New Netflix app not streaming consistently

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Fri, 05/11/2012 - 14:46
I posted part of this issue in another thread, but I now have an official complaint to lodge against the new Netflix app.

Rather than letting you pick a resolution and get a sufficient buffer before it starts playing, the app appears to jump between resolutions depending on how much buffer it has. As a consequence, when you first start playing a movie, it's in SD (or worse), then it appears to jump to 1080i, then to 1080p/24 depending on the speed of your internet connection and the size of the accumulated buffer.

But here's the problem. I have my TiVo connected to the web via a powerline ethernet adapter that tests at a speed of 20/Mbps. Despite this, watching a movie on Netflix yesterday was unworkable, as the app kept changing resolutions (once every ten minutes or so), resulting in a loss of audio and video during each change and a blackout period of 10 seconds or more. The movie also seemed to skip ahead more than the 10 seconds during each blackout (i.e., it seemed to resume about a minute later).

The video quality was VERY impressive when I was getting 1080P/24. On my 100" rear projection setup, it looked like a Bluray, which is the highest praise I can give. But, despite having what seems to be a pretty good ethernet connection, I couldn't maintain the 1080P/24 stream.

I'm going to experiment with increasing my cable modem service to 50 Mbps, just to see if that solves the problem. But it really is a shame that such a good app seems to have such a significant design flaw. It really should pick a resolution and stick to it (even if it has to pause for buffering), as I think all other implementations of Netflix I own (AppleTV and PS3) do.

Hell's Kitchen - Season 10 (spoilers allowed)

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Fri, 05/11/2012 - 14:34
According to Eater Vegas, the winner of Hell's Kitchen Season 10 will be working at Gordon Ramsay Steak at the Paris hotel in Las Vegas (which opened in early May).

This isn't the first time an HK winner got a job in Vegas; the second and third season winners got jobs at Red Rock and Green Valley. However, this appears to be the first time the winner got a job at a restaurant on the Vegas strip.

Whew, not the season finale. I was afraid they were going to leave it like that.

I'm not sure why I still enjoy this show, but I do.

I really thought the chief was screwing with Alex. Nice that he wasn't.

I don't care for Owen, but I felt sorry for him when he said he was happy and then Cristina told him she's leaving.

I could care less about Lexie. Was she on the plane?

Yes, another "worth watching" thread!

I never even heard of this show but now I see promos for it. It seems to be in its third year!

What say you?

Well now we know why the Captain and the Cigarette Man got so nervous when Britten started asking around about "The Little Guy" back in the episode with that title.

We already knew the car crash was an attempt on his life by someone connected to the police, so him realizing it at the end had no shock value.

Feedback to Netflix on the new app

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Fri, 05/11/2012 - 10:11
Margret at TiVo has agreed to provide a list of comments directly to Netflix on things the user community would like changed with the current app. These need to be items that are controllable by Netflix (i.e., integral to their app). Therefore things like adding Netflix to the My Shows queue, etc. might not be applicable.

Please let me know what changes you would like to see to the new Netflix app.

I will start and modify the post as feedback is received in this message thread.

Requested changes to Netflix

1) Start the stream in 1080p24 for those users who have that video resolution selected. This would avoid the TV black-out as the output stream switches from 1080i to 1080p and the HDMI sync is renegotiated.
2) Make "Info" button display information on what a viewer is watching. Be as consistent as possible with the TiVo buttons.
3) Don't use the "Clear" button to exit the application. If possible, let it clear the status bar during playback, but if not, just disable it.
4) Provide a description of the next watchable episode when selecting a series from my queue. Currently it puts a description of the entire series, a random picture from the episode and a unfriendly label like "S3:E12". That isn't very meaningful. It would be beneficial to provide the name and have description of the episode. That would be more useful than a random still image for the episode, if space is a concern.
5) Play button should show progress, and not pause the program.

Anyone think we will see Spotify on Tivo? This is a really great service though there are problems with usage on some devices and their support is non (totally) existent.

