I encourage people to post the models of their cable/satellite boxes (more technically called set top boxes) and the codes they have found to work, along with any special notes. Information about boxes for which no codes work well is also useful so that TiVo users can try to avoid them.

Boxes are considered compatible if, with proper setup, they can achieve a reliability of at most a missed channel change once every few months. With the notable exception of the DCT2000 series boxes, most compatible boxes actually perform much better than that minimum (even using IR), with achievable error rates of a few times a year down to less than one missed channel change per year. Warning language is included in entries for boxes which cannot achieve these reliability rates (even for boxes that perform channel changes correctly 90–95% of the time).

To find out your current IR code, wait until your TiVo is not recording. Then for cable boxes, go to Messages & Setup → Cable/Satellite Box → Cable Box Setup and then forward through all the screens. The procedure for satellite boxes is similar.

First, look for the box type (cable box or satellite box) and manufacturer name to see if general notes exist for that manufacturer's boxes. These general notes are not repeated in each box's entry in order to keep the size of this list somewhat reasonable.

Then, look for a specific entry for that model of box. Each model name is followed by a recommended IR code or serial control configuration and then any special notes for that box. Many words are linked to further info. (Most links use the same color as the surrounding text to improve readability.) Again, as noted in the prior paragraph, general notes for the manufacturer are not duplicated for every box, so also look for any general notes for the manufacturer and box type.

Note: TiVo DVRs are not capable of controlling other TiVo DVRs via IR.

Links to further info or credits look like this. (http://www.web-i18n.net/web-i18n/profile) At the bottom, some useful links to info related to IR and serial control are provided.

‼ Attempting to connect the IR port from a cable/satellite box to a TiVo DVR's IR port is dangerous!. Many set cable/satellite boxes have high voltage on their IR ports, so connecting a TiVo DVR to the cable/satellite box's IR port can damage both the TiVo DVR and the cable/satellite box. Such connections almost never work anyways since, while a number of set top boxes have IR output ports (for controlling a VCR), almost none have IR input ports.

A complication in choosing a good IR code is that, at least for one box, different codes work for different firmware. So, a box that had a working IR code may suddenly stop working after a firmware change is sent by the cable/satellite company, causing TiVo problems until a new IR code is entered.

TiVo's article “How Do I Change Channels Using IR Control? (http://customersupport.tivo.com/tivoknowbase/root/public/tv1022.htm)” lists the sequence of menu items for changing the IR code.

i3 micro technology Mood Box (Myrio): 10073 Jerrold:

Jerrold Electronics was bought by General Instrument, which was in turn bought by Motorola. See the Motorola entries for Jerrold cable boxes.

Motorola CFT/DCT Series Cable Boxes:

Motorola (GI, Jerrold, Clearview) box models can be hard to identify. Motorola has a list of their boxes with pictures (http://broadband.motorola.com/mso/product_information/all_products.html). (Unfortunately, that site is down at the moment. In the meantime, try Motorola's Product Catalog (http://broadband.motorola.com/catalog/group_by_category.asp).) The model number should also be in the manual cable companies should supply with the box and can sometimes be found on the bottom of the box.

For older boxes, if the specific Motorola codes below do not work, also try GI, Jerrold, and Clearview codes.

Many older DCT models have a problem with dropping the first digit. Labonte18 (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=3289&.=.) explains the technical cause of the problem in this post (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=345008&.=.#post345008). First, try using an IR tent/fort. If (and only if) still losing the first digit, this FAQ entry (http://www.tivofaq.com/Bugs.html#3digit) might help somewhat.

For the DCT6200, DCT2000, and possibly other models, power off then press Select to see the diagnostic screen (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1597316&.=.#post1597316).

lajohn27 (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=64646&.=.) writes that some boxes have an AutoTune setting (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1816627&.=.#post1816627). If AutoTune is off/on, then the Enter Key is/isn't required to change channels.

If 6's don't work, try (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1737579&.=.#post1737579) 10040-Fast. The TiVo article “I Am Unable to Change to a Channel with the Number 6 in It (http://customersupport.tivo.com/tivoknowbase/root/public/tv1552.htm)” has detailed instructions.

Motorola DCT1700, DCT1800:

These boxes may not work well (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1421486&.=.#post1421486) even though they are based on the DCT2000 series.

One poster appears to report (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1700187&.=.#post1700187) the box works and can have a serial port, but according to TiVo some boxes have a sound issue.

Motorola DCP501: See DCT2000 series

Try 00093-Fast (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=3047980&.=.#post3047980).

Motorola DCT2000 series (http://broadband.motorola.com/catalog/productdetail.asp?ProductID=226) (includes DCT2224 and DCT2244): first, try serial or 10006-Medium

For Series2 TiVo DVRs, first, try using serial if the cable company has enabled it following the TiVo's article “Changing Channels on a DCT2000 Series Cable Box Using the Serial Control Cable (http://customersupport.tivo.com/tivoknowbase/root/public/tv031120.htm)”. Although serial might not be any more reliable than optimally configured IR, serial is very easy to setup. In contrast, achieving the best possible IR configuration is not easy with these particular boxes.

For Series1 TiVo DVRs, serial control is not officially supported. Those willing to modify their TiVo software can enable serial control by applying the serial-enabling hack described in the “HOWTO: Enabling serial control of some brands of digital cable boxes... (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&threadid=62212&.=.)” thread. Again, the cable company must have enabled the serial port on the cable box.

However, some people have erratic channel changing behavior using serial (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&threadid=121526&.=.) (changes to correct channel, then changes again). dcorsi (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=38289&.=.) says to block the cable box from receiving IR (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1617716&.=.#post1617716) since otherwise the box can still receive and be confused by stray IR. The poster used electrical tape, but foil blocks even more IR than electrical tape. Others have reported channel up/down getting out of sync, for which the recommendation (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1412850&.=.#post1412850) is to power-cycle the cable box with the serial cable disconnected. Also, ylla (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=32116&.=.) reported (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1421219&.=.#post1421219) that problems with the cable signal can cause digits to be dropped during channel changing problems when using serial. tomtul2 (http://forums.tivo.com/pe/profile/publicprofile.jsp?memberID=10102519) reported (http://forums.tivo.com/pe/forums/displaypost.jsp?postID=10102134) that unplugging both the cable box and TiVo for fifteen seconds can help when TiVo is sending incomplete channel changes via serial.

If the cable company has not enabled serial control, according to sibble-comp (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=60614&.=.), Motorola technical support says (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1512471&.=.#post1512471) the cable company needs to send the “‘app_if enable’ command from their billing software” to the cable box. Then the cable company needs to reset the box.

IR is not as reliable with this series of cable boxes as with others due to their underpowered CPUs; but with very careful setup, many people only miss a channel change every few months, which is comparable to the error rate over serial. jeffw_00 (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=1350&.=.) recommends (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1458214&.=.#post1458214) using Enter Key: No because, with IR already being unreliable, the Enter key can cause missed channel changes when already on the target channel. pauly666 (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=10215&.=.) explained a number of old, technical details (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=469947&.=.#post469947) about these boxes, including why some need Enter Key: Yes while others don't and why some need 3 digits while others don't.

For IR, first try 00093-Fast.

If losing the first digit, see the general Motorola notes above. Note: The DCT2224 is less affected by this problem (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=345008&.=.#post345008) than the DCT2244.

Building an IR tent/fort can help improve IR reliability greatly with these boxes, even if not experiencing the dropped first digit problem.

6's in channel changes may stop working after a cable box firmware update. In this case, switch to 10006-Medium. The TiVo article “I Am Unable to Change to a Channel with the Number 6 in It (http://customersupport.tivo.com/tivoknowbase/root/public/tv1552.htm)” has detailed instructions.

With the newer firmware, Syzygy (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=1158&.=.) recommends (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1371190&.=.#post1371190) 10006-Slow, 3 digit, and Enter Key: No. Others have reported (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1241336&.=.#post1241336) success with Xantech IR emitters (see links under “Useful Info Related to IR and Serial Control” below) and 10042-Slow. However, smark (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=35487&.=.), from Comcast, and jeffw_00 (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=1350&.=.) strongly warn (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1458209&.=.#post1458209) against using Slow because Slow can cause the box to reset (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1458206&.=.#post1458206).

Eripper (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=56121&.=.) warns the IR port is not the remote LED light nor near it (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1432817&.=.#post1432817), writing “If you are looking at the face of your Motorola cable box[,] it is about an inch to the right of where [the] power light is. If you hold it up [to] the light you can see the IR port behind the tinted glass.”

thaspot (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=58714&.=.) suggests it may help to set the cable box to show only the channel and not the clock (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1495200&.=.#post1495200).

bicker (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=60449&.=.) reports that some boxes change channels much more reliably than others of the same model. So, it is worthwhile to try exchanging boxes that have particular problems changing channels (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1553649&.=.#post1553649). Here (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1600155&.=.#post1600155)'s another post from bicker about the varying reliability of four DCT2000 series boxes.

An on-line DCT2000 manual (http://www.midcocomm.com/editable_content/guides_and_forms/DCTguide.pdf) is available.

According to Jeff Baumgartner, Assistant Editor of CED, “the DCT-2000 originally was intended to be a short-lived, migratory pit stop on the way to the more powerful DCT-5000. But massive integration issues with third-party software suppliers, coupled with sluggish movement in the iTV sector, all but buried the intial version of the 5000. Todays, with as many as 25 million units deployed, the DCT-2000 has evolved into a mainstay rather than its original purpose as a stopgap.”

Motorola DCT2500 series (http://broadband.motorola.com/catalog/productdetail.asp?ProductID=185) (includes DCT2524): use serial

Rwood (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=47119&.=.) writes, “It works great using the serial port (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=2137546&.=.#post2137546)”, but also see this thread (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&threadid=176314&.=.).

Motorola DCT5100:

NowPlaying (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=18915&.=.) recommends (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1346223&.=.#post1346223) 10006-Medium, 3 digit, and Enter Key: Yes.

opchiasm (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=52485&.=.) recommends (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1359268&.=.#post1359268) 10042-Fast, 3 digit, and Enter Key: No.

mdscott (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=26291&.=.) recommends (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1458364&.=.#post1458364) 10006-Fast and Enter Key: Yes with the IR blaster aligned (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1459602&.=.#post1459602) “just a bit to the inside of the left edge of the plastic on the front of the 5100.”

