box.
Hi all-
Last night I was able to set up my TiVo to a new wireless network using a Netgear b wireless router and the MA111 (little compact USB adapter).
It works like a charm, photos and music transfer and play fine, and I'm able to connect to the TiVo service without problems.
One small question - I have a 2.4 GHZ (new) Panasonic phone, and so far, so good. I've got the phone and router in very close proximity, and my signal doesn't drop past 55%, (it usually hovers at 85% when my router is more than a foot away), and even when I'm on the phone, the music keeps playing normally.
So... does this mean I don't have the dreaded "interference problem?" In other words, assuming music plays well and signal strength doesn't drop too far when I'm on a call (even if the router and phone are within one foot of each other), should I be OK?
I know, if what I'm using NOW works, I AM OK... but I always think ahead, and I may get a laptop one day, or decide to stream video from the TiVo with TiVo to Go.
Thanks!

After reading your post I checked the software version and it was only 5.1.01. Re-connected phone line, downloaded the latest software (5.1.1b) and voila! (pardon my French) Everything is fine.
Remember Toshiba SDH400/MA111 users, make sure your software is 5.1.1b!
Thanks so much,

PS Now if I could only pick your brain on another wireless network issue...:-)
Lisa, just curious, what's the brand of your wireless router (name and version, including hardware and firmware). I had the same equipments as yours -- except the router (which I don't know) and the MA111 didn't work, but Linksys works.
Thanks.

If you want your post to be more helpful to others, you should indicate the
brand, hardware version, firmware version of
your TiVo, wireless router, and USB adapter ...
Thanks... actually, everything works perfectly unless the router is literally within 1 foot of the cordless phone, while I'm on it... then, music will stop streaming. Of course, since it's recommended to keep the router AWAY from the phone base station, this should normally be a problem!
I have a Netgear 814 router with MA 111 wireless adapter, and a Panasonic 2.4 GHz phone (new model).
I'm thrilled with the wireless connection to my TiVo... wish I had done this ages ago!
Thanks!

Thanks ... but still ...
Netgear 814 has TWO versions, v1 and v2. For v2 (don't know about v1), there are several different firmware versions as well ...
For MA111, there are two versions as well ... look at the box for some very small prints. If it's v2, it will tell you somewhere.
For TiVo series 2, there are also a handful different variants ... TiVo 2 standalone, Toshiba ... also the version of the systemware ... ;)
From the posts across the forums, I've seen some people reported success, some others not. I suspect it's due to these minor details.
OK...
Tivo 540040
Netgear MR814v2
Netgear MA11 (does not say v2)
Thanks!

Thanks. It would be even perfect if you can post the firmware version of your router. :D
Maybe someone could complie a list of "Would Do" and "Wouldn't Do" of all the combinations?
For my combination:
---------------------------------------------------------------
TiVo: Toshiba SD-H400, latest systemware: 5.1.1b
Router: Netgear MR814v2, firmware 5.3 (latest)
USB: Linksys WUSB11 v.2.8
Used Netgear USB MA111 v1 at the beginning, but failed.

Tried a Hawking HWU300 w/ a refurb series 2 (4.01b), no luck. I thought since my wired Hawking worked fine, and the HWU250 had been reported as working, that I'd be fine, but no luck. The tivo doesn't see the wireless adapater. Plugged in the wired Hawking, and it found it right away.
Oh, well. Back to the store.

I'd like to say I'm a bit peeved that I have to upgrade my SDH400 twice to get it wireless. Over the phone it takes frickin' forever. And who knows, the the MAG111 might have worked at that point since it's B&G compatible. Instead I just assumed it wasn't compatible and went with the MA111. Difference of $10 to $20 after rebate at CompUSA, but I'd rather have the better one if it would be beneficial in the long run.

gotta get to that point though. I'm still trying to get the SDH400 to recognize the adapter first. Then when I get it all going I'll worry about that. I'm not technically declined so I was just trying to post my frustration. Seriously, Toshiba should have an insert or something about the whole wireless thing. Don't know why the initial TV firmware upgrade couldn't be to the .b version. And nowhere in the initial setup did it ask if you were going to network your setup at all.
I think the setup should initially ask how you're setting it up if it determines what firmware version is installed. I think that's my point. Then I'm all for giving my tivo/adapter/wireless setup and if it works or not. baby steps......haha.

Hi, as you can see from my previous post, I couldn't get MA111 to stay connected for more than a couple of minutes. I tried two wireless adapters and Toshi could recognize them in seconds. You might want to try other adapters to see if your Toshi can recognize them ... From the threads in this forum, it seems most adapters can be recognized ... Please post back your result. Post your symptoms, maybe some other members can help.
Have you tried to force Toshi to connect back to the central server to upgrade?
Also, in my case, Toshi detected the wireless card as soon as I plugged it in.
Still, what's the brand of your router?

In regard to trying to get the MAG111 to work, it would not have worked. Currently, no 802.11g adapters are supported at all. The list of adapters that work can be found at www.tivo.com/adapters

gotchya. figured if it works on b and g that it would work. guess that's not the case. I guess you're the one to complain to......why did I have to update the firmware twice to get the networking going? why didn't it upgrade to the .b firmware the first time around, especially if that's the latest version. It takes forever to download so I'm spending way too much of my Saturday getting this going. If it's not going to automatically download the .b version of the software initially, then it should at least ask you how you plan to set it up so it can determine which version to give you. Just a royal PITA. I'd feel better at this point if my service was updated. I paid by credit card last night, and the transaction still isn't complete so I still can't set it and forget yet. Never had this problem with Bank of America (not completing the transaction) so I don't know where the problem truly lies. But I'm connected:
Wireless Router is a D-Link DI-624 Version C, Firmware v2.42 (the newest one is in beta)
Adapter: Netgear MA111
And of course the Toshiba SDH400(for only a $100 after rebates)
got rid of my g/f's cheap Sungale DVD player and aging non-hifi vcr. And I can stream music from my pc so I don't have to have my Rio Karma or Carbon connected all the time. Can only imagine the streaming getting better with an upgrade to G.

I have a new silver 540. It's connected to our 802.11b network and I can play music and view pictures from my PC. Every time I try to use the network to connect to Tivo for program data it says it Failed for Unknown Reason. I remembered to change the connection type from phone to network before trying to connect so that wasn't the problem. It works fine via phone for now. Anybody with a hint or suggestion?
I have:
Netgear MR814 v2
Netgear MA111
Bellsouth DSL with a Westell modem
I'm using 128-bit WEP and not broadcasting the SSID and, as I said above, I am able to view content from my PC with no problems.

