bought on ebay

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 05/06/2012 - 19:21
I 'won' a Series 2 Tivo on eBay and received it yesterday. I was surprised that it was shipped in the original box, but with NO packing!! I couldn't believe it. It was just rattling around the box with the cords and such. And it still works and doesn't seem to have any damage!! Fortunately I have other TiVos that I can change out the hard drive it decides to fail with the rough treatment.

Oh, if anyone is irritated that I am commenting on a eBay purchase rather than mentioning a Tivo for sale, I do have a bunch of Tivos and other DVRs for sale. Does not include packing or shipping. Free pickup or possible delivery in metro Denver area.

Tivo Wireless G USB Network Adapter brand new $25
used $20.
other wireless adapters that work with Tivo $10.

TiVo Series 2 TCD540040 41HRS (TIVO BRAND NAME)Evaluation type of lifetime $60

Premier with Evaluation (this is version of lifetime that gives you all the advantages of lifetime service, but Tivo can takes it away at anytime) $300

I also have lots of Series 2 tivos without lifetime that I will sell for cheap.

$10 Series 2 Tivo single tuner without power cord or remote(this is for people that have a bad Tivo and already have the power cord and remote control and can trade in a bad Tivo). Requires subscription. $25 trade in for dual tuner Series 2 without remote or power cord(see above). U could use one of these to fix a Tivo that U have too. Like if U needed a power supply, hard drive or front panel.

$25 for Series 2 single tuner Tivo that will work like a VCR without the TV guide. No monthly fee required. These Tivos can be used like a VCR, but you don't have to worry about changing tapes all the time, and you don't have to pay the monthly fee to TIVO. The TV shows are recorded on a hard drive like you have in your home computer and you can access any show in any order and keep it as long as you want to watch it again later. And you can also pause, rewind, fast forward any show. Depending on the Tivo, you can use it with a convert er box so you don't have to pay any fees, or connect it to some cable or other TV content providers.

$50 for Series 1 Tivo with lifetime (the lifetime service is not eligible for transfer to a newer series 2, 3 or 4 Tivo)

$30 for Series 1 Tivo without service, but still can be used to record and 'time slip'. No TV guide available except with monthly payment.

Tivo Series 2 Dual Tuner 180hr DVR $55
requires monthly fee if U want the TV guide and all functions. Can be used without monthly fee if U want to do manual recording.(I have another DT Tivo for $20 that you must pay a monthly fee to use. )

Toshiba RD-KX50 DVD-R/RAM Recorder with 80GB Hard Drive - $100
this is like a Tivo digital video recorder, without having to pay the monthly fees. It doesn't have have a digital tuner, so you have to use a conv erter box if you want to watch antenna TV. It does have a IR cable jack to control a cable or other boxes like Tivo does. It also has a built in DVD recorder. It doesn't have a TV program guide like TiVo.
http://www.overstock.com/Electronics...6/product.html
has a picture of the unit. I am not selling them on overstock, I just am using their listing to show what it is like.

$85
Sonic Blue Replay TV DVR with lifetime and Commercial Advance feature, so better than Tivo in this one feature. No fees to pay every month.
ReplayTV
Model RTV 5160
http://www.retrevo.com/support/Repla.../280bh235/t/2/

These units are in excellent condition and works great. Many of them have lots of recorded shows on them already.

Tivo Series 2 Dual Tuner 180hr DVR $50
requires monthly fee if U want the TV guide and all functions. Can be used without monthly fee if U want to do manual recording.

$275 Philips HDD DVDR3576h/37 DVD/DVR recorder WITH digital tuner. You can use this like a T ivo but this doesn't have a program guide. Record TV to the hard drive or record shows on the hard drive to DVD. Fully functional and is in very good condition.
There are a few light scratches.
Best Features:
Ability to watch recorded video (on HDD or DVD) while recording another program.
Chase play -- ability to watch a program while it's recording. No need to wait until it's done
recording to start watching.
Set up to 36 timer rec. programs by date/daily/weekly/day-of-week.
Can set/change timer setting while it's recording.
Skip(>) and replay(<) buttons which you can preset (5sec 15sec 30sec 1min or 5 min)
(forget using fast forward/rewind. With these buttons you can skip through commercials in under 10 seconds every time). I set the skip at 1min and the replay at 15sec, works great!)
You can select multiple titles to copy/dub from HDD to DVD at a time.
Tuner can handle BOTH Analog NTSC and Digital ATSC (It's a QAM Tuner as well)
The analog NTSC tuner has the standard CATV channels 1-125. The digital ATSC/QAM tuner has channels
1-135 for both OTA (ATSC) and cable clear-QAM* (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) signals.
*QAM is not listed or promoted in the literature on DVDRs probably because the cable co's really don't
want people to know they can receive unscrambled digital channels in their basic analog cable subscriptions.
Also, cablecos are fond of MOVING their QAM channels around regularly and using other tricks to force you to rent their cable boxes on a monthly basis. DVDR mfgrs are probably sensitive to this and may not want users complaining to THEM every time cable companies play "hide-the-channel" games.
It stores the "resume" time for EACH recording on the hard drive! When you play a title from the HD you can choose to start from the beginning or from where you last stopped. GREAT!
Unit can be either on or off for timer recordings. No need to worry about when a program will start to be recorded.
You can be watching a pre-recorded program and it will record without you even knowing (a small rec HDD symbol
comes on the screen for 2 seconds, that's it).
You can copy a title that is larger than the DVD size from the hard drive. EXAMPLE You can copy a 3 hour recording
in SP mode to LP mode to fit on a DVD. No need for another player. (note: it will take 3 hours because it actually
re-records it).

