The Vampire Diaries - "The Departed" - 5/10/12

So, what did everyone think about that?

Elena in transition, Klaus in Tyler's body, Alaric dead. Quite a lot happened in this one.

Elena chose Stefan. Good. Now I wish they would cut the triangle crap, but I know they won't. Will Elena blame Stefan for turning? Did Stefan or Elena know about the blood? Whose blood was it?

I know Photoshopgrl was happy to see Elijah. That guy is pretty cool.

My Comcast Rant

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 05/10/2012 - 20:52
Wow....I mean wow.....

Since Xfinity OnDemand is coming to Boston, I bought my mom a Premiere. She currently has Motorola/Comcast/Tivo and didn't want to give up OnDemand. I spent close to FIVE hours today on the phone with various Comcast reps trying to pair a cable card. I couldn't believe the incompetence all around. One rep even told me that the "M" in "M-Card" stood for Motorola. I explained that it stood for multistream and after spending several minutes looking it up he agreed. :D

I finally threw in the towel and called Tivo. They were super helpful and got Comcast on the line. The Tivo rep guessed that I had a bad card based on the the way the card was acting. I picked up the card from a service center. First I was told they didn't have any and when I started to look pissed off the woman was kind enough to look out back. She came back with just a card. There was no packaging or paperwork or anything. She just handed me a card. I am guessing it is one that someone else already returned because it doesn't work. They ended up scheduling a technician visit which is pretty ridiculous.

I have never felt so lucky to have Verizon FIOS. My two separate cable card installs went pretty smoothly despite one of the techs admitting to never have done one before. He was still able to get it working in about 20 minutes.

TiVo for android ?

I forget where it was or who made it but where can I get the app that makes m.tivo.com look bad ass ?

I was thinking of using the official app but I remember the one that overhauls the look of m.tivo.com people were saying is waaaay better.

On that note, thoughts on the two anyone ?

American Idol - Top 4 Results - 05/10/2012

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 05/10/2012 - 20:17
And there you have it....

The last episode of American Idol I watch this season.

I was so impressed with the class Hollie showed in her exit. Making her way to the other contestants giving them all hugs as she sang. Walking over to the judges, who beat her down most of the season, and shaking all their hands. All the while with a smile on her face.

I HOPE the final two are Jessica and Phillip
I HOPE Jessica can pull this off and win it all.
I HOPE that will happen but I won't hold my breath.

But I will find out by checking the threads and not by watching the show. I can't take the obvious bias of the judges relentlessly pushing Joshua on the viewers. Jimmy talking for the last few weeks about the album they will make with Joshua. Somebody keep track of the Joshua standing ovation count. I think we are currently at something like 14.

Quote: "Surviving a Car Crash":

There are few things Americans love more than their cars. The problem: our cars don’t always love us back. Every year in the U.S., car crashes take tens of thousands of lives and injure many more, costing us nearly $100 billion in medical care and lost wages. But now, innovations in medicine, psychology, engineering, and even the military are increasing survival rates. Surviving a Car Crash explores the technology that could reduce the biggest risk facing drivers today - themselves. I've been seeing ads for this and will be recording it tonight. Looked ok from the ads but I'm not so sure now given the description.

The 20.2.1 changelog thread

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 05/10/2012 - 16:48
Intro
Stay tuned! This is a work in progress. I will not assign a real version number until the bulk of stuff already known has been plopped in place and some reasonable formatting has been achieved.

This is meant to be a changelog/buglist from 20.2 to 20.2.1.1(and prior carry-over issues) for the TiVo Premiere (Series 4). I will try to keep this #1 posting updated with all the issues as they are listed. The previous changelog threads are as follows:

14.9 is here: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...d.php?t=480226
20.2 is here: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...d.php?t=481338

Summary
This release contains a few new features and fixes several bugs. The primary change from 20.2 to 20.2.1 was to add new versions of the Netflix and Youtube applications. The rollout started on 05/10/2012. Margret from TiVo provided a "release notes" posting, which can be found at the following thread: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...d.php?t=487165

This changelog will incorporate the data from the release notes, user reports, and previous changelogs (for issues not resolved).

5 Awaiting Reports
This section holds all the carryover items from the previous version and most of the negatives from the previous version that are awaiting confirmation that the problems have been resolved or that they still exist. Please note that the section will not be renumbered as things are removed.