Are you using a static IP address? Does a test connection succeed but a regular connection fails? If both of these are "yes", you might want to check the DNS setting in the static IP setup on the TiVo.
bogelas
09-27-2004, 04:15 AM
Both connection types (test and real) fail.
I am not using a DNS address on my PC so I didn't put any into the Tivo either. I assigned an IP address manually and it is within the range of addresses available from the router. My router is 192.168.0.1, my PC is 192.168.0.3, and my Tivo is 192.168.0.9.

If you use a static IP address on the TiVo, it probably will not work unless you put in an entry for the IP address of the DNS. Some folks put in the IP address of their router and others, including me, put in the DNS address provided by their Internet Service Provider.

I don't know about all of you, but I filter off of MAC adr's for my router. So once my tivo recognized the mac adr, I just plugged it into my router settings and off I went. Not sure if it's six to one, half a dozen to another, but it works well, until I change out a card on my laptop and forget I have to update my settings on a different computer.

Does anyone know a trick on how to get the machine to see the adapter after it has not be able to find it.
I can connect to the service if I am lucky and then right after that the machine says i do not have an adapter connected.
then if I pull it out and plug it back up the machine will either reboot/freeze right away or midway through another download.

I just got a refurb SD-H400 and bought the tiny Belkin F5D6051 ($10 after rebate by mail at CompUSA) to try and use my home's wireless network. Plugged it in, got power to the adapter but the menu never showed me the config. option for a network. Thanks to this thread, I've realized that I have to force a software update, which I will do tonight. If, after that, I can get the setup to work, I'll post the results here (actually, I'll do it either way!). If anyone has worked magic with this combo (particularly the Belkin adapter), let me know. Does anybody know what data transfer rate is required to get standard TV quality pictures? I thought connecting two tivos together would need more than 802.11b can handle.
rkcarter
11-01-2004, 02:45 PM
Well, my understanding is you can't watch it while it's transferring, and it likely takes a lot longer than 1/2 hour to transfer a 1/2 hour show between two TiVos using 802.11b.

Am I the only one who tries to connect to the tivo service and can make a full connection but the machine will reboot or freeze while loading data?
I have a Toshiba SD-H400:
At first I tried a NETGEAR MA111. It would work only if God helped out. It can connect and maybe, just maybe complete the load. However, after that it doesn't see the adapter. So you plug it back in and BAM! Reboots.
So I unplug the unit, wait a little while, plug it back up. Wait for the machine to get to the dancing tivo guy screen and I plug the adapter in and the whole issue starts again. Reboots or Freezes either right away, during the dowload, or during the load.
So I went out and bought a DWL-122. Same stuff, different day.
This deal was supposed to get me the tivo for 100 after rebate but I have had to buy two adapters and it still doesn't work.
Does anyone know they correct moment to insert the usb adapter?
That would help out alot!
Thanks!

Thanks! It sounds like the data coming in is corrupted or mal-formed in some way which is then crashing the process. Since you get the same thing with two different adapters, it's either a fault with the SD-H400 itself or the nature of your network connection. What sort of signal strength do you see? Is there anything around that could be corrupting the signal (wireless 2.4GHz phones, other wireless networks, etc.)? Do you use wireless connections for a computer and if so, does it work well?

Thanks for the speedy reply!
I live in an apt complex. So the corruption possibilites could be endless as far as phones and microwaves.
I am getting 60% + signal strength(That is what is says on the Tivo Screen).
There are other wireless networks around. One that is showing up one the tivo that is not mine.
My Wireless network is great for my laptop. However, when trying to connect to TiVo I do not use my wireless network to connect the laptop. I have the laptop turned off while i do it.
I am guessing it may be due to the other wireless networks around???? So I guess I should encrypt it?
If you think that will help please give me the quickest way to encrypt. Maybe by blocking other mac addys from my router. On second thought that will only protect my router from other users connecting to my netowork.
I think I need a way to force my tivo to only connect to my router. I am pretty sure it is connecting to my router because i have it set to use my ssid. But I am hoping encryption will make the tivo and my router connect only to themselves????
Please Help! I am losing it

Radio wave interference is interference and turning on encryption isn't going to block other networks from causing interference. You're better off searching for a different channel (by the way, the wireless channels overlap slightly with one another -- I suggest you try the extremes of 1 and 11 first)
You should be using a "closed" SSID, WEP, and MAC filtering -- if you can. But this is more for security reasons.

The adapter should be in all the time. It's not a matter of knowing when to attach it or not. It shouldn't interfere with the startup process or anything.
I just had a thought though --- are you using any sort of USB extension cable on your adapter? If you are, you might want to check to make sure it's clear of any electrical wires. Also, you don't want to extend the cable any more than the cable that came with your adapter.
If you're having problems on the actual loading of the data, I suppose it could be something is wrong with the hard drive or the data on the hard drive.

Just tried to hook up my Toshiba with a Linksys WUSB11 and it does absolutely nothing! After searching this forum I found all the references to version numbers and discovered the network adapter I have is version 4! Since I can't search through store inventory to find an older version, how long will it be before a software upgrade will let me use a version 4 network adapter?

Hopefully this will help a few people who were suffering the same wireless connection symptoms as me.
I have a new series 2 (540 service to be exact), a DWL-122 wireless adapter, and a Buffalo G54 AirStation w/ Repeater).
After complete phone line set up and an additional follow-up phone line connect I was still getting a "no DHCP client" error when I tried to connect via wireless with get TCP/IP automatically, etc.
If I tried manually entering an IP adddress, subnet mask, etc. I got the error "Gateway (router) Not Found".
1 iBook and 2 wireless PC with a mix of AppleAirport, D-Link, and Buffalo adapters have no problem connecting to the router or repeater.
Turns out that the Tivo (or possibly the DWL-122) were having trouble with the ASCII 64bit encryption.
I switched to hexidecimal, set the TiVo wireless settings to hexidecimal and autodetect for the TCP/IP and it immediately found a connection. Ran a connection test with immediate success, and verified it by connecting to TiVo service to perform a connection and update.
In short, make sure you use hexidecimal encryption.
Good Luck.