Excellent condition Dual Tuner Series 2 Tivo with full lifetime service. Lifetime service can easily transferred to new owner with a simple quick call to Tivo. Includes Tivo wireless G adapter. This is a standard definition Tivo.

included in the package:

Series 2 Tivo with Lifetime Subscription
A Tivo Remote
A Tivo Wireless USB G Network Adapter AGO100
A Power Cord
A Coaxial TV Cable
A Composite A/V Cable (Red, White, and Yellow)
Original Owner's Manuals

This Tivo is in great cosmetic and working condition. Comes from a non-smoking home environment.

Free pickup in Denver Colorado. (shipping fees waived) Possible delivery in same area.
This Tivo has been upgraded to a 200 gig hard drive. Which gives this Tivo 217 hours of maximum recording time.
I will mail the Tivo with US Post Office Priority mailing because I have had other packages damaged with UPS or regular Parcel Post. It is more expensive, but they seem to handle the Tivo better. And that is important when you are shipping a hard drive. I have had hard drives damaged when shipped by other methods. Insurance is included.

You can watch one program while another is being recorded! This is a great feature of dual tuners. Or watch a previously recorded program while recording two other shows. These features may be limited by your programing provider though.

DirecTiVo iPhone Remote?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 05/06/2012 - 16:01
So I'm thinking of switching to DirecTV from my current cable provider. Since I will have to give up TiVo HD to do so, I am consider the new DirecTiVo they are offering. I was curious, is there any iPhone apps out there that will act like a remote control for it? I didn't see any support for it in the descriptions of the official iPhone TiVo app, but I wasn't sure if it just wasn't listed or if there was a 3rd party app that might support it instead. Thanks.

Newbie questions

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 05/06/2012 - 09:35
I am currently paying $16.00/month through my cable company (Suddenlink) for my HD DVR service/box. I don't like Suddenlink and cringe when I think that I am renting a box from them. They told me the only way to get rid of the box and still use their service was to get a Tivo box. I know very little about Tivo and I looked on Tivo's website, and it seems that I can get a subscription for less than what I'm paying for the Suddenlink's box, so I now need to find a box. I'm looking for something I can replace my Suddelink box with and I need at a minimum HD and something that records at least 2 shows at a time.

I'm a little confused about what the lifetime option is. Does that mean you don't pay a monthly charge?

If so, I'm wondering if I should look for an older box with lifetime service that can be transferred to me (if that's possible)?

And, I'm thinking that you can upgrade after a while if you have an older box and Lifetime, is that correct and how does that work?

Or, am I better off just buying a new box, no lifetime, and now paying the service fee?

Also wondering how this works if I have 2 tv's. Do I need 2 Tivo boxes? The 2nd tv only needs to be able to watch, no recording functions needed.

Any help/advice/input would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

my.tivo.com missing Now Playing, Season Pass, guide info

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 05/06/2012 - 08:54
I now have two Premieres in my house. One is an XL that's about a year old and the other is a new non-XL unit. I had this problem with just the XL before, but it wasn't as annoying as it is now that I have two Premieres. Both are broadband connected through ethernet, and both are on lifetime subscriptions.

Enough background--the problem.

About 9 times out of 10 when I visit my.tivo.com to see my todo list, search the guide or use the great my.tivo.com season pass manager, all that information is missing from the web site. Has anyone had this problem? Both are functioning properly except for this. Forcing connections doesn't correct it. It just seems to work randomly whenever it feels like working.

Has anyone seen this before? Any idea how to fix it?

