Comcast $10 HD technology fee

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 08/19/2012 - 14:06
I just noticed on my bill comcast started charging a $10 HD technology fee after I added there premier channel tier, where as when I was on there digital starter for the last five months there was no such fee. Is this right?

Advice on broke Tivo that I sold on ebay

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 08/19/2012 - 13:25
I am looking for advice, so possibly I am putting this post in the wrong forum.
I sold a Tivo on ebay and now the buyer says the hard drive is bad. I am wondering the best way to go. I could have them ship it back to me and fix it and sell it again, refer them to insurance, have them buy another hard drive and refund them some of the price, or move to Paris and change my name.

I like to ship Priority USPS but people don't want to pay the extra cost, so I went regular parcel post, and sure enough, the hard drive was damaged. It was insured.

The indication that the hard drive was bad was that the TIVO just stays at the starting up screen.

TiVo Desktop and Mac OS Lion firewall?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 08/19/2012 - 11:16
Running Mac OS 10.7.4 on my iMac, and using TiVo HD. I installed the TiVo Desktop version for Mac OS 10.6+ today and enabled sharing of a folder of photos on my Mac. My Mac shows up in the Music and Photos menu, but when I tried to connect, I got a "temporary problem" accessing the server. After clicking the Mac dialog to allow incoming network connections to the TiVo Desktop application, the problem persisted.

The Mac TiVo Desktop troubleshooting page on tivo.com names the programs that need to have incoming connections enabled. One of them is TiVoDesktop, which is enabled. The other one is TiVoDesktop.prefPane. However, when I navigate to TiVoDesktop.prefPane in the Security & Privacy>Firewall dialog, the name is grayed out so I cannot Add it to the firewall exceptions.

Turning off the firewall on the Mac solves the problem, so I can view the photos on my Mac. Trouble is, a person can't go around naked like that all the time. Anybody found out a way to open up the Mac firewall settings in 10.7.4 to allow TiVo Desktop to work?

Premiere and expander issue found and then solved

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 08/19/2012 - 09:24
I had researched about a year ago about adding the WD expander drive and noticed related comments saying that esata cable in the box was not suitable for some reason.
I went ahead and bought the drive and a spare esata back about a year ago. I hooked up the expander with the spare cable and everything went fine. I threw the unused esata cable from WD in my junk computer parts box. I used it a few times hooking up other external drives to my laptop and is always worked. Kinda odd, i mean it's just a cable. But i went with the comments and experences of the assorted forums and spent the few bucks just be safe and never plugged the WD into my Tivo.

Fast forward to about week ago, my dad was looking at getting the WD expander for his Premiere and I mentioned to him about the cable situation.
He went ahead and ordered the expander but didn't get another esata cable. i said ok fine lets try the new esata cable from WD.

No luck with getting dads Tivo to see the expander with the cable in the box.

So i grab the old WD esata cable from my junk box and it works first time with no problem.

When i get a chance i'll hook an external drive to my laptop with the new WD esata cable and see what happens.

last i heard, there is only one kind of esata cable.

But i guess it boils down luck on getting a cable from WD that will work with a Tivo.

Upgrading a new Premiere 4 Hard Drive

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 08/19/2012 - 08:15
Hello everyone! I have a new Premiere 4 on the way (75hr HD). Now you may wonder why I just didn't order the $399 one (300hr HD) instead of the $249 one (75hr HD). Well, maybe I should of but I like to build computers and do upgrades, it's the fun part of the hobby for me, plus I end up with a back-up drive. Anyway, after I get it all set up and cable card paired I want to put a 2TB hard drive in using jmsf. I know quite a few different model hard drives will work but what is the most desirable hard drive? Would it be the same 2TB drive that TiVo uses? What do you suggest? I'm thinking of ordering this one, Western Digital AV-GP 2 TB SATA II Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Internal Hard Drive - WD20EURS.

Changing M-Cards between tivos?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 08/19/2012 - 03:10
Hello! I currently have a Tivo HD with an M Card from Comcast. I just purchased the Premiere 4 tuner - can I change over the M Card myself or do you have to have the cable company come out to do it?

Newbie question about season passes

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 08/18/2012 - 23:56
Hello! I just got a TiVo XL4. One thing I'd like to do is always have the most recent episode of SportsCenter on my TiVo. Is this possible? The way the season pass seems to be set up right now, one (or X) episodes will be recorded. But then, once my quota is reached, new episodes won't be recorded until I delete the older ones?

Does this make any sense? I know it might sound like a distinction without a difference, but I want to play the "most recent episode" game with all my favorite sports and news stuff, so going through and deleting fifteen old episodes every day, I'd like to avoid if I can.