I searched up and down for solutions to this issue, and I saw that other people had the same problems, and lots of them were solved, but no solutions seem to have been posted... so:
Last night, we bought a new D-Link DI-624 (802.11g) wireless router, and I can't seem to get my Tivos to receive a signal from it, even if I put the access point directly on top of the router (I'm using Linksys WUSB11 wireless access points on both of my Tivos). Everything used to work fine with our old Linksys 802.11b router, until I dropped it. :(
When I go through Tivo's network settings config, it sees my network's SSID, and I've tried all combos of WEP keys (disabled/hex/ascii), but still Tivo doesn't get an IP address, nor does it see any signal broadcast (under signal strength, it's just blank, no % or anything). With the Linksys in place, I'd still see a signal strength, even if I didn't have the right password, I just wouldn't be able to access it until I entered the password. But now, I'm seeing nothing.
There's a post in the Tivo Help Center that says:

TIVO 2 wireless network- creating a connection/ iTunes
DLink di624 router, DWL-122 wireless usb adapter
i just wanted to do a quick post of thanks with respect to the wireless help thread-
i was getting pretty consistent DHCP errors and no IP address- and DLink was of little help-
after many reconfigs of both the router and the network settings of the TIVO, it turned out to be
the wep encryption password was hexidecimal as opposed to alpha numeric- which confused me as there are no case options- not to mention it adds a character at the beginning of the string- but it worked flawlessly and all the encryption (64b) and dynamic addressing is the same as it was before the tivo arrived-
Anyone know what this refers to? Is there really an "extra character at the beginning of the string" that I should know about? Anyone else have any idea what I should try next before I return the DI-624 and buy another Linksys (same as I had before)?
TIA!
Edited to add - I've ensured that the router is NOT set to 802.11g only mode. And Transfer Speed is set to 'auto'.

Why is it so difficult to get the USB adapter working? I've made two rather long trips back and forth to Fry's Electronics for 2 different pairs of adaptors for my TiVos and I still can't get a suitable adaptor.
Can someone explain why TiVo can't or won't update the software to work with adaptors that are readily available? It seems like it's damn hard to find wireless B adaptors -- but there are tons and tons of USB G adaptors out there (which should be backwards compatible).
I tried a pair of Microsoft USB-B adaptors (didn't work!) before I read the TiVo approved list. Then tried a Linksys WUSB11 adaptor - but didn't figure out that I had V4 until I opened the box (the version number is actually printed on the outside of the box - it's kinda like a Find Waldo exercise to figure it out though). They didn't work either.
Is there anything in the works that would make these WUSB11 v4 adaptors work (like in the next few weeks or so) or am I going to have to make a 3rd trip to Fry's to take them back and give up (they didn't have any of the other "approved" adaptors in stock.)?
I already wrote an unhappy letter to TiVo corporate about this percieved lack of support. Is there any reason out there for optimism?

I have two TiVo's on my home network.
The first is a Sony SV2000R, with a Turbonet card.
The second is a Sony SV3000R Series II which I originally had wired to the network.
A few months ago I got a WUSB11 adapter and a Linksys WRTG54 wireless router. I just got the wireless set up a few months ago and things have been working pretty well.
I used to have the computer equiptment and the Series II TiVo in the same room. When I would look at the Phone & Network Setup screen on the TiVo, I would get a signal of close to 100%.
I recently moved the computer equiptment to an upstairs room. Now, I usually see a signal of between 45-55%. If I watch this screen for a while it alternates between showing an IP address and saying 'supplied by server'.
I noticed this morning that both TiVo's failed to update last night. I rebooted the Wireless Router and was able to update the Series I. After many attempts, I was finally able to update the Series II.
Could this be happening because of the weaker signal or could I have messed something else up?

It shouldn't drop out just because of the weaker signal. However, you might be getting either some interference from something like a 2.4GHz phone -- or you might be picking up someone else's wireless network.
Is the wireless network name (SSID) of your router set to "linksys"? If it is, there might be another "linksys" network near you that is causing confusion on the wireless connection. ("linksys" is the default SSID value used by Linksys wireless routers -- just like Negear uses "NETGEAR" and D-Link uses "default")

I have the exact same problem as Ron90069 (Post #95).
I plugged in the Netgear MA111, supposedly compatible, with my Tivo2 series (540???) and it worked immediately. It was recognized by the Tivo, received a good signal, called in fine.
This didn't last, however. After somewhere between 10 minutes and (the record) 90 minutes, the MA111 is no longer recognized as being attached to the Tivo. Sometimes the green power light goes off, sometimes it remains on, but in either case, Tivo doesn't think anything is attached.
If I unplug it and plug it back in, everything is fine for a few more minutes.
I've tried everything, booting and rebooting the router, the cable modem, the Tivo. Nothing works. If this is incompatible with my version, I sure wish it was mentioned.
Frustrated in upstate N.Y.

Frustrated in upstate N.Y. I've had a similar experience but I know of others for whom the MA111 has worked. Personally, I think it was an incompatibility between the chipset in the MA111 and the Lucent chipset that was in my Apple Airport Base Station. I ended up switching over to a Belkin adapter (I didn't change anything else -- just swapped out the adapter), and my problem went away.

I changed the name from linksys to something else the first day I installed it. I also disabled the broadcast of the SSID, changed from channel 11 and enabled WEP encryption.
I do have a 2.4 GHz phone, but I don't have a problem using my laptop from the same room as the Series II TiVo.
Do you think somthing like the Linksys WRE54G Wireless G-Range Expander (http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=38&prid=629) or a Linksys WAP54G Wireless-G Access Point (http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=608) would help?
From the Linksys Web Site:
"The Wireless-G Range Expander is compatible with the Linksys WAP54G Access Point, and both the WRT54G and WRT54GS Wireless Routers. It works with both Wireless-G and Wireless-B clients so you'll get the benefits of increased coverage, even with a mixed network."

Just got a Netgear MA111 last night, and after several frustrating attempts to get Tivo to see it, I realized that it was a v2, which Tivo notes is not compatible. My question is what is the difference between v1 and v2 that make v2 not compatible?
Thanks,

The newer versions are usually produced to take advantage of lower priced components which reduce the production costs. Since the chipset is usually changed, the new "version" needs an entirely different driver.

As for the weak signal, as per tivo.com, I moved the USB adapter further away from the TiVo and the signal has now jumped to 70-80%.
I still get the back and forth between having an IP address and not.
I just unplugged my 2.4 GHz phone and the IP has not dropped for 15 minutes (before it was more like every minute).
So sounds like that could be the problem. Is there anything I can do, short of getting a new phone, to eliminate/reduce the interference?

Other things that might help a bit: Try changing the wireless to use channel 11, 1, or 6. Many people report 11 has fewer problems with 2.4GHz phones.
Move the phone's base as far away from your wireless access point as possible.
Use the phone with the antenna down.

