Just moved and have Optimum DVR+, is it worth getting TIVO?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 07/24/2012 - 23:59
Hey, any thoughts/opinions would be appreciated.

We are in the process of moving and will be at our new address on Tuesday of next week. We had cable come out (Cablevision/Optimum) and install our cable before so that we would be set to go on the day we moved in. Now, they installed a DVR+, which I guess is their new and standard DVR that everyone has now. I am in Brooklyn (NY) by the way.

Anyways, I have been browsing the net and have read some real HORROR stories about the Optimum DVR+. Things like... some recordings delete themselves, other things do not record, only recording portions of programs, audio/video synch issues, the box freezing a whole lot. I am really nervous about this since it doesn't seem like a small amount of people experiencing this. It sounds like MANY, although it could just be that the only people writing reviews and such are those experiencing issues.

So, I have to ask. Should I give it a go and see if the same problems happen to me or should I just go ahead buy a TIVO premiere and set that up right from the get go?

Again...any thoughts/opinions would be much appreciated.

Netflix and transfer cuts in and out (wireless N)-network vs reciever?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 07/24/2012 - 22:27
I have my tivo premiere hooked up via a netgear wn2500rp wireless bridge to a netgear wndr3700 wireless router. The signal strength is excellent. The tivo premiere feeds into a pioner vsx-1121 receiver which then goes to my pioneer tv. The connection seems very fast- when I transfer from that tivo to my other premiere (which has a wired ethernet connection) it is very fast- 1 hour HD shows in 5-10 minutes total max.
1)But when I'm watching netflix the screen goes out (not just like its paused, but almost like the receiver is switching input modes or something- it goes completely off and the recevier flashes) and then it goes back on- takes a few seconds.
2)Also, sometimes during show streams (not transfers) to the other tivo premiere it will say the connection failed or somethign like that and I have to hit retry and it will continue.

It sounds like its overall some sort of network issue- but what? I've assigned static ip addresses and that hasn't fixed the netflix issue (haven't tested tivo to tivo streaming again)? I should run a ethernet cable to see if that fixes the tivo but with a great wireless signal what could be doing that? Also, if it was just a network issue why does the receiver flash and the tv go comletely off- almost like its changing inputs or something?

Comcast On-Demand interface - improved

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 07/24/2012 - 17:28
I've been an enthusiastic user of Tivo's Comcast On-Demand offering in SF area, and just noticed today that the browsing interface has been updated from a Low-Def (old UI) style to an HD new style interface.

Also while viewing a program, the progress bar is now HD style rather than SD style.

I did notice more weird error messages when entering the On Demand menus than before, so maybe this is still a work in progress.

Also noticed a glitch where sometimes when scrolling up/down a list after using page up/down commands, the scroll location resets itself back to the top of the list. Annoying when navigating some of the long lists.

But upside is you can see a lot more characters of each program and get a side-screen that shows a short description without clicking on the programs, so its a big win.

Also it seemed to me that the scrolling FFW/RRW is smoother with the new system, although the lag on commands is still about the same.

Transitioning into OnDemand still switches resolutions back down to SD and then back up to HD based on the "Please Wait" bug.

My version is reporting and its a 4-tuner model.

TiVo Premiere TCD746320 DVR - LIFETIME SERVICE - Best Buy 4 yr Protection +Wireless G

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 07/24/2012 - 16:33
Starting price $499.99, Buy it now $549.99

Like new without a scratch but per EBAY guidelines I must list this item as USED since it's no longer factory sealed.

We bought this October 2011 and so it still has some factory warranty on it PLUS, PLUS I purchased the Best Buy Protection plan which is calculated into the price I'm selling this for and the Best Buy Protection plans covers the Tivo til October 2015.

To the winning bidder, please let me know the name and address along with the phone in which you want the Best Buy Protection plan to be listed under when I call them to switch the coverage over.

You pay nothing for the Tivo service as it includes the LIFETIME SERVICE CONTRACT.

This auction also includes the wireless G adapter which retails for $60 and again is included in the price.

