Hi!

Need Help! I just installed a wireless system (Router Netgear MR814 11Mbps and Adapter Netgear WG111 54 Mbps). I also rec'd the new Tivo software today.
It understands the Adapter and I can use the Tivo to go, connect to Tivo via wireless, schedule shows online, but using the music and photos options dosen't work. When I click into the option it shows the Best Buy music and photos from Nikon and they of course work. I added my own music and photos but they do not go to my Tivo server.
Any Help Please!
Thank You
Tom

Make sure your firewall is setup to let Tivo access the files. I had the same problem with mine, when I set it up.

Ive been real happy with my tivo of two days now!! BUT.... dang tivo software is persnicity about its usb adapters... I have a netgear wireless setup in my house, so I went with the wg111 for my adapter... now before i get started, I am a network engineer, so I knew I would probably screw it up so I read and read and read some more before buying my equipment and bringing it home...
:
Now comes the fun part. Hooked it all up, everything went smooth, hooked it up to my home theatre setup really, really easy. but went to add the nic in... eeehhhh no-go. so I remembered that I had to have the 7.1 software for my nic, ok fine. finnally got it this afternoon, and was estatic to get it so fast.. that was at four this afternoon. Finally at 8:30pm I gave up and started looking for other adapters to buy per the webpage suggestions. went to best buy, bought every usb wireless they had!! brought em home, hooked up the SAME nic i had before but it was a wg111na instead of a wg111t, and bigity bam!! fired right up, set up the dhcp, i was hooked up baby!! LOL so Im going to send an email to whoever sets up the nic list and tell him, not ALL wg111's are the same.... but anyways, thanks for listening to me ramble. Talk to you guys later, im going to hop over to the help section and see if I can change these GOD AWEFUL colors on my grid.

Thanks,

Dave

To take it even further, make sure you don't have two firewalls on the PC

My son's PC gave me fits with TiVo Desktop until I realized he had a firewall running that came with the anti-virus package (forget which one) in addition to the Windows XP personal firewall. Had to open ports in both. I guess I could have disabled the second one but everything else was working so I just left it there. ;)

Ok, just purchased my 2nd tivo. tried to connect after initial setup with a phone line and I can get the wireless connected to the network @ 95% and I cant get the DHCP to work! I tried reseting my router and removed all WEP and MAC requirements and still no luck.

The link worked fine for me but it just gets me started. It doesn't solve the problem I am running into. Do you have any advice for my thread under Connecting to network?

Hello, I’m attempting to install one of the recommended wireless adaptors to my Humax. However, the recorder is not recognizing the adaptor. Also, when I go to settings and go to phone/network settings, I only have the option to edit phone settings. Any advice?
If it really is "approved" then it should see it. So my guess is that is not the EXACT version of hardware or firmware that Tivo can deal with. I went through the same thing a couple weeks ago, then I found this forum and got the right hardware. In my case I needed a 802.11b model (b-mode only) adapter because I was setting up a peer-to-peer network between 2 Tivos with no router or AP. Apparently nothing with '802.11g' capability will work in a p2p setup.

What is the model, hardware version and firmware version? It should all be on the side of the box. Then go to the Tivo site and find the *complete* adapters list to see if it is really on the list for *your* Tivo box (certain ones are incompatible with certain devices). It is all clear as mud...

Just an FYI folks, I was in CompUSA today looking for a compatible adapter and YES I finally found the version number on the outside of the box. It resides in very SMALL print on the barcode label....it's almost hidden in there...the ones I looked at today clearly said v4 on them. Caveat Emptor !!

Are there any adapters that are not listed or are listed as uncompatible which can be used with a 140 series?

For example, I know I have used a MN-510 before with an old 60 hour tivo...

Strangely enough, although it's listed with a red thumbs down, I use a WUSB12 with my 140 series. Works wonderfully!!!!

The sad part about the Linksys version numbers is that they are NOT on the box. You have to get the little beast home before you aer working on upgrading your software for the Tivo box. I'm assuming that this is a driver issue. But I'm having a hard time understanding why it will take "up to five business days" to download a driver.

I bought my version 2.6 from KMART...found the version number in very small letters on the box! Were talking Linux drivers...not as simple to construct as Windows drivers!!

Getting a TiVo working with a wireless adapter (no land phone line) has been quite an ordeal (40 hours?). Here's what I learned along the way. Maybe it will help someone else trying to do this!

1) If you have to borrow someone's phone for your first phone call for Guided Setup: Set it up as if you were at home making the call. If you have satellite at home, don't set things up as cable because that's what is at the home of the borrowed phone line. Ditto on all the rest of the questions.

2) Buying your wireless router and adapter:
a) Buy both of the same brand. Otherwise they might not talk to each other well.
b) Make sure you use the adapters recommended by TiVo. Otherwise they won't work.
c) Don't trust what the sales guy at the retail store tells you. Even with TiVo's recommended list in my hand, they sold me a version that wouldn't work. I had to return it to the store and buy a different brand. Check those version numbers!! D-Link's version numbers are listed where the serial numbers are on the outside of the box. I wound up with NetGear because Circuit City didn't have a D-Link model on TiVo's list.

3) Using a NetGear wireless router and adapter:
a) You will have to have a computer to set these up, and an active internet connection. Otherwise you cannot connect to the internet to register the product. You must register in order to get telephone support. If you use telephone support, don't expect to get a technician whose first language is English, or who can answer a simple question (they apparently read from a manual, and if you interrupt with a question, they simply read the next line). You must also go on-line to set up your WEP key because (at least for the model I bought) no WEP key is pre-installed on the router. You will set up the WEP key using some phrase you like and a hexadecimal key will be generated. Write this number down because the generated key, not the phrase you like, will be the one you will enter from the Tivo box to make everything talks to each other.

4) Know what types of cables you will need:
a) If the wireless router has only ethernet connections, and your computer has only USB connections, you will have special needs. I bought a USB to ethernet adapter, which worked fine after a simple software install for the adapter. I got mine from Radio Shack.
b) Make sure if you need an ethernet cable, that's really what you buy. I tried a "networking cable" from Circuit City, which a different sales guy than the first one assured me was an ethernet cable. It wouldn't work. Make sure it says "ethernet" cable on the package. Best Buy had a nice selection.

5) If you have a USB hub:
a) Make sure you have a high speed hub. Otherwise you will get messages that say you are trying to connect a high speed USB device to a low speed USB hub. (I didn't risk ignoring this message. I bought a new one at Radio Shack.)
b) Make sure you have a hub that plugs into an electrical socket. Otherwise you will get a message saying the hub doesn't have enough power to run the device.

6) Do things in the right order. Make your land line call first. Get your wireless router set up and test it. Install the wireless adapter on your TiVo box, change your network settings, and test the connection. Whatever you do, don't go through guided setup again because you will have to go find that land phone line to do it!

Perhaps my experience was unique. Maybe I'm just not enough of a techie. But my original gift to my daughter was supposed to be a Humax Tivo Box and a year's subscription to Tivo service. I wound up buying a wireless router, wireless adapter, USB to ethernet adapter, a new high-speed powered USB hub, and two cables: about $200 more than I had planned. Add up all the time I spent buying these items, returning some of them, phone calls to tech support, cussing when things didn't work, etc. WHEW! One thing for sure, I am DETERMINED.

All I can say is that I really love MY OWN TiVo (which was a snap to set up with a phone line) or I would have given up somewhere along the way.

Good luck!!

I've searched around and haven't been able to find this topic so hopefully I'm not duplicating. Anyway, I have an ibook and use it wirelessly with my airport. I want to view my photos from iphoto on my t.v. Do I just need to use a USB cable to connect the Tivo to the Airport? I keep seeing links to various d-link systems but do I need those if I already have my wireless Airport system? Excuse my ignorance on this!

teacherkris,

If I understand correctly, as long as your iBook is the machine running the TiVo server software and the rest of the systems can see your iBook. I don't think you'd need a wired connection.