Unfortunately, the phone base is downstairs, almost directly under the wireless router and neither one can be moved. I tried putting the phone base antenna down, but that did not help.
I'm already using channel 6. I'll try going to channel 1 or back to channel 11.
If nothing else works, I will either look into the 5.4 MGhz phones or go back to my old 900 MGhz.

Ok, I am at my Wit's end here.
About a month back lightning surged through my phone line and killed my Tivo's Modem. Since then I have been trying to find ways to fix it. It took me a week just to get the phone line repaired and isolate all the damage.
I finally got an acceptable Wireless adapter for my Tivo since I can no longer connect by phone, but the Wireless adapter is having some sort of issue now.
I have used this board and the Tivo site to try many things like manually entering the IP numbers and such, but have still had no luck. The best result I ever got was that it just said 'NEGOTIATING' until it timed out.
Forgive me for directly posting my query here if that's frowned upon, but I work a lot of hours in the day, and my research and problem solving time is limited, I greatly want my Tivo back.
I am using the LinkSYS WUSB11 version 2.8 USB Adapter for the Tivo and my Router is a Linksys 802.11b.
I know someone has had to have had a similar problem, and can offer some new and possibly final advice on how I can get this to work.
Thanks to all!

Hi all,
I have a question about wireless adapters. I have a Series 2 with the Belkin F5D6050 and it works fine. I just bought a second unit and I am looking to set that one up for as cheap as possible.
Is there a more up to date list of "compatible" adapters than the list on tivo.com? I see it still lists my Belkin as one that "has been reported to work", yet it wouldn't work if Tivo didn't load the drivers on there for us. So shouldn't it be listed under the "supported" section? Anyway, if I throw a bigger net, I could find a cheaper adapter. I see a real steal on a Belkin F5D6130, but that is not listed anywhere as having worked with Tivo yet. All the Linksys adapters are way too expensive for me so far.
Thanks for any info!!

In reviewing the approved USB adaptors I find all our the 802.11a type. Any hope that a 801.11g type is coming soon. I would prefer not to downgrade my net from the g type or spend the money when I would have to do it again.

I want to buy the NETGEAR MA111 usb adapter. I'm looking at one at Amazon, but I'm not sure if it will be compatible. The list over at tivo.com's adapter page (sorry, can't post a link as per forum rules for newbies) states that v. 1 will work but that v. 2 will not.
My question: Will a new, out-of-the-box adapter come with only v. 1? From my reading, I think that v. 2 is a firmware upgrade that is obtained only via upgrade from Netgear's web site. But I wanted to confirm that v. 2 doesn't ship with new products before I buy the adapter. Obviously, if it comes with v. 1, then I will not upgrade it and it should work fine with my Series 2.
I'm looking specifically at Netgear because I already have a Netgear wireless router and wireless card for my laptop. Am I correct in assuming that for compatibility's sake, it is better to stick with one manufacturer?
Thanks,
Marcus

The v1 and v2 are different pieces of hardware on the inside of the case. There is no firmware update that changes a v1 to a v2 -- they really are different adapters. The electronics are not the same -- the only thing that is the same is the outer case.

I did some quick web searching and found info that the MA111 v1 uses a Prism chipset and the MA111 v2 uses SiS 162. So, they are totally different hardware and not just a firmware upgrade.
Further searching reveals that SiS 162 drivers are only officially available for some (not all) versions of Windows at this time. SiS has released a Linux driver for that chipset, but it apparently does not work with all versions of Linux.

Thanks for the replies.
So, bottom line is this: If I buy any NETGEAR MA111 adapter without seeing the box or some label that indicates version, I will have no idea whether I'm getting v. 1 or v. 2. Thus, it will be a crapshoot as to whether the adapter will work with my Tivo Series 2.
Is it recommended that I stick with Netgear as that's my router brand?

Hello all,
I did not expect to have nearly as much trouble as I am having setting up my wireless USB adapter and router to get this thing working. Here's what I have:
Series2 running software 5.3-01-2-540
Linksys WRT54G wireless router, firmware 3.01.3 (latest)
DLink DWL-122
Connecting the wireless USB adapter made my TiVo install the firmware update for the adapter, as expected. No worries.
The wireless transmitter on the router is on, SSID transmit is enabled (customized name), and the TiVo identifies my router's SSID automatically on the "closed/peer-to-peer" screen.
That is about as far as I can get. All security features of my router are disabled, and yet when the TiVo checks all the settings, it says the wireless network could not be found or does not exist.
Why can it find the network during setup, but not when connecting?? I'm about to pull my hair out.

I am not using Peer-to-Peer mode. As I understand it, that is for sharing between two TiVo's not connected to a network.
As the instructions say, if SSID broadcasting is enabled on the router, your router will appear in the list of open networks detected by the adapter, otherwise you must select the closed network connection option, then manually enter the SSID.
The point is, it found my router on the initial setup screen, yet at the end of the setup procedure it says the network can't be found. Same result when testing the connection outside the Phone/Network current settings screen.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that I do have the router set to B only. This adapter for the TiVo is the only wireless device in the house, so I don't have the router set for G or Mixed B/G.

Well, I fixed the problem. I got it to work after quite a few resettings of my router. Got it working fine with WEP and MAC filtering, as well.
Thanks all!
I just bought a SA Tivo box and Linksys WUSB54G wireless adapter before reading this forum. My impression from the posts here is that the adapter will not work and I should return it for a 802.11b adapter. However, over on the Tivo customer support pages, I just found the following Q&A:
Why Is My 802.11g Adapter Not Any Faster than 802.11b Adapters?
We are aware it may take longer to transfer shows using an 802.11g adapter than if you used an 802.11b adapter. We are working to increase the throughput of 802.11g wireless adapters with TiVo. We added 802.11g support into the current software release because of the decreasing availability of 802.11b wireless adapters. In order to get the fastest transfer speed, we recommend the use of 802.11b adapters when possible since they are more stable and will generally allow for faster transfers.
(search reference number 14-36-01)
This appears to imply that I should be able to use my adapter after all. I haven't opened the box yet, as I don't want to pay a restocking fee. Can anyone comment on this? I'd appreciate any help - thanks.

My router is a Linksys WRT54G, and I simply had to hold down the reset button for a full 10 seconds in order for it to properly reboot. That fixed the wireless part of the router, and my TiVo was then able to connect. I didn't actually have to tweak any settings once I properly reset the router.

