TiVo HD Series 3 - Make Me an Offer

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 06/03/2012 - 14:50
I have a TiVo Series 3 (Model No. TCD652160). It is stock, I've never modified anything on it. Works great (at least it did last time I used it in July of 2011).

There is no subscription on it. It is in excellent condition -- no scratches or anything like that. Includes remote control, but no original box or manuals.

If you're interested, you can PM me, or email: claimtruth {at} gmail. I'm not sure what its worth without a subscription plan, but you can just make me an offer if you're interested. We can discuss payment method / shipping etc.

20/20 5/29/12: The Jubilee Queen with Katie Couric

I have a season pass for 20/20 and unfortunately, most of the eps have been crap for years and I delete most of them. It caught this one-off ep aired on a Tuesday (vs. the usual Friday).

You can watch the full ep below:

I started watching the beginning to see if I should bother watching the rest, esp. since I'd never been that interested in the British monarchy. Surprisingly, I'm already 50 minutes into it...

Just lost channel favorites list

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 06/03/2012 - 01:31
This is a series2, std def Philips unit. (I know I know, I'm about to upgrade) Was working fine earlier today, just turned it on and my favorites channels list is gone (which is really annoying). I did a reset and got the "can not acquire sat info" error. All the channels including local ones appear to be present, so not sure what that error is about or how it correlates to losing the favorites. Its running 6.4a01-2-101 but I don't know when that update occurred.

Any ideas?

ABC's The Glass House -like CBS's Big Brother

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 06/02/2012 - 22:24
Starts June 18th, unless CBS's lawsuit to block the show is upheld.

Any Big Brother fan's gonna watch this? I will check out an episode or two to see how different it is.

"LOS ANGELES -- CBS sued ABC on Thursday to stop an upcoming reality show that CBS claims is being developed in violation of its copyrights and with secrets obtained from the long-running reality show "Big Brother."

The federal lawsuit seeks an injunction barring ABC from continuing its work or airing "The Glass House," a show that will film and allow viewers to vote off contestants living together in a house.

CBS claims the show copies the formula used for its hit series "Big Brother," and that ABC has hired 19 of the show's former staffers to help make "Glass House."

The lawsuit also names two top "Glass House" producers and an ABC programming executive who worked on "Big Brother," claiming they are violating non-disclosure agreements and giving away secrets of the show to their new employers.

"In copying `Big Brother,' defendants have had an unprecedented and troubling degree of access to CBS's copyrightable expression, as well as CBS's protected trade secrets and other confidential and proprietary information related to the behind-the-scenes development, filming and production of `Big Brother,'" the lawsuit states.

In its lawsuit, CBS claims an unnamed ABC executive instructed others to try to hire as many former "Big Brother" staffers as possible to undercut its competitor.

ABC denied wrongdoing in a statement, calling the lawsuit meritless.

"The differences between `Glass House' and `Big Brother' are both fundamental and obvious," the network wrote in a statement, citing interactive elements, audience participation and new technologies.

It will be up to a federal judge to compare the similarities and differences in the shows and determine if CBS should be given an injunction and potentially millions of dollars in damages.

The lawsuit states many valuable elements of "Big Brother" cannot be gleaned from merely watching the show. The suit says the processes in which story lines are created and challenges are handled involving the filming of contestants around-the-clock are protected by the non-disclosure agreements.

"Many of the `Big Brother' trade secrets were developed because of the series' fast-paced schedule and unique format," the lawsuit states."

On demand plays 2 seconds then stops.

I'm having a problem with Comcast on demand on one of my premiers. On of the Premiers (the Elite) is working fine, the other one (the XL) can't play anything on demand. When I try to play a show it starts up for a couple of seconds then stops.

After it stops I can FFwd, skip etc and the timeline works, just the picture never changes. I can pick up from where I should have been watching on the other machine, so Comcast knows about what I'm doing on the XL.

I thought I'd seen a thread with a similar problem, but I can't find it at the moment.