-Both UI-

5.1 The Select-Play-Select-9-Play code for displaying the on-screen clock and play-time-remaining during replays is gone and there is no replacement. Play-time-remaining is available by pressing Play or Pause but the clock is available only by returning to the main menu. It also display seconds, which some people find distracting and unnecessary, and it displays the clock in the center of the screen on HDUI (but lower right corner in SDUI). One person reported having the clock display on HDUI will cause performance and screen drawing issues.

5.2 The "This group is empty" bug that the previous changelog reported as "fixed" in the SDUI, is actually occurring in the HDUI now. It could be it is back in the SDUI, also. This bug will cause the display the above message if one deletes programs in the suggestion list too rapidly, then kick the user back one level in the menu. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...d.php?t=470339

5.3 Closed captions no longer appear on the screen while using 1xFF+ (first fast play) while in the SDUI or HDUI. Margret later explained it was due to technical reasons and implied this feature will not return.

5.4 With repeating manual recordings setup, it is possible that multiple duplicate entries will appear in the recording history as "will not record" with reason of not being in program guide. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...d.php?t=481547

5.5 There are some metadata issues with programs transferred via network to the TiVo. Further, there are some reports of extended metadata missing from programs pulled back from the Premiere, even in a .TiVo format file.

5.6 HME (Home Media Engine SDK) programs might have incorrect text display Also, at least one report of an HME actually crashing the Premiere. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb....php?p=8908963

5.7 There are reports that the network transfer speed is not as fast as it was in 14.9, although it is still faster than it was before 14.9. (It is perhaps 12% slower) http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...74#post8909374

5.8 Recordings on the Premiere, transferred to a computer, then transferred back and played on the Premiere no longer display closed captions. The captions do exist in the .TiVo files and can be seen on a computer. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...77#post8958577

-SDUI-

5.9 Occasionally, when trying to delete a program from Now Playing using the clear key, it will refuse to delete and offer a "bong" sound, instead. If one goes into the program details, it can be deleted. Or if one leaves Now Playing and returns, it can be deleted.

5.10 From "my shows", select a program to view description, then back out of it, then play another show using the play button. When using the left arrow to back out of the playback, the cursor/select is not returned to the program that was just played. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...17#post8911517

-HDUI-

5.11 HDUI Guide related: 5.11.1 When the guide is visible, pressing the "guide" or "clear" button to dismiss the guide results in the display of the medium-sized info banner, instead. This is unexpected behavior.

5.11.2 When scheduling a recording from the HD Program Guide, the guide switches to "SD" mode to display "Please Wait" and then back to HD for the confirmation dialog.

5.11.3 Guide has no way to turn off or stop the live preview in guide. This is consistent with the old guide behavior, but it does not match the rest of the HDUI, which honors a user preference or allows the user to press "|>" to temporarily stop it.

5.11.4 When performing certain actions on programs from the guide, like scheduling or cancelling a recording or changing recording options, the live preview window might jump to full screen for a few seconds, then go back to the preview window size again.

5.11.5 After selecting a show to record from the guide, the guide is reloaded and the cursor is placed back at the beginning of the list instead of being restored where it was.http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb....php?p=8895588

5.11.6 It is no longer possible to select an entry that is scheduled for recording and press clear to cancel the recording as was possible in the previous version of the guide, if other showings will be recorded. In such cases, it is only possible to cancel through the todo list. CLARIFICATION NEEDED

5.11.7 It is no longer possible to turn on any type of filter based on content type while in the new guide.

5.11.8 Programs marked as "new" show their first aired date as 1 day before the actual date the program is airing. Also, the "new" labels will sometimes disappear when switching to/from grid style to/from live style. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb....php?p=8897804

5.11.9 After selecting a program to record from the grid guide or mini guide, while watching a recording, when it redraws the guide, it places the cursor on the lowest channel instead of on the channel you just were, or on the channel the foreground tuner is using. Curiously, it doesn't do that when in the live guide. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...09#post8902409 5.12 It is no longer possible to use the right arrow to cycle through the different versions of the channel/program info display.

5.13 You can no longer thumbs up or down on items in the discovery bar.

5.14 HDUI On-Screen-Banner Related: 5.14.1 The select button brings up the mini guide now which disrupts entering SPS codes. However, you can still enter SPS code while playing a Showcase video or while the Info banner is up; or by temporarily switching to SDUI.

5.14.2 When entering channel numbers in "live" TV viewing, on the info banner or mini guide, they stop at 4 digits and do not wrap around as they used to do. So there is no way to correct a typo, you have to wait for the incorrect channel or exit the info banner/mini guide.