The New TiVo Apps - Like Netflix

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Fri, 05/11/2012 - 09:33
I thought I would start another thread just to talk about the design aproach being used with apps on the TiVo. Nothing wrong with them, same apps used on every other connected device, but they just seem rather clumsly on the TiVo.

I would rather see applications like Netflix more seemlessly integrated - It seems to be less integrated now.

My perfect Netfix app on TiVo?
  • I would be able to add to my queue directly from TiVo seach
  • My queue would be presented to me as a folder in the NPL, and;
  • when I slect a movie to play it would work using the TiVo inteface, just as you would with an MRS stream...

This isn't what I expected, but definately what I would like!

I suppose this is a branding and "ownership" issue and not really a TiVo design decision - but I hate having to go into a different inteface for different content.

Thoughts? Do you like the Netflix app as it is? Would you rather see it more seemlessly integrated?

Wow, I loved this episode. My favorite group of clips was from the mental hospital. "Should I increase their lithium? No, not yet, I want to see what happens when I confiscate one of their pens."

So, what did everyone think about that?

Elena in transition, Klaus in Tyler's body, Alaric dead. Quite a lot happened in this one.

Elena chose Stefan. Good. Now I wish they would cut the triangle crap, but I know they won't. Will Elena blame Stefan for turning? Did Stefan or Elena know about the blood? Whose blood was it?

I know Photoshopgrl was happy to see Elijah. That guy is pretty cool.

My Comcast Rant

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 05/10/2012 - 20:52
Wow....I mean wow.....

Since Xfinity OnDemand is coming to Boston, I bought my mom a Premiere. She currently has Motorola/Comcast/Tivo and didn't want to give up OnDemand. I spent close to FIVE hours today on the phone with various Comcast reps trying to pair a cable card. I couldn't believe the incompetence all around. One rep even told me that the "M" in "M-Card" stood for Motorola. I explained that it stood for multistream and after spending several minutes looking it up he agreed. :D

I finally threw in the towel and called Tivo. They were super helpful and got Comcast on the line. The Tivo rep guessed that I had a bad card based on the the way the card was acting. I picked up the card from a service center. First I was told they didn't have any and when I started to look pissed off the woman was kind enough to look out back. She came back with just a card. There was no packaging or paperwork or anything. She just handed me a card. I am guessing it is one that someone else already returned because it doesn't work. They ended up scheduling a technician visit which is pretty ridiculous.

I have never felt so lucky to have Verizon FIOS. My two separate cable card installs went pretty smoothly despite one of the techs admitting to never have done one before. He was still able to get it working in about 20 minutes.

TiVo for android ?

I forget where it was or who made it but where can I get the app that makes m.tivo.com look bad ass ?

I was thinking of using the official app but I remember the one that overhauls the look of m.tivo.com people were saying is waaaay better.

On that note, thoughts on the two anyone ?

And there you have it....

The last episode of American Idol I watch this season.

I was so impressed with the class Hollie showed in her exit. Making her way to the other contestants giving them all hugs as she sang. Walking over to the judges, who beat her down most of the season, and shaking all their hands. All the while with a smile on her face.

I HOPE the final two are Jessica and Phillip
I HOPE Jessica can pull this off and win it all.
I HOPE that will happen but I won't hold my breath.

But I will find out by checking the threads and not by watching the show. I can't take the obvious bias of the judges relentlessly pushing Joshua on the viewers. Jimmy talking for the last few weeks about the album they will make with Joshua. Somebody keep track of the Joshua standing ovation count. I think we are currently at something like 14.

Quote: "Surviving a Car Crash":

There are few things Americans love more than their cars. The problem: our cars don’t always love us back. Every year in the U.S., car crashes take tens of thousands of lives and injure many more, costing us nearly $100 billion in medical care and lost wages. But now, innovations in medicine, psychology, engineering, and even the military are increasing survival rates. Surviving a Car Crash explores the technology that could reduce the biggest risk facing drivers today - themselves. I've been seeing ads for this and will be recording it tonight. Looked ok from the ads but I'm not so sure now given the description.