**PLEASE READ** this comes directly from the Tivo support pages - We are sorry that you’re giving your TiVo box a new home, but we understand situations arise when it’s better to place your TiVo box with new owner. We recommend you and the new owner contact TiVo Customer Support at the same time. If this is not possible, please contact us before the new owner so we can prepare the transfer for the new owner. We will need the new owner’s full name and email address. IMPORTANT: Do not ship or give your box away until you have unlinked all your accounts (i.e. Netflix, Pandora, etc.). Once you have completed this, you will want to perform a Clear & Delete Everything on your TiVo box to clear any other remaining personal information.** THEREFORE - please be patient and give an extra day or two in order for me to call TIVO and put it in your name. I would appreciate your patience. We have always shipped quickly but this process could take a little extra time.

Bid with confidence as I have 100% positive feedback.

WHY AM I SELLING? I always get asked that and I ask the same when I'm buying something. Simply put, I lost my job and therefore am selling some of my electronics to help with the situation.

99s 103s

I just had an hr20-700 replaced by the new THR22-100 Tivo receiver. I used to have Tivo and I am extremely satisfied with the new receiver. The problem is (if it's even a problem) this: I am getting 95% or better on all the satellites except 99s and 103s. On these 2 satellites I get 0.

I get 95%+ on the 103ca and 103cb. I get very rare pixellation, especially on the Turner new HD channel. Is it normal to get 0 for 99s and 103s?

Has anyone else noticed that certain TV shows are setting the copyright flag preventing the TiVo from transferring the show opposed to the network flagging all their shows? Today I went to transfer some shows to my living-room TiVo and found a couple had the copyright flag set. These shows were Political Animals and Warehouse 13. I know Warehouse 13 never had the copyright flag until this new season. And Political Animals is the only USA Network show that I know of that has the flag set. Hopefully this doesn't become a common practice.

Not volunteering to put yourself up for eviction is the #1 rule. I think Jeffrey will be voted out for being that cocky and stupid.

The fact that Andrea was the one coming back from limbo was given away in the first minute. She was clearly shown in the house in the video clip at the start.

How Big Cable killed the open set-top box

Discuss. Do you think we'll ever see 3rd party boxes that can do everything a cable company provided box can do?

Network management

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 07/24/2012 - 11:39
We've got a Premiere and a Premiere XL4 in a house with all sorts of other networked stuff: PS3, Macs, PC, iPhone, iPad, etc.

I'm a bit puzzled how to work out a useful sharing scenario. We have two Tivos because we don't watch a lot of stuff together. There's only the occasional movie or TV show; it's even a split with the Olympic sports. So we don't really need to share what we record on the Tivos; it's easier to just double record the few things in common.

And of course each has their own phone and computer, or at least separate accounts. And separate emails, separate Pandora accounts, separate YouTube/gmail accounts, etc.

So here's where I'm stumped:

The free Hulu Plus account seems to be only for one-person use, correct? I don't see a way to share one paid account without running into issues once we start watching on mobile devices. I have the Tivo.com account in my name; would I even be able to associate another Hulu Plus (or Netflix for that matter) account with a Tivo?

Second, is there a way to share media from a Mac only to a certain Tivo? We've got separate music libraries, for example, but Tivo Desktop just seems to share the current user's iTunes Library.

Third, we haven't tried this yet, but what if each of us fires up the Tivo app on an iOS device? Will it work with both Tivos as long as we each select the right one to control?

Fourth, since both Tivos have lifetime, would it have been better to have two tivo.com accounts? I suppose we'd lose the $100 discount, but would we? It might actually make things easier.

THD on FiOS, would like to swap out for an M-card

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 07/24/2012 - 09:30
Hello all..

I've had a happily running THD on FiOS for years now. When we got it, there were no multi-stream cards, so we have two single-stream cards.

What's the process look like to swap out for a single M-Card? I figure if it's not difficult, might as well reclaim that $4 a month.

Obviously, they'll send someone out to do the swap, but is it as simple as pull the old cards out, pair the new one and that's it?

New Tivo?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 07/24/2012 - 05:52
I want to get the new TIVO but am having trouble convincing the wife we need one. We currently have an RCA DVR 80 which is getting close to 8 years old. It is slowing down a lot. When you go to now playing it takes 1-2 min ( seemingly) to open an episode and play it.
Any ideas on how long Direct TV will be offering the new TIVO?

