Comcast Xfinity on Demand - GSM errors

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 09/06/2012 - 17:33
I mentioned this in another thread, but thought I would start a new one with information on specific errors.

I am in Colorado, where Xfinity on Demand is supposedly live. I have the XOD logo under Find Programs now, but when I select it, I get the following error:

Service Error
Request failed. Please try again. If problem continues, call your cable operator. Reference (GSM-2) when calling. The locale code is tivocardio-ch2-a2p.comcast.com

I called Comcast and they thought the problem was that I did not have a VOD code on my account. They added it and then de-paired, re-paired the CableCARD and sent an AUTH signal to it, but I still get the error (I did check the CableCARD status and made sure the card was validated).

Assuming that the locale code refers to some sort of VOD or heartbeat server, I tried to ping it, but the Comcast DNS didn't recognize that address (and I don't even know it is a proper server name - that was just a guess on my part).

Does anyone who has Xfinity on Demand have any experience with this GSM-2 error (or GSM-7 that some others are seeing)?

Help With Multiple New Issues After I moved to a New State

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 09/06/2012 - 17:21
I just moved to North Carolina from Louisiana and the only cable company here is Time Warner. I have a Tivo Premiere that's about 2 years old. i was not pleased with my old cable company, because the tuning adapter didn't always do right but usually it worked, especially the last year or so. I moved and lo and behold the tuning adapter does not pick up certain HD stations such as CBS and ESPN2, which are stations I tend to watch and record a lot in HD. If you unplugged the adapter, you could get the CBS in HD; I was out of luck with ESPN2. Today I noticed that CBS HD with the adapter off was having a problem with the signal and I could not get the channel. So I plugged the adapter back in and poof, the HD CBS channel came through perfectly while the adapter was booting up. THis went on about 5 minutes until it booted and the Tivo recognized the device, at which time it stopped receiving the channel. I also was able to record the 5 minutes as an experiment. This tells me there is some way I should get the channel using the adapter and that its not a problem with the cablecard.

Here'e the kicker: TW says that the lack of channels is an issue with the Tivo, and that it needs an update that Tivo has yet to provide. Tivo says it's TW who needs to make sure their cablecards and tuning adapters receive all channels, which they are not. I am inclined to side with Tivo on this because my last crappy cable company at least got all channels, and when I had a problem getting channels they came and fixed the problem and it worked. So I don't know what to do; I refuse to give up on my tivo box and give TW any more money for their own inferior box because of their own incompatibility issues. But My viewing experience at this time is seriously downgraded since I moved.

Now another issue. Time Warner is famous for its policies on copy Protection which keeps me from transferring the vast majority of any programs I want to move to my computer or between tivos (if I reactivated my old one). This is a MAJOR highlight of why I get Tivo. The easy solution is to just dump TW but we live in the middle of nowhere and I have no other options; I hope we get FiOS but unfortunately I am miles from anywhere it's available. I thought about the new Directv box but from what I can tell you can't download to your computer; I have read that it doesn't work with Tivo to go and not sure about kmttg. So that might not be the way to go.

Folks, am I just screwed? Aside from hardware tampering which I don't feel savvy enough to attempt, can I get the protected stuff that my old company did not copy protect onto my computer with capture hardware and software? And what does anyone think about the tuning adapter and cable card issues? Is it the cable company or Tivo, or does it matter? It looks to me like an obvious case of the company wanting you to use their equipment and penalizing you for not using it. They already told me that my cable modem which I own would not work with their internet, which I knew was not true, and when I called them on it, they backed down. So they have already been untruthful. Any advice would be of the greatest help.

thanks,

cwn

Polyamory (SHO)

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 09/06/2012 - 15:53
My wife and I recently came across Showtime's reality show Polyamory. It follows two polyamorous groups, a "triad" consisting of a married couple and their girlfriend, and a "quad" of two married couples living together.

What a weird group of people. In the quad arrangement, one of the husbands is a total perv, pushing his wife relentlessly to let him hook up with her girlfriend (outside of the 4 people in the quad). The wife of the other husband is so neurotic and awkward about the whole arrangement, that you have to think she grudgingly goes along with everything in order to stay in her relationship. For a show about relationships with multiple sex partners, there is very little that is sexual about any of the four.