Tivo premiere, slingplayer and placeshifting

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 05/06/2012 - 06:53
I have a TiVo Premiere and am thinking aout getting a Slingbox. I would be watching on my iPad 2, usually while traveling. However, I wouldn't always have a good internet or even 3G connection. I see in the previews of the Slingplayer for iPad there is a "record" button on the right side of the player interface.
So, here is my question: when i have a good connection, is it possle to "record" a program I have on my tivo to the ipad using slingplayer for later viewing, or is the only way to watch is with an active connection?

HDMI re-sync with each channel change?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 05/05/2012 - 22:47
Haven't had much time to play with my new XL4, as setup and cable card activation was finished only a handful of hours before we left for a weekend away from home. One thing I did notice, however, is that when I was channel surfing, my system had to re-sync the HDMI every time I flipped to a new station.

I have a high-end Onkyo preamp, with everything connecting via HDMI. The preamp sends video out to an overhead projector or a Samsung HDTV, depending on which I am watching. The sync issue appears to happen equally on both displays.

Basically, when I flip the channel, the screen goes black, the name of the input "Video 1" or something pops up for about 1 second, then the picture reappears. I have yet to actually see a problem with the system being able to find a good HDMI sync, but it is definitely annoying that it has to re-do it each time you change the channel.

This did not happen on my Dish Network box hooked up in the same way (VIP722). On there, the channel just changed, without the name of the input and the black screen showing up.

Any thoughts?

Just replaced primary drive, now lockups

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 05/05/2012 - 20:36
I have a TiVo HD with the original 160GB drive and a WD My DVR Expander external drive. The primary drive was failing (although it passed the SMART tests and I haven't hooked it up to the computer yet for testing). Instead I used PyTiVo to pull all the recordings I was interested in, un-paired the DVR Expander, then used winMFS to copy the image off the primary drive to a 1TB Seagate Barracuda drive. It booted up fine, although I first went to Live TV and it got stuck displaying live tv for a few minutes (i.e. the buttons were unresponsive, although it continued to display live TV). After about 3-4 minutes, all the button presses I used "went through" and it started responding normally. I figured it was just doing some indexing or something like that in the background.

I started pulling all the shows back from my PC running pyTiVo, and it seemed to queue them up fine. after about 30 shows queued, the last one just got stuck on "this will be transferred" and the buttons became unresponsive again. From the computer I could browse what was on the TiVo, but for about 10 minutes I couldn't do anything on the TiVo itself.

So is this normal or is something wrong? Is the TiVo just doing some cleanup and getting used to the larger drive, or did I pick the wrong drive to do this with? Please let me know. Thanks!

Can't get Netflix to work

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 05/05/2012 - 20:27
Got a sub to Netflix. On the Tivo I select 'Find TV, movies, & videos' > then 'Netflix' and although I have not told Tivo I have Netflix, nor vice versa, there is an "instant queue" with 5 movies there, but it won't play them.

I have no other options to do anything but try to play those 5 movies as far as I can tell. I see no way to tell Tivo what my Netflix account is either......

Video sharing is turned on. I can stream Amazon stuff no problem.

Losing Satellite Signal

Anyone in the SF bay area seen any issues regarding satellite signal?

We were away and all three of our hr10-250s lost signal and didn't record anything for 18 hours. It seemed to automatically fix itself. Just happened again a couple days later now for 5 minutes while I was home

After a while it cleared up and and I checked transponder signal quality and they were all about 80 with a lot above 90.

Only other thing would by my multiswitch is going bad but it's odd it is so intermittent right now.

Tivo Hd

I have a Tivo HD (not a premiere unit) the hard drive is crashing on it. I (thankfully) have an older spare hard drive that I can use as a replacement. It is a western digital wd1600jb 160 gig drive. http://www.wdc.com/en/library/sata/2879-001146.pdf That is the pdf spec sheet on the drive. I'm wondering is it ok to use this drive, and also what special things should I do to it when formatting it to be used as a tivo drive? Let me clarify that last part: I've heard rumors that drives can be tweaked during setup so they run a little better in a tivo. Any tips for a newbie?

Tivo Premiere File Sizes Shrinking after Cable System Upgrade

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 05/05/2012 - 17:00
I have both a Tivo Series 2 and a Tivo Premiere.

My cable company recently upgraded their infrastructure out of the 1980s and into the present day. But something strange has happened as a result.

My Tivo Series 2 is behaving exactly as it had been behaving before the upgrade.

But my Tivo premier is doing something I don't understand.