You probably already have sorted this out, but I had problems with the DWL-122. TiVo would not recognize the adapter. I exchanged it for a LinkSys WUSB 11, V2.8 (excellent help from a Best Buy Geek searching through the 24+ boxes of the WUSB 11s to find the correct version!). Plugged it in and it was sweet. Am I the only person who is unable to find a retail store that actually sells one of these USB adapters that is actually compatible with the new Tivo Series 2's? As somebody else pointed out, it's challenging to see the "version" of Linksys equipment in listings and on the box, so I have now TWICE bought adapters that I later discovered were not compatible.
I have a Linksys Wireless-G 2.4Ghz router and I'm just trying to find one of those Linksys adapters v 2.6 or 2.8 or 3.0, but the stores around me only seem to sell v 4.0. Where do you find the older versions? I've hunted a bit online with no luck.

I am becoming a bit frustrated with trying to set up wireless on my new TIVO. I have tried several Linksys and Netgear adaptors that were listed as suitable for TIVO, only to latter find out that they were the wrong version. I then ordered a D-Link DWL-122 directly from TIVO, thinking that it had to work if TIVO sold it. I then received a D-link DWL 120 version F instead, which requires a software download. So I go to the page to request this download and have now been waiting a week for it to happen. How long does it take to make this download happen?

I have a series 2, serial number 140-xxx. According to the adapters page the SMC2662W should work. However, I get nuthin. The adapter itself shows red power light and green link light, but there's no change at all in my tivo in terms of showing mac address.
I am a little worried that the green link light just immediately comes on and stays constantly lit. I would think that if it were doing the right think it would be more blinky.
Any tips, suggestions? The "try another adapter" suggestion isn't really a stellar one given how limited the choices are (i.e. buying and discovering that the adapter has a newer version of the firmware than Tivo supports). I don't know why this one I just got wouldn't work. Is there any sort of way I can see a 'dmesg' or something (without hacking) that might give me a clue about whether the device is even being seen? Some sort of debugging version of system info?
Lastly, how exactly would the UI acknowledge the device? For instance if I am already on the "Phone and Network Settings" page and it just says "Edit phone options" (as opposed to "Edit phone and network", and then I plug in the device, woudl I immediately see it change to "phone and network"? Is a reboot (warm or cold) mandatory? Would it take some time to show up? I believe I have tried every combination I can think of (including the recommended removal of power cord, etc...) But I'm game to try some more.
Thanks! I will continue searching the forum for answers, but my immediate search only turned up references to linksys and netgear.

you know I'm starting to think a good thing for a prospective TiVo 3 would be built-in wired and wireless ethernet ... then they'd only have to write for one or two driver cards ... with the upgrades to cards out in the world everybody loses. As long as they were firmware upgradeable to take a reasonable stab at handling near-future new security needs, etc. I think that would save pain and suffering, and perhaps many support calls which could save some $$ on the back end.

The problem is many of the adapters, particularly the cheap ones, don't have any driver support for linux.

I have a Tivo Series 2 130.xxxx Software v. 4.01b (isn't that OLD??? Why isn't it updating?). I have had so much trouble getting program information to load of late through my phone connections. It used to happen all the time with no problem -- now it's always pending restart and finally today after weeks of this I got some program information to load!! I don't even know what I did to get the program guide to load! I wanted to get an adapter so that I could use the wireless features with my D-link router Airplus Extreme G DI-624 but CompUSA told me they don't sell any of the adapters that should work because they are OLD versions (why would only an OLD version work?),. I am SO FRUSTRATED! I used to love Tivo but am growing to HATE it! Can anyone help me????

A couple of things I can tell you ... no 4.01b isn't that old (there is a new one out that adds TiVo to Go that's version 7 I believe ... I don't know what happened to v5 and v6 and maybe my memory is wrong, but 4.01b is current and they are gradually sending out the new version). Only an old version works because the TiVo people had to buy adapters and write Linux software for them ... and then the company makes a new version which may be substantially different on its insides and the old software enabling the TiVo to talk to the old network adapter doesn't work on the new network adapter. I assume TiVo will have to get hold of the new adapter and write drivers for it as well...it's very frustrating. And the companies themselves tend to write only Windows drivers for their stuff (and a TiVo is linux underneath, not Windows). Hope this explains the issues a bit - Rick

Thanks for the explanation at least it helps me understand what the problem is a bit better. However, I still don't know where to get an adapter that will work with my Tivo!!! This computer stuff is frustrating!

This computer stuff is frustrating! If nothing else, you can always order a network adapter from TiVo at their on-line TiVo Store (https://store.tivo.com/).
If willing to do a little more shopping around to get a better price, you can try searching for one of the compatible adapters (http://www.tivo.com/adapters) at a shopping comparison site like DealTime (they sponsor this site, so, there a search box for them on the main page) or PriceGrabber. You can also call around to local stores or print out the lists and go look in person.

After my TiVo got Tivo to Go, I wanted to set up a wireless network for my TiVo. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get TiVo to work properly with several USB adapters. I have tried D-Link's USB adapter (DWL-G132) which did not work. I also tried Belkin's F5D7050 which claims to be compatible with USB 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 and both the 802.11b and 802.11g standards, but it did not work with my TiVo. I was able to find Linksys' WUSB12 at CompUSA for $79.99 and it works, so I know the problem is with the adapters and not my network. I cannot find the D-Link's that TiVo's adapter page recommends in any store nearby.
With the Linksys, transfers using TiVo to go take a long time to complete. I understand that TiVo currently does not work with USB 2.0, but would like to buy an adapter that will work with USB 2.0 and 802.11g to get better speeds when TiVo implements USB 2.0. Does anyone know of such an adapter?

Wow ... because of things mentioned elsewhere in this thread (see the posts 2 or 3 back from yours above), it's not so much "USB compatibility" it's "did the TiVo software developers write a driver for this particular version of this particular network adapter." So buying one which could work in the future is a total crap shoot, since they have not written any driver software for *any* 802.11g network adapters at this point, at least not that they have announced yet. Believe me when they announce one my house immediately goes from 802.11b to 802.11g. - Rick

Yes, many people who remember the old days of where you bought a network card and had to configure it to avoid hardware conflicts and install a driver for it, think that USB avoids both of those issues. It does not. It only avoids the hassle of dealing with hardware conflicts and does not eliminate the need for a driver. Just because you can physically attach a device via USB does not mean it will magically work with any computer supporting USB.
People with older WIndows systems with USB will find the same problem: many current network cards do not support older Windows systems because the manufacturers have only written drivers for currently popular Windows systems.