Mike20878 (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=4004&.=.) writes (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1498887&.=.#post1498887) that 10042-Slow and Enter Key: Yes “does not produce a black screen on channel changes”.

Syzygy (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=1158&.=.) recommends (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1371190&.=.#post1371190) 10006-Slow, 3 digit, and Enter Key: No.

hathaway65 (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=70289&.=.) reports (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&threadid=166223&.=.) that the same or similar flickering and/or color problems as have been commonly reported for the DCT6200 below also affect a small number of DCT5100's and that the DCT6200 workaround also works for DCT5100's. See the DCT6200 section below for more details.

As indicated by the flickering issue a small number of DCT5100 owners have experienced, progressive output may work better than interlaced with certain boxes.

Motorola DCT6200 series:

The DCT6200's are replacements for the DCT5100's.

Note: If you have problems with video issues (flickering and/or incorrect colors across the top two-thirds of the picture), that can be caused by the cable company (incorrectly) loading DCT5100 software on a DCT6200 box. For more info, see Motorola's explanation (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1716308&.=.#post1716308) and this possible workaround (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1761318&.=.#post1761318) from ToddLassila (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=69264&.=.). To be extra safe, unplug the cable box for a minute rather than just turning it off as described in that procedure.

As indicated by the flickering issue many DCT6200 owners have experienced, progressive output may work better than interlaced with certain boxes. Dennis Wilkinson (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=6660&.=.) writes (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1816570&.=.#post1816570) that this setting is probably just working around a cable box bug and not truly causing it to emit progressive output over S-Video.

A number of non-TiVo owners have reported that firmware revision 7.07 fixes the flicker (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=3540771#post3540771) problem.

Motorola DCT6208 DVR: 00093 (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=2137589&.=.#post2137589)-Fast, Enter Key: No

Rumored to be capable of recording 7–10 hours of HD programming and/or 30 hours of SD programming.

Motorola DCT6408 DVR:

The DCT6408 is a dual tuner DCT6208.

Motorola DSR/RG Series Cable Boxes:

classicsat (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=69669&.=.) contributed some great info on DSR and RG series cable boxes (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=2136704&.=.#post2136704).

Some owner's might also have to reset the cable box's IR address to 000 using this procedure (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1587527&.=.#post1587527) or this one (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=2139190&.=.#post2139190).

The notes for the DSR305/DSR410/DSR421CNM below probably apply to all DSR series boxes. classicsat writes (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=2139190&.=.#post2139190), “they are all derivates of each other, and run basically the same software.”

However, another owner reports (http://forums.tivo.com/pe/forums/displaypost.jsp?postID=10103647) an error rate of ~25%.

Yet another poster reports (http://forums.tivo.com/pe/forums/displaypost.jsp?postID=10103775) the box works well at slow or medium IR speed if using stick-on style IR emitters. (See links under “Useful Info Related to IR and Serial Control” below.) The IR sensor is “on the right of the display cover (http://forums.tivo.com/pe/forums/displaypost.jsp?postID=10104060)”.

As dlatner (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=65702&.=.) reported (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1634532&.=.#post1634532), the warning that Scientific Atlanta boxes “will not operate if the signal is too strong” applies to these boxes, too.

Pioneer Voyager DVR series: unknown

Includes the Voyager 4000 HD-DVR.

Unknown at this time. Probably the same as the Scientific Explorer 8000 series and Pace Micro DVR series codes, which are also unknown. Possibly the codes are the same as for Sky+ boxes, but it is unknown if those UK TiVo IR codes (20017 and 20010) are available for the U.S. models.

Quanta QCR2221: 10042-Medium

See RCN's tips (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=2263936&.=.#post2263936) that andymack (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=77568&.=.) kindly posted.

Additionally, preliminary indications are that it's a less reliable version of the DCT2000 series with custom firmware. As such, the tips in the general Motorola notes and DCT2000 series entry above should help with this box, too.

Finally, see RCN/Quanta (http://forums.tivo.com/pe/action/forums/displaysinglethread?rootPostID=10106182) thread for some old info.

RCA/Thomson DSL1500: RCA 10072-Fast (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&threadid=165886&.=.) Scientific Atlanta Cable Boxes:

An Audioplex technical bulletin (http://www.audioplex.com/technical/TECH001.pdf) warns that Scientific Atlanta boxes “are very sensitive to IR signal strengths and will not operate if the signal is too strong. Installers have found that rather than placing an individual emitter directly over the Scientific Atlanta IR sensor, it works better if the unit receives signals … from the reflected signal of emitters placed on nearby components within the cabinet.”

To see the diagnostics pages on Scientific Atlanta Explorer boxes, press and hold the button in the center of the channel/volume buttons on the cable box until the envelope lights. Press the INFO button on the remote. The diagnostics pages contain signal quality info and other goodies that might be useful to know.

Some Scientific Explorer boxes now have the option to turn on when they sense a channel change. If you have such a box, you should enable this option (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=2432345&.=.#post2432345).

Scientific Atlanta (http://www.sciatl.com/products/consumers/) Explorer 2000, 2100, 2200, 3000, 3100, 3100HD, 3250, 4200: 00018-Fast, 3 digit, and Enter Key: No

The foreign supplier of Scientific Atlanta's 3100HD, 3250, and 4200 boxes has tuned them to 37.8KHz instead of the ~57KHz used by most Scientific Atlanta boxes. It is unknown if foreign-supplied Scientific Atlanta boxes are compatible with TiVo (possibly they use the 00995 UK code, which might not be available to U.S. TiVos). Fortunately, such boxes from Scientific Atlanta's foreign supplier are uncommon in the U.S.

At least one cable provider has recently added a single four digit channel, which does not need to be tuned by the TiVo DVR. In this case, use 00018-Fast, 3 digit, and Enter Key: Yes.

A while back, cable provider Brighthouse in Florida started to use 4-digit channels (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1555660&.=.#post1555660) (but may have backed out (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1560657&.=.#post1560657)). So long as the first digit is a zero, TiVo is still compatible, but the channel changing is very slow. innocentfreak (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=5470&.=.) reports (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1557955&.=.#post1557955) 00049-Fast works. TiVo is now recommending (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1559548&.=.#post1559548) this code, too.

Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 and 3000 series, Pioneer Voyager series, and Pace boxes all run the PowerTV OS and middleware, which are capable of processing HTTP, HTML, and Java.

Some Scientific Explorer boxes now have the option to turn on when they sense a channel change. If you have such a box, you should enable this option (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=2432345&.=.#post2432345).

Scientific Atlanta (http://www.sciatl.com/consumers/) Explorer 3250HD: ‼ 00018-Fast, 3 digit, and Enter Key: No

Some areas use 00049-Fast instead of 00018-Fast.

See the notes immediately above for the other Explorer models. There are reports (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1834979&.=.#post1834979) that channel changing with the 3250HD is less reliable than with the other Explorer models, however.

Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 series: compatible

According to markandjenn (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=56140&.=.), the SA8000 is compatible. (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=2104965&.=.#post2104965) ellinj (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=18094&.=.) warns that the SA8000 can wind up stuck on a screen from which TiVo can't change (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=2104973&.=.#post2104973).

bkdtv (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=39640&.=.) warns that the SA8000HD doesn't output HD and SD output simultaneously (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=2104651&.=.#post2104651) (which means HD needs to be disabled when using it with TiVo) and that some (software) versions don't even output 480i to S-Video and composite.

Beware that many 8000 series boxes running newer versions of SARA have an auto-shutoff after idle period (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=2470291&.=.#post2470291) in the middle of the night feature that will cause problems.

Since it is an analog-only box, a partial workaround is to put it in standby.

Leon WIlkinson (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=488&.=.) reports (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=610452&.=.#post610452) the Ranger 5000 can be used as a replacement for the SA 8610.

This would mean a cable with a 1/8" mono phone plug on each end - Radio Shack sells these. I did not have an opportunity to try this.” rsnaider (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=22048&.=.) reports (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1599288&.=.#post1599288) that channel changes are very accurate with this box and that Fast also works well.

UEC Technologies DCD2200i (http://www.uec.co.za/usa/products/DCD2200i.htm): Motorola 10006-Medium/Fast

According to mothracon (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=70324&.=.), Motorola codes 60074-Medium and Fast work but not well (http://forums.tivo.com/pe/forums/printpost.jsp?postID=10101286). TiVo recommends (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1826371&.=.#post1826371) 10006, 10042, or 10046 for now, but again they are not reliable. TiVoBill (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=24772&.=.) confirms (http://forums.tivo.com/pe/action/forums/displaysinglethread?rootPostID=10101122) that this box currently has problems working with TiVo.

A new member reports (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1904585&.=.#post1904585) that Motorola 10006-Fast works well with a Xantech IR emitter “right above the : in the digital time display”.

CleaDeb (http://forums.tivo.com/pe/profile/publicprofile.jsp?memberID=10102893) reports (http://forums.tivo.com/pe/action/forums/displaysinglethread?rootPostID=10101948) that an IR tent/fort helps greatly with channel-changing reliability. See the links at the end for tips on building IR tent/forts.

RCN Chicago recommends (http://forums.tivo.com/pe/forums/displaypost.jsp?postID=10102182) the following: “choose either Motorola or General Instruments for the cable box; and use 00258, 10042, or 00042 with a medium pulse width. Only connect one of the IR blasters as far away as the length of the IR blaster will allow measured even with the remote sensor on the box.”

Scratchy (http://forums.tivo.com/pe/profile/publicprofile.jsp?memberID=10103694) reports (http://forums.tivo.com/pe/forums/displaypost.jsp?postID=10102182) that some boxes are better at changing channels than others, so try exchanging boxes that don't work reliably even after trying all these tips. The thread also has information on revisions that work better or worse.

TiVo is apparently now recommending Clearview 10019 as an IR code for these boxes.

More and more, it sounds like these boxes are modified Motorola DCT2000 series cable boxes, so also see the general notes for Motorola boxes and the specific tips in the DCT2000 section.

See Thomson below.

DirecTV D10-200, D10-300, D10-400: 10074

As noted by poster ClearToLand (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=2441534&.=.#post2441534), the home control cable does not necessarily work with these models. According to TiVo, some do not have that port activated or are missing the port entirely, but IR code 10074 should work.