The triad almost seems normal by comparison. My main question is how did the Pauly Shore look alike guy manage to get two attractive women. The girlfriend of the triad couple is clearly insecure - she proposes to the couple and wants them all to get rings tattooed on their fingers because, as she says, you can't "just take a tattoo off."

It is an interesting show, and it really underscored the feeling I got when watching HBO's drama Big Love (about one guy with several wives): being in a relationship with more than one partner seems like a HUGE PITA! :D

Any reports of Audio/Video slightly out of sync?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 09/06/2012 - 15:46
My Tivo Desktop software works great...yet the big flaw is that the Audio/Video is often out of sync once converted to iphone or ipad format.

Does the "stream" have this issue as well?

Hooking up Stream without hardwired TiVo

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 09/06/2012 - 13:17
http://www.tivo.com/products/tivo-st...ity#networking

The instructions clearly state that you must have a real ethernet connection to both your TiVo Premiere and your TiVo Stream. That they both have to be hardwired into your router to work...

BUT...

I have been told that this isn't actually the case.

I'm specifically interested in wiring the Stream up to my router, but having a TiVo Premiere in another room stream shows.

Has anyone in the real world actually tried this? How was your experience?

TiVo Launches TiVo Stream, Enabling Subscribers to Watch Recordings on Their iPads for the First Time

Finally, Viewers' Favorite Recorded Shows Can Be Streamed on any iPad, iPhone or iPod touch in the House or Loaded Up to Take on Any Trip

ALVISO, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 6, 2012) - TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), a leader in the advanced television entertainment market, today announced the launch of its TiVo® Stream, an accessory allowing TiVo® Premiere DVR users to watch recordings on their iPads or for the first time instantly stream their favorite shows and DVR content to their iPad®, iPhone® or iPod touch® in the house without interrupting normal viewing on the television. TiVo Stream is also the ideal TiVo accessory for entertainment fans on-the-go; allowing users to load it up and take their favorite recordings on any trip.*

"Finally, consumers can have the flexibility they have long demanded by enjoying their favorite entertainment content anywhere -- be it at home, in the air, or on-the-road," said Jim Denney, GM and VP of Product Marketing for TiVo Inc. "With the launch of TiVo Stream, we are ushering in a new era of flexibility, empowering our users to watch their recorded entertainment regardless of location. The ability to quickly and easily stream content to second screens like smartphones and tablets via the TiVo app helps TiVo users get even more from their TV-watching experience."

First Simultaneous Streaming and Download of Recorded Content
TiVo Stream is the first device to enable simultaneous streaming or downloading of recorded shows to up to four mobile devices without interrupting what is currently playing on TV.

With support for up to four streams at once, users can now watch previously recorded and currently recording content over their home network, allowing mom to enjoy her favorite cooking program in the kitchen, dad to stay on top of the game while in the garage, and give the kids an opportunity to catch up with their favorite cartoons in the backyard.

For on-the-go users, TiVo Stream allows TV fans to download recordings from their TiVo Premiere DVR for viewing later outside of the home, via TiVo's app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch*. Users can download a one hour show to their mobile device in as little as 15 minutes and view it later even when not connected to a network. TiVo knows a device's storage space is sacred, and lets users know how much space is required prior to downloading and gives them a choice of two file sizes, making it ideal for travelers.

Award-Winning User Experience
Harnessing the power of the world's most innovative user experience, TiVo Stream takes advantage of TiVo's intuitive search and browsing experience that enables users to quickly and easily find or discover television and broadband programs, then converts it to a format that's easily viewable or downloadable to a compatible second-screen device. Additionally, content plays in the TiVo app, allowing users to navigate features such as cast information, or scrub through a show. This compatibility creates a consistent experience -- no matter where users watch.

The TiVo Stream is compatible with TiVo's line-up of Premiere DVR products, including TiVo Premiere, TiVo Premiere XL, TiVo Premiere 4 and TiVo Premiere XL4. It requires TiVo's free app for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to bring an intuitive on-screen experience and remote control operations to users' compatible devices.

Stream Purchase Availability?