Any suggestions? Or should I just call TiVo tech support. The XL was very reluctant to get on demand in the first place, I had to ring TiVo tech support and they had to do something, and on demand arrived sometime later. I haven't used the XL since then (we've been out of the country). So this is the first time I've actually tried to use on demand on that machine. (On the Elite it worked first time with no hassles.)

Two THR-22 bugs?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 06/02/2012 - 18:34
I'm seeing two bugs with the THR-22 that are really irritating and am wondering if anyone else has seen them:

1) Watching a show with nothing recording, the unit warns that that it needs to change the channel to record a show I have scheduled. It then changes the channel I'M WATCHING to do the recording -- but the other tuner is NOT IN USE! The old Tivo used to warn that it needs to change the channel on the tuner I am not watching to record a scheduled program, which was of course no problem. Or it would change the channel I'm watching if it had to record two programs at the same time, which is OK, obviously. When this bug happens I have to manually re-tune to the channel I was watching, and of course it disrupts the viewing. I cant imagine this bug is in there.

2) This one is UNBELIEVABLY annoying. We'll be watching live TV, and say the phone rings, so we pause live TV to deal with the call. When we finish up with the call, we go to unpause the Tivo and it WON'T UNPAUSE. You have to change the channel up and down to get the show back. But when this happens, if you try to pause again, it will get stuck again and won't unpause. You can also see that no buffer is stored (obvious if you leave it paused for several minutes -- there is no buffer indicated on the timeline) Sometimes, if I change to the other tuner and tune the channel there, pausing and unpausing works again.

I'd like to know if anyone else with a THR-22 has seen these issues. Overall the unit works great but when it does this stuff, it's a royal PITA.

not getting all channels on new cable card

I just had a cable card activated this morning in a premiere and it's not getting all the channels I pay for? How do I check if it's a cable card or an account or a signal issue? I get some digital basic the local sub channels.

Results call tidbits: Web Portal

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 06/02/2012 - 17:57
I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere. Buried in TiVos latest results conference call Rogers mentions a TV anywhere web portal targeted at MSOs.

http://seekingalpha.com/article/6273...all-transcript
Quote: In addition, we will be launching our TV Everywhere web portal for operators in the near future, allowing them to offer content both in and out of the home on the iPad, on a computer or a connected device. This will allow the operator to make sure there is a common interface and thus common experience across all the devices a consumer may want to use to access their TV content. I wonder if the Stream could enable such a feature for retail TiVos.

Looks like RCN will roll out later this year.

Quote: RCN is planning a new TV Everywhere portal that will allow subscribers to watch video over an Internet connection on a variety of devices. Initially, the operator will present thousands of free on-demand titles, including a broad range of movies and TV episodes, before rapidly increasing its offering.

According to company officials,RCN's TV Everywhere portal will be deployed in phases beginning later this year; additional details about the implementation or financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

built debian server to host tivo hd recordings, next steps?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 06/02/2012 - 16:47
Woo hoo!! Installed debian on my new home-built off a usb drive (that was a challenge in itself); everything's cool! In fact I'm writing to you now from Iceweasal on the new server.

I know I'd like the server to run headless and I know that involves running xdmcp to allow me to bring up the desktop remotely, say on my windows laptop; and I know I need to share the filesystem(s) on the server, but I could use a hint how to accomplish all that.

Meantime I'll keep digging.

Thanks!

RCN Tivo - N33 error and Firmware question

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 06/02/2012 - 14:13
Hey Everyone,

I just got a new RCN Tivo HD installed and I've got a couple of questions

1) Whats the latest firmware available for this unit? I tried looking it up on the Tivo site but nothing matched up.

2) I forced a connection and got an update to download, however on restart I got an N33 error. I looked this up and it appears to be a connection issue with the Tivo server? If that's the case, why would I be able to force a connection and get the DONE responses?

Thanks

Beware of Misbehaving non-TiVo Remote Controls

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 06/02/2012 - 13:52
My Series 2 started acting real flaky, not responding, then responding too much, to the remote control. Could not control the unit. Changed batteries - ng. Used remote from different unit - ng. Called tech support. Went through the whole "shine a flashlight for 30 seconds on the IR receiver" to reset it thing - ng. Diagnosis - bad unit and unit needed to be replaced. Tried to sell me one right then and there - no dice, just did not accept that out of the blue the unit was completely cooked.