DirecTV H10: 10074

DirecTV believes the IR is exactly the same as for the D10 models, although there is some evidence this is not the case. Note that enabling RF control will prevent the IR (default) from working properly. "To change RF functionality go the System Setup screen, choose REMOTE in the left menu. Select IR/RF Setup button and follow the on screen instructions."

Serial control does not work.

DISH Receivers:

Compatible with DISH Network receivers that support IR control (except when DISH introduces software bugs†). For further info on specific models, see their entries below, TiVo's article “Does the DVR Support Dish Network/EchoStar? (http://customersupport.tivo.com/tivoknowbase/root/public/tv1016.htm)”, and the TiVo Forum FAQ (http://www.tivofaq.com/)'s entry “Dish Network (EchoStar) receiver compatibility (http://www.tivofaq.com/Hardware.html#Dish)”.

DISH/EchoStar receivers stop accepting digits for channel changes after being tuned to an unsubscribed channel, leaving the receiver stuck on with a “You do not subscribe to this channel” error screen. Therefore, it is important to remove unsubscribed channels from Channels You Receive. To recover from this stuck state, use channel up/down on the DISH remote.

† The cautious might want to keep an eye on DISH Network's software upgrade page (http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/customerCare/technical/software_versions/index.asp). Be especially careful with turning off the receiver since that can help allow automatic software upgrades.

Use Enter Key: No. Otherwise, 9xx channels cannot be tuned (http://www.tivofaq.com/Hardware.html#900s).

For those comfortable making hardware modifications, most non-IR DISH, EchoStar, HTS, and JVC receivers can be made to receive IR using Carlton Bale's Dish IR Upfit (http://www.carltonbale.com/dish/4000/) procedure.

Also, according to JAB (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=40&.=.), “Always, always, always get a dual LNB system. In fact, you should consider getting the larger Dish 500 dish, since it may be required to get your locals or other desirable programming, and it supports at least two satellite receivers out-of-the-box.”

In general, according to Mark Lamutt (http://www.dbstalk.com/member.php?u=27), a moderator of DBSTalk.com (DBSTalk.com), “all Dish Network IR codes are the same, except for the dishplayer.” Nevertheless, users have reported that certain codes work better or do not work with certain DISH receivers.

DISH 301 (http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/products/receivers/dish301/index.shtml): EchoStar 10001-Fast (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1391706&.=.#post1391706), Enter Key: No

EchoStar 10043-Medium (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1376896&.=.#post1376896), Enter Key: No also works (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1409776&.=.#post1409776) well.

See this post (http://archive.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1410146&.=.#post1410146) for special advice on positioning the IR emitters for the DISH 301.

DISH 322/522: EchoStar 10001-Fast

Be sure the receiver is set to remote address 1.

al_bburn (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=65025&.=.) writes (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&threadid=151371&.=.) “All seems to work ok with one very irritating exception. The 322 schedules a daily call to get program guide information and check for software updates. When its done, it power cycles itself and instead of just going to a channel, it displays 'Press Select to Continue'. Grrrrrrr. Tivo cannot change the channel because it cannot press select.”

Peterod (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=63532&.=.) has found the following workaround (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1734484&.=.#post1734484): “I have the 322 set for a 4am update connection. […] What I did was add a daily timer to ‘AutoTune’ the 322 to any sub'ed channel at 5am. The 322 is tuned at that time to the selected timer and the ‘Select Button’ screen is reset.” If both of the 322's tuners are being used with TiVo, apply the workaround to both (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1738683&.=.#post1738683).

gl9500 (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=51480&.=.) posts a wealth of other helpful DISH 322 tips (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=2034921&.=.#post2034921), including dealing with potential screensaver issues. chuckdfoster reports that for DISH 522s, AutoTune (see previous paragraph) works around the screensaver issue.

Another suggestion is to disable the daily updates (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=3127946&.=.#post3127946) and always leave the receiver on.

After the 7.95 upgrade, IR might no longer be compatible (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&postid=1560135&.=.#post1560135). However, Sparkman87 (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=53553&.=.) reports (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?p=172366#post172366) that 10011-Medium still works.

This is not a limited rollout: receivers set to download new updates should have gotten it automatically Nov 25th 2003. See the general notes about trying to delay getting software upgrades.

Up to version 7.69, Sparkman87 (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=53553&.=.) recommended (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?p=172359#post172359) 10011-Medium worked.

If you don't already have it, install the 7.83 update, now available at DISH Network's software upgrade page (http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/customerCare/technical/software_versions/index.asp). This is not a limited rollout: all Model 6000's set to download new updates should have gotten it automatically Thu Nov 13 16:00 UTC 2003.

The 7.80–7.81 upgrades that went out to many owners (first reported here by 8vsb owners who got 7.80) caused severe IR control problems. These problems were, in fact, not limited to TiVo owners (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=19396). Assorted universal remotes and some models of ReplayTV were also affected. Some (but not most) Dish owners stated that after 7.80, they couldn't use various Dish remotes reliably either. One person reported that the front panel buttons on the Model 6000 were also affected. See the “OFFICIAL 6000 Remote Bug RESPONSE from Dish Network (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=20234)” thread and this post (http://www.dbstalk.com/showpost.php?postid=165575&postcount=52) from DBSTalk.Com for more info.

EchoStar DishPlayer 7100, 7200:

JAB (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/member.php?.=.&s=&action=getinfo&userid=40&.=.) recommends against (http://www.tivofaq.com/Hardware.html#Dish) these models, saying “I don't recommend using the Dishplayer 7100 or 7200 with a TiVo. Although TiVo has the IR codes, the Dishplayers are easily left in modes where they won't respond properly to IR or won't provide a full screen picture.”

TiVo DVRs with 7.2 software should use IR (http://forums.tivo.com/pe/action/forums/displaypost?postID=10185942). This is a side effect of the fix for the D10-100 upgrade problem, and DirecTV has been notified about the issue. For now, DVRs with 7.2 software should use IR codes 105 or 10051 (be sure IR is enabled on the DirecTV receiver).

Thomson/DirecTV D10-100: ‼ 10074 or the TV Translator (http://www.patersontech.com/Translator/D10.aspx) w/ MPG

With the latest software update, D10-100 receivers can no longer change to local channels using the home control cable. DirecTV's offical spokesperson has said DirecTV is pursuing a fix (http://www.wired.com/news/digiwood/0,1412,67822,00.html?tw=rss.TOP). The latest software update also introduced a screensaver, which interferes with recording for those using home control cables with the APG protocol. For now, the recommendation is to use IR code 10074.

For those not happy with IR, Paterson Tech has released a firmware update for their TV Translator (http://www.patersontech.com/Translator/D10.aspx) that supposedly deals with both the protocol change and the screensaver issue!

For hackers, Gary Sargent now has a Pronto to TiVo IR code converter (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?.=.&s=&threadid=181242&.=.) (in beta). Enter in Pronto code and get back a script to be run on the TiVo to add the new IR code. Palm PDAs running the trial version of the OmniRemote software can also capture IR codes and save them in Pronto format. If you successfully get TiVo to control your cable/satellite box using the new code, let me know, and I'll see if TiVo will add it officially (they've done this on at least one occasion for a user-contributed IR code for a U.S. cable/satellite box and on multiple occasions for UK STBs). A final possibility for incompatible cable/satellite boxes is to use a program like Girder (http://www.girder.nl/) to convert IR codes. Teach Girder to accept one set of IR commands (Scientific Atlanta's have been recommended, at least for non-satellite use) and output the codes for your cable/satellite box. Then, just tell TiVo you have a Scientific Atlanta cable box.

It would be nice if we could have this pinned to the top as it is very useful.

I too am one of the new owners of the RCA model DRD435RH. I bought this unit, after the reading the posts here which said that any of the new RCA receivers would support serial control from a TiVo. Has anyone got this working? Is IR the only way to control this box ? I hope not. If yes, what are the IR codes? Does anyone have the info abt the other new RCA box DRD455RH ?

I was also wondering if anyone had the Sony SATHD200 or the Zenith HDSAT520 HDTV Receivers. Can they be controlled using the serial port ? If not what is their IR codes?

Thanks

Old: Motorola DCT2000 from Comcast (when it was AT&T Broadband)
• 3 digits, No enter key, 10006 Slow

New: Motorola DCT5100 hi-def box from Comcast
• 3 digits, No enter key, 10006 Slow

I didn't have to change anything. However, I tested the IR blaster with this new box for only about one day. My SA TiVo degraded the quality too much to use it for any of the already-too-compressed SD digital channels (which the 2000 delivered better than the 5100 does), or with the high-quality HD channels either.

count me as one of the " some people have erratic channel changing behavior using serial (changes to correct channel, then changes again)." when using the morolota dct2224 box

i can get it to work for a few days by power down and reboot both the tivo and the cable box at the same time, but you never know how long it wil work for. until i can get it fix i'm using a blster that is glued on and the code 10042

I have the Hughes Director GAEBO. I have it set to Medium, using the IR blasters. I was having horrible luck with those on and off. And believe it or not, I unplugged the IR blasters and it still changes the channels even with a lot better accuracy. I'm thinking though of getting a new Satellite box with a serial cable.

I recently posted a warning on another thread regarding the inability to control most DirecTv receivers with a serial control cable. I hate IR and purchased a Hughes GAEBOA receiver because it had a low speed data port. In addition, it was inexpensive especially compared to the Sony "A" series receivers with a low speed date port. Using a serial control cable purchased from TIVO I was unable to control program changes. I searched this site and found a post that the low speed data port for the GAEBOA unit was not activated to do anything!! Willing to bite the bullet regarding the cost of a Sony unit (all my equipment is Sony) I e-mailed its help site and was told that the Sony unit can not be controlled by a serial connection from TIVO. So, I give up. I can't stand IR and can't find a serial connection that will work other than some indications that the RCA will. Now posts on this thread lend doubt to that assertion. In the meantime, my technician recommends living with IR until the HD Direct TIVO comes out. In the meantime, I have a Sony A-50 DirectV receiver which is controlled perfectly by my SA Series 2 Sony TIVO using a parallel like connector which came with my series 1 Sony TIVO.

it's a Sony SAT B50

There's a serial port AND another port right next to it called "VCR Control" which I'm thinking is a low-speed data port. It's a standard one-pin plug port, looks like the low-speed cable would fit into it.

Sorry, reading the SAT-B50 manual, I don't see any sign that that port can be used to control the receiver. It appears to be used only to allow the receiver to control a VCR.

