Land line moved to Verizon Home phone connect

Can a Tivo be connected to a Verizon Home Connect service?
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/splash/hpc.jsp
A friend of mine got rid of her Centurylink home phone and went with Verizon wireless Home connect. It says on the website that DVR updates are not supported, but I wondering if anyone was able to make it work? The friend did get wireless internet, but it is metered, so I am thinking I don't want her two TiVos using up all her monthly allowance.
I am her 'I.T.' person.
But like all I.T. persons, I am stuck trying to fix something I advised her not to get. Or at least I suggested other options that she didn't take.
I have two wireless Tivo adapters that I can take over and connect if the Home connect will not support the Tivo phone line.
It would be nice that she would have internet capabilities on her Tivos (something she has never had as she had dial up internet before) Then she would have the extra search capabilities and download capabilities. But downloading any videos is going to eat up her 2 gig per month allowance. (also shared with her Droid phone. Ya, Ya, I know, she could have done much better, but who ever listens to the IT guy when getting ready to buy the stuff I am going to have to maintain/configure?)

tivo series 3 records more programs than requested.

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 08/01/2012 - 19:31
If I set my Tivo to record a maximum of FIVE shows of (say) Modern Marvels, it goes ahead on its own and records from 6 to 12 and sometimes more. Why is this? What can I do to limit the Tivo to recording the selected FIVE maximum?

Does it have anything to do with the fact that some programs are available on multiple channels? This is true, but the channels are not duplicates so I would rather not turn off any of my selected channels.

Thanks.

Tivo HD reboots spontaneously

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 08/01/2012 - 18:29
A few times a week my Tivo HD will spontaneously reboot. It's been upgraded to a 2TB internal drive and sits behind a power conditioner. None of my other equipment shows signs of any power surge or disconnect.

From what I've read, it might be a HDD problem or a power supply/cable capacitor issue.

I actually have an old HD that I tried to repair with a new power supply when it would hang forever at the "Just a few minutes more" screen. So I will probably try to examine the power supply/cable and replace if there's any question about them. Seems a lot easier/quicker than copying the content of my current drive onto a new drive.

Anything I should check or other ideas as to a cause?

New user: IR/RF setup question for hidden Premiere

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 08/01/2012 - 15:02
I've read through a few threads on the subject and am unsure what I need. I just ordered service through a local provider, which includes the Tivo Premiere. In our room, the tv/sat box has always been hidden in the closet behind the TV. The first unit needed a simple IR extender, mounted on the front of the TV. My DirectTV unit just needed an RF kit ( antenna and RF Remote).
The install date is next week, and I want to have the necessary equip ready. What do I need? TIA.

Comcast On Demand available in NY Metro area

I live about 50 miles north of Manhattan in Putnam County. When I turned my TV on last night I was greeted with a message stating I now had access to On Demand. I wasn't sure it would ever be available in my area let alone so quickly.

Help with HD install in Directv TRH22

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 08/01/2012 - 14:10
Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding upgrading the hard drive on the DirecTV TiVo THR22. When I removed the black bracket that holds the hard drive I foolishly did not notice where the black wire was going. You know the wire the kind of wraps around it. I know it goes back in the little ridges along the sides of the black bracket but the ridges end at the separator panel piece and after that I'm not sure where it went. It drove me nuts I couldn't find where that little brass socket thingy at the end was supposed to go. So I routed the wire underneath the separator panel to the other side and sort of wrapped it around one of the posts holding the fan wire and left the little brass thing just sort of in the air. I'm guessing it has something to do with measuring the temperature. The new 2TB WD AV-GP (WD20EURS) HD I put in has worked flawlessly. Absolutely nothing wrong, it shows 42°C in the system information, pretty normal.

So the question really is where should that brass thingy have ended up? Opening it back up is no big deal for me, but at the moment there doesn't seem to be any reason to unless someone here to give me information otherwise.

Thank you so much.

Disappointed in first ep of season 2 of Friday Night Lights. Quit now or continue?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 08/01/2012 - 14:05
** NO SPOILERS ** NO SPOILERS **

After hearing about how great Friday Night Lights was for so long, I finally got around to watching it on Netflix. I really enjoyed the first season. They had some great writing and the coach's family was very well done. As the parent of a similarly-aged daughter, I had a hard time watching some scenes because they hit so close to home. I can understand why the show struggled to find an audience. When it was originally on, I thought it was going to be Dawson's Creek with football. But it's really a well done show about a life in a small Texas down with football as the background.

However, I just watched the first episode of the second season and I was very disillusioned with the bridge scene. The tone of that plot point just seems terribly wrong compared with the story from the first season. I'm concerned that the show is going to continue these crazy, ratings-grabbing ploys and the show I love is going to devolve into a complete mess.

Should I quit watching now? Just go on as if there was one great season and that was it? Or continue watching because they are able to handle that bridge situation in a believable manner which fits with the first season?

Please, NO SPOILERS.

Tivo MSD Qualifier

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 08/01/2012 - 13:07
All but one of my Tivos have been purchased as used boxes and all have lifetime. The one I got from Tivo was at the MSD price. Is there any way to know which boxes can serve as a qualifier for future MSD purchases without having to call Tivo and ask?

MOCA and remote controls?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 08/01/2012 - 10:07
I've been reading with interest the various threads around here pertaining to MOCA (media over cable).

What I keep missing, though, is any discussion of how one could control a device remotely. Shouldn't that be possible?