Here's one for the Mac experts:

I have an Airport Extreme Based Station and recently got an Airport Express I'm current using as a repeater and to connect to my stereo. I would like to connect it to my DirecTiVo Series2, as well, as was wondering if I could simply use the USB jack in the Airport Express to go directly into the TiVo. If not that, can I use the Ethernet jack as an out, and then get an Ethernet to USB adapter to go into the TiVO?

Thanks for the help.

Hi All:

I've read links till I'm blue.........
Just bought a series 2 stand alone direct from Tivo, They shipped me the Netgear USG G-111....how ever the Tivo has the old (5.0) software.

1. How do I specify a cable card in my setup?
2. how do I connect with Vonage to get the updated software that should have been included?

It's been a lousy 24 hours

Thanks,

Don

I have v7.1b on a series 2 540. I bought a Netgear G router with the recommended usb G Netgear adaptor indicated on TiVo's site. I've turned off all security settings and cannot get the Tivo to find the network. I have a PC and Mac able to use the wireless network though.

The odd part, is that the Tivo will detect and connect to two of my neighbor's wireless networks, a Linksys and 2wire. However it cannot seem to find my own wireless network from within my house! How is this possible?

I've seen mentioned here the idea of running an 802.11b router for my TiVos (one of which is a Humax DVD burner so doesn't yet support 802.11g); I replaced my 802.11g router and have the old linksys 802.11b. However, I'm trying to remember networking limitations. If I go from my cable modem to the 802.11g router (default internal IP address 192.168.0.1, external address whatever Comcast gives it, and I will have set it to be "G-only" rather than mixed mode), can I just plug the 802.11b router into it (default internal address 192.168.1.1)? and let it get an external address from the 802.11g's DHCP pool (or use a fixed address I suppose in the 192.168.0.x non-DHCP range)? And of course use non-overlapping channels (if all my neighbors' networks make that even possible? and differring network names? Does that violate any networking standards?

I had my TIVO up and running on my home wireless network with a tivo tested and certified wireless adapter, linksys wusb11 v.3.0, for 6 months and it recently stopped working ('no network adapter found' error). I hadn't changed any network settings, or hadn't even touched the adapter. I called TIVO support, who told me it must be my adapter that went bad, but also that TIVO doesn't guarantee that wireless adapters will work. I went and bought a new, TIVO tested and certified, wireless network adapter, linksys wusb11 v.2.8, and my TIVO doesn't identify this new adapter, either. Ideas? Help, please.

If you have a good signal report on your wireless connection as viewed from TiVo software but are getting connection errors upon testing ignore those errors and go ahead and download. Most likely the download will suceed. Even if you TiVo software reports it failed upon download attempt go ahead and reboot and it will now report successful download. This wireless network software in version 7.1b has serious bugs.

I use a Linksys WUSB12 to network my TiVo. It's worked fine for a long time until now. I recently switched from cable to DSL and also a Linksys wireless router to an integrated SBC 2Wire wireless router/DSL Modem. Now, my TiVo finds the network, and I can see the TiVo on my modem/router's network, but I keep getting a No DHCP server error. I've called TiVo, and that didn't help (told me to remove firewall for one sync - never could sync and the other one was "sorry, can't help"". Curiously I also see an error on the TiVo that says that the password may be incorrect yet it shows signal strength. More info if it helps: I have a Mac running OS X 10.4.2. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Sorry if this is a rookie question--all searches led nowhere...
I have cable telephone, modem, cable package. TIVO folks say Tivo can't work with the digital phone signal thus dropped calls, failures to connect to service messages.
Short of wireless connection is there an adaptation/fix for digital phone service?

Absolutely Bull! I have AT&T digital phone service and Tivo can connect no problem. Internally in your house the digital phone service is exaclty like an analog line, unless you have digital (ISDN) phones.

i have had my Series 2 service #240 for over a year on my Linksys BEFW11S4 Ver 2 Router with firmware 1.45.10, with software version 7.1 for my home media and tivo to go options. this tivo is on a private DHCP and can connect fine to both my Dell PC with windows XP and to the internet for retrieving programming information.

i recently installed a Series 2 service #540 with a compatible Linksys WUSB11 wireless adapter to connect in similar fashion as my 240. my two tivos can exchange shows like expected. however, it's been 5 days since my 540 tivo was activated and it still cannot connect to tivo servers. i called tech support and they keep telling me to check my router. i have swapped adapters, and encounter the same problem. i even bypassed the router using a hub and wired connection to both tivos on my T1 connection and the same problem exists to rule out the router.

i am curious if anyone has issues with a 540 on a wireless B connecting to tivo servers because i cannot understand why my old 240 can connect for programming while my 540 cannot? they connect using the same hardware and interface, the only difference is the service number. anybody know what the deal is?

I posted my own response to this message since I ended up having to solve this issue myself without any helpful knowledge from Tivo Support:

If you are connecting any Series 2 Tivo to a wireless network in order to get programming information, there are caveats depending on your ISP provider.

If you cannot get your Tivo to connect to the internet and you keep getting either a "failed while configuring" or "failed while negotiating" message then you need to check the version of your Tivo software. If you are running any version other than 7.1 you need to check with your ISP provider to make sure you have a "live IP address" and they aren't "caching" communication with the open internet.

Without getting into gory details about networking schemes, it appears that most ISP's firewall their networks using what are called "caches". This is performed to filter out virus' and help secure the networks for the ISP's customers. What caching does is cause a delay in communication between your Tivo box and the Tivo servers. When this happens the Tivo servers will drop the connection all together and you will never be able to connect over the internet. The fix for this is easy, upgrade to version 7.1. You will have to do this through a phone connection.

To give a more advanced explaination (this is way over Tivo Support's heads), I worked with my T1 ISP to discover and solve this problem. Version 5 software cannot connect thru an ISP's firewall that caches packets. I was told by Tivo it was the firewall on my router....NOT TRUE. I was also told that the problem was not Tivo software related....ALSO NOT TRUE.

To prove myself correct, I asked my ISP administrator to put my IP on the open internet without caching and I was able to connect to Tivo using version 5 software. We tried the same connection going through my ISP's cache and it kept failing. So once my box was upgraded to Version 7, the box connected fine using whether or not my connection was cached. Connections thru the internet does not have to be through a router either, at least in my case for testing and troubleshooting. I only hope that Tivo at some point can understand this issue well enough to help future internet connection problems their customers may have prior to Version 7.1 of the software. On a lighter note, I enjoy both my Tivos and have learned the in's and out's of them well enough to help others so if anyone needs me to explain this better then here feel free to look me up here.

It turns out I was disconnecting the download before it was done without realizing it. TiVo would revert back to live TV at some point during the download and I thought the call was finished so I would disconnect the line. I forced another connection after reading your message and after TiVo went back to live TV I check the connection status and realized that it was still downloading. This time I was smart enough to let it finish. Sure enough about one hour later it was done. I got the pending restart message and after restarting everything has worked as advertised! :)

I just hooked up a TiVo yesterday and struggled through a problem that might be of interest to other newbies! While trying to connect the TiVo to my network today, I could not see "Edit Phone and Network Settings". I had noticed that after going through the 'Guided Setup', the software version was shown as 4.0.1 rather than 4.0.1b! After failing to find information, FAQ says that the TiVo should update after making a connection over the phone, I phoned Tech Support. I was advised that it takes several connections and several days to fully update to the latest version, unless the user forces the phone connections until the software version is updated on the 'System Information' page.

What if we have no land line.....?

I see BestBuy has the Netgear WG111NA USB adapter on sale starting today for $30 after rebates. I know there were some initial hiccups with this one on a series 2 standalone Tivo, any idea if it works ok at this point?

Also I'm guessing there's still no support for the "G" speed on this? I'm torn between this and a Linksys WUSB12, which costs a little more but I hear is easier to set up. I've got a Linksys WRT54G router currently so maybe I'll go that direction. decisions, decisions... Thanks in advance!

I have a Tivo Series 2 upstairs with a USB LinkSys adapter that has been working flawlessly for well over a year.

I recently added a second Series 2 (service # starts with 540 /// software v7.1b...)

I ordered another LinkSys adapter. It looks just the same as the first one except that where the first one has USB on both ends of the cable, this one has a cable like a USB printer has (USB into Tivo, different connection into adapter)...