Let me know if you get any further information on the problem with changing high-numbered channels. In the meantime, are you using IR or serial?

I have a Sony SAT-50 being run by my Sony Series 2 SA TIVO using a serial control cable which was originally supplied with my Sony series 1 SA TIVO. It works great. The problem is that newer Sony receivers and, from what I can see, all the other newer receivers don't have a serial connector. Most, but not all, have a low speed data port which, in theory, can be controlled by TIVO using a Home Control Cable which can be purchased from TIVO for a nominal amount. The Home Control Cable is a stero plug which fits into the TIVO with an RJ14 plug which fits the low speed data port. I purchased a Hughes GAEBOA specifically because it had a low speed data port and was very reasonably priced (under $100). I couldn't get it to work using the Home Control Cable and found on this bulletinboard a post saying the low speed data port wasn't programmed to do anything! I then e-mailed Sony and was told that none of its receivers could be controlled by a TIVO other than using IR. I hope this clarification helps. If anyone knows how to connect so that TIVO controls the receiver other than by IR, I sure would like to know.

Hate to post twice in a row but more research on this thread seems to indicate that some receivers can be controlled by TIVO using the Home Control Cable and the low speed data port. Apparently, the setting on the TIVO for APG is critical. I have a Hughes GCEBOA which is in warranty and doesn't work but apparently can be controlled by TIVO. If I can get some confirmation of that, I will be motivated to return it under warranty.

If you haven't done so already, you might want to read phone1's post (a link is provided in the Hughes GCEB0A entry) and send a PM to phone1 to confirm the details. Also, if you find that the GCEB0A requires APG, let me know, and I'll add that info to the list.

I have a Zenith HD receiver which is fairly new and cannot find any code that will permit an IR blaster to change the channels on the receiver. I realize that I cannot record in HD but need the ability to record other satellite programs not in HD. To do that I need to be able to have the TIVO communicate with the receiver to change the channels on the receiver. Does anyone know of a possible serial connection or other solution which might work?

Does anyone have any information/educated guesses as to whether the soon to be released Sony HD300 STB's serial port will work with a TiVo Series2 serial port to change channels? I see in the above list that the serial port in the HD200 does not work with TiVo. However, I noticed that the specs for the HD200 refer to the serial port as an Authorized Service Port, while the specs for the HD300 refer to it as a Data Port...maybe I'm reading too much into that. Also, the HD300 can simultaneously transmit analog and HD signals like the Samsung 160. Any thoughts/info as to whether the HD300's serial port will work for changing channels? Thanks!

Also, when there are replies like "10006 fast", how do you know which brand name the code is listed under? Is there a cross ref by #?

Please help! very frustrated!:)

It may be that the remote is an RF remote (does it work through a wall?) or an IrDA remote. For RF, you might be able to control the box with an IR to RF converter. For IrDA, you might be able to control the box with an IR to IrDA dongle, such as is used with UK TiVos to control some IrDA boxes (you might even be able to order it through TiVo). If you can figure out the type of remote control signal being sent and the codes involved and are willing to do some programming, PCs and some specialty devices can be programmed to receive a channel change command from the TiVo and then resend it in the required format. Also, when there are replies like "10006 fast", how do you know which brand name the code is listed under? If just the number and speed are listed, then the brand name is the same as the name in the list. For those cases where the required code is under a different name, this is indicated. Is there a cross ref by #? Unfortunately, no. This is why, for example, the list says that the 00995 code for UK Scientific Atlanta boxes (which on rare occasion turn up in the U.S.) might or might not be available on U.S. TiVos. I actually went through about a third of the manufacturers to see if any had the 00995 code (the U.S. Scientific Atlanta entry does not), but I gave up because it was just too tedious.

I have a Sony SVR-2000 stand alone series I TiVo and an RCA DRD450RG DIRECTV satellite tuner. I have very successfully used a serial home control cable with the AGP setting to control the satellite tuner for some time. It was great--fast and error free.

Recently I had a problem with my satellite system and the tuner was without a signal for several days. Now the tuner works fine, but when TiVo tries to change the channel there is a brief black-out, then TiVo thinks the channel has changed but it has not. In fact the satellite tuner can be controlled only using its own remote.

I've tried walking through the setup again and a cold reboot of both the tuner and the TiVo, without affect.

Any ideas?

I haven't heard of any such problem with RCA receivers, and the only thing somewhat close is the simultaneous reboot problem with older Sony receivers. I would suggest trying to turn both pieces of equipment off for a while, then try booting them simultaneously, then booting each one independently to see if any of that clears up the problem.

Just a note on this. I've got one of those stupid DCT2244s that suck so badly. I was having a lot of trouble with channel changing on a replacement they dumped on my last week. So I had them swap it again, and this same-identical unit works perfectly. If you're having trouble changing channels, get a new box from the cable company and keep switching until they give you a good one.

I then tried switching back to IR control, which used to work fine, although it was much slower. Now this doesn't work either. If I look directly at the IR light source on the blaster it doesn't glow when I run the TiVo IR test program and try to channels. This makes me think that I have a hardware problem that is affecting both the IR output and the serial home control cable output. The box is several years old, so this isn't that hard to believe.

Thoughts? It has a lifetime contract so I'd hate to give it up.

I've never noticed any glow with the naked eye from the IR emitters. As far as I know, the light from the IR emitters can only be seen with a device that can sense IR, such as most digital cameras. If you have such a camera, you should give that a shot.

TonyR
12-02-2003, 04:48 PM
ccwf,

I didn't know that about the infra-red. I took your advice and tried looking at the IR emitter with the LCD viewer on my digital camera, and still didn't see any light when I ran the satellite receiver setup program.

I also checked the signal from the IR emitter plug and home control cable plug using a VOM. The needle didn't move at all. I don't think I'm getting any output from either one.

ccwf
12-02-2003, 05:02 PM
OK. Just to be doubly sure, have you tried using your digital camera's LCD viewer to look at other IR sources (e.g., the TiVo remote) to be sure that it is capable of showing IR? (Some digital cameras have non-removable IR filters.)

As far as preserving your lifetime subscription goes, if you have your TiVo exchanged using an authorized service provider (which costs money), your lifetime subscription will be transferred, too. You might also try asking over the in the Upgrade forum if this is the type of thing that is likely to be repairable by yourself or by a local TV repair shop.

TonyR

ccwf,

Good thinking re checking camera. As you predicted the LCD viewer on the camera showed the remote control's IR transmitter as a bright white light when a button was pressed, even though the light was barely visible to the naked eye. A handy tool for diagnosing IR emitter problems.

Anyway this confirms that my IR control is totally down as well as the home control cable.

I'll follow up on the leads you suggested for getting it fixed. Many thanks.

If you get no response at all from any code, it is possible that your IR emitter cable is damaged (happens sometimes) or not plugged in securely. If you have a digital camera, as discussed in the posts above, you can probably use that to see if you are getting any IR from your emitters.

Heres the problem.. have went thru the ENTIRE ir code list for the motorola box, but i'm in kind of a pickle. In a 3 digit channel, the very first digit will be dropped with 100% certainty. But, if the enter key option is turned off, you can see the cable box getting the numbers entered, but the change will not go thru, it just bounces back to wherever it was before. This happens on every single GI/Motorola code And the 2-3 digit options had no effect.

Also, whether i use one or both ir blasters has no effect either.

This particular box is a GI Dct2000 with no serial port. I have a true motorola branded dct2000 with the serial port in another room, have yet to try it, maybe that will work?

(Moot point: tivo didn't come with the serial cord  )

Any ideas you can come up with on this one? From what i hear, these particular boxes are just plain EVIL to set up.

Thanks in advance, and pardon any newbiness :D

Start by swapping your cable boxes to see if that helps.

As for the serial cable, the TiVo is supposed to come with one. If yours didn't, I would complain. If all else fails, you can buy one from the TiVo store. Serial cables also come with some digital cameras, PDAs, calculators, and so forth that can be used, often in conjunction with a null modem adapter.

Thank you for your incredible amount of work in compiling and maintaining this list. I have purchased a DirecTV system w/ the Philips DSX5500 receivers. I already have a standalone Philips 14 hour TIVO. I was dismayed to find that they may not be compatible.

However, when I contacted TIVO support, they told me that these receivers would work if they were firmware version ML3 or greater. ML1 or ML2 would not work.

Has anyone heard this... can anyone confirm this? This system isn't being installed until Dec. 26, so there is still time for me to return it (to Best Buy) and exchange for an RCA system, but I like the Philips receivers better.

I just wanted to let everybody know that our engineers put in some long hours to make us compatible with the newer versions of Philips' DSX5500 & 5540 models. IR codes 10064 & 10065 are now available but will only work properly if the Enter Key is set to "Yes".

We believe that these codes are compatible with ML-3 hardware versions and above because they carry the newer firmware versions from the factory (to fix a problem Philips acknowledged). Older hardware versions of these models (ML-1 & 2) are very reliable IF they can get the newer firmware, but we do not currently know of any way for a customer to get the newer firmware remotely.

Greetings to all. I'm a total newbie when it comes to cable box hook-up so please forgive my seeming ignorance. I have an OLD HDR112 Tivo that I've been using for 3+ years without a cable converter. The other day, I picked up a Pioneer BDV1100 from Time-Warner to add digital cable to the household. I gather I can NOT use the serial control port from what I've gleaned from this thread (GREAT thread), and I see that the correct codes would be the Scientific Atlanta 00018-FAST set-up. I want to know if I can come out of the S-Video output on the Pioneer to go into the HDR112 or if I must use the RF in. Will the Tivo recognize signal coming in from the "S" input? Also, I guess I have to go through System Setup all over again to change from Cable, no box, to Cable, with box...?
Thanks in advance for everyone's help and patience and best regards.

Yes, TiVo has an S-Video input port and can be told to accept S-Video input. With most cable/satellite boxes, S-Video input produces the best results.

As you surmised, it is necessary to repeat guided setup to switch to a cable box configuration when previously using TiVo w/o one.

The Sony DHG-M55CB cable box works fine with IR, code 10050-Medium, no Enter. It may also work with a direct connection between the IR Out jack on the TiVo and the "IR Receiver" jack on the cable box, if it's like Sony CTRL-S inputs. This would mean a cable with a 1/8" mono phone plug on each end - Radio Shack sells these. I did not have an opportunity to try this.