Premiere Streaming: Now I like it

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 08/18/2012 - 23:18
Ok, so my initial response to the MRV streaming of Premiere was "meh" because we never have a need to start one place and then move to another. On top of that, simple transfers were more than adequate if we wanted to record in the bedroom and then watch on the big TV in the living room. So then the Olympics come along and NBC arbitrarily sets the CCI byte on five basic lineup HD channels, two of of which are favorites (SyFy and USA). Why??? Anyway, so I get a second Premiere and discover that I can simply play the copywrited show on my other Tivo without transferring. I was concerned that my wireless G network would be too slow for HD but the only effect I saw was that the fast forward through the commercials always went at about one-click speed. Take that, NBC.

Boss S02E01 "Louder Than Words" OAD 2012/08/12 ***spoilers***

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 08/18/2012 - 21:39
Boss is back.

Good episode. I forgot how Boss is the most dark, character drama on TV. It's more low key with less action than Breaking Bad and has more knife stabbing in politics than Political Animals.

How about the doctor supposing to just forgive and forget and come back to Chicago. "That man is no longer on my team. I didn't know what he was capable of." Only because, as I recall, one intended victim killed him. The doc should just let bygones be and head back to her practice and take care of him?

I was really anticipating that somebody would shoot at Kane.

I say that Mrs. Kane was hit and is alive. Kane is way too calm in the previews than an Mare would be if he lost his, even estranged, wife. I rewatched but couldn't figure out who those sunglasses belonged to.

The BF won't be the shooter, even though they may go after him. That scene with him handling Mr. Big's assault rifle with laser sight was a red herring. as they say Kane has a lot of enemies.

I'm fuzzy on who Kane's old buddy is. Just a former detective? Would he be well known?

I was wondering what airport they shot that "O'Hare" scene at. I'd say it was PWK "Chicago Executive" but it doesn't have a radar dome. It might have been Gary, but ditto there. Joliet has one but it's the bigger weather radar.

TivoStream vs Slingbox

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 08/18/2012 - 21:03

Anyone familiar with the upcoming Tivo Stream box recently announced? Looks exactly the same as Slingbox, except slingbox iphone app cannot download programs to the iphone.

I am thinking about buying Slingbox HD-Pro for $200+, so want to make sure I make the right investment.

Any info very much appreciated.

TDC240 Blinking orange-green - No boot

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 08/18/2012 - 20:57
I was readingabout how some people got screwed by uying Tivos on fleabhay which had outstanding bills on them and folks couldn't activate them without paying up, so I just wondered if the one I just cannibalized taking out the bracket to instal my new drive into the other Tivo, and checked to see what the status of it was with Tivo. To my surprise I discovered that it was one of my own with lifetime sub on it. I bought several on fleabay way back. I forgot all about this one. I hooked it up, and the left light was flashing green and orange, but mainly orange. There was no video on the tv except one flicker right at the beginning. Disconnecting the hard drive didn't make any difference. Checked the voltage going to the hd and it was 5 VDC and 11.8 VDC. Didn't see any burned or smelly components. Re-seated the white ribbon cables. Did't clean the contacts with alcohol yet. I hope this box can be saved. Appreciate any and all help.

Has there been a solution to lost signal issue?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 08/18/2012 - 20:21
I am still losing signals on all channels quite regularly. It works perfectly fine after a reboot but I can't rely on it to stay that way. I think the lose of signal is somehow related to Internet bandwidth since it seems to go out after watching Netflix but I am at a loss.

Automatic transfers

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 08/18/2012 - 15:24
I have a garage apartment about 30 feet from my house. I am trying to find the best way to get tv to that apartment without having to run a second cable line and paying another monthly fee.

I have 3 tivos in my house and 1 version of tivo desktop. My son is moving to the garage apartment and wants to be able to watch tv.

I can put one of the 3 tivos (1 premiere 2 series 2) in the garage apartment with a wireless adapter but it will only be able to transfer shows from the other tivos.

Is there a way to set up automatic transfers to the garage tivo? (I know we can do automatic transfers to the desktop)

Can tivos download shows from the internet?

The Looney Tunes Show

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 08/18/2012 - 11:35
Greetings...long time lurker, first time poster!

I visit these forums fairly frequently, but have not been compelled to post myself previously. Most of the shows I enjoy are mentioned here regularly and I enjoy the lively discussions.

However, not having seen this gem discussed (at least that I've seen) prompted me to finally get off my rump. Having a daughter in elementary school subjects me to occasionally mind-numbing fare...however I've found the Looney Tunes Show on Cartoon Network to be an Oasis in the desert.