In other words, if you have a TiVo in one room of the house, is there a way of

1) using MOCA to see its contents on a TV in another room? and

2) to control it remotely (i.e., Now Playing, pick shows to watch, etc.)?

Hope this makes sense.

My suspicion is that some sort of IR extender, remote device would be needed for #2; unsure about what's needed to set up #1.

TiVo Olympic Coverage — Top Moments — July 31, 2012

TiVo Blog - Wed, 08/01/2012 - 08:08
Women’s Gymnastics captured the top spots for the most-watched moments on Day 4 of the Olympic Games. McKayla Maroney came to London so she could dominate the vault. Last night, Maroney performed one of the most difficult and dangerous vaults and stuck a perfect landing, which landed her in first place on the TiVo Top Moments. Another highlight for American audiences was watching Russian gymnast, Anastasia Grishina, lose her balance while performing in the team artistic event. Americans gloated over the Russian team being brought to tears. Finally, between Maroney’s Continue Reading

Another new TIVO question

Well here's hoping they have tham in my market!
My old tivo has quite a lot of saved shows on it. I own the unit.
If and when I get the new TIVO will the installer do anything to the old unit to dissable the ability to view the saved content?

Need to know if I start "burning" like a mad man.

What's a decent to good signal strength for channels?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 08/01/2012 - 03:53
Just installed a TIVO premiere with my optimum cable card here in Brooklyn NY and I was wondering what a good signal strength is for channels?

I did a few tests on a regular broadcast network, a cable channel, and then a premium channel.

My results were basically in the 77-89 range for the three. Is that ok or should results always be in the high 90's?

All the Right Moves premieres 7/31/12 *spoilers*

I haven't had a chance to watch yet, because I've been watching The Olympics -- but wanted to get the thread started anyhow.

If this turns out to be an all-season thread, I have a request. Could the first person to post about a new episode post something in the thread title to delineate each week's discussion?

Also, if you're coming along later in the run, and you're talking about an early episode, it can help to make a brief mention somewhere to say which episode you've just watched.

Thanks, everybody!

Need Upgrade Advice

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 07/31/2012 - 22:58
I've had an SVR-3000 with lifetime for many years (my first Tivo), but it has just died. That is, the hard drive appears dead; I cannot talk to it using various utilities, and it does not make the power-up sounds I am used to hearing. (My original 80 hour drive died about 5 years ago, at which time I upgraded to a 1 TB using InstantCake.) Instead of buying a new drive, I am considering buying a new Tivo Premier XL (150 hour unit), but have a few questions:

1. Can I qualify for MSD, in order to get lifetime on the new unit for $399, if the old SVR-3000 can no longer "talk" to Tivo HQ anymore? Does it need to check in every now and then?

2. The Tivo website offers me an "Upgrade Program" price of $249 on the XL, but it seems their regular price on the XL is the same. Am I missing something?

3. The best price I see for an XL is on Amazon for around $207 (also saving me tax). Is there a better deal?

4. If I decide to cancel my cable and go OTA at some point, I can still use the XL to record OTA shows? How will it know which OTA channels I receive -- do I tell it manually?

5. Any other considerations I am missing?

(As background, which isn't really relevant: my family has been living on Comcast analog-only cable all this time. My wife and kids have been asking for an upgrade to Comcast digital service for quite some time, so that we can get more channels, but I have resisted, because I am cheap, and irrationally hate the idea of getting a cable box. (So idea of using a cable box along with a Tivo IR blaster is too inelegant for me to bear.) So now I am willing to join the rest of society and fork over more cash to Comcast in exchange for more channels, in digital, while getting a new Tivo that can use a cable card and therefore stay cable box-free. And now in the Bay Area Comcast is allowing digital Tivos to do fun new things. An alternative to Comcast (which I hate) would be to cut the cord and go with OTA & Roku, or OTA & Premier, or all three. The kids want PBS Kids (which they already have), Cartoon Network, Sprout, and Nickelodeon, but might be happy if money to be spent on Comcast instead got spent purchasing specific shows they want via Apple TV or Amazon. The wife wants ESPN, which is only available via cable. Spending $399 for lifetime plus $200+ for the unit just because of a dead SVR-3000 hard drive seems severe, but on the other hand this is a long-overdue upgrade and would maintain family harmony. And alternatively buying a Roku box and an antenna and perhaps an Apple TV (if we want our content to be purchased through iTunes) and paying for Hulu Plus and maybe even Netflix too starts to add up. So I think the XL plus digital Comcast is the way to go. So paying $600+ for the XL rather than just $100 for another 1 TB drive for the SVR-3000 seems like the way to go.)

Thanks so much for all your help! This forum has always been a source of great information over the years!

Tivo Elite/XL4 on Ebay

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 07/31/2012 - 15:47
I just put up my Tivo Elite on Ebay. The auction will not be live until 9PM central time tonight 7/31/12. This Tivo only has been used about a week. Does not work good with Time Warner Cable and the tuning adapter/cable card setup here in the Dallas area so I gave up. This was the 3rd Elite model that I tried, thats why it was only used a week. Auction starts at 99 cents. If you have any questions about this please ask me. I'll check this thread and also you can message me on Ebay as well, or PM me.

There is no service on this Tivo so you will have to get your own service.

Heres the link:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/180942126526...#ht_500wt_1361

It may not show up for you until tonight when the auction goes live. Thanks :)