Every time I read this thread I get more and more worried.
I got my sister and her family a Tivo that should be arriving tomorrow.
After reading this thread I asked what cable box they had, she said its a GI and from the pictures from the link off of this thread it looks like a DCT2000.
Does every single person have problem with these boxes or is it just some "lucky" few?
They live in a different state than me so I can't set it up for them, and they aren't the kind of people who will go through all the hassles of all the different steps it takes to correct controlling their box.. (serial, different IR codes, Y/N enter button, and forget about building a fort!)

Please tell me this is just a case of "You only hear about the complaints, because if it works, no one posts."

For a variety of reasons, I had four or five of these boxes in my house over the course of a week, and was able to see just how much the specific box itself has to do with these issues. Maybe its age or wear and tear, but different DCT2000s from the same cable company have different channel changing performance characteristics.

Old System: Original Tivo and Dish (Phillips) 2700 receiver.

We must of recently gotten a software upgrade on the 2700. Currently 795. When trying to set IR codes, 10011 does not feature in the list. I have 00075, 10038, 10043, 10064 and 10065. It was set to 10038-Meduim (I think). Now it's dropping digits.

Ideas ?

Thanks,
Craig.

Just checked. It's a Philips box, model 2700 receiving Dishnet satellite. Tivo is set to Philips, and 10043; Fast; No Enter Reqd. It works well except for 4 digit numbers. I just changed the Tivo received channels to switch from the 8300 series to the local numbers (2, 5, etc.). This should improve the reliability.

Philips DSX5353 - I use code 10038 Medium. It is difficult to tell where the IR receiveris on this box. I use both IR emitters placed at either end of the "Digital Multi-Satellite Receiver" label on the box. This works most of the time. It does have occasional misses of one number.

thank you very much forthe direction ! I have a Scientific Atlanta 8610 and now understand that the strength of the IR signal could be a fact or in the reliability of changing the channels correctly ! Before your rply, I had not thought aboutthat as possibly being a problem. I am also going to try other codes in setup to see if one works better than another. I hppe I can find a solution since I hate missing all these shows that I ask TiVo to get for me.

I have TiVo only about three months (System 2 ...4.0 software)

Figured out why the link to Girder wasn't working and fixed it. For those with boxes or lineups not supported by TiVo, Girder is a program which, when used with the appropriate add-on or bundled hardware, can be programmed to output learned IR in response to IR sent to it. For example, I believe I have read of 4DTV+TiVo owners programming Girder to receive Scientific Atlantic/DirecTV/DISH remote codes for channel changes (from the TiVo) and in turn send out remapped 4DTV channel changes.

This is interesting and if someone can tell me why this IS working I am curious.

Today, I set up an upgraded Tivo (Philips HDR112 w/120 GB drive) for my brother. He has Comcast digital cable and uses the Motorola DCT-2224 tuner box.

On the back of the cable box, it has a serial connection (15-pin?) and a microphone pin sized jack that has "IR" above it. Seeing that the Tivo also of course has two jacks this size on the back (one for Serial and one for IR), I figured no harm in connecting the IR ports of both boxes together with a simple monoural microphone cable.

During the Tivo guided setup, this cable worked successfully in changing channels using the 0093-Fast code. The Tivo channels key in first and then the cable box a second later.

The really interesting part is, I removed the cable from the back of the two boxes (not connected to either), didn't change anything else in the setup, and the channel changing STILL works flawlessly in the same manner as before! Why is this? Did I miss the reason in another thread? I am of course only using the Series 1 peanut remote for changing channels. I thought maybe somehow the peanut had the code for the cable box and sent it to them simultaneously, but there is still that second or two delay where the Tivo keys in first and then the cable box after.

How is this working? IR talking through the boxes somehow in the back?

How is this working? IR talking through the boxes somehow in the back? The “eye” in the middle of the front panel of Philips Series 1 TiVo (and most other Series 1's) is a powerful IR emitter.

As a side note to the 322 workaround. The 322 has two tuners. Setting up the timer of tuner one will only reset TV1. You need to setup a timer for tuner two (TV2) if you have a Replay and a Tivo setup with the 322 like I do. Resetting one will not reset the other.

Okay, now this is interesting... I am having the exact same problem on my Philips Series 1 all of a sudden - the number 6 will NOT be sent to my digital cable box, and this just started happening. I have tried two different IR emitters, and am now using serial control, and nothing with a "6" in it is sent. Did something change recently that we don't know about? I thought there was no more updates for Series 1? Something is definitely funny here...

I was researching this problem when I stumbled across your post. Anyone else have this problem?!

Help!

Just convinced the wife to ditch Adelphia for a new cable startup in our town, Oxford Networks, and now our TiVo wont change channels.

After three calls to TiVo customer service, they basically told me I was out of luck... Anybody know the codes for this box:

Marketed by "Myrio" (their logo is on the remote), and manufactured by i3 Micro of Sweden. Tiny little silver unit with a large opaque blue plastic swath across the front, no clock or channel indicator, just 3 really bright blue lights...

Do I need some kind of euro code, or perhaps a different freq. ir flasher?

TiVo suggested codes from Scientific Atlanta, General instruments, and Next Level Communications, none worked...

Thanks for looking,
Subbacultcha

I think you are the first TiVo owner here with that box, unfortunately. I would try asking your cable company if your box works with any universal remotes (other than their own), and, if so, what type of box should you tell the universal remote you have.

I know for the UK TiVo owners, if you have a Pronto remote (preferably) or a Palm PDA (or friends or neighbors with such), you can capture the IR codes from your cable box's remote and send the captured codes to TiVo, who will then send out the new codes for the box to everyone. I would imagine they do this for U.S. TiVos, too, although I don't know this for sure.

Thanks, Charles.

I'll give TiVo a call and see what they say about capturing codes. I have a Handspring Visor running Palm OS, will that work?

Also, there is no serial port on the box, but there is a rj45 pass thru marked "PC", another rj45 marked "SMP", and a pair of usb ports... Any chance of controlling the box trough those?

Yes, the Handspring Visor should work. The easiest way to capture codes is with the OmniRemote program from Pacific Neo-Tek (http://www.pacificneotek.com/). (You can capture codes with the trial version.) Based on the experience of this Brits and Aussies, OmniRemote might not result in quite as a clean a capture as with a Pronto, but it should be good enough, possibly with a little manual hand-holding.

Here (http://www.tivoportal.co.uk/stb-unsupported.htm) is moderator Gary Sargent's page on how to get codes added to UK TiVos with a link on how to do the captures. If TiVo is unable to handle the resultant captured data in CCF format directly, then we'd also need to get Gary or someone else's assistance with converting the CCF data into TiVo format.

Note: You can often use a floodlight or bright flashlight to locate the IR sensor in your cable or satellite box.

If the main post does not indicate otherwise, place the emitters according to the following diagram from TiVo's article How Do I Verify Cable and Satellite Box IR Cable Connections? (http://customersupport.tivo.com/tivoknowbase/root/public/tv1048.htm):
http://customersupport.tivo.com/tivoknowbase/root/public/images/tv1048/tv1048_02.gif

However, some boxes work better with other placements for the IR emitters. For example, the DCT2000 series works best with the emitter attached directly to the face of the box over the IR sensor inside an IR fort/tent. Special instructions for boxes that need them are included in the main post.

I can see the sensor, and i tested it with the cable remote. it's not that it is misfiring and switching to the wrong channel, it's not responding at all...

Hehe, called the regional sales dude for Myrio corp, and he actually called back... Said he'd ask the tech guys if they'd had any feedback about this box and TiVo.

Myrio main office and i3 Micro's US office, both in WA, let the machine pick up...

In re: to the Dishnetwork 322. Setting up the timer is a one time deal. Make sure that once you setup the timer you leave the timer on when you exit the screen. Leaving the screen without turning on the timer will not reset the 322. By default the timer is not turned on when you set it up.

Recently switched to Cox digital cable from dish network and the Tivo IR out to Motorola serial in works like a charm. This is Motorola DCT2524. It hasn't dropped a change yet, whereas the old Echostar box with IR blaster and foil tent dropped one in 25 changes (and that after many days of testing/optimizing).

Granted this is only after a couple hundred changes and not months or years of use, but so far I'm impressed.

dudemac, are you getting absolutely no response at all? Is it possible that your IR emitter cable is not plugged in all the way or is damaged? (The emitter cable can stop working if badly bent.) There are posts earlier in this thread on how to use a digital camera to see if IR is coming out of the IR emitters.

I have a Samsung SIR-Ts360 HDTV reciever and my Tivo is unable to change channels on this receiver properly. It misses the first few digits of the channel on most occassions. So changing to channel 506 results in changing to channel 06 or sometimes 6

Does anyone know of the correct IR codes for this receiver. I am using 10062. But I am having all the above problems with this code. This code worked fine on the SIR-TS160

Just in case someone wonders what a Motorola RG2200 is, Next Level has been bought out by Motorola. The RG2200 is now a Motorola product. However, TiVo will still list it as "Next Level" for now, and it's possible Qwest is still providing equipment with the Next Level name on it rather than Motorola.

Hi all...

I've been searching these forums and Tivo help for HOURS now and can't find my answer, so here goes:

Equip: Sony SVR-2000 Motorola DCT2224

I hooked up the serial cable correctly, double-checked that it was in. Then, changed my Tivo setup for the Digital Cable Ext. service, etc.

All my connections are correct, but I don't have the option in my menu's to change to a serial cable connection! It only shows (or allows) an IR connection. I'm baffled by this.

I have software ver: 3.0-01-1-010

Per the Tivo site, I should be able to go to it from TiVo Central, select Messages & Setup; then Recorder & Phone Setup; then Cable/Satellite Box, then Control Cable Setup; then Cable Box; then Serial Cable.

When I get to the Cable Box option and click it, there's no "Control Cable Setup" option to select to go to Serial Cable. I get only these two options; "Connection to Recorder" (which brings me to my video/audio connections... which are correct and working) and "Cable Box Setup" (which brings me to the IR setup... which code to select) there's NO option for Serial Cable.

Am I missing something??

Thanks,

As for the hack... sorry, I didn't see that small link for what I needed to do there... I found the thread I needed there (which I couldn't find before for some reason). I don't understand why a hack is needed because on the Tivo site (TiVo's article“Changing Channels on a DCT2000 Series Cable Box Using the Serial Control Cable), it shows that serial communication is immediately available through software ver. 3.0 and higher on a Series 1 Tivo, which is what I have. Doesn't make sense.