I often make redundant recordings with the two boxes- same recording quality (Best), and same length, channel, etc. Before the upgrade, the same recording on my Premiere would generally be about 10-15% larger in terms of file size than it's Series 2 counterpart. After the upgrade, an identical recording on the premiere will only be about 70-75% as large as the series 2 counterpart.

The recordings on the Series 2 seem to be about the same size as they've always been at a given length and quality. The Premiere recordings are only a little over half they sizes they used to be. I verified to make sure my default quality was set at "Best," and it is.

Another thing that may or may not be related: I often transfer the recordings to Tivo Desktop and then edit them with VideoRedo software. When I transfer from my Series2, the file behaves normally during editing. When I transfer from the premiere, the software has trouble syncing the frames on playback with the frames in the frame-by-frame navigation system. In other words, it won't show the correct picture in the navigator that it shows on the viewing module. It will also get stuck in loops where I can't advance or reverse the navigation more than a few frames unless I actually hit play. I have a feeling this will make no sense unless you use VideoRedo like I do. When I perform a Quickstream Fix, the video then begins behaving normally. The Sync issue (but not the navigation loop) used to happen sometimes before the upgrade, but it now happens every single time I try to edit a Premiere recording, plus the loop now occurs.

Strangely, I haven't noticed any significant loss of video or audio quality in the apparently undersized recordings. That being said, I'm not enough of a techie to necessarily recognize subtle differences. Could it be that my cablecard is receiving at a lower bitrate or resolution than my cable box? Or is this just a case where my Series 2 could be trying to record at a higher quality than the source is capable of delivering, and thus inflating its file sizes artificially?

As a point of reference, my Series 2 last night recorded an hour and 45 minute program at best quality at a size of 4718 MB. The Premiere recorded the same program with the same specs at 3400 MB. Before the upgrade, I would have expected the latter number to be at or above 5000 MB.

I talked to Tivo Support about this for a very long time, but the guy was pretty unhelpful. He kept obsessing over the fact that the Series 2 has an expanded hard drive, which isn't really relevant considering the file sizes haven't changed on it at all, and are consistent with what my prior, unmodified Series 2 was doing.

Also, he had me check the disk usage for the program referenced above. For some reason it showed up on my series 2 as 4.2 GB, but only .03 GB on my Premiere. This seems like a mistake- whether it just displays wrong on the Premiere or if there's something really screwed up with the internal workings of the thing. That's only like 30 megs, and yet I still have a solid quality 105 minutes of video out of it.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated. I just can't trust these small files to be high quality, even though they appear to be, without some understanding of why they're turning out that way.

Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 05/05/2012 - 07:33
For those of you who are fans of the late Robert B. Parker's detective stories (Spenser, Jesse Stone, Sunny Randall, etc.), the eighth Jesse Stone movie Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt will be broadcast in HD on Sunday May 20 on primetime CBS.

Teaser: http://www.imdb.com/video/cbs/vi273589017/

Unlike the first four films, the fifth through eighth movies are original scripts, not based on a Parker novel.

Tom Selleck reprises his role as Jesse Stone, the Chief of Police in the New England small town of Paradise, Mass. The stories are beautifully filmed in HD with a solid supporting cast that includes Viola Davis and Kathy Baker as deputies. The Jesse Stone novels are tight and stylish "police procedural" stories, fully adult in nature and well written. Jesse Stone is a complex character who struggles with an alcohol addiction, his feelings for his ex-wife, his demanding job, and a series of beautifull girlfriends. Tom Selleck is at least 20 years older than the Jesse Stone character in the novels, but I'll have to say he has been uniformly excellant in the first seven films.

No, these are not action films. Most often, Jesse fires a single shot in a scene near the end of the film.

If you missed the prior broadcasts these were the earlier films:

Stone Cold (2005, available on DVD)
Jesse Stone: Night Passage (2006, available on DVD)
Jesse Stone: Death In Paradise (2006, available on DVD)
Jesse Stone: Sea Change (2007, available on DVD)
Jesse Stone: Thin Ice (2009, available on DVD)
Jesse Stone: No Remorse (2010, available on DVD)
Jesse Stone: Innocents Lost (2011, available on DVD)

Note: If you want to catch up, view Jesse Stone: Night Passage first, as the novels were filmed out of order, and Night Passage is the series beginning, relating how a drunken Los Angeles homicide cop got his job after a painfull divorce.

For reference, the Robert B. Parker novels are:

Night Passage (1997)
Trouble In Paradise (1998)
Death In Paradise (2001)
Stone Cold (2003)
Sea Change (2006)
High Profile (2007)
Stranger in Paradise (2008)
Night and Day (2009)
Split Image (2010)

Don't forget to set your TiVo's for the HD broadcast, Sunday May 20.