Anyway, the new Tivo won't see the new adapter, and the new adapter doesn't flash network connectivity when attached to the Tivo.

I switched the adapters, and the old adapter works fine with the new Tivo. The new adapter doesn't see the network with the old TIvo...

However, the new adapter connected to the the wireless right away when I plugged it into a PC...

Any thoughts?

The version number of the adapter is important. Review back over this whole thread -- you'll see that, though, say v3.3 of an adapter will work, v3.4 will not. When the company changes the adapter, they usually manage to change it incompatibly with the existing TiVo software and drivers.
<br>
The version number is generally in tiny print someplace on the network adapter box.

Please bare with me guys. I'm new to the tivo service . though i'm good with networking.

Here's my story,

I've just bought a tivo box (tivo series2 80h) service Number starts with 540 , went throughout the guided set up and all went okay.

My problem is :
1- I cannot connect the D-Link DWL-G122 to my tivo box . from the settings page and the phone & network settings . i cannot see the wireless settings there. and my wireless adapter is not detected by my tivo box

2- My tivo box is still using software version 7.1 !! and won't upgrade to 7.2 ! ..

any one can help me here.. any help would be appreciated . thanks

Hopefully, you have resolved your issue. If not, this is what worked for me, it may be worth a look.

On my router, I limit connections to sepecific MAC addresses. There is a page on my Linksys router set up to enter the mac address from the adapter. I was running into the issue of my tivo not recognizing my network, but it found my neighbors without a problem. Once I set the MAC address in the router, Bamm, it works like a champ.

Hope this helps.

I've had a Humax Tivo Series 2 with DVD-R (80 hour model) for 2 months, and love the time shifting and DVD-saving features. However, I'm having real trouble getting it to connect and stay connected to my home's existing WiFi network. I'm semi-savvy with computers and networking, but by no means an expert. I would appreciate any help offered. Tivo connects fine through the phone line, but who wants to string that line across the room if wireless is at hand? So I bought, from Tivo itself, a USB adapter, model D-Link DWL-122, speed "b", not "g", and it just ain't working.

The problem is two-fold: Problem 1 - For some reason, the Tivo recognizes the USB adapter when first connected, but later appears to "forget" that the adapter is connected, and thus fails to get the upcoming shows each night. Checking the network status in the morning, it states "connection failed, no adapter". Removing the adapter and snapping it back in, Tivo re-recognizes the adapter, finds the network and assigns itself an address, no problem. Why, 2 hours later, when I go back to check the network status, does it say "no network adapter"?

Problem 2 - Immediately after removing and snapping the adapter back in, I select "test the connection" and gets through the process fine. Then I tell it to "connect to the Tivo service now" to try to force a manual update of the tv shows. It gets through "preparing to connect" but fails at the "negotiating" stage.

Fixes tried: I've restarted the Tivo several times. I've moved the Tivo closer to the wireless router to get more signal. Also tried going through the network setup again and reinstalling the network password (a 10 digit WEP password), but it fails to work no matter what I try.

The network: SBC/Yahoo DSL connection, with Netgear wireless router. Address 192.168.0.1. Router is in the next room, and Tivo notes signal strength of 50-70%. A computer located next to the Tivo connects to the wireless network flawlessly at any time, so I don't think the problem is on the network side.
The Tivo: Humax 80 hour model with DVD recorder. Remote configured to control the Tivo and the channel changing.
The cable TV: Comcast digital cable in Palo Alto, CA, with Motorola cable box.

Anyone have any ideas? Tivo's web site suggests maybe there is a problem with WEP vs. WPA passwords, and the web site has screens showing tinkering with these settings, but for some reason those options don't appear on my Tivo on the "phone & network" screen.

I would rather not have to connect via phone line if there's a wireless network available. Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.

Adrian

OK, so I've had my Tivo Series 2 (software 7.2.0) connected to my Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 Ghz router (WRT54G) with a Linksys USB adapter (WUSB12), no problems since January. A few weeks ago I had to switch laptops, so I connected my internet straight to my new laptop (thus disconnecting the wireless network and Tivo connection).

My IP address comes up as 169.254.70.47 on the Network Connection screen.

Of course, my Tivo information has now run out and I tried to connect my internet back through the wireless router. But the Tivo is not able to make a connection. I go through the process but Tivo cannot connect. Then I tried to set-up the network again through the Tivo with no luck.

I tried pulling the wireless adapter out of the Tivo and test the connection. But I got a "no DHCP server" found.

I don't know if this problem is due to the software I'm running, the switching of chords, or something else.

Does anyone have any ideas what to do from here? Obviously I'm a little frustrated because at this point my Tivo is worthless. Also, I don't have a land line. Thanks a lot.

Jake

Reboot your router, then the tivo.

I tried that and it still didn't work. I got a N24 message and a N02 message on the Network Setup program. It says a DHCP server could not be located on the network.

Look at the status pages in your router. Is the DHCP server enabled? Have you enabled MAC address filtering and not included the Tivo adapter's address? For some reason your Tivo isn't seeing the router. You might repeat the wireless setup process on the Tivo.

I apologize if this has been asked before, I’ve read everything I can on wireless for the series 2 and have had no luck. In short my brand new Humax 80 hour DVD-R/RW Tivo isn’t recognizing the Netgear WG111 wireless adapter. I’ve tested the USB Ports on the back of the S2 and they respond fine (I hooked up my wired network adapter and it had no problems). I plugged the wireless adapter into my other S2 140hour Tivo and it registered just fine. So why isn’t the 80 hour Humax DVD-r/rw Tivo recognizing the wireless adapter?

UPDATE 8:57PM

I made a call to the folks at Tivo and found out that the Humax R59580 is shipping with the v5.x software. The solution to my problem is to get the update to the v7.2 which supports the 802.11.g network adapter. the very nice & professional customer service rep put me on the "priority list" for the update and I can expect it in 1-3 business days. :D

I have a Linksys WUSB11 which I've connected to my Series 2 running on Tivo software version 7.1 and my home network is on a Apple Extreme. I've through the set up and the Tivo finds the network (usually with +80% signal srength) however when I try to connect it fails because the router cannot find a gateway. Tivo support says I need to make sure ports 8101, 8102, and/or 8200 are open on the router; Apple support say they are only responsible for getting me internet access through the router, port configuration etc is up to the user. OKAY....so much for Support lines.

If anyone knows how to work through this situation I'd really appreciate your help

I, too, have read the posts, tried everything I can think of and no success. I am a Tivo newbie, am instantly loving it, but cannot seem to get the wireless connection to work. I do not have a land line, have Vonage, and thus am going with wireless via my comcast cable modem to connect to tivo service (I did guided setup via landline at a neighbors house in same zip code).

I have a Netgear WG111 adapter plugged in to the back of the tivo (with serial no. that starts WG72.... which the tivo link of supported adapters says should work).

I have an Iogear wireless router and print server. An all in one deal. Model GWA501. Once, and only once, did the Tivo find this wireless network and at that time the screen indicated 80% signal. When doing "test connection" it fails on the third step, saying, failed to connect. Tivo phone help says the Iogear router is not supported. Person I spoke to said it was a gateway not a router thus my problem. Hmmm?

So, I went out and bought a brand new belkin wireless g router with built in print server (model no. F5D7231-4P). Tivo cannot find this wireless network either. Crap.

I am using no password protection for either wireless network to make things simple but no luck.
The Tivo is a 540 Series 2 running version 7.1

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have been unable to find a Tivo list of supported routers (like they do with adapters).

Thanks,
Chris

Hello - I just moved, and now I've got a Tivo problem.

I have a Netgear MA111 wireless adaptor. I know it works with my Tivo because it worked superbly at my old house (which is in the same zip code less than a mile away).

However, now I'm trying to set up the wireless here. I just got my Comcast Linksys router installed, and I was able to set up all the computers with no difficulty. The Tivo finds my network with no problem, but it keeps saying "No DHCP Server." I've gone into my router settings and confirmed that the DHCP Server is enabled, but still no luck.. any ideas? Thanks.

Also - even though the Tivo can find my network fine, the network never sees the Tivo trying to connect to it.