Only one of the 24 finalists made it through stage 2 then failed part way thru stage 3.

I wonder if Mount Madoriyama is going to be a permanent skyline landmark in Vegas? Or will they tear it down and rebuild.

Figured there probably won't be much discussion week to week plus IIRC this show has a very short run so might as well combine it all into one thread.

I am surprised Chris paired up with Blakely. Chris seems mature for his age yet Blakely immature.

Also the twins, ugh, hate that they somehow went to the same University I did. The twins were also on Jersey Shore, in Italy. I can't wait for them to go next as I don't really like them.

I don't pay attention to the strategy and numbers of the game, I just like the drama. If Swat voted with the fans would it have mattered next week or will the vets just run them over (assuming the vets stick together)

Premiere Q

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 07/23/2012 - 19:10
Given the issues with the XL4, what are the opinions about what to expect with the 6 tuner Premiere Q? I'd love to have a 6 tuner and would gladly pay for it but cringe at the risk of issues that XL4 owners have gone through.

BTW, this is not a Tivo bash. I used Tivos for a long time and love them. I only paused because of MRV dead on TWC. Streaming cured that so I'm on the edge of investing in new Tivos again. Just researching very well before dropping a couple grand on new Tivos.

Am I missing amazon on my premiere?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 07/23/2012 - 18:45
Did I miss something? I see instructions on Tivo and Amazon sites, but I do not see any Amazon video on my Premiere.

yet these instructions seem to be wrong as I do not see amazon on my Premiere. I have it on my HD, but not the Premiere.

Channel mismatch?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 07/23/2012 - 18:14
I was running through guided setup prior to getting my cablecard installed.

Got to choosing provider (comcast), entered area code, etc. When I got to channel selection it had only two choices, a basic and basic-extended. I have what's called Premier with Comcast. I noticed that some channel numbers on the Tivo list were different than those on the written list I was given by Comcast a couple of days ago. Is this anything I need to worry about, or try to correct? The installer is coming tomorrow.

Pixelation / stuttering with OK hard drive?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 07/23/2012 - 17:58
Sorry if this is covered elsewhere... I looked and didn't find anything that seemed to apply to this particular set of symptoms.

First, some background.....

I have a TivoHD, upgraded several years ago to a 1GB WD Green HD. It is on digital cable (no antenna) and has a single multi-stream cable card in it on Comcast. It ran perfectly until about a year and a half ago, when it suddenly got into a continuous reboot loop after a brief power failure. All WD tests on the HD passed but repeated attempts to restore a known good image from the original 160GB HD resulted in the same reboot loop. The power supply was perfect... all correct voltages and no signs of swollen caps. In desperation, I purchased another identical 1GB HD and restored the same image to it, which worked perfectly. The "failed" HD was reformatted to NTFS and lives happily to this day in a Win7 PC.

That replacement HD worked 100% with no issues whatsoever until a couple months ago, when it started pixellating and stuttering infrequently and randomly. I attempted a kickstart 57 but could not get it to run, so I successfully ran the kickstart 54 SMART tests, which passed. After the kickstart 54, the pixellation vanished utterly and it ran perfectly for several months.

The pixelation returned again this morning, so I tried a kickstart 57. This time I got it to run (I wasn't waiting long enough for it to start). It finished after 2.5 hours and rebooted successfully. However, the pixelation and stuttering remained unchanged. I then ran a kickstart 54 and the quick automated SMART tests, which once again passed. And lo and behold, the pixellation has once again vanished!

Anyone know why a kickstart 54 SMART test would cure pixellation and stuttering where a successful kickstart 57 would not? A kickstart 54 is only a test.... it doesn't change anything on the HD. Any ideas what might be going on here? The power supply still looks OK.

TV This Week! 7/23

Summertime is mistakenly one of the most underrated seasons in the TV year. Even though we know it’s coming, the summer hiatus from our favorite shows still hurts just as much every year. Our cure? Take the opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and start watching some great new shows! Since we know you’re busy relaxing on the beach, laying out by the pool, or thrusting yourself in and out of the backyard sprinkler,  we’ve taken your TV watching needs into our hands (or should we say remotes?!). Continue Reading