5.14.3 The first aired date for the program displayed on the banner is 1 day before the actual aired date. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...03#post8951103 5.15 Some people report that their play/pause location is lost when switching back and forth between watching two recording programs. It is unclear if this is only HDUI. MORE INFO NEEDED http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...88#post8895588

5.16 Deleting a Program Related:5.16.1 There are times when deleting a program from suggestions, using the clear button, then moving the cursor down a few menu entries, will result in two or more screen redrawings. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb....php?p=8901062

5.16.2 There are times when it is seemingly impossible to delete a program. Such programs will not delete on the TiVo Suggestions screen (the "x" will sit there forever or it just makes the "x" disappear without deleting), nor if selected then deleted. When played back, there is an error displayed about the channel and forces an exit. Sometimes it can be deleted at that point. If played a SECOND time, it will play normally, the user can exit and then delete it. This often happens when trying to stop two recordings and it frequently causes the first to become undeletable/unplayable.

5.16.3 There are occasions when trying to delete a program, the popup menu will have no option highlighted and any key press results in a very low-tone "bong". Usually after a minute, the entire HDUI will restart, complete with the TiVo intro animation. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...55#post9025455 http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...19#post9026619 5.17 When transferring network video to the Premiere (from, for example, PyTiVo), some users have noticed the HDUI menu screen can "quiver" or "shake" vertically, rapidly, by a pixel or two. It can also cause light stuttering in HD video playback during the transfer. Confirmed, but not known if this started in 20.2 http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb....php?p=8974053

5.18 When performing a one-time record of a show from the Guide and try to add time to it, if the show is not the next airing, you have to scroll through "upcoming" to find the episode you want to record. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb....php?p=8909900 NEEDS CONFIRMATION

5.19 When deleting a recording that is the lowest menu entry in a folder, the cursor will be placed at the highest menu entry, when it should have moved up by only one entry. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...58#post8953358

-Unresolved/Carry-Over-

5.20 Kidzone is still not available while using the HDUI. However, there is mention that the Spring 2012 update will have some parental controls in the HDUI.

5.21 Performance improvements in the HDUI still do not lead to a completely fluid user interface, mostly due to the delayed, live, internet-based loading of certain information, such as the discovery bar, and program graphics. Some screens take up to 6 seconds to finish drawing/updating everything. Many users report that initial drawing of "My Shows" now takes longer than in the 14.9 update. User expectations and reporting of performance are widely varied.

5.22 The reporting of the program size disk space is still wrong on the SDUI. They changed it to read "GB" but the reported numbers are 100 times smaller than the actual space it is using. However, in the HDUI, it is correct. First discovered in 14.9. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...d.php?t=480288

5.23 The Premiere is still upconverting to 720P, even if 480P is selected in video settings. First reported in 14.9. Some suspect it might have to do with needing to display HD overlays and popups when viewing SD material. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...d.php?t=479153

5.24 There are still times when "Stop and Delete" in the HDUI will stop the program recording but will not delete the program. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...99#post8892799

5.25 The KidZone SDUI dialog bug for the "Please Wait" dialog when selecting KidZone is still present. The dialog displays almost completely off the screen. This bug was introduced in 14.9.

5.26 When scrolling through wishlists, it can be very slow when using the channel down button, and presents a "Please Wait" dialog each time. Issue first occurred in 14.9. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...67#post8871667

5.27 Some users experience pixelation (macroblocking) when trying to watch Amazon VOD programming. This bug was introduced as early as early 2011, and might be addressed in the planned Spring 2012 update http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...elation&page=3

5.28 When selecting and recording a season pass from the guide, the Premiere will select the channel of the first airing of that program, rather than the channel on the selected program. Do not know when this started or if this has been that way forever. HDUI ONLY?

5.29 Although fixed for a lot of people in 14.8 the "Slide Remote Glitching" problem seems to have returned for many people in 20.2. Sometimes when fast forwarding through video and then pressing "play" to resume playback, the command is ignored. The blue light on the remote will indicate it is sent but the amber light on the Premiere will not blink. This can happen for several presses. Sometimes the TiVo will then "catch up" and flicker several times in rapid succession. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb....php?p=9081739

5.30 Over-the-air digital broadcasts that contain audio-only programming (with no video) will not tune on the Premiere.

New youtube app

I have been playing around with the new youetube app after the new spring update. One thing I can't figure out is when you go to say featured and it shows the different playlists like YouTube Trends, it says it has 2767 videos. How do go in and see a list of the videos? I have tried to figure it out but can't, maybe it's because I use a Harmony remote.