Update: I called Tivo about the problem I'm having getting this DWL-122 to connect to my network. After a half an hour, their suggestion was to try another brand of adapter.

I am not a happy customer.

How ironic is that? Tivo "unofficially" reccomended to me that i try the DWL-122. The tivo guy said that is what they use. But now i've had nothing but problems. And no one in an official capacity (at tivo, humax, dlink) can explain what the problem is.

If you are trying to get your TiVo, Sony, Toshiba or Pioneer Series2 DVR to work with a Linksys wireless adapter, please read this thread:

You don't have a Tivo to be full. You have a DVR. It's like the difference between Kleenex and tissue paper. There is no way that I'm aware of to transfer programs from the Motorola DVR you have, and if there is, the Tivo community forums isn't a likely place to find help doing so, sorry.

It is technically a Tivo.

Cox Digital Cable said it's Tivo. I'm being charged $10 a month for "Tivo Service" so it is Tivo.

My Motorola DCT 6412 also has a USB connection so obviously you can hook it up to the computer to transfer files, I just don't know how. It also had three outlets (yellow, red, white) so if anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

If you want to insist that it's a Tivo, go ahead. If you can find the word Tivo on your bill or any of Cox's materials, I'd be glad to stand corrected. If you could really get a dual tuner unit from Cox with Tivo software in it, there'd be some really happy folks around here. You've been confused by the fact that many folks use the name Tivo when referring to any Digital Video Recorder, much as many folks use the word Kleenex to refer to any facial tissue.

The USB port on your Motorola DVR doesn't in itself indicate you can use it to transport files to or from the unit.

Why else would there be a USB port? There is a USB port to transport files to the computer. The user guide says that you can transfer files, it just does not say how.

You hae a DirecTV model. Ethernet is enabled only on standalone models.

I believe it is possible to get your model working via ethernet by hacking it, but you'll have to see the TiVo Underground forum for details on that.

Rest assured that you do -not- have a TiVo. Cox lied to you.

I'd imagine TiVo, Inc. might want to hear about this, so that they could sue Cox for copyright infringement. Hell, since it's apparently on your bill, you might even want to sue them for falsifying financial records or something.

Perhaps I'm being a bit facetious with regard to all this sue talk, but improperly using TiVo, Inc.'s name is a subject many of us take pretty seriously.

As for your original question, just hook the A/V outputs of your Cox DVR to a video capture card on a computer, and transfer that way.

Maybe I made a mistake. I thought that is what my dad's bill had said or at least they told me it was on a Tivo but oh well.

COX said that the USB Port and AV Outlets are "inactive" I believe (the yellow white red outlets) but would it work if I put a video capture card on my computer if COX said Motorola made them "inactive"?

I just have so many playoff Pacer basketball games from last year I really want on my computer :( :(

I don't doubt that some genius at Cox told you it was a TiVo (either due to ignorance or shady sales tactics), but I would be a bit surprised to actually see it on your bill.

Regardless, the USB ports probably are inactive, but I don't understand how the A/V outputs are inactive... They're the things you're using to hook the DVR up to the TV, right? Or is there perhaps a second set of A/V outputs that is indeed inactive? Worst-case, you could split the A/V outputs you're currently using to connect to the TV, and send one side to the TV and the other to the computer.

Lastly, this is not only off-topic and starting to hijack this thread, but it's also off-topic for this entire site. Thus, this is as far as I'll take it. Good luck.

Hello everyone, first time posting, amazing site. I just recently purchased a Tivo Series 2 TCD240040. I like most here want to set it up on my wireless network.

I currently have a Netgear Wgr614na 802.11 (g) router. I was curious to know if I can use this router or do I have to get a 802.11 (b?) also from reading the posts it appears that the MA111 netgear card is no good. Does anyone have this router and what usb adapter do they recommend? Other than the adapter is there anything else I need?

All help is highly appreciated...

Even if you go with an 802.11b adapter, an 802.11g router should be fine, as long as you have it running in dual b/g mode.

question for you guys.
Running 2-pionners on a usb200M v1 (57&810) and both are software version 7.2. One is upstairs on a linksys ethernet bridge and the one downstairs is plugged directly into the linksys 54g router. The router is set for both b&g and the transfer between the 2 is a little slow but tolerable.
My pc is running a linksys pci wireless card and my problem is the pc side. Whenever I transfer with tivo desktop 2.2 (from the downstairs tivo) it connects for a couple of minutes and then stops. On the taskbar (bottom right) it tells me in that stupid bubble thing, that I'm now connected. I have dsl, so I never left the connection. When running straight internet I'm fine, but tivo transfers somehow disconnect me and I'm never able to transfer more than 300 megs.
Any clues???
TIA

Does the Linksys router have up to date firmware? Because it sounds like something is wrong with your router. Do you ever have problems downloading large files from the internet? I seem to remember that some Linksys routers were flaky when it came to large transfers.... I think they released some updates intended to solve the issue. You could be running into similar problems. Because the wired connections with the two Tivo's should not interfere with the wireless connection to the PC.

I have a Linksys WRT54G myself.. two wireless B Tivos, a wireless G PC, and a Vonage router plugged into one of the ports... and the only connectivity issues I get is when the B adapters on the Tivo start talking, which steps the 54G down (mixed mode) and I see my PC go from a 54MBit connection to a 32Mb.... but it has never dumped out like you mention.... last night I was transferred a file from one Tivo to the other, my wife was on the phone, and I was poking about on the PC... that's a lot of bits going to and fro across the router and it didn't blink.

FWIW: When your Tivo connects to your PC, it not using your DSL connection anyhow, so that being up or down has little affect.

MassD, your absolutely correct. My firmware needed to be upgraded. I was talking to tivo tech support and they wanted me to run a static ip address and open certain ports. So I called linksys on my flaky router and how to enable certain ports to be open. So after a 1/2 an hour with the linksys tech, they checked my firmware and had me download the upgrade. After the reboot of everything, I'm finally working flawlessly. No dropouts. Now I know to check for updates!!!!

Thanks MassD.......

MassD, your absolutely correct.

OF COURSE I AM!!! ;) heh

But I am glad to hear that the firmware upgrade took care of the drops. I try to check Linksys every so often to see if there is a new firmware package out there.... sometimes they add in some nifty new features (like Quality of Service and such) that make my life a bit easier since I rely so much on it.

OK, this is a "basic" question. I've spent 1/2 hour on the tivo site and cannot figure it out. I am considering buying a unit with the lifetime tivo basic but it appears that I need to get the tivo plus to get the $150 rebate. What are the difference in features? You would think that would be an easy thing to find on thier website.

I sure hope that the service is easier to use than the website. I couldn't even find a place to email them with my questions. Maybe it's just me, and it is there, but I couldn't find it.

I need advice on setting up a wireless system. I am very new to the idea of wireless. I want to do this to get vonage. I have 1 p.c. on broadband, 1 series 2 tivo hooked up to the phone, and one phone. What all do I need that is compatable with tivo and vonage and how do I hook it up. I would prefer just the basic equipment, nothing fancy or overly expensive.

I am a bit confused with my TiVo. My son-in-law has a setting on his TiVo (DVR thru his satellite company) where he can "skip" instead of fast forward. He has it set for 30 seconds at a time or 1 minute at a time. How do I do this?
I have a Humax with the DVD burner. I am a novice, so please keep it simple. My system is not thru cable or satellite. I think I blew it! I should have gotten my system thru cable. Although it's not available yet, where I live.

Good Afternoon,
TiVo and this forum are new to me. Some people think I'm a computer geek, other's think I'm illiterate. So, here goes a question.

First: I have a Humax DVD Recorder using TiVo service.

Second: Why would I want my TiVo wireless? I have a desktop, laptop and they are wireless. BUT what benefits would there be if my TiVo was wireless?

I was hoping to be able to record 2 programs and watch a 3rd, but I now understand I can't do this unless I have a DVR service. OR attach a VCR to the system! I was hoping to get rid of my VCR's.

Thanks

If you can and are willing to run an ethernet cable to the TiVo, do it in favor of wireless. Wireless is simply a convenient way for people who don't want to or can't run wires.