What I did:
Bridge 2 WRT54G's using sveasoft firmware in WDS mode.
Connect Tivo Using NetGear FA120 (USB 2.0).
Total cost ~$75 and gives me wireless G speeds (yeah I know The USB 1.1 on the Tivo limits me to ~12Mbit... but I'll be read when USB 2.0 is enabled)

I am starting to think this is just an exercise in futility. Why does this company bother to come out with these new ideas (Tivo To Go) and options (wireless) when they really don't worl very well and it's near impossible to even find the equipment needed for them?!?! CCWF, thank you for your recommendations but the Tivo store doesn't even carry the adapters that do work with my Tivo. Does that make ANY sense??? If these adapters aren't readily available you would think Tivo would sell them! As far as shopping online -- not of the online stores actually tell you which version of the adapter they are selling. You have to be able to see the box to determine that (again how much sense does that make!!!).

I am trying to find a wireless adapter that will work with my Tivo.
I compared all of the adapters on the list that are supposed to work with Tivo and selected either the DWL 120 or the WUSB11.
Both of these require a certain version.
How do you tell what version you are buying when trying to order on line?
None of the websites seem to state a version.

I went to the full adapter list and did a search in DealTime for the first adapter on the list, the Belkin F5D6050, which forum members have reported works with your model. DealTime says OfficeMax has it in stock for $34.

Hello. I'm new here. I just set up my Tivo Series2 (40 hour) yesterday and I can't connect it to my wireless network.
I used a phone line, got it all configured first, and then I tried to get it connected to my wireless network. I'm using a D-Link DWL-122 and trying to connect to a D-Link DI-614+ router. The USB device isn't new. I've used it before with my laptop and it worked.
When I tried to set it up, Tivo changed the firmware on the wireless USB device to work with Tivo, which I assume is normal. When I go into the Wireless Settings, Tivo sees my network, and allows me to click on it to set up the WEP. And yet, when I try to test the network connection, I get, "Failed. Wireless network not found."
Why is it seeing the network in Settings, but not in Test? What am I doing wrong?

Does TiVo show a signal strength for your network on the settings/network area? Does TiVo work on the network if security is disabled?

Thank you, VanGogh! There was no signal strength showing on the Tivo. I figured the router must be too far away. So I moved it RIGHT NEXT TO the Tivo and plugged it in. Still no signal strength. In fact, the DWL-122 was blinking, trying to find a network. So, I'm thinking the DWL-122 itself is broken. *sigh*

I went to Staples and the version was not found until the sales rep opened the cellophane wrap with his pocket knife ( kudos to a good sales rep)...and pulled out the CD which stated the version...which was 4.0 on a Linksys...so it was unuseable....outer box didn't show the version...so I haven't bought one yet...good luck, shopping

Well, I went out today and picked up another D-Link DWL-122 and tried it with my Tivo. I still can't get onto my network. I even tried taking off encryption, and still nothing.
It sees my network. It just says Signal: (None). Even if the router is right next to the Tivo. I really just don't know what to do now.

Ditto. I returned my DWL-G120 back to Best Buy... looked around Best Buy (and asked them) to find a unit that was on the 'compatible' list. Unfortunately, none in stock and many were discontinued.
Went over to Staples.... saw three WUSB11's on the shelf. Looked at all three. No indicators about software version. Took the one with the lowest MAC address, took it home. Disabled wireless on my computer. Hooked it up to my computer and installed drivers onto computer, configured the WUSB11 with the SSID and WEP key. Worked fine on my PC. Disconnected it. Connected it to the TIVO (540 series, 5.3 software) ... and BINGO. It worked. Just needed to follow the instructions in the book on how to set things up (really it was able ensuring that it was using DHCP, re-entered the WEP key, and it detected my wireless network, so I selected that.
EUREKA. Both my static noise, and trying to get wireless working on TIVO... is finally resolved.
I would recommend people check out there BestBuy, Frys, CompUSA, Staples, OfficeMax to just get the 'B' adaptor that works (based on the recommended list) and give up on the 'G'. One day, in the future, G will work, and we will grumble and be unhappy that we paid for the 'B' for a short time.
For me, it was worth it, because my closest phone jack is two rooms away, and I haven't heard/seen anyone get ANY G adaptor to work.
Wasn't worth the headache to keep trying for me.
Good luck all !!!
Thanks,
Andy
P.S. There are still two more WUSB11's at the Staples where I picked mine up in Campbell, CA if you happen to be in the area :-)
Funny... BestBuy guys said "ugh... Tivo", when I returned my DWL-G120 and asked them to find one of the 'compatible wireless adapters ' from my list. They tried their best. But seems like a lot of people are coming in, trying and returning wireless adaptors at Best Buy.

At this point, I'm confused about what "recommended adapter" means, in this context. Tivo sells it, Tivo claims it works, but if when one has problems, Tivo says, (and I'm quoting here) "some people have problems with that adapter. Maybe you should try a different one."
This, by the way, is about the D-Link DWL-122.

Thanks to all in this message thread and others.
I have Two series 2 boxes both wirelessly connected using D-Link DWl-122 USB adapters to a Linksys Wrt54G router. Everything works great including Photo's and music. Transferring shows between boxes works fine also but is VERY SLOW a 1 hour show can take about 4 hours to transfer. When I read about the TiviToGo availability, I decided to upgrade the connections for better speed.
On box 1 i use the Linksys USB200M connecter ($30 Best Buy) and a Linksys WGA54G game adapter($99 Best Buy). Configured DHCP to the wirless network. Installed and working in about 2 minutes. Rather than pay another $100 for a second game adapter, I simply used anouther USB200M on my second box, and a 25' ethernet CAT5e cable to connect the second Tivo box to my wirless router (WRT54G).
I now get real time transfer of shows without interruption (wait a couple of minutes when transfer intiated to FF through those pesky commercials). It's a little bit expensive but it WORKS!!

I accidentally purchased a V4 adpater and the box did specify that it was a version 4 .. once I returned it I found a version 2.8 and it works great

I've concluded that TiVo, as a concept, is brilliant. TiVo as a service is very good. TiVo hardware is ok, but certainly not brilliant. And TiVo customer support is among the worst in the consumer arena. I'm not talking about the "answer the phone" kind of support, I'm talking about supporting the product with upgrades so that we can actually use it the way it's intended.
I have a 240 series TiVo with an SMC 2662W that works just fine. I went out today and bought a new 2662W to use with my new 540 series. The TiVo doesn't even recognize there's a device attached. I tried hooking up the new 2662 to my old TiVo: same thing, the TiVo doesn't even know it's there.
I've checked MicroCenter, CompUSA, Circuit City, Best Buy, Office Depot and Staples, and this 2662W is the ONLY supposedly supported wireless network card I can find locally. Most of the cards on TiVo's list are obsolete, having been replaced with newer models, but TiVo can't be bothered to provide updated drivers to support current devices. What a crock of ****. They're touting their TiVo-to-Go service as if it were the second coming, but they're going to have a lot of screaming customers when people discover they can't even buy the network components necessary to make it work.
If Dell provided the level of support that TiVo does, it would still be a tiny niche player selling PC boxes out of an apartement somewhere. If TiVo can't get it's act together, it never will be profitable. I guess I'm going to have to mail order the DWL-122, since it seems to be the one device that's still available that is relatively certain to work on a series 2. But I'll be damned if I'm going to order it from TiVo, and reward them for their incompetence.