The article (http://customersupport.tivo.com/tivoknowbase/root/public/tv031120.htm) you referenced indicates serial control is possible with 3.0 if your service number begins with 130 or 230. Does your service number begins with either of those numbers?

Charles,

You may want to add a notation to the entry for the Dish 301 regarding the unsubscribed channels compatibility issue. If the "Channels You Receive" preferences are set incorrectly, the TiVo can get stuck on the "You do not subscribe to this channel" error message, from which a "channel up" or "channel down" keypress on the Dish remote itself is required to recover.

ccwf
04-19-2004, 01:11 PM
There was already an orange warning on this in the general notes for DISH receivers. I've now made the warning more verbose and added a sentence about using the DISH remote channel up/down to recover.

On my TODO list is creating a web version of the main post that will, when a cable/satellite box is selected, automatically show the general notes for the manufacturer of the box in addition to the notes for the specific model. Right now, people have to look those up separately, and I worry that most people may not realize that general DISH notes exist in addition to the specific entries for individual DISH receivers. Yet, the general notes are too lengthy to duplicate in each individual entry.

Hmmm. I should probably add a sentence to each individual DISH receiver entry saying to also look at the general DISH notes.

I have it set for 10038, medium. It seems to work fine if I am sitting right in front of the box, but whenever I move back to the couch, I get spotty success. This doesn't make any sense to me!

Do I need to contact our installer and tell them the Philips just won't work with our TIVO and I need something else?

It's bad enough we've lived without cable/satellite for the last four days - thank God we had a small selection of items to watch off of our TIVO.

Any advice on how to make this Phillips receiver work would be appreciated!

Found out today that the latest firmware pushed to Scientific Atlanta 4200 boxes by Cablevision added a new option that allows the box to be turned on when a channel change is sent to the box. This means that if the box powers down (on purpose or accidentally) it will power back up when the TiVo changes the channel. In the settings look for "set:power on keys" and select "Power and Numeric". I tried it out here and it seems to work pretty well.

... Credit goes to Gary Sargent @ www-tivoportal-co-uk
(sorry can't post a link yet, replace '-' with '.')

It's for a STB "Fortec Star". It's a satellite box which I use to receive FTA channels from T5 and AMC4.

Gary is very helpful on setting the new code to work. For new STB box owners - capture your code and send it to Gary, chances are he'll make it to work !

I'm not aware of any confirmed cases of the IR port itself being bad, so most likely the IR emitter cable was damaged or is not plugged in all the way. Also, note that the IR from the emitters is faint, so you need to look carefully when checking with a camera.

Finally got fed up w/ comcast cable and got a dishnetwork 322 receiver a week ago.

After doing some reading here and a few other googled websites, it works great. Albeit w/ the necessary workaround to awaken the 322 after it's daily update.

But I have not yet seen the supposed "4-hour screensaver" some have mentioned. Perhaps that was a problem w/ earlier software versions, but does not appear to happen w/ mine (v157 if I read the sysinfo screen correctly). I was away most of the day a couple of days ago and my 322 never went into screensaver mode.

If it does happen to surface, I believe I have a perfect workaround: simply add a manual VCR timer on the 322 that starts, say, 30-60 minutes after the daily update, that lasts for 23 hours or so. That should take care any screensaver.

I use Echostar code 10001-Fast. Works flawlessly so far, except for when my SA Tivo (series 1 Phillips), does the FIRST channel change after the manual VCR timer (after AutoTune timers, my tivo changes fine). The first digit tivo sends via IR blaster seems to get eaten up by the dish 322. Simple workaround. Just add a manual daily 5min Tivo SeasonPass a couple of minutes after the VCR timer starts. Voila.

My tivo came w/ twin IR blaster "Y-cable". So I just attached both about one-inch away in front (to the left and right) of the 3 IR ports on the 322.

I have to add the 322 is a nice little dual-tuner receiver. From what info I've gathered, the daily update should only take a few seconds (or few minutes at most). The 322 needs to be in standby mode (both TV1 and TV2) to switch to the Sat channel to download guide data, then it leaves itself in standby mode (screensaver mode), which is why you need to add the manual 322 timer to "awaken" it for Tivo.

I also disable the front-panel (up/down) buttons via the 322 menus; which unfortunately does not disable the front-panel "power" button. So I use a 322 VCR timer (instead of AutoTune) just in case someone has hit the power off, having the Tivo manual 5-min daily SeasonPass, keeps the 322 out of standby mode after the daily update. However, if someone hits the power-off any other time and the Tivo wants to record, of course you're screwed.

Hope this is of use to someone.

For anyone after me.... I just received my home control cable from Tivo and hooked it up to my Sony A65 receiver coming from a Sony SVR3000. Changed options and bingo - works like a charm. $6.99 + shipping well spent.

We have two tivos, both on direcTV receivers.

Pioneer 57 onto a RCA DRD450RG I believe. This receiver has a low speed data port, but no option in the system setup to activate it. When plugged into the Tivo in MPG mode, the thing resets and gets guide data from the satellite again. In APG mode, it simply ignores it.

Same cable put between a pioneer 810 and an RCA DRD420RE box. Again this has no option to activate its low speed port. In MPG mode the receiver blanks the screen for a couple of seconds, and then comes right back to the same channel with no channel banner. In APG mode, it is ignored.

I noticed earlier that someone posted success with at least one of these boxes, and post #1 implies they both can work, though it's a little unclear. (Sorry ccwf; you're doing a sterling job here.)

Is there anything I'm missing here, or am I stuck with IR and losing a show or two each week?

I have the Dish 322, It is not connected to a phone line, as my Tivo is connected to the phone line. I don't know if this is part of my problem, but I keep getting that dreaded screensaver, and I was never able to get a cod to work for the channel changing, although the tivo remote does seem to be changing channels for me, I just get that black screen with the dish network screensaver, that says press select to continue. I tried the workaround thing, but when I try to put a stop time for the auto tune, it doesn't give me that option. It gives me the option for a start time, but not an end time. I really want to be able to get this tivo to work with my dish network, but It's been almost 2 weeks now and no one has been able to help me. Dish says they know nothing about tivo, and can't help out, Tivo is more helpful, but nothing has worked that they have told me to do. Someone Please help. Thanks.

Here's a quick question. On the back of my Motorola DCT6200 is an IR outlet. I'm not sure what it does, but since the cable receiver itself doesn't have a serial input, I was wondering if this could be used to change the channels instead of the IR blaster (which I may have lost).

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks,

ope

Except in the rare cases noted in the main U.S. list at the start of this thread and in Gary's UK list, IR ports cannot be used to control a cable/satellite box. They are IR output ports, used to control a VCR. The same is true for some serial-like ports.

Now, there is one U.S. satellite box with an RF-input port and many UK boxes that take IrDA.

As for replacement IR emitters, for Motorola cable boxes, Xantech stick-on IR emitters are generally recommended over the type TiVo supplies. They can be bought on-line (see the main post) and from some specialty stores.

I, too, got fed up with Comcast, and ordered Dish Network. I received the Dish 322 dual tuner. I have two tivo units i want to use and was wondering if there's a way. I want my Series 2 tivo hooked up to TV1 and my Series 1 tivo hooked up to TV2. However, TV2 channels are controlled by a UHF remote. Is there an easy way I can get the tivo to control this?

I have my Series 2 set up fine, and followed the tips on keeping it out of Stand By mode (Thank you!) Now I just need to figure out how to get the series 1 to control the channels on TV2.

Is it possible? Or will I need to just get another receiver with IR in order for the Tivo to control the channels.

Thanks for your help.

PS I did get the reply from ccwf at the end of this thread, but wasn't exactly sure where to go.

For those good with electronics and brave enough to attempt modifying, with a soldering iron, their DISH 322's to accept IR, see the IR upfit (http://www.carltonbale.com/dish/4000/) procedure. Note: The procedure is for older DISH receivers—it might or might not work for the DISH 322.

I believe most (all?) 322's are under the DHA or "lease" plan, so probably not a good idea to mess w/ the hardware directly. BWDIK.

Sounds like a good idea to just get a 2nd 322 receiver. One could try finding an external UHF to IR converter, but then you'd have to make sure the IR codes the Tivo would feed it would be compatible.

There are two versions of the Motorola DSR410, the current "DS" version (is a suffix), has a small indicator display in the upper left of the box (the IR sensor is to the riget of the clear display plastic). The older DNA version (actually Next-Level branded), is larger, and has a channel display in the middle.
Both work 100% (in my experience) with IR blasters. (note I don't have a DS version, but a DSR301, that is based on the same core design).

I also have a General Instruments DSR421CNM, which internally is based on the 410 DNA, but with the externally the smaller design of the 410DS and 470, although no panel buttons apart from power. The 421BNM has panel buttons. The 410 DNA, 421BNM and 401/405 have an input for a UHF receiver which MAY be able to be used for direct input from the IR jack, but I haven't tried.

The yet smaller DSR305 works too.

The DSR470 is based on the same core design as the DSR410DS.

All those Motorola/GI/Nextlevel receivers I have used use General Instruments 10035 Medium, with the remote address set to 000

I subscribe tothe Starchoice satellite service in Canada BTW, which is why I have, and know all about the Motorola satellite boxes.

Oh, and about the Next Level name and the RGxxxx boxes:
General Instuments began calling themselves that around the time they started digital cable and satellite (and their remote is sthe samt designt as one for some GI/NextLevel satellite boxes). Later NL changed their name back to GI, whoms sold out to Motorola. I m not sure exacly how NL fits into Motorola or GI otherwise.

Technologically, the RGxxxx units receive up to 3 channels of SD video over a DSL like phone connection, and connects to one TV at the box controlled by an IR connection, and two other sets over RF coax with UHF remotes.

Addition:
Got a brand new DSR315. Uses the same 10035 medium as the rest. IR receiver is between the satellite and mail indicator on the box.

classicsat, are you using TiVo's stock IR emitters, or are you using stick-on emitters? Also, with so much info, I slightly reörganized that section, cited some of the most vital stuff in the main post, and then included multiple links to your post for more info. I am using an emitter I cobbled together from the PCB from an old remote with wires connected to the LED, and a headphone plug at the other end. The opposite end of the remote is stuck between the satellite receiver and the box above it (another satellite receiver, not involved with the Tivo), so that the emitter illuminates the IR sensor on the receiver.