Your Humax can't record two programs at once, no matter what. But you can often hook it up so that you can at least watch live TV while the Humax is recording something.

They changed the wireless compatible list? Granted its been along time since I checked.

I thought I would be a good son and buy a Tivo2 for my parents for Christmas.
Checking the compatible list (http://customersupport.tivo.com/knowbase/root/public/tv2006.htm?) I notice only the Linksys WUSB12 is listed. I've could have sworn the WUSB11 was there, as I have 2 of them, and got one for my sisters Tivo as well.

Since I'm shopping online for these adapters...

[rant on] Why oh why can't Tivo update the boxes with updated USB drivers, as you can't find ANY of these adapters in a B&M store!! Wireless USB is mature enough now, even for Unix, for this problem to still be around. [/rant off]

Should I try to get an WUSB11 or try another adapter? I liked that the WUSB11 was connected to a cable so you could move it from behind to Tivo for better reception.

When I call TIVO support they say that since I upgraded my TIVO that's the problem. But it isn't since the phone line works fine.

This may have already been mentioned.

I had some trouble getting the Tivo box to hook up to my wireless network (D-Link dl-624, netgear wg111) and inadvertantly fixed the problem by plugging the wireless adaptor into my desktop computer, configuring the adapter with the desktop (including inputting the WEP key) and then plugging the adaptor into the Tivo. Prior to using the desktop, I tried to configure the adaptor using the tivo box and it just would not connect.

I'll have to try that. My DWL-122, which is on the approved list, works fine as long as I have no security on, but when I use WEP then it can't find a DHCP server.

Just got a second TiVo for xmas. Can't find a suitable USB adapter in the stores. I printed the list, and went to Fry's, Best Buy. Circuit City and MicroCenter and I could only find ONE [an SMC 2862W-G] on the list for sale. It did not work - not recognized, even thought reported as "Tested and Certified by TiVo." Couldn't find a ver# on it or the box.

None of the stores had older 802.11b units and they make up more than half the list. Most of the dozens that I looked at are later models [802.11g] or brands like AirLink, US Robotics, Hawking that are not represented at all. I bought 3 of these and took them home and tried them on my original 240 running 7.2.1 - none were recognized.

TIVO, YOU NEED TO TEST AND CERTIFY THE AVAILABLE UNITS!

I'll hate it but I may have to order the adapter from Tivo for $50 [more than the cost of the TiVo] and wait for it to arrive.. Why does it have to be so hard? Why can't Tivo qualify more current USB adapters? I paid $100 for HMO only to see it offered free, and now this. And I'm a Mac user with no TTG support. I'm really pissed.

I had the same problem when I started looking for a wireless adapter. Out of desperation I took all of the NetGear stock off the shelf at CompUSA and found 2 "802.11G" units that support Tivo burried in the back.

None of the stores seem to seperate the adapters that work with Tivo from those that won't - so don't be afraid to dig.

Yeah whats up with Tivo not supporting any of the wireless units on the stores shelf today? If they are just forcing people to buy the the Tivo branded unit that would SUCK. Shame on them..... I have been to 6 major stores and not a single unit on the list from any vendor. It can't be rocket science to create a driver that would allow the current version of these adapters to function. Get on it Tivo!

I have to say that I am pretty peeved to hear of these difficulties. I have just started looking at the certified adapters as I have no phone or wired ethernet near the TiVo location and reading up on this does not make me too happy. My TiVo experience has definitely started out on the wrong foot.

Slightly good news. I visited another Best Buy, and they did have the D-Link "G" adapter on the shelf. It even has a little Tivo symbol on it. Still, all that driving around was a major pain. For others, start at Best Buy, and then I would suggest Craigs List and Ebay.

I've read that people seem to have a lot of problems getting wireless adapters to work on Tivo. And I must say that I too went through the fruitless hunt for a compatible adapter at all of the local stores, to no availe.

I finally bought a Netgear WG111NA on Ebay. I plugged it into my Series2 and worked like a charm. The unit recognized the adapter, got a new "message" that network adapter was found and asked if I wanted to setup network. It saw my network (after I re-enabled SSID broadcast), I put in my WEP key and worked great.

I have since bought a 2nd tivo and am waiting on the 2nd WG111NA that I bought on ebay!

I have successfully connected my new TiVo to my wireless network, however, it still only updates once a day. I programmed a show to record on-line with 2 hours to go, but the TiVo did not get the request in time. I tried calling Customer Support but gave up when I found out I would be on hold for 30 minutes. Can anyone help me?

I bought a Humax40 TiVo dvd recorder/player last week at Best Buy. No phone line in the room where the TV is, but my house is wired for wireless thru Comcast. BB sold me $125 of stuff I didn't need and never mentioned the wireless adapter.

The past 3 days I have spent about 20 hours a day dealing with trying to find a wireless adapter that would work. I have been on the phone with TiVo twice and Humax once. ( oh yea I also had to buy another shelving unit to sit the cable box and Tivo on, so that was a several search online and in stores)

I started yesterday with the approved list of adapters in my hand. Humax told me that the one TiVo sells is not compatible with their box! I either went in person or called 5 stores. None had either the right adapter or the version numbers were not accessible. Today I looked at wireless USB adapters at different computer sites online. Still not seeing any version numbers.

Again more hours tonight reading these forums and also all the help pages on TiVo's site.

After reading all the problems with the adapters and then hearing about 4 day downloads and how confusing the entire set-up process is, I think I am going to return the TiVo and just get the DVR service from the cable company.

I really wanted TiVo but am apparently too dumb or perhaps I value my days off too much to spend anymore of them working on this endless problem. Thankfully I haven't paid for my year of service yet. The unit is still in the box, which I have opened only to measure it for the shelves!

Is there anyone I could pay to set this thing up? I am so depressed :(

I didn't have a phone line in the room where I put my 2nd unit so I ran the supplied phone line, which I believe is 25 feet, to another room where I did have a jack. I did the activation online and had the unit setup in a matter of less than an hour. The box, like my first unit, came with software version 5.XXX. I knew I would have to upgrade to 7.whatever it is to use the wireless G adapter I had coming. There is a place on Tivo website where you can sign up with your service number to have the latest software distributed to your machine.

Once I received my adapter (Netgear WG111NA) that I purchased on ebay I plugged in and it was recognized immediately.

So far I've used two of these Netgear wireless adapters, one on a 40hour Tivo branded box and the other on a 300hour Humax branded box. They setup easily. I noticed after installing the 2nd one that the network connection shown on the status screen of the Tivo units tends to fluctuate between 100% down to almost nothing, but I haven't had any issues with getting updates or with transfering shows between DVR's. The adapters both get quite warm too. I've read about this online but so far they're both working.

I got both of my wireless adapters from ebay. If you are still entertaining keeping your Tivo I'd recommend this as a possible option. There are a lot of WG111 Ver.2 adapters on ebay but I steered away from these as they were listed as incompatible on the tivo sheet. The WG111NA adapters were more difficult to find but there were some out there. Currently there is item 5851188734 which is incidentilly the same seller that I purchased one of mine from.

Thank you msu-dawg for the encouragement. I did buy a 50 ft phone cord yesterday to run it from another room for the initial setup.

I checked on eBay for adaptors.. they seem plentiful.

Two questions:

1) which is the easiest to use/install:

D-link DWL-122 USB 802.11b wireless adapter
Netgear Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter Wg111
Linksys WUSB11 Wireless USB Adapter Ver. 2.8

D-Link 802.11g USB WiFi adapter DWL G122 122 verA2 TiVo ( except aren't we supposed to buy the b model, not g model?)

2) I see pictures of cd's with the packages of adaptors-- if I have to install this, will it screw up my system already in place? I have a Netgear wireless modem gateway CG814WG, which runs my wireless from the cable company? Should I stick with a Netgear product?

Thank you in advance and thanks for listening to me whine last night :)

To address the question of B versus G, my short answer is that I couldn't find any of the B speed adapters anywhere locally. The only thing carried in my stores now is 54Mbps G and the newer 108Mps stuff that I don't know much about.

I also was not able to find any G speed adapters locally that matched Tivo's selective "OK" list.