TiVo's New Netflix Player Hands-On Review

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 05/10/2012 - 15:39
Here at TechOfTheHub.com:
Quote: TiVo has just released a new Netflix player as part of their 2012 spring software update. In addition to being able to browse the Netflix catalog, the new TiVo Premiere Netflix player comes with support for 1080P HD video, Dolby Digital Plus surround sound and closed captions. When you add in TiVo’s comprehensive search capability and the convenience it offers (given TiVo usually lives on HDMI1), this is one of the best Netflix streaming implementations available. This has me considering buying a Premiere and selling my old Series3 w/PLS.

I already miss the old Youtube

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 05/10/2012 - 15:31
With the old Youtube, my subscriptions were in different categories. And i was able to search through each of them individually.

Now it seems that all my subscriptions are clumped together. This is a huge pain in my derriere!

I truly hope this has to do with my incompetence. I've been mucking around with it for quite a while now but can't find a solution. Any help would be appreciated?

YouTube app still crippled

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 05/10/2012 - 14:05
I tested out the new youtube app today. It is nice having an updated interface and HD but I still cant access many videos. Vevo videos the ones I tested. For example, I searched "Foster the people - Call it what you want" on both tivo and google tv. The youtube apps are very similar. The google tv one plays perfectly fine. The tivo one says "cannot play video - trying next video" or something similar.

Does anyone know if this will ever work? I would love if I could play vevo videos so I could finally get rid of my google tv (revue). Im hoping its not a licensing issue.

Fox Cancel's Alcatraz & The Finder

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 05/10/2012 - 13:25
Fox has thrown out the keys for freshman series 'Alcatraz' and 'The Finder'.

The cancellation's don't come as a surprise given the recent performance of both dramas. However, die-hard fans of the mystery series from JJ Abrams are sure to be disappointed.

'Alcatraz' had been up on the chopping block since its ratings started to dwindle from the 9.9 million that watched the series premiere. However, the nail was in the coffin after its season finale drew just 4.7 million.

'Bones' spin-off 'The Finder' drew an even smaller 3.9 million viewers for its season ender.

Meanwhile, Fox has renewed Kiefer Sutherland-starrer 'Touch'. While down significantly from its season premiere of 12.1 million, the series drew 6.8 million viewers for its latest episode.

The renewal was helped by strong international sales for the first season given '24's popularity worldwide. But we don't expect the drama from 'Heroes' Tim Kring to last past the second season.

Fox has already renewed 'The Simpsons', 'American Dad', 'The Cleveland Show', 'Bones', 'Glee', 'Kitchen Nightmares', 'New Girl', 'Raising Hope' and 'Fringe'.

'Fringe' will return for a thirteen episode final season next fall.

That sucks I liked both shows better than Touch...

Why Did DTV NERF the THR22?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 05/10/2012 - 12:51
I just switched back to DTV because a friend of mine gave their whole home DVR glowing reviews. Once I got everything installed I found that the HR24 isn't much better than the DISH DVR I just got rid of.
  1. the season pass manager only records on the channel you set it up on. This is problematic because in the event of a conflict, the next airing may not be on that channel for a week or more.
  2. If you pad the recordings to start a minute early by default, the software isn't smart enought to only pad the first show on back to back recordings. This forces additional tuners to be used and causes conflicts
  3. keyword auto record (Tivo calls it a wish list) but I have had no luck with it recording only new episodes. It either fails to record or records repeats as well. I called directv support and their answer is to "Not use the keyword autorecord and just set the series manager to record the latest episode I can find.". So the answer is to not use a feature they have on their product and to always record the latest show??? Fix your software!
  4. Entering in the keyword and narrowing the search parameters is quite clunky. Supposedly you can use Boolean operators to do this, but once again I have had no success.

So I started looking into the THR22 (DTV Tivo unit) because the Tivo Software is just the best out there. Here are the limitations:
"Please note: The following DIRECTV features are not available with the TiVo HD DVR: Whole-Home DVR service, DIRECTV iPad App remote control and live TV streaming functionality, DIRECTV CINEMA (satellite downloads), YouTube on TV, 3D, and GameSearch™." Most of these I really don't care for, but why remove the Whole Home DVR and 3D????

So here I am, trying to find ways to get back into a Tivo unit without having to break my contract and still have a whole home DVR. Any suggestion?

Has anyone done anything creative like a THR22 and sling box? Do the stand alone Tivo units support external settop boxes anymore?