Let me first start by saying I'm a total newbie to TiVo. Only had it for about two weeks now. So far its been great!
I also have the Linksys WUSB12 wireless compact USB adapter. It works fine, but I had trouble with it. At first, the TiVo box would recognize my network but couldn't connect. It kept telling me DHCP failed. It also told me the WEP key was incorrect. Finally I broadcast SSID and disabled the WEP encryption and then it worked fine. I haven't had a chance since then to tinker with it but I'll play with it this weekend. Don't like the idea of my home network open like that.

I'm having the same problem many people seem to be having with their DWL-122 -- my TiVo simply doesn't connect to it. The worst part is, it seems to pick up the network -- it's found the Network Name. But I simply can't get it to connect. I don't know what to do. I've talked to TiVo support several times, and the best they've come up with is the always-helpful "unplug everything, then replug everything" method. Incredibly, that didn't work. I moved my router to right near my TiVo (no fun task) and I'm going to hardline it from the router into the TiVo using an ethernet/USB connector. Hopefully, that will eliminate the problem. But if anyone else has any suggestions, i'd love to read them...
BTW, I didn't install any drivers on my computer from the DWL-122 CD b/c I'm running an SMC card that seems to be working fine. Do I need to do this?
Thanks...

I have had the same problem with both the DWL-122 and the Linksys WUSB11 V3.
Unless I disabled WEP, it would recognize my adapter for less than a minute then it would become "undetected".
When I called TiVo support, the support rep said they're using the DWL-122 in-house. I didn't think to ask if they have WEP enabled.
I love the rest of the features provided by TiVo, but setting up the network has been a nightmare!

Ok, I bought a 240 series TiVo this weekend, took it to a friends and did the guided setup. I then took it home and plugged in my DWL 122 wireless USB adapter. Going to a linksys wrt54g Access Point. I can set it up, enter a WEP key, SSID, etc.. and it even gets an IP address which I can ping from another machine. I do a test connection and it works fine, no problem. When I try to connect to TIVO service, it errors out on connecting. It sits there for a few minutes and in paren's it says configuring and eventually errors out and says error configuring. I have not successfully connected since the initial guided setup.
Side note, I did the initial guided setup and it sat there and did the 2 calls and downloads, but when it said let the thing sit there for 4-6 hours, I didn’t have time, so I didn’t let it do that. Everything works fine on the box. I can view TV, record, view program info, even set up a few season passes. But the dang wireless won’t connect to the tivo service.
I initially though it might be something with a firewall, but I don’t think that is it. O, BTW, TIVO, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, setup support for WPA. Having to use WEP is just as bad as leaving my wireless wide open for anybody to get into. I can break a 40-bit WEP key in under 3 minutes with less than a 30 minute packet dump. A tangent I know, but if you don't support WPA, you might as well not support WEP. WEP is very flawed and should be banished.
Needless to say, I have the WRT54G setup with 128bit WEP encryption, MAC filtering and the firewall is disabled on the AP for now to ensure it is not causing problems.
Now on the other side, I have a NetGear Router/SPI (stateful packet inspection) firewall and outside that is my cable modem. So the TIVO has to go through my Access Point, to my firewall/router to my cable modem. Now I talked to TIVO support last night and they gave me 2 TCP ports and 1 UDP port that the TIVO communicates on.(cant remember them off the top of my head) But I don’t think that is the issue because I believe the firewall will allow any inbound connections that are initiated by an internal host.
So back to the issue that I have seen in these forums. It is like stabbing in the dark. Now, I don’t know which version of TIVO software I am at, but I will check that later and repost. I guess I’m just wondering if anybody else has a similar setup and was able to get the box to connect successfully, because at this point, I’m ready to take the thing back to Best Buy and say to hell with TIVO. I’m not even going to touch on the mistake that TIVO has made, but the trend is people dumping home phones for cell phones, they should realize this.
Anyways, any help would be appreciated. Suggestions, guidance, personal experiences/ordeals.

I was having consistent trouble with either the DWL-122 or the Linksys WUSB11 v3 (both of which are supposed to work) until I disabled WEP. Then, it worked fine. I was not using MAC filtering. I tried both 64-bit and 128-bit WEP - neither worked.
Now, I have a USB-to-Ethernet adapter (the Linksys USB200M) connected to a D-Link wireless adapter designed for connecting games to wireless (the DWL-G730AP). The D-Link adapter is configured when connected to your PC, and I have re-enabled WEP. It has worked fine for the past week. So far as the TiVo knows, it's on a wired connection.
I hope TiVo is listening - I am NOT a happy customer when I think about the MANY hours and loads of extra $ getting to this solution cost me.

This depends on so many factors I'm not sure how to answer without knowing the particulars of your setup.
One thing to be sure of (this may be too obvious, but just in case...) if you disable WEP on the wireless adapter on your TiVo you also need to disable it on the rest of your wireless system.
My network has a cable modem connected to a D-Link wireless router, a DI-524. I have a D-Link range extender that boosts the signal power in the rest of my house. I had initially set up the TiVo with a DWL-122. All of these parts need to have a consistent security setup to be able to talk to each other.
Look for instructions that use words like "security", "wireless settings", and/or "encryption" along with a "key" or "password" to find where you can enable/disable WEP or other security features. On the TiVo itself, these are part of the Wireless Settings in the Phone & Network Setup area.
Hope this helps.

I have been having issues trying to get my tivo to recognize my wireless network (using a DI-624 router and DWL-122 network adapter) and I found many similar problems and questions here but not many solutions so I wanted to post what worked for me.
I had similar issues to others here in that tivo could see the SSID but claimed not to find the network. Also frustrating is that I could see other networks (live in a large condo building) and even connect to some of them, but not my own (yes I could use someone else's technically, but then what did I buy this equipment for and I want the added functionality).
In short, all I did was lower the transfer rate on the router ("TX" in the Advanced>Performance tab) to 2 Mbps. This allowed Tivo to recognize the network. Made a connection and then raised the transfer to 11Mbps. And now it works great. This may not solve all problems, but it might help a few people.
Good luck.