The D-Link DWL-G122 adapters I found locally were all version B1 (as printed in fine print on the UPC sticker), not A2 so I didn't chance it. And I can't even speak for the version B1 since I haven't used one.

If buying the Netgear WG111, just be sure it isn't version 2 as these are listed as incompatible on tivo list. On the front of the box it has WG111 written and the version 2 adapters have v2 after that. The box that each of mine came in just has WG111 on the front but the UPC sticker actually says WG111NA. Not sure what the difference is but the two I bought were recognized just by pluging them into the Tivo. I never had to plug them into my computer or even used the supplied CD, just plugged them into the Tivo. BTW, my 2 units are both series 2 with service numbers that start with 540 and 590.

I have a seperate DSL modem but my network router is a Linksys WRT54G.

Other than the previously mentioned fact that both Tivo's show the network connectio signal strength as constantly fluctuating up and down, I haven't had any issues. I've transferred several programs between DVR's and to the PC using the Tivo Desktop software.

Note that your Tivo software version must be 7.2.1 or later to use a G wireless adapter. If it isn't, once you do the initial setup on the phone line you need to request the software upgrade here http://research.tivo.com/72.1priority/

After requesting software update force your Tivo to connect to Tivo service to get it. It will probably take a while on phone to download it. I had to restart my tivo after the software download. Once you have version 7.2.1 you should be able to plug in your G wireless adapter and follow the onscreen directions for setting it up. FWIW, I'm using WEP wireless security feature on my router so when I set up each Tivo I had to have my WEP key handy to input into the Tivo.

If you need to email or private message me with other questions I'd be glad to try to help.

Unfortunately I don't have an answer as to why your's didn't update. In the system information mine indicate that they are only updating once a day or so but the couple of times I've tried the online scheduling it has always worked. Just to try it again I scheduled a show at tivo.com at 9:10 CST and when I checked just now at 9:50 CST the DVR had picked it up.

Have you tried it more than the one time?

Tivo is on it. They solved a whole lot of problems by marketing their branded adaptor  .

They don't have to fool around with a dozen or so drivers and then give the profits from selling another mfg adaptor out of the great house of Tivo  .

Some exec woke up and saw away to increase the bottom line for Tivo, lets sell ur own adaptor    . We may even amke a few bucks on the unit. I ordered a approved unit from PC Connection at 1:30 am this morning and should have it by noon DHL EXPRESS FOR LESS THAN THE TIVO UNIT  .

* Series 2 40 hour Tivo DVR (bought in late December)
* Tivo USB wireless adapter.
* D-Link DI-524 B/G wireless router upgraded to firmware 1.20

The system has never been setup. I don't have access to a phone line.

Tried EVERYTHING including Tivo tech support twice, who just send me to D-Link who just sends me back to Tivo.

I've tried no security on the router, ASCII WEP, and HEX WEP. Currently it's on 64 Bit Hex WEP.

During guided setup, I've tried using DHCP and tried manually setting up the network settings. The SSID is always choosable, but once it gets to the end I get one of three errors:

* Network adapter has not been set up for use with the DVR
* DHCP server can not be found.
* Gateway (or router, can't remember) can not be found.

I believe these are errors N02, N08, and N09.

The router doesn't have a feature to straightforwardly disable the firewall, but I've tried essentially opening all ports and IPs to the world, and also setting the DMZ host to the IP address chosen for the Tivo. No help.

Any ideas before I call Tivo to send all this crap back?

Ok, so I have read through this entire thread and other threads but cant find my answer. I have a Philips DSR708 series 2 with service number 301xxxx. I did the initial setup and update from a friends house and now am at version 6.2.01.
I also have a netgear WGR614 wireless router attached to my cable modem. I was thinking of getting either the netgear ma111 or WG111NA for the adapter. I looked at all the compatibilty lists but couldnt find my service number anywhere. I am only looking at doing this for updates as I have no land line and dont want one. Will these adapters work?

Everything I have read indicates that you have to have the 7.2.1 version software to use any of the listed G speed wireless adapters. Is your unit a stand-alone Tivo or a DVD recorder Tivo? Did you use the link I posted previously for requesting the latest software from Tivo.com?

MSU-DAWG-It is a stand alone Tivo. I was told by the experts at DirecTv that my particular units USB are not active and wont be because Tivo didnt license this to them. I thought I had the latest update. Wouldnt that have happened when I did the initial setup/update during guide set up? Will one of the B speed work? I was also looking at the Linksys Wusb11 Ver 2.8.

EdE,

If I interpreted your response correctly, you have a DirecTV Tivo unit? From what I remember, I don't think those can be used with the wireless adapter. And if the USB ports are not active then there isn't any way that I know of to hook up to a wireless (or wired) network.

sorry I don't have anything better I can tell you.

I dont know if I believe the people at DirecTv though.
I got the unit from them (actually from a friend that works there). It is a Philips unit but it has the DirecTv logo in one corner and the Tivo logo in the bottom corner. It is both the receiver and recorder, DVR I guess is how it is referred to.
I just want to be able to use the Net to update it and programming without having to use a phone line. And I cant see spending the extra $30/month just for updates and PPV ability. Or should I see about getting a different model? If so, what do you suggest?

I've just spent the last two hours scouring six local electronics stores for compatible wireless adapters for my new TIVO unit. Nothing to be found--it seems that almost all of the adapters on TIVO's approved list are well out-of-date. I went to the TIVO site to order their branded wireless adapter and have discovered that (incredibly) they are out of it and won't be shipping new orders until March. Reading this thread, I learn that there may be some adapters on ebay, but when I go there I discover that TIVO adapters are selling for more than $100! The other possibilities are sold (as are all things on ebay) as is, so if they don't work, I don't have any return options.

Wasted time, unavailable products, incompatibility issues.... There is something very, very wrong with this picture. I'd like to support TIVO, but I'm ready to box up my unit and send it back. I can get a DVR from my cable company for less money that's guaranteed to be compatible with my system and that doesn't force me to chase around town looking for out-of-date equipment.

If someone can direct me to a reliable source for equipment for connecting my TIVO DVR to a home wireless network, I'm all ears (please not ebay). Otherwise, I'm taking the easy route, much as I'd prefer not to.

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer.

I feel your pain but unfortunately I can't give you any suggestions that you haven't already read about. I'm sure you can find any number of online retailers who can sell you one of the "approved" adapters from TiVo's list but whether or not they're reputable places to shop from.....??? I'd rather take my chances with a reputable ebay seller. I had noticed that TiVo branded adapters were selling way high on ebay. I didn't understand why until I saw that Tivo.com was sold out until March. I guess a lot of other frustrated tivoers are hoping that TiVo's adapter will solve their problems. My Netgear WG111NA adapters work with my Series 2 Tivos (TCD540040) but they do seem to have reception problems (to my Linksys router). Every once in a while I'll have to unplug and replug one to reset it because it loses connection.

The other evening I started transfer (between DVR's) on 6 shows. When I got up in the morning only 2 minutes of the first show had transferred. ARRRGGG!! I determined which DVR was showing no connection to network, unplugged and replugged it, and the transfers restarted and had finished by the time I got home from work. It seems to just kind of be a hit and miss thing.

I'm thinking of trying the Linksys B adapter that is listed on Tivo's site and will probably get it from "that auction site". ;)

Sorry I couldn't help, hope you find a resolution.

I just hooked up a series 2Tivo. I also installed a Linksys Wireless-G broadband router (WRT54G) to my computer. I need detailed directions on how to connect the Tivo through the router. Is it possible to be truly "wireless" or is there still going to be a wire between the Tivo and router?
im in the same boat brother i have comcast i have both that router and BEFCMU10 modem and now i'm finding out that i have to go and buy ANOTHER router damn i should have joined this sooner to find out all the dirt but i still love watching my live shows in rewind. but it sucks that you can't change the channel and then rewind it the full hour and watch that that'd be nice though. You have to buy an adapter to plug in to the Tivo unit. but if you have a laptop or a really close by computer (Desktop) you can use a USB to connect the two (computer and tivo box) together and upload to ur laptop. that's what i've found out so far.