I knew I was in trouble when my wife and daughter were at a Girl Scouts meeting, I checked the Tivo to see what was on, and upon discovering a new (to me) episode...I happily watched it all by myself.

It's essentially a complete reboot of the Looney Tunes world, done in a sort of sitcom-y suburban setting. Extremely clever, contemporary writing...and while I wouldn't say it was inappropriate for kids...it's certainly not geared for them, per se. Very adult, without being offensive to children.

Love-her-or-hate-her Kristen Wiig does one of the voices, as does Fred Armisen. Some of the initial episodes are a little rough, but enjoyable...however the back 16 or so (of 26) are pure gold. Programming note that "Looney Tunes" and "The Looney Tunes Show" are completely different, with the latter being the one I'm recommending.

So, check it out if you haven't seen it already. Don't want to set expectations too high, but knowing a bit about the general tastes of this forum...I think it would be very well received. It prompted a middle-aged guy who has never posted in any of the forums he lurks on to sign up and sing its praises...so it's got that going for it.

Series 2 DT and Comcast: are my senior citizen parents out of luck?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 08/18/2012 - 11:08
I bought my parents a Series 2 DT years ago and installed it for them in Florida. They have Comcast cable. At first they only had low-def: no problem. Then they wanted HD: they got a Comcast box, I split the coax and sent one to TiVo for 2-99 low-def and the other to Comcast for HD, and then installed the IR channel-changing wire and the AV wires to get 100+ on the TiVo (telling them explicitly NOT to touch their Comcast box when TiVo is taping channel 100 or higher, and to make sure it's on). They existed with that setup with no issues.

Now Comcast has "helpfully" digitized all their channels, requiring cable boxes to decode even 2 through 99. They sent out tiny free cable boxes, which are useless because you can't use the IR blaster to change their channels (or, at least, I couldn't find the proper code). They do have a regular (non-HD, non-DVR) cable box on the bedroom TV; I told them they could install the tiny free cable box in there and move that non-HD cable box to the parlor to use with TiVo. They would have to use the IR blasters for every channel, and never turn off the cable box, but it would work.

However, I just came to another realization: since the cable box only sends one channel at a time, it makes their DT capability useless, no? The TiVo would basically turn into a compicated glorified VCR.

Are they totally out of luck here? Would they have to move up to a newer DVR and get a cable card installed? Is it worth all that hassle, or shall I simply tell them to get a second HD DVR through Comcast? :( They just paid their annual $129 in March, so they're not even halfway through the contract year.

Also: if there are more modern TiVos which can handle this problem, is there a company that sells/installs them? There's no way these senior citizens can handle the complexity of sourcing, purchasing, and installing a more modern TiVo (not to mention dealing with Comcast to get a cable card for it). Again, is it worth the trouble, or should I just tell them, "Eat the remaining half-year of service and get a full-fledged second Comcast HD DVR"?

Thankst for any help.

DirecTivo R10 user wondering how to upgrade

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 08/18/2012 - 10:41
Dear TivoCommunity,

I've had DirecTV and DirecTivo R10 DVRs for about seven years. I've been very happy with them, and I've been resisting the move to HD TV, but recent events have forced me to upgrade the main TV to HD. The bedroom TV is still a CRT.

Though I pay DirecTV for content, I'me really more of a Tivo customer. I don't think I've ever used the DirecTV web site, and I've never paid DirecTV a pay-per-view fee.

I like the DirecTivo user interface and I use season pass routinely.

When I got the HDTV, I also bought a Blu-ray player, and I've been enjoying the HD Netflix. My old DirecTivo units still work fine, and they've been upgraded with big hard drives, but watching SD on an HD set is unsatisfying.

I've read that the new HD Tivo for DTV is quite limited. I've also accumulated a dozen or so Tivo remotes over the years, and being unable to use them would be a minor inconvenience.

The cable provider in my area is Comcast. There's no FIOS in my area.

It would be nice if I could find a solution with about the same monthly cash outlay as my current DTV bill.

What do you think I should do?

Is MoCA Interoperable?

Is MoCA a standard such that all MoCA devices can talk to each other regardless of brand?

I bought ten Actiontec MI424WR routers on eBay a while back solely for their MoCA functionality as Ethernet bridges. Five have since died and the other five are in service; I have no spares for when the next one dies.

So I'm wondering: Do I need to buy additional Actiontec devices or will Linksys, D-Link and other MoCa devices operate with the existing Actiontec devices?

I look at this site and think, yes, they are interoperable, but I don't know if my current MI424WR units meet the standard shown at the link.