Tivo Remote Question

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 05/10/2012 - 12:44
Greetings everyone. I am an extreme newbie when it comes to Tivo. I just purchased a Premeire XL (my first Tivo) and am loving it. Right now I am only using it for OTA and Internet features.

I see how you can program the remote to work the volume for both the TV and an audio receiver. Can you program it to work both at the same time? And if so, how do you switch between the two.

Also, can you change the remote to an RF mode?

Thank you.

Spring update FAIL

Downloaded the "Spring Update" for Premiere this morning and rebooted the box. I received the message saying I now had the update. When I try to open Netflix, the old menu flashes then gives an error message. When I open YouTube I get the same old sd menu that doesn't have my favs or channel when I log in. A second restart did not help. Suggestions?

Changes in the TiVo Premiere 20.2.1.1 update

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 05/10/2012 - 11:06
Hi Community,

This morning we began rolling out the 20.2.1.1 update for TiVo Premiere (including XL, XL4, and Elite). Many boxes will be authorized for the update today, with more added each day from the priority list. (http://tivo.com/priority).

There are three main features in the release:
- New Netflix App (created by Netflix)
- New Youtube App (created by Google)
- Parental Controls in HD Menus

Netflix
---------------------------------------------
The existing Netflix experience has been replaced with an entirely new one created by Netflix. In addition to the new look, the app now offers features such as:
· Improved video resolution, including support for 1080p (where available)
· Add to instant Queue
· Subtitles
· Dolby Digital Plus 5.1
· Search
· Personalized categories and recommendations
· Recently watched list

User tip: If you are playing a Netflix video and want to get back to the Netflix menus, press UP. When you want to leave the Netflix app and go back to the TiVo menus, press CLEAR.

YouTube
---------------------------------------------
The existing YouTube experience has been replaced with an entirely new one created by Google. In addition to the new look, the app now offers:
· Directory of YouTube Channels
· Links to related videos
· Automatic playing of the next video (like a TV channel)

User tip: When you want to leave the YouTube app and go back to the TiVo menus, press CLEAR.

Parental Controls in HD Menus
---------------------------------------------
Parental Controls are now available for customers using the HD Menus. From TiVo Central > Settings & Messages > Parental Controls you can set up a four-digit code, and specify which TV and Movie ratings will require that code in order to watch or record the show.
Note: There is no "KidZone" in the HD Menus.

Other changes
---------------------------------------------
1. Cox customers that had difficulty receiving "Plus Pak" channels should find that issue resolved.
2. Customers experiencing pixelation in Amazon Video downloads should find that issue resolved.
3. If you bring up the Guide over a recording, it now highlights the channel on the foreground tuner, rather than the lowest channel in the Guide.
4. The "First Air Date" should now be correct in all locations. (It had been off by one day in some situations.)
5. When pressing RECORD in the Guide and selecting "Season Pass & Other Options" you are now taken to an episode-specific screen instead of a series-specific screen. (Makes it easier to change recording options for that specific episode.)
6. Video Output settings are now respected in video when running the HD Menus. You can now check on all video formats if you prefer "native" resolution pass-through. The TiVo will no longer automatically up-convert to 720p when you are watching full-screen video and using HD Menus.

Just for you, tivocommunity.com!
---------------------------------------------
Our engineers REALLY appreciate the passion you have for TiVo. Some of them closely monitor the activity on this board, and wanted to do a couple of things they knew this group would appreciate the most. So, in this update you'll find:
1. SELECT-PLAY-SELECT-9-SELECT now displays a clock (without seconds) in the upper right corner when using HD Menus. (Make sure you press SELECT once first, to bring up the Mini-Guide, before you enter the code.)
2. For those of you that didn't like the change where the fourth press of Fast Forward was ignored, you can now re-enable the use of the fourth press of FWD to cycle back to PLAY by entering: SELECT-PLAY-SELECT-8-8-SELECT. (Make sure you press SELECT once first, to bring up the Mini-Guide, before you enter the code.)

More Updates Coming
---------------------------------------------
This update will be available to all TiVo Premiere boxes purchased from tivo.com or a retailer. If a cable company provided your TiVo Premiere box, they will notify you when then update is available.

There are a more changes coming this year, including:
· HD version of the Season Pass Manager
· HD version of the To Do List
· HD version of My Shows for Multi-Room Streaming

We hope you enjoy the latest installment in our series of TiVo Premiere updates. If you have feedback about your TiVo experience please email me at margret@tivo.com.