EDIT: I should add I bent the LED backwards so it pints towards the box.

Another way to change the remote address is to simultaniously pressing the up and down arrow on the receiver, where a box in the upper right of the screen should come up with Ax, where x is the remote address. Press up or down to adjust it, and select to set it.

The boxes I gave were my experience, but it would be safe to say all 3xx/4xx Starchoice/Motorola/GI/NextLevel boxes (you can include the 401,405, and 421B in that list), will work fine, since they are all derivatives of each other, and run basically the same software.

alansh has the RGxxx boxes pretty well covered, I just opined on the origin of the brand name and the works of the box I heard about.

I just subscribed to RCN cable and they gave me a Quanta QCR2221 box. Has any one used this box? I have tried using a Motorala channel code, 10006-medium and an RCN tech has suggested using 10042-medium. I had Tivo set up to record and this morning I found out the box had been switched off. Also, the RCN channel banner seems to come up randomly and it looks as if the Tivo box randomly tries to change the channels. I am using both Tivo-provided IR emitters with no "tent".

I finally got some help from RCN on getting the Quanta QCR2221 box to work with TiVo. They sent me a .pdf file with information they've gathered to help out us TiVo peeps.

First, they recommend placing only one of the 2 IR blasters on top of the cable box, adhered to the box and "protruding prominently" (as far out front as possible). They also recommended building an IR tent.

During guided setup, they recommend using 60601, 60062, or 60661 for the zip code. For the cable box brand, they say to choose Motorola. They say use IR code 100042 at medium speed.

This set up has actually worked very well in the past few days. I haven't even set up a tent yet and it's working fine so far. My only complaint/problem, and I don't know if they can ever address this, is that whenever you push any button on the TiVo remote, TiVo sends a signal to the cable box and the channel information banner pops up. So if you're doing something with the TiVo buttons while something is recording, when you go back to watch the recorded show, the banner pops up during all those times you ever pushed a Tivo button. This is extremely annoying, but at least the channel is changing properly for the recordings.

I hope this information helps. This is the latest info RCN has.

One more thing. The .pdf file does not mention this, but I have found it to be true. When setting up your channel changing preferences, you have to specify that you have a 2-digit cable box, NOT a 3-digit cable box. I know it makes no sense, but it works, even for recording 3-digit channels.

Yes, you're right - for the Vortex View box the code is 10017. I must have omitted the first digit in my posting. Code can be found under "Orbit" in the set up list. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I really appreciate the thorough job you did organizing this material about channel changing which is so critical to Tivo users.

I have a Motorola DCT2244 cable box (although it's branded as a General Instruments box) and I have a Series 1 Tivo box. I recently experienced the "unable-to-change-to-channels-with-6-in-them" problem.

As you recommended, I switched to IR code 10006-Medium, and voila, the problem was solved! Without your help, this "phantom" problem might have driven me nuts!

Where you (or others) able to figure out a working IR code or Serial/RF solution for the Samsung TS360? I've tried the 10069, which works really fast (regardless of speed setting) but it frequently fails to input the first number. I've also tried the 10068 but it fails to press the enter button after the numeric input so it takes about 7 seconds to change the channel. I also called Tivo where I was pretty much told there was nothing they could do for me.

As noted in the main post, one of 10068/10069 is slow and the other is unreliable. Serial should work if you run it through a computer and write a program to translate the codes to the Crestron protocol.

I don't know if any has tried the fast, unreliable code in combination with an IR tent/fort. It's possible the first digit is being dropped for the same reason as Motorola cable boxes, which get confused by the IR coming from the TiVo remote.

Is the first digit often dropped even when TiVo is changing channels itself for a recording? Or is the first digit only dropped when using the remote to change channels? If the latter, definitely try the IR tent/fort.

Well the digits getting dropped is completely random and sometimes it's one digit, sometimes two and sometimes it works just fine (rarely though). I have tried every code, setting up fort, etc. I have the cable plugged into IR, not serial. I'm pretty sure I can see the IR sensor. I have tried various configurations of the IR emitters, left/right, up/down, closer/further... nothing.

I am beginning to wonder if the tivo is even sending a signal at all. Is there a way to confirm this either way?

Motorola boxes seem to work best with the emitter taped to the front of the cable box directly over the IR sensor. The Xantech stick-on IR emitters seem to work particularly well (better than TiVo's IR emitters) for DCT2000 series cable box owners and might be worth a try.

TiVo waits until there is no stray IR before sending the channel change, probably because stray IR causes popular Motorola cable boxes to change channels incorrectly.

The serial port is another way of changing channels. You get it activated by complaining to the cable company to get it activated. If the cable company doesn't know how to activate it, there are instructions for cable company personnel in the main post on what they need to do to activate it. If they lie and say it doesn't work with TiVo, I don't know—maybe ask if you can record their answer so you can file a complaint with the government for purposely giving out erroneous information to damage another company???

They were very helpful, surprisingly. I basically told them that I needed a box that supported digital sound. They told me to take my box to the local service center and they MAY have a different box. I took it down, they did have some different boxes so we did a little swap. Completely painless.

I have tried all of the channel codes, including the EchoStar 10001-Fast code recommended for the Dish 322/522 in the Cable/Satellite Box Compatibility & Codes List in this forum. Nothing works. Does anybody have a suggestion?

This was posted back in March, but I never saw a solution posted, so thought I'd post the solution I found to the Myrio box:

Choose "I3 Micro" as your cable box, then Code 10073 from the code choice list. Worked fine for me.

Good luck

Marketed by "Myrio" (their logo is on the remote), and manufactured by i3 Micro of Sweden. Tiny little silver unit with a large opaque blue plastic swath across the front, no clock or channel indicator, just 3 really bright blue lights...

Do I need some kind of euro code, or perhaps a different freq. ir flasher?

TiVo suggested codes from Scientific Atlanta, General instruments, and Next Level Communications, none worked...

Thanks for looking,

hello, I just got the new Directv reciever D10-200 to enable me to receive local channels. I am trying to conect my Tivo series 2 to the receiver. I have everything working except the ability to change channels. I can use the IR wiring to change the channels but I have purchased the home control wiring from Tivo and have it in the serial output on the Tivo and the slow data port on the receiver. I am unable to change the channels. Is there a setting on either the Tivo or the Directv receiver I need to change. Thank you in advance for your help with this frustrating problem.

The TiVo does have a menu setting that controls the Serial output.
TiVo.com How To Setup Serial Control (http://customersupport.tivo.com/knowbase/root/public/tv1155.htm?). Select "Serial Cable with APG" this tells the DVR your receiver has an "Advanced Program Guide".

EDIT: As of sw upgrade 7.2 this setting is not visible to the user. 7.2 will detect what type of receiver you 're using automatically.

Did you ever end up using an IR tent to see if the TiVo remote was causing that banner to pop up?

Added info from ClearToLand and TiVo on the various DirecTV D10 receivers.
Emphasized that enter key option must be Yes for Samsung SIR-TS-360.
Added warning that attempting to connect to a set top box's IR port can damage both the TiVo DVR and the set top box.

I didn't have a DirecTV receiver when I received my Pioneer 810 so I used my Sony SAT-T60 TiVo with the Pioneer 810. I used the last code in the Sony list (High) with the Enter Key set to "Yes". Works Great...

Since I use my Pioneer 810 mostly as a recording/burning station, I haven't needed to change this setup and I save $4.99 a month since I don't need an additional DirecTV receiver with the 810.
Note: I haven't been able to find a code to work with either the Philips DSR6000 or Hughes GXECBOT and the Pioneer 810. Per Pioneer Tech Support, they have been told by TiVo Inc. that none of the above TiVo's will work with the Pioneer 810 (but the Sony SAT-T60 does).

Also, I use the Sony SAT-T60 to research programs that are beyond the 3 day Basic Service limit of the Pioneer 810. BTW, I have 4 Series 1 TiVo's including the Sony SAT-T60 that I pay a TOTAL of $4.99 to DirecTV for the TiVo Service so I can't image paying $12.99 a month for JUST 1 Pioneer 810 to get the same TiVo Service (TiVo Plus).

No, what is actually happening is that the cable box is showing that it IS changing but the channel is not on the screen at all, it stays on channel 4. I called TiVo for support, and they said I had to call Toshiba and Toshiba was closed.

I am just curious if it has something to do with the cable box I have, or maybe Im just lost and have something else I am doing wrong.

For Series2 TiVo DVRs, first, try using serial if the cable company has enabled it following the TiVo's article“Changing Channels on a DCT2000 Series Cable Box Using the Serial Control Cable (http://customersupport.tivo.com/tivoknowbase/root/public/tv031120.htm)”. Although serial might not be any more reliable than optimally configured IR, serial is very easy to setup; whereas achieving the best possible IR configuration is not easy with these particular boxes.

Wow Charles, thanks for the post.

Comcast just replaced my box with a DCT2224/1362/ACDE because the higher channels wouldn't come in. I was (and still am) having a problem with the IR Blaster dropping the first digit (and sometimes even the second and third).

I got my TiVo about a month ago. I'll try building the "fort" and if that doesn't work I'll try the serial. It looks like a 24 pin. Does anyone know if 9 pins were on older or newer models? I believe my TiVo box just came with a 9 pin.

DISH PVR 501

I am new to the forum and this is my first post. I looked for the PVR 501 and didn't see it, so thought I would add it to this list--which is great, by the way! :D

Codes that I found worked like a charm are:

10001 Fast (also Slow and Medium)

10011 Fast (also Slow and Medium)

10043 Fast (also Slow and Medium)

Hope this helps someone!

I have read through the entire thread (phew!) and haven't seen where you can directly enter codes with a series 1. I called both TiVo and Sony, but got shrugged shoulders about how to do this. They both directed me to this forum, but couldn't tell me how to use any code other than those in the Series 1 box list.

Am I missing something here, or are all of these posts for Series 2 and I'm stuck with the Series 1? I went from Dish to Cox with Scientific Atlanta boxes that are not listed in the Series 1 list. Nothing seems to work.

Hi all!

Any new developments getting Tivo to change channels on a Zenith HD SAT520? I read all posts to this thread, and cannot find any successful codes for this receiver. Can someone point me in the right direction? Sat recevier has no serial control, I have tried all zenith codes, have 3 different working IR emitters. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much!

All TiVo models should have the same IR codes for cable/satellite boxes, whether they are Series2 or not.