I'm curious to see if there's a better price anywhere else.

Previous SP stopped working, now Can't Schedule a Season Pass

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 09/06/2012 - 10:53
Believe me, I searched. :) All the other "hits" were 2-3 years old.

I previously had a season pass set up to record the nightly news.

D/FW area; Channel 508; "News 8 at 5" is the title.

A couple of weeks ago, the SP just stopped recording.
Bringing up the SP says no future showings.

So I figured, OK, they just changed the name or something, so I deleted the Season Pass and went to the Grid Guide to set up a new one.

There it is; 5:00pm, channel 508, "News 8 at 5".
Hit the record button -- No SEASON PASS option.
But there is a "Future Episodes" (or some other phrase) that, when selected, does indeed show it airing every weeknight.

I tried also setting up the SP via "Search," but that doesn't work either.

What's up with this?

What is the best way to stream HD video across a home network?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 09/06/2012 - 09:54
I have a Tivo premiere with a cable card in it. My cable provider is Verizon FIOS.

What is the best way to stream the HD output from my Tivo to a television in another room?

My Tivo premiere is hardwired to my router. I am interested in streaming from my Tivo, to the router, to some sort of device in another room that can capture the stream and feed it to an HD tv.

Would this product on amazon be the best solution? Or do you have an alternation suggestion?

Tivo Stream (downloaded files) question

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 09/06/2012 - 09:25
Question for some of the new "stream" users. Once a show/movie is downloaded to the ipad...are the files (show/movie) present in the main "VIDEOS" app on the ipad? or can you only view the downloaded shows/movies using the Tivo App?

How Poll: How Many Streams will TiVo Sell in the six months?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 09/06/2012 - 07:08
I've read somewhere that there are about 500,000 Premiere boxes in circulation out of the current million or so TiVo Retail subscribers. We can theorize that there may be something like 1,000 Streams already sold. How many subscribers and new subscriber will be convinced to buy the TiVo Stream accessory?

MoCA TiVo Elite not showing up on TiVo Transfer (Mac, FIOS)

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 09/06/2012 - 06:45
Okay, I searched all of the "related" topics and didn't see this one so I apologize if I'm asking a question that's already been covered. I just read this morning that Verizon FIOS is already enabled for MoCA so I decided to try and switch my TiVo Premiere Elite over to MoCA and was totally surprised that it worked and is super fast at transferring from my TiVo HD. Score!

Here's the downside. My MAC totally disappeared from the Now Playing list on the TiVo Premiere and when I look at TiVo Transfer (from Toast 10) on the MAC, only the TiVo HD shows up (not the Premiere Elite).

Does anyone know if there is some setting I need to change on my computer, the TiVo or anything else I might need?

Bonus question, to enable MoCA on my TiVo HD, would I still need an adapter or because FIOS is MoCA enabled, should it just work? (I can check this myself but I just figured I'd ask!)

Thanks for your help!

TiVo Stream Cost

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 09/06/2012 - 06:37
I have no problem paying 129.00 for something, but I was just wondering if anyone knows how TiVo came up with the price for this thing. Does the unit really cost that much to make? I'm no expert, but I have a hard time believing that the tech inside justifies that price. I know us diehards will buy it, buy for the mass TiVo, subscribers, .......?

Revolution Pilot: Hulu/Web now, airs 9/17/12 SPOILERS

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 09/06/2012 - 06:05
I think this show has potential. Of course I'm a sucker for shows with a dystopian/post-apocolyptic future.

I like the characters so far, and the show made me want to find out more about that world.

The swashbuckling fight scene near the end was pretty fun as well. I totally was surprised that the guy he was in the car with at the beginning was the General.

I hope they also get into some about how they're surviving, and showing cool non-electric ways of doing things. And specifics about the rules. For example fire works, and that means they should be able to build some sort of steam engine... and that could mean a train. Or steam powered trucks. Or whatever. I mean, the world wasn't totally going to hell in a handbasket before electricity was harnessed.

A while ago you guys enabled the "Only nag once" for the mobile apps like Tapatalk/ForumRunner.

It's off. Please enable it again. I don't want to get nagged every single time I re-start my mobile browser.