Went to weaknees.com and did some research. Guidance was to locate ALL other remotes in the room and take batteries out. And guess what - the stereo remote was sending some signal "confusing" the IR receptor on the TiVo. Removed batteries from stereo remote - perfect, no issues, back to normal. No bad unit, no bad IR, no bad remote - just bad tech advice.

This very simple advice - look for other remote controls - should be part of checklist items for Tivo tech support. Very simple to do. Spoke to supervisor, specifically asked that the protocol be changed to include the advice to check all other remotes before trying to sell customers new units. Promised to do so, and to email me with confirmation that it was done. Guess what-still waiting for email. Weaknees provided other examples of IR interference (I recall mirrors being one of them).

So I avoided dropping $160 or so on a new unit that probably would not have worked anyway due to interference from the stereo remote control giving out bad signals. Bottom line: TiVo made a serious mistake on this, I wonder how often this happens, and no indication that its tech folks have bee undated on the checklist protocol that was promised to be revised. Very Disappointed.

Comcast now requiring equipment for ALL TV services

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 06/02/2012 - 12:35
I JUST got an Xfinity/Comcast notice stating that as of June 26th for my area (Atlanta), Some sort of Comcast equipment will be needed for ALL television programming through them. Either a cable card, DTA or digital box will be needed. Even for the local basic package (ch2-30). Therefore, no more being able to at least get some local stuff with just a straight coaxial connection.

I was gonna use an older lifetime Series3 (w/ no cable cards & strait coax) to just record some local HD channels. Then MRV the shows to 2 different Premieres. Looks like that basic plan now won't be possible.

With this recent announcement & the outlandish cable card charges Comcast is pulling on customers, they are REALLY making it harder for me to stay with them. AT&T U-verse is finally available for my location. I've not looked into them cause TiVos don't work with U-verse (& I have two lifetime TiVos), but I may still have to seriously look into them. Then maybe sell my lifetime TiVos on ebay. That or maybe just go to a straight OTA antenna & Netflix with my TiVos.

While this doesn't really pertain to me right now, I just realize too that this move is really gonna screw over a lot of people who are on a budget, don't have a DVR of any kind & just want local HD channels on their HDTV. Now, it will require they either get an HD digital box from Comcast (about $15-20/month) or go to an OTA setup to watch even any kind of local HD programming.

Verizon penalizing TiVo / CableCard subscribers

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 06/02/2012 - 10:27
Verizon is currently offering a multi-room dvr free for life as part of its 2YR TV, Internet, and Phone package (Triple Play). The free set-top box amounts to a savings of $19.99 per month. If one chooses a cable card, instead of the multi-room dvr, there is a cost of $3.99 a month. This amounts to a $23.98 penalty for selecting a cable card for this package.

This is a violation of FCC CableCard rule:

"Pay only for equipment you have. Your operator must give you a discount on any packages that include the price of a set-top box if you choose to use your own CableCARD-enabled device. FCC Rule 76.1205(b)(5)."

http://www.fcc.gov/guides/cablecard-know-your-rights

Verizon is appeasing CableCard users by automatically giving the alternative promotion, a $250 gift card. However, CableCard subscribers should have a choice between the discount or the gift card. The discount is obviously the wiser choice, as it is a long-term savings and surpasses the value of the gift card in the 11th month of the 24 month term (250/23.98=10.4).

If you have this package, you are considering it, or just don't think Verizon is playing fair with TiVo, file a complaint with the FCC at: https://esupport.fcc.gov/ccmsforms/f...orm_type=2000E

Series2 suddenly not working?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 06/02/2012 - 08:59
Hi folks,

I am hoping someone can help me out or at least point me in the right direction - I would definitely appreciate it!