If you don't see an option to select an IR code, you've probably told the TiVo DVR you are using cable without a cable box. In that case, you will need to repeat guided setup and tell the TiVo DVR you now have cable with a cable box.

If you have a Scientific Atlanta model not listed in the main post, please post your model number in a separate thread, and I and others will investigate.

Ah, but you don't understand my issue with the Sony SVR2000 version of TiVo.

I get the IR list, but the Scientific Atlanta 3250 Explorer is not on the list. You have a code listed in your sticky post. How do I program that code in? Other than scrolling down through hundreds of models to find that same code for another box?

There must be a way to use the TiVo button along with the power button to directly input the code the SA 3250 Explorer needs.

So, if it's not on the list then my TiVo doesn't work with it? I doubt that. However after talking with TiVo and Sony customer support, neither knows how to program in the code you state works with the SA 3250. Nor have I found that information here, as well as the TiVo or Sony websites.

Mine only has a list - you either select slow medium or fast.
So no 3250 Explorer under Scientific Atlanta, therefore nothing near the correct code.

But the TiVo DVR does have a list of IR codes for Scientific Atlanta cable boxes, which is all you need. Once you have selected the Scientific Atlanta menu item, select IR code 00018-Fast in almost all cases. If 00018-Fast is not visible on the first page, keep hitting the down arrow until you see more IR codes.

Help! We just got Tivo for Christmas and have been enjoying it. This past week we received messages saying Tivo was unable to access the phone line to get program information. We checked all the phone lines and kept trying to reconnect for a period of days - nothing. Yesterday Tivo sent a message that it cannot access the phone line so we lost all the Season Passes, etc. Now I cannot get it to work at all. Called Tivo Customer Service. They said since we have Optimum Cablevision for our phones and internet, we should either 1) create a home network system or 2) every two weeks take the Tivo machine to a neighbor with a regular phone line to program it. Does this sound ridiculous to anyone else? I inquired how to set up a home network system, but the technician didn't know how. My computer is in my office on the other side of the house from my Tivo. Anyone have any useful suggestions? I'm missing my Tivo ) :

I have the RCA DRD486RH (its firmware was last updated September 2004). My TiVo is the Toshiba RS-TX20 Series 2 DVD recorder.

After using the IR blaster for a couple of days, the serial cable that I ordered from TiVo finally arrived. It works faster than IR. I configured TiVo's settings to use serial with the AGP mode. It works great!

Another nice feature that I noticed with the serial cable is: if my RCA DRD486RH happens to be off, and my Tivo sends it a channel change command, it causes the RCA to turn on automatically. The serial cable is definitely worth it!

Greetings all ! Let me start by saying what a great resource this board has been to me.

I have tried to find the answer to the following with success thus far. I have a Hughs HTL-HD STB connected to my Series 2 Tivo. Using the serial control cable, the Tivo controls the STB just fine. However, if I change a channel using the STB remote, the Tivo becomes out of synch. The Tivo still thinks the STB is on its original channel.

There is a feature on the STB for "VCR Control" but there are many codes not one of which is Tivo. Has anyone found a solution to this ?

Cheers,
Tony

[edit: I should have mentioned... Enter key: NO]

Well, my old Sony bought the farm with the LNB power suppy and they say I have to send it back to Sony since the parts are "no longer available", bought an H10, but don't have an HD to connect it to....whaaaaaa! Hey, just thinking ahead though...

Here's the question though, the old Sony remoted my stand alone Tivo (now a Humax DVR) thru the serial, since I hate that IR blaster...thought I had read somewheres that the H10 could use the low speed data port in the same fashion, so that solved my problem, or so I thought...I'm finding that I have to use the IR blaster, since it's not seeming possible to use the data port to remote the Tivo...

My install is older, not using a multiswitch to each set, so I was using the Sony's RF remote to run the upstairs set. But, the H10 is either IR only or RF only, so I can't just set the H10 to the Blaster, then change it to RF to use it for upstairs....

Anyone see anything I can do, to get back to using a serial connection to remote the Tivo? Of course, I *could* buy the DTV/Tivo, since they just dropped the $ by 300...sigh! But, that of course would mean buying yet another lifetime Tivo service contract..and yes, I know when I finally GO to a digital set, the Tivos I have will be unusable...lol!

Just thinking.....for now....

Thanks....

Just an update on the controlling of an EchoStar Model 3000. I still find the best results with: 10001-Slow, and my trial with a Xantech blink IR emitter has been awesome. We record about 8 shows a day and in the year plus we have had this emitter we have only missed one channel change (and that could have been a power interruption or something ... was not home). I hope this helps anyone out there that is having a hard time with the IR emitter "arms" like I was. Happy TiVo-ing!

Didn't see anything about the Hughes SD-HBH DirecTV receiver on this list, so I thought I'd share my experiences; most of the Hughes codes work intermittently, but 10020-Fast seems to give the best reliability. Just spent about 10 minutes changing channels and haven't had a dropped change yet, whereas the other options I tried dropped 1 out of 10 changes.

I saw a post on the forum by a person in Baltimore that Comcast is disabling the serial port on Motorolla DCT 2524 units. I just got a new one in another part of Maryland and can confirm it is also disabled. After getting the run around for about 30 minutes on the phone, I was told a technician enabled it... but if I ever turn off the cable box I will lose the feature. As it turns out, it was never activated anyway (either they were confused, made a mistake, or lied). So I can also confirm 00093 and 10006 are both working IR codes.

I recently bought a Motorola DCP501 unit. It has an integrated DCT2000 series cable box.

I've had success with the following setup:
Standard TiVo IR Blaster on top of unit, aligned with the "P" in the Model number on the front of the box, sticking out about an inch
Code: 00093, Fast
Enter Key, doesn't matter - it won't go faster either way

I've had this running for a few days, and I haven't missed a channel change yet.

Sorry this last update took so long to do. Sometime after this board's vBulletin update, it developed a problem where it was rejecting all updates to the compatibility list with a SQL error, possibly because it has grown so large and complex. Problem is finally fixed now.

Well, does Tivo every update their IR codes? Is there a chance they might include IR codes for the 921 & 625 DVR's.

I got the DVR 625 just because it was only $5.00 extra a month...but I hate the thing. It's so complex to try and get it to record

I know it's a Dish DVR...but bear with me...I have a reason. Surely this DVR unit uses some of the same ir codes other Dish receivers use.

i have a Dish network 625, and my tivo has a code that works with it. of course it doesnt always work...

The new TiVo 7.2 software includes a "proactive channel check" that may cause problems for your D*TV receiver. My Hughes HTL-HD no longer works with serial control, but it is capable of working with IR control.

Added note that owners of HTL-HDs and similar receivers will lose serial control capability for now with 7.2.

I'm racking my brain trying to find the code for a clearmaster 9000 cablebox.

Any ideas? Has anyone ever heard of this brand and model or am I the only person with one?

thanks.

Added suggestion to turn off the DISH 322 daily updates with link to the procedure.

GI have tried to find the answer to the following with success thus far. Is it out of synch for all subsequent channel changes or just up/down channel changes?

OK, so here is where I am now. I have repositioned the IR emitters so that they are as far out as possible (one on the top, and one on the bottom). I have built a cover out of thick construction paper and installed it over the emitters. It seems as though I am getting a MUCH better success rate on 3 digit channel changes. I have had some failures, but not like before.

I have attached photos to show what the covers look like in case anyone wants to copy my design (no copyright :D )

Thanks again for all your help. Now I will wait until either D* changes their firmware or TiVo writes a fix for the protocol.

BTW - The info I got on the receivers that will lose serial capability with 7.2 are:

Hughes HTL-HD
LSS 3200A
Sony SAT HD300

After trying all the cable box codes it is apparent that the clearmaster 9000 is incompatible.

Well, the code that someone gave me that works with the Dish DVR 625 is 10043. So far, it has worked fine.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I don't think TiVo supports aftermarket cable boxes.

I've noticed that v7.2 adds four digit support. I ran through the channel changing 'wizard' and it's working great for my SA4200's. Looks like it's using 4 digits, no Enter and fast speed. Previously I was using 3 digits with an Enter.

What codes are people using for the DCT6412. I'm having trouble getting it to consistently tune to the correct channel after trying multiple different codes. Thanks in advance.

So the 7.2 Tivo software fixes the problems with the D10-100? This is isn't mentioned in the compatibility list under the Thompson D10.

Does anyone have any technical details as to what changed to break serial control compatibility with the Sony HD300? Maybe I could reprogram the TV Translator to fix it.

I am one that has been having trouble with the channel changing since updates to 7.2xxxx. I have the Hughes HTL-HD D* receiver and the serial port was disabled. I changed to IR and had >90% failure. I built a tent and reduced the failure to about 10%. I have now purchased and installed Xantech 282M Infrared Mouse IR Emitters with the MS1 shield and while I have not exerienced a change in failure, it looks much better.

I purchased the emitters on eBay here: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Xantech-282M-Infrared-Mouse-IR-Emitter-MS1-Shield_W0QQitemZ5813666673QQcategoryZ50587QQssPageNameZWDVWQ QrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Ordered them on 9/22 (late in the day) and they arrived on 9/28. Not bad at all and shipping was only $3 for 4 of them.

Does the 7.2 software no longer work correctly with the Sony HD300 via serial? I was considering buying one of these receivers as I upgrade to HD, but if this no longer works and have to use the IR, I may just consider going to the Directv HD/Tivo receiver. I would rather be able to buy the HD300 unit. I had put a lot of research into this unit, and was going to be my main purchase. But sounds like I'll have to scrap those plans thanks to the Tivo developers.

The HD300 is one of the receivers that had the serial connection disabled as a result of v7.2xxxx . The only problem with the DirectTV HD receiver is that, to the best of my knowledge, it will not support MRV, TiVoToGo or Home Media.

This is a 37" Westinghouse 37" LCD monitor. Anyone find a working code for this model? No, 0067 does not work.

TIA.

I hope I'm not posting this in an inappropriate thread, but I've been unable to find my answer so far.

I have two tivos (and two cable boxes) hooked up to my PiP tv. Most of the time things are fine, but for some reason on occasion when one tivo is changing the channel to record something, both cable boxes switch to that channel. Result -- 30 minutes of Charmed followed by 30 minutes of the HBO program I'm trying to record on the other tivo. Anyone know how to fix this? One box is Scientific Atlanta 3250, the other S.A. 2200