Edit: Also to the person 3 threads above me ever tried amazon? i did most of my shopping there. i refuse to use ebay anymore its less reliable and i trust amazon. noone in my family works there or its distributers i'm just going on what i've dealt with from amazon.

I have a Linksys wireless G router and this item # N82E16833124103
from newegg worked fine with my Tivo Series2 (just got it yesterday)

You need to make sure the router is in dual mode (supports both B and G ). I don't use WEP, but have MAC address filters enabled. You can get the mac address from the Tivo Setup screen and then configure the router to allow that address (if you don't use mac address filters or use exclusion lists, then it shoulddn't be an issue.)

I hope there is a special place in hell for the software developers of TIVO Series II wireless connection. Here's the deal, I bought the stupid TiVo approved wireless adaptor after trying many of the so-called approved adaptors. I test the Tivo connection to my network using TiVo network connecting software, it passes. I can see the TiVO recorder on my network using a little program called Network Magic so I know it's hooked up to my network. I now attempt to connect and download my programming info. Fails during negoiating. Ahh! What the ...? Calling TiVo tech support is pointless. So I run a 100' cable through my house to my D-Mark once a week so I can hook up to my last POTS. This is all very weird because I had a wireless connection that worked perfectly until version 7.2 software came along. If only there was a better solution DVR than TiVo I'd buy it.

My wireless network died as well. It was working fine for months, and the other day it just stopped. My router can see the Tivo, but the Tivo can't see the network. Nothing about my setup has changed. I did notice that the network search screen disappeared after the last update. I used to get a laugh at other peoples network names. If anyone figures out a fix for the missing network problem please post it. For now, I have gone back to the "long phone line manually connected at night" routine.

You said that your router can see the Tivo but did not elaborate on exactly what you meant. I've noticed before that on my Linksys router under the list of devices that are on the network (where it shows my computer, printer, and 2 tivos) it will continue to show a device for some amount of time until it "refreshes" the network.

Did you try typing the IP address of the tivo into a web browser to see if the welcome screen comes up? And have you already tried the simple first step of cycling power on both the router and the tivo to see if they would reconnect?

Just some thoughts

I have re-installed the adapter a couple of times, and have restarted both the router and the Tivo at least five times each. The router can see the Tivo (MAC address) and the adapter is showing the linked light. How do I find the IP address of the Tivo box? I've never tried that before.

On my Linksys router it's under the Status tab, Local-Network subtab, there is a button that says DHCP Clients Table. This will report the devices on the network along with the IP address they have assigned to them.

You should also be able to see IP address of the Tivo box on its Phone&Network setup screen. Mine shows up in the upper right hand corner, just above the MAC address of the wireless adapter.

I need help setting up my network. I have had my toshiba tivo for about a year and have moved several times with it. I know my adapter works because it has worked in the past (it's a 122). My router works with my adapter but my tivo still says that it cannot recognize my adapter. I went to a friends to borrow their phone line but only used it for the guided setup. Not the second data update, is that a huge deal? Also my friend lives one zipcode over (I know!) Is the s/w reload w/ standard "out of the box" Tivo or enhanced? I just don't see the option to download. I'm only asking because I went thru every wireless adapter that Best Buy and Office Max carry today - none work. Called support they suggested the one at the Tivo site. Well, it's double the cost - and they are out of stock with no estimate when they will restock.

At both Office Max and Best Buy we compared the Tivo listed adapters with their inventory - they don't and won't carry any of them.

Any help is good help...tx

I have been having issues trying to get my tivo to recognize my wireless network (using a DI-624 router and DWL-122 network adapter) and I found many similar problems and questions here but not many solutions so I wanted to post what worked for me.

I had similar issues to others here in that tivo could see the SSID but claimed not to find the network. Also frustrating is that I could see other networks (live in a large condo building) and even connect to some of them, but not my own (yes I could use someone else's technically, but then what did I buy this equipment for and I want the added functionality).

In short, all I did was lower the transfer rate on the router ("TX" in the Advanced>Performance tab) to 2 Mbps. This allowed Tivo to recognize the network. Made a connection and then raised the transfer to 11Mbps. And now it works great. This may not solve all problems, but it might help a few people.

After 5 days of struggling, I saw this post, and just to let everyone know, this solution worked for me. I am using a DI-624 router and a DWL-122 wireless adapter, and the TiVo simply wouldn't find the network until I changed the transfer rate. Thanks!

I'm new here and I'm frustrated. I've had one tivo box connected to my wireless network- netgear router via a MA111 netgear adapter for over a year w/no problems. A month ago I added a 2nd Tivo, this one a Humax recorder, and connected it using the same adapter. I've switched back and forth a few times. Today I connected a new netgear WG111-(yes, compat)- so I wouldn't have to switch- and so I could do the peer to peer thing- but the new one wouldn't connect. After spending 2 hours with a nice guy at Tivo support, the new one finally works on the older box, but now the older adapter connected to the new machine gets the "gateway not found" message. So now my router is to blame, says the nice guy. I've never had an issue and use many diffferent wireless devices. Any help would be so appreciated!

On The Old Adapter Tivo, Pull The Power Out Of That Tivo And The Adapter. Then Plug The Tivo Back In, Then The Adapter, Tivo Central Comes Up Go To Network Setup, Pick Network, Enter Pass If Any, Say Auto From Dhcp, Say No, Then Adapter Is Set Up. Or If You Get Error Post Back What Is Was. If Good, Make Test Connection, If Good, Make Connection To Tivo Service.

I had a D-Link usb wireless adapter, so I tried it -- no luck... it wasn't supported. I just got my TiVo adapter and it was simple to set up. The only headache was entering the hex wep key! Then I could immediately transfer pictures and music from the PC.
I have one problem though. The "Now Playing List" says there is nothing to transfer. Also, my TiVo settings say the media access key is temporarily unavailable. I'm guessing their related. This is my 1st TiVo and I'm anxious to get it all set up. Any ideas?

The Tivo can access and update as needed, and using Tivo ToGo can transfer(painstakingly slow) from the Tivo using the Linksys WRT54GX Router and the Microsoft USB Adapter MN-510.

I'd like to be able to access the DVR direct hoping to be able to transfer video faster.

I looked the the Status tab and the Tivo is there at .102, but does not appear anywhere on the PC locations such as My Computer ot Network Computers.

I've turned off the Norton Security(I disabled Windows firewall), but still no Tivo.

I have looked for it from other computers on the newtwork, but get the same results.

What am I/did I do wrong?

TIA!

Any chance of Tivo making a change to their software to support the NetGear WG111T any time soon?

Just wanted to tell you that in reading your post I found that the internet connectors I have been ueing for these last few years are no longer compatable with 7.2. I am hoping this is the reason for my random rebooting. Outdated connectors!
Thanks for the tip to review list, even though they have been working all this time.

Hi Ho off to the store I go.

Thanks

anyone have any luck with a Linksys WRT54GC 802.11g router (compact version of the WRT54G) with the NetGear WG111NA adapter? I've seen some guys rave about the WG111NA --my TiVo recognized it immediately, set it up, said it was working great. So I tested the connection and it fails to find the network. Everything seems to be solid--the router knows its there, but I can't connect...

thanks.

I'm curious if you got an answer on this. I bought the WG111NA (s/n starting with 130). My Tivo starts with 540...so according the compatibility list it should work. After I go through entering my SSID and WEP, it still can't find my network. I'm not sure which software version my Tivo has (mine was bought in 12/05 but never used). From what I have seen, it looks like I may need to borrow a friends landline so that I can get the initial set-up done...and ensure that I have 7.2.2. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Update: It took an update for my firmware (with some additional tweeking afterwards) to get everything in order. I'm up and working now.

