My newest bill from Comcast came in the mail today and I noticed one of my promotions had ended this cycle, leaving me at $168/month for cable and internet. I'm a full-time law student and, to be honest, I don't have that kind of cash lying around, particularly when I'm rarely at home to watch my TV anyway. So, I started thinking about my options. I called Comcast and they were able to get me down to $120/month with expanded cable and 12 mbps internet. That is still more than I want to pay. I have Uverse as an option in my area, but I just can't say goodbye to my TiVo. I love the intuitive interface (even though I'm not even on the new Premiere UI) and the accuracy of the fast forwarding.
So I'm thinking about ditching cable all together and going just to streaming, but I'd appreciate some input on what sort of supplies you might recommend for someone in my situation.
I'm 24, female, single (so no one else to get onboard my cable cutting plan), no kids needing entertainment, and never watch sports or news. My shows are Doctor Who, Family Guy, American Dad, Big Band Theory, Gossip Girl, and Hart of Dixie. I will also watch HGTV and DIY network; I'm worried I'm going to miss those if I cut the cord, but both have episodes for free online. I'm not really a movie watcher, but Redbox is always an option.
My Current Supplies
Two TVs (1 HD - living room, 1 not - bedroom)
1 TiVo HD (in the bedroom; Comcast HD receiver in living room)
Netflix subscription (streaming only)
2 DVD Players
Ancient PC (running XP)
I know I need to buy two HD antennas and an additional TiVo box as well as a wireless receiver for the new TiVo. I was thinking about dropping my subscription to Netflix, as I rarely watch it, and going with Amazon Prime instead for the unlimited streaming. And really, I'm only thinking about Amazon Prime for the upcoming season Doctor Who, since the new episodes aren't available (legally) online or on Netflix (shortly after they come out) or Hulu Plus.
I see a lot of people have Roku boxes in their setups. Is this primarily for sports? What would be the compelling reason to add this to my setup? I know it streams, but can't I do the same thing with my Wii and my TiVo(s)? I'm trying to cut my costs, and while I know there will be some start-up costs associated with cutting the cord, I'd like to keep them to a minimum.
As far as Premiere, if I'm perfectly happy with my HD as far as space goes but am sort of enticed by the fancy Premiere UI, could I get by with a used Premiere, do you think?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions and help!
That was pretty good. A little bit schmaltzy and on the nose in parts (the whole life flashing before Carter's eyes, for one), but still ultimately pretty good. And they managed to keep Eureka open, like people wanted... so ultimately, although some people are gone, life there goes on. :)
The cameo from Grant Imahara was a little too obvious, if you ask me. They should have had him in the background of some other scene with him complaining at DoD movers, or something like that. The Paglia storefront was similarly a little too obvious.
Did James Callis (Trevor Grant) sound odd to anyone else? It definitely didn't sound like his previous American-ish accent.
I'm glad they remembered the Zoe/Carter seeing themselves from the pilot.... and personally, I'm glad they just included it as a reference, they didn't focus too much on it. It was never supposed to be a serious plot point, it was just one of those wacky Eureka things, which is how they treated it here.
I have a working Premiere/CableCard/TA setup. I have a new XL4 and I just picked up a new CableCard from Time-Warner but they were out of Tuning Adapters and won't get any for several days. The self-install on the card went fine so I get the non-SDV channels. Can I connect my existing TA to the new XL4 or is it paired with that particular CableCard?
Always good to see Ruby Jean. :)
Interesting episode. I am enjoying each of the stories. Could have used a lot mor Pam, though.
We don't know the woman who seconded for Alcide, do we?
Oooh Hoyt - what a mess. Poor guy!
And wow!! I'd expected to get a lot more from Meloni. :(
Super sad about that. And rarely without a shirt. What a tragedy. ;)
I can see the annoyance at Terry's story - but if it brings LaLa back to a good place, then it will be worthwhile.
TiVo S3 (TCD648) with Lifetime and 1.5GB
I have two of these available after upgrading to the Elite.
Both have been upgraded with Western Digital AV-GP WD15EVDS drives, which are AV drives designed for quite 24/7 DVR use. They were configured with the optimal idle settings.
I have the original hard drives for these units and will include them as well. I've inspected the power supplies for "bad caps." I found and replaced a single bulging capacitor on each unit. While the bad caps didn't seem to affect performance, I replaced them anyway both units still work great.
One has light surface scratches on the top case, and the other has some deeper scratches and a swirl mark on the case.
One will come with the original box.
One has the original remote, while the other has a later GLO remote. I think my dad "borrowed" the other original remote, which I can try to get back if necessary.
I only have one set of spare component cables, but I can include an HDMI cable if you need one.
I'm asking $375 shipped each. I can make arrangements for local delivery in the Austin or greater Central Texas area. Pictures are available upon request.
I watched seasons 1-3 via netflix a frew months back. I enjoyed reading through the threads on here as I watched. I noticed there were far fewer episode threads from season 3 so I'm not sure if interest is dropping or not but I figured I'd throw out a starter and see who is still watching. I recall the new season catching folks unawares so if you like White Colllar-- note, the new season has started!