I've seen mention of similar problems, but I haven't found a solution yet.
I have a new Series 2 tivo (Software 7.1a), and a DWL-122, and I can't it to connect with my AirPort Express base station.
I've tried it with 128-bit WEP, 40-bit WEP, and without any security. The TiVo is able to find the network name all the time, which is some indication that the adapter is working. No matter what the settings are on the base station or TiVo, though (I've tried turning off the 802.11g on the AirPort so it's only at 802.11b now; adjusting the multicast rate; changing the passwords to be 13 or 5 characters, then entering them in hexidecimal), it always fails at the same step--saying that the network could not be found.
Any ideas, or know what else I could try?
Thanks!

Some additional information I meant to include...
The TiVo updated the firmware on the DWL-122 when I first plugged it in.
I can connect to a peer-to-peer network with my powerbook, so this would seem to mean that the D-link is working, right?
Thanks!

Well, I seem to have fixed it. For those interested, I got it to work by turning off WEP, dropping it down to only 802.11b, and setting a specific wireless channel (8, although I bet that doesn't matter).
Once that worked, I added everything back in (back to 802.11b/g, any chanel, and 128-bit WEP). So, as others have found out, the best way seems to be to make it as simple as possible, get it to connect and find your network, then add in the other complications (security) that you want...

My Settings page shows me that my signal strength (with my recently installed approved Linksys wireless adapter) ranges between 20% ("poor") and 22% ("marginal"). Repositioning the base station can get me as high as 50% ("good"). Despite this, I see no difference in picture or music quality using Home Media Option, or in system response at the various reported signal levels.
What gives ?

Never done this before so here goes. I do not have a home network but would like to connect the computer to the tivo media setup. Please simply tell me what I need at the computer and what I need at tivo. A brand name and number would be very helpful for a simple purchase at tivo store or best buy. Went to best buy today and it was hopeless to figure out what equipment is needed. Thanks

Changing the transmit speed sounded like a really creative and hopeful idea, so I reconfigured my system with the DWL-122. I tried a variety of speeds on my DI-524 router, and it seemed to almost get linked in but never quite got there, or didn't stay connected.
I tried some "sniffer" software I downloaded but it didn't work with my network card in my computer. Does anyone know of some good utilities that detect what's going on? I suspect that the TiVo is not able to complete some part of the sequence necessary to get associated with the access point, and the problem is timing-dependent. (Since I've had the same problems with two different brands of adapter, I'm inclined to blame TiVo rather than the adapters.)
I'm back to my more complex/expensive solution (USB to wired Ethernet, Ethernet to Wireless client adapter), but since I seem to be stuck with the DWL-122 I'd like to find a solution that works with it, if possible (all this debugging caused me to miss the 14-day return policy from the online retailer) .
Thanks for any ideas!

The wireless network detects if some of its communication gets garbled, and resends until it goes through correctly. At lower signal strengths, the TiVo will have to resend more data than if you have a better signal. You'll get the same data (and so the same picture/music) but it may take a little longer to get there. The difference in timing is not necessarily something that a person would notice -- we're talking about differences in the micro- and millisecond range, typically. If you're sending a lot of data, you might start to detect a difference. If you're down to 20-22% you're more at risk of losing the connection if some interference happens along. In my house, I had a problem with my neighbor's 2.4 GHz cordless phone, and with the microwave oven. I wasn't able to move the base station, so I got a "range extender", and my signal is typically in the 80-100% range. Hope this helps.

Hello, I’m attempting to install one of the recommended wireless adaptors to my Humax. However, the recorder is not recognizing the adaptor. Also, when I go to settings and go to phone/network settings, I only have the option to edit phone settings. Any advice?

You can easily find an older version WUSB11 on eBay
Just search on either:
WUSB11 ver 2.6
WUSB11 ver 2.8
There are plenty of them out there.

I had the same problem. If the dvr does not recognize the adapter the network settings will not appear in the set-up for you to configure.

My Phillips Tivo works on my Netgear wireless, I think w111 v1 (updated) at the Tivo end. I installed Tivo desktop on my Mac, and turnde it "on". The program updates fine, but the Tivo won't recognize my mac. Is it a secret TCP setting, or should I not even try to get photos/music?
Thanks

Tivo thankyou for making my life real fun the last 4 weeks. First i baught the D-link Dwl-G120 wireless adapters because you were selling them on the website, at that time u did not specify version B2. Then about a month later I see you note that I have to have version B2 of the above adapter. Now after calling every computer store in Michigan I find out there is no version B2 in michigan. Now what do I do??? I call D-Link sales they would know. Guesse what?? DWL-G120 is not even in the stores yet. oh After countless hours of looking for this stuff ohhhh I am not happy.

All they had to do was post in there note on the "recommended wirless adapters" that these adapters are not in stores yet. I wish i could get a free one with all the time I put into looking for this stuff it would have paid for it. I WILL POST WHEN I START SEEING THEM IN THE STORES.

Hello.. Looking for the answer to what is probably a dumb question but since I am helping my girlfriend install this I would rather look dumb here than in front of her
I did read this entire thread and do some additional searching but I just wantto be sure that what I am thinking is correct....
She has a Verizon DSL connection with a combo modem/wireless router that is 802.11g. I know that Tivo doesn't "do" G (except for the workaround :) but since she is just going to eliminate the phone line and occasionally use the HMO to play mp3s I think B is fine.
My question is if I buy one of the reccomended adapters it will work on the G network even though it is a B card, right?
BTW she has a 140 box running ver. 7.1 software.

If it's all standard, an 802.11b card should work fine on an 802.11g network -- however, with at least older 802.11g routers, having even one item connect as 802.11b will cause the entire network to drop to the slower 802.11b speed. More expensive newer routers don't have this problem.

Hi!
Need Help! I just installed a wireless system (Router Netgear MR814 11Mbps and Adapter Netgear WG111 54 Mbps). I also rec'd the new Tivo software today.
It understands the Adapter and I can use the Tivo to go, connect to Tivo via wireless, schedule shows online, but using the music and photos options dosen't work. When I click into the option it shows the Best Buy music and photos from Nikon and they of course work. I added my own music and photos but they do not go to my Tivo server.
Any Help Please!
Thank You
Tom

Make sure your firewall is setup to let Tivo access the files. I had the same problem with mine, when I set it up.