Assuming your dvr is hooked up correctly, this linksys page should be full proof (and fool proof) at getting your network up and running, secure, and your dvr should be able to see it, assuming you checked the list of compatible adapters and that yours matches that..

use this address for linksys setup:

http://linksysfix.com/check/filter/index2.htm?CallerID=Sp

before you do this you do need to be sure your software is updated.. to check the version you have you can go into tivo central/messages and settings/settings/account & system info/system info

on this page you will find a variety of info including the most recent software version

once configured correctly, guided setup should walk you through easily to find your own network and complete the setup

after this you can view your network and its signal strength by opening messages and settings/settings/phone & network

in there you can test your network connection and also connect to tivo to download any updates avail (plus a troubleshooting link for networks)

good luck

I recently moved my old series 2 80 hr unit to another room to make space for my new DT unit in my den. When I went to re-hook up the old unit in the bedroom with the same wireless adapter and cables, all of a sudden it can't hold a network connection for more than a few minutes when it even finds the server. Ideas?? Help!!!!

It seems to be several months since this particular question was asked, so in case things might have changed since then, I'll ask...

I have a Phillips DSR 708, and am looking to get rid of my land based phone line. Am I able to use the Tivo Wireless Network Adapter along with my internet connection to accomplish this???

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I have no where to turn. It feels like the walls are closing in. I need to get out more . This is what I have and what I need to do. I have the Toshiba SD-H400 with the Tivo basic service alreadyh built in (first 3 numbers are 264 of the service number). I have to software version 7.3. I am trying to connect to my wireless network to dump the phone line. I have the Hawking HWU54G. It is a "g" adapter and I am worried that is my problem. The USB is working and I have tried just about everything, It just won't recognize the adapter. Do I need a different adapter? Any advice out there? Thanks.

The only Hawking adapter I see on:

http://customersupport.tivo.com/LaunchContent.aspx?cid=56cc9bdc-b292-448e-a6c3-2e55fc03c89f&anchor=undefined&anchor=undefined&anchor=undefined&anchor=undefined

is the WU250, so yeah, you most likely need a new adapter. Check the list on the above URL. The TiVo adapter at the top is a bit expensive, but works well.

OK, I've tried spending the last hour or so reading all the posts and still didn't find a recent answer to my question. I'm not a techie, so maybe it's in front of me and I'm not seeing it. I have a Linksys WRT54G router and an in-home network for my 3 computers. They all work fine. A couple of months ago, I bought the TiVo wireless adapter and it didn't work. Believe Tivo said the reason was it only supports WEP security, but they're working on upgrading to WPA (for several years??!!). Can't find the Tivo suggested Linksys WUSB 12 adapter, only the WUSB 54 (I believe). I'm fairly simple minded if not simple. Can you guys walk me through an easy answer that will guarantee that I keep the WPA2 security I now have on my network and still allow both (soon to be 3) Tivos to work wirelessly?

The current TiVo software does not support WPA, so in order to use it you'd have to couple a wired adapter with a wireless bridge. However, the following support document on tivo.com mentions that WPA will be available with TiVo software 8.1 (which to my knowledge has yet to be released):

http://customersupport.tivo.com/LaunchContent.aspx?cid=8e566f54-a3ce-4b0c-9d8d-796e2052076b

So, you might not have too long to wait. More discussion on WPA can be found here:

Hello Stephen,
I have seen a post on a Tivo forum from you and thought maybe you can help. I just took my chances by ordering a wireless adapter online without knowing the version type due to not knowing the type until the box is opened up. It is a DLInk DWL-G120 and unfortunately, it turns out to be version B1. Is there any way to get this to work? I have a Tivo Software version of 7.3 and a service number beginning with 240. Any thoughts? Do I have to return this item for sure? Thank you.

I just got my software S2 (540) upgraded to 8.1 and immediately changed my security mode to WPA with a Tivo Wireless Adapter. Works like a charm. In fact the change on the Tivo was earier than the PCs. Changed the password to the WPA shared key and Tivo connected. Never ask for WEP or WPA. With the PC you must specify WPA, etc.

I am using a WGA54G to connect with my Tivo box to my Wireless router.

I needed to use a PC to setup the device with WEP key and info, then just
plugged an ethernet cable into my series2.

Working great for me.

My screen has been freezing, lost shows, and now I can't access any thing on my TIVO. TIVO help said to clean and delete, so I did. Now, I can't get past the Getting Started Menu.
I recently switched to Comcast VOIP for phone service, and now my TIVO won't recognize the wireless info transfer. Comcast said there is a difference in the frequencies, directional versus static? Any suggestions on how to bypass or input the proper info so that I can get on with my TIVO life?

I also upgraded to WPA a few days ago.

I have both my computer and my TiVo connected to my wireless network without issues, however, I'm having a very difficult time getting them both to see each other. I constantly need to re-boot both so that the connection is re-established between the two.

It's not that they lose network connection, they both remain connected to the net, it's just that they lose visibility of each other.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I'm in the same boat, except that I do not have WPA installed in my wireless. I've also seen a significant slowdown in transferring programs from one Tivo to another. I aborted a transfer after 2 hours when only 20 minutes were transferred.

I've been using NetGear MA111 for over a year without issue. Has there been some issues brought about by the Fall Update? I've seen the advertising for the new Tivo Branded USB Network adaptors; any chance the service updates 'broke' non-Tivo branded adapters?

TIA,

I actually have the TiVo Wireless adapter.

I was totaly fine with my network on WEP until I upgraded to 8.1 and installed the TiVo adapter for the sake of WPA.

Now I can't make my pc see my TiVo or viceversa even though they both are connected and online.

Happy holidays!

Just a piece of information for all those having "unreliable" operation over a wireless network. I just set up a Linksys WRT54GL router, which was quite easy. But I had problems transferring programs between Tivos or to my PC. I finally broke down and bought the "high gain" antennas for the LInksys ($37 at Newegg). Rather expensive shot in the dark but boy what a difference. My nearest Tivo is now 100% signal all the time and the further Tivo in the basement is hovering around 70%. Before it would run at around 50% but dip down to below 20% on occasion. Those dips were killing my transfers. Now it all works just fine. So signal strength really matters.

I would like to connect my tivo series2 DT to my existing home wireless network, but I'm not sure what would be compatible with my equipment. I have looked at the compatible adapters list at tivo.com, but would the adapter need to be compatilble with anything besides the tivo? For example, does it make any difference if I have a Mac or PC? (I have a Mac) Does it matter what kind of router I have? (Actiontec) I don't have any other tivos that would need to be on the network.

Thanks for any tips! I would also love to know where to get the adapters for a good price. (eBay?)

It doesn't really matter what type of computer or router you have, but I'd recommend going with the TiVo adapter for simplicity's sake... It's guaranteed to have no compatibility issues with the TiVo itself. You can shop around, but TiVo sells it directly as well:

Thanks, Drew! I think you're right--I looked at eBay and I wouldn't save much buying it there, and God knows what would or wouldn't work! So I went ahead and placed the order tonight for my very first tivo box and the wireless adapter at Tivo Community Store. :)

At the beginning of the year, I had 4 Series 2 TiVos all connected to my network with Linksys WUSB11 adapters and life was good. One of my series 2s died a horrible death signaling the adoption of a Series 3. I took my WUSB11 from the dead TiVo and plugged it in, life is now High Def Good. Fast forward to last month. I bought an HDTivo for the bargain basement price of $219, shutdown my bedroom TiVo, plugged in the WUSB11 into the HDTiVo and BLOOP. This USB device is not supported. Any ideas?

Indeed, according to:

http://tivosupport2.instancy.com/TiVoCollection/56cc9bdc-b292-448e-a6c3-2e55fc03c89f/ins_Content.html

only the TiVo adapter is officially supported on S3's and THD's. I believe that while adapters like the WUSB11 do technically work with the S3, TiVo decided to start fresh with the THD, and only the TiVo adapter works. The TiVo adapter's model number is AG0100, and the best price I know of at the moment is $38.88 after shipping:

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if this setup will work. Do you have the same hardware?
Windows XP SP2
Tivo Series 2(not dual tuner)
Buffalo Technology Wireless-G 125 router and access point (I've never used it. I don't have anything wireless. But had to buy it because it was such a hot deal).
My Essential G USB Adapter. I wasn't allowed to post links.

OfficeMax will have the USB Adapter on sale for $20 on Black Friday. I'm willing to spend $20, but not anymore. I thought the Tivo had an ethernet connection. Does anyone have this setup? Or should I just hook up the phone line once a week?

Thanks,