While watching it, I was thinking that perhaps the Island 'boss' may turn out to be so corrupt that Peter, Mozzie, and Neal could just take him down and play that it was all a pre-planned very covert sting that had been in play since the end of last season. But then the episode took a different turn so I don't really have a strong feeling about how or when they'll resolve the Neal-on-the-run-somewhat-with-the-help-of-Peter thing they have going right now.
I could certainly understand the appeal of living on that island with vast wealth. Made saying good-bye to NYC at least less painful I would say.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to watching another season-- it's a lightweight amusing story with likable characters.
I was a rabid Tivo fan until DirecTV formed me to their products. Now with this whole Viacom issue, I'm rethinking what I pay for TV. With a 21 month old, we don't watch much but we have some potential hangups that might force us to stay paying almost $1,500/year for DirecTV service. Yes, when you look at it like that, it's painful. Here are my questions:
1. If I get a Tivo Premier, I can tie into Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime (which I'm a member already) and Netflix. So pretty much we could subscribe to them all, have access to most all shows on demand. Anything about these services I'm blind to?
2. We watch a lot of HBO and sports on the ESPN networks. This appears to be the biggest deal killer to cutting the cord. We live in Little Rock, AR so we want to watch a lot of college football, including the Razorbacks. Almost all of their games not on CBS or ABC (the local affiliate carries some games via the "SEC Network") are all on ESPN. I have AT&T Uverse for internet, so I could get ESPN3, but I think they'll block out our games here in town. Can this be confirmed, and are there ways around this? Are HBO shows available to rent recently after their respective seasons are over?
3. Can you record anything on the Tivo besides OTA channels, which I would setup with an indoor antenna (thinking about the Terk HDTVa, unless you have other ideas)? Can you record on demand shows to skip over what ads there are? I doubt it, but thought I'd ask.
4. Does it make sense to get the Premier XL just for THX? That appears to be the only difference besides HD size, but I think given #3, I won't be recording much.
I appreciate any input you guys have. I think #2 will keep me from doing this, but I'd love to cut costs and have Tivo again!
I've had a persistent problem with guide data threatening to run out and I have to reboot every two weeks. I was gone on vacation for three weeks and my TiVo did run out of guide data. I rebooted, the guide data reappears and everything appears fine except the to do list shows "none scheduled" for all my season passes. I've tried rearranging the season passes. I've tried changing the number of episodes to be recorded. Nothing has helped so far. Does anyone out there have anything else I could try?
So its been a while since I'v been here, but my TiVo stopped working, whats up ?
I read an article from march sayingthe epg was turned of and an unoficial one was coming but I can't find it anywhere. Can someone point me inthe right direction ?
Current Premiere XL owner, now adding XL4.
Is there any way to extract the Tivo's settings (not Season Passes), e.g. setup information, audio, signal strength, etc? For example, our Denon AVR has a way to extract an XML file with all the settings.
If not, does anybody have a spreadsheet or text list of all entries that they would share?
The gut says that having such a record will make getting the second Tivo setup completed and system tested go as quickly/painlessly as possible.
Contemplating taking photos of screens as a last resort.
I have had a TiVo Premiere XL set to record 60 Minutes on a season pass (OTA) for months. Last night, TiVo failed to record it. The menu lists a partial recording of 3 minutes, however, that too is futzed. When I try to play the partial recording, it plays nothing, but goes directly to the menu where I am asked if I want to save or delete the recording.
Any ideas to explain this failure?
The episode sort by season for "House" is broken. Other TV shows have the Season listed by "1," "2," "3," etc. above the episode list. In the case of "House" there is no season number displayed, and no evident way to sort by season.
Not much going on yet. Interesting that Willie backstabbed Carrotop so soon.
Caught one of the new Virgin TiVo ads featuring Stephen Fry.
The one I saw focussed on the Search and Browse feature.
I think it is ironic that this is made much easier to use with the iPad TiVo app as you can enter text in the search field far easier on an iPad than using the TiVo remote and yet it is still not available from virgin.
Is Impractical Jokers on tru TV going to come back? When I first saw previews thought it would be stupid but after watching one was hilarious. Hasn't been on in a while they recently showed all eps in a row, thought that might mean season 2 was about to start but still not in guide.
which of the best directv tivo box that clarity and signal are good as well as service are fast
I am Bhumik here, join the forum just to make more friends and discuss about the Case Studies which we have the same or different opinion. You can call me Casestudy. Nice to meet you, my friends.
I was yawning through most of this episode but the last 15 minutes were chilling. In the words of Arnold, "I'll be back."
Did you recently unplug the power cord from the back of a TiVo and now when you plug it back in nothing happens?
Instead of bad capacitors, it might be that on one of the two places where the AC jack contacts are soldered to the circuit board the copper right around the terminal has broken loose from the rest of that trace.
It just happened to me on a 240 supply.