I have a Series2 DT Tivo with Comcast cable and a cable box. I've had this setup for over a year, everything working well. A few days ago a number of the channels weren't working... so I decided to go through the whole Guided Setup process again. I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that my cable provider sent some of the channels in digital but a few were still analog (i.e., the "basic cable" channels - 2, 4, 7, etc.). So I had the splitter connected, etc... and again all was working.

Well, after repeating the Guided Setup a number of times I couldn't get things working. What's weird is that, even though I told the Tivo setup process that I DO have a cable box, it then summarizes the info later on and tells me I selected "no cable box". When I clearly didn't. BTW I tried bypassing Tivo and was able to get it working fine.

So then I called Tivo...and they said that for my zip code their info shows the cable is all digital. So that I should remove the splitter from the configuration and go through Guided Setup again, selecting the option to disable the dual tuner on the Tivo. So I did that, and rewired everything according to a single tuner setup.... following the directions here: hxxp://support.tivo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/97

At this point I repeated Guided Setup again....but no dice. :/ No picture at all. Really not sure what the problem is and could definitely use any pointers! I am far from an expert on this stuff, but not clueless either. Perhaps someone can confirm the connection configuration for me as well? As it's possible I have something miscabled... Note I have a VCR as well as a DVD recorder in the mix here too.. Composite connections, and RF coax (no component connections, no HD, no S-video, etc..).

Thank you much for any assistance you can offer!

Regards,

- Dave

Question about copy protection

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 06/02/2012 - 07:57
I've never owned a tivo but am considering it can do one important thing for me - copy programming from HBO to my PC. I have Verizon FiOS and able to go into the diagnostic menu to check and see what channels are protected and HBO is one of them. What I want to know if this is a sure sign that it will also be copy protected if I'm using a cablecard?

Yet another 6.2a to 6.4 horror story

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 06/02/2012 - 02:30
OK, so I gave in and updated my old zippered 6.2 Dtivo boxes to 6.4. Boy was that a mistake...

First I did it on one box, Got it to work, boots 6.4a but man, the box is so slooooooow. I do not mean regular Tivo slow, I mean unusable. So slow, it is not even capable of reliably sync up with the satellite. OK, after wasting a day trying to figure out what is wrong, I chucked it up to being a hardware issue - either drive dying or something else. So I stupidly updated the second one. That one turned out to be even worse. Also just as slow. But as a bonus, after a few reboots it is now stuck in a reboot loop, booting slowly into satellite dish type selection screen (???) with black background (???) and immediately rebooting. Telnet is not on long enough to get any debugging done, but before it died I noticed the load was steadily growing from 4 to about 10 (after which I lost ability to check)

I am so fed up with DirecTV and tivo at this point, I seriously question if this is worth the time and effort anymore...

Creating Auto-Transfers

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 06/02/2012 - 02:30
I am using TiVo Desktop 2.8 and have a Series2 and Series3. I am using eSet Smart Security 5.2.91 again (there was an issue with 5.0.95 and not detecting spam, so I had to try to find another program)

I noticed that after installing VIPRE my Auto Tranfers stopped working. So I was going back and forth comparing to what was on my server and the TiVos.

Is there an easier way? If so, please be so kind to share - heck, this is one of the greatest forums out there.

A decade has now passed since HBO took a chance on showrunner David Simon's grim vision of a decaying, desperate Baltimore and nearly half a decade since the iconic series ended and was enshrined as the Greatest TV Show Ever, taught at Harvard and Duke. I can't find a recent info on this so I figured I had better ask. Do I need to contact TiVo to reregister the TIVO under my name? By phone? This is my first TiVo so I don't have an account.

Does anyone support the THR22?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Fri, 06/01/2012 - 21:05
Firmware version 0192 is now out for test and still no idea when we can expect an update and what is in the update.

Ask DirecTV about the THR22 and they say TiVo has control of updates (and features - I don't buy that) and it's up to them. Also that TiVo has applied minimum man power to the THR22 to meet the agreement.

Talk to TiVo and they say ask DirecTV. Some articles and a bit of logic would make one assume the THR22 is very controlled by DTV. Why would DTV let TiVo compete fairly?

Anyway, does ANYONE know what the heck is going on with the THR22? Very frustrated.
