CableCard bent pin, no CableCARD menus problem

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 10/04/2012 - 03:46
Short version: Missing channels on my Tivo HD so Comcast switched my 2 S-Cards to 1 M-Card. CableCARD menus don't work and can get basic cable channels only. Figured out that the Comcast Tech bent a pin in CableCARD slot 1. After unbent, reactivated with comcast, everything (CableCARD menus + all channels) working for 5 min, then back to basic cable only and can't access CableCARD menus.

What should I try next? Would Tivo be helpful in this situation? Why would the card work for 5 minutes then stop?

Long version:
- Got Tivo HD with lifetime years ago. Comcast was out of Mcards so they gave me two S-cards. Been working since then until:

- 9/29/12: subscribed to Showtime on Comcast's site in the morning. Wasn't getting it by that evening so called in. They said it would take more time.
- Another day passes and still not getting it, I notice more channels that I used to have are missing. they schedule a truck roll.

- 10/3/12: Tech arrives, checks signal levels (good), blames cablecard being old tech, especially the S-Cards. Didn't bring any Mcards despite my specific request during scheduling to make sure the tech had one. He goes and rummages around his truck and finds one. Kinda scuffed up so who knows what the source or condition was. Puts it into Slot 1, calls activation. Can't activate because when we try to go into the CableCARD menu, it says: "Your cable provider has no supplied any information for this card." He inserts firmly and ejects and repeats many times to no avail. Tech advises me to go exchange the card at Comcast office and leaves.

- I go exchange the card and put new one in. Can access the CableCARD menu, call into activation line, give them all the numbers, they send the activation signal. Can get basic cable channels but nothing above that, like ESPN, etc. Still no Showtime. A few minutes later, I can't access the CableCARD menu anymore. Phone people say that it takes a while for the card to download info so wait an hour.

- Four hours later it isn't working, call back in, they send activation signals, still nothing. They schedule appointment for Friday for CableCard expert bringing 5 Mcards.

- I decide to eject the card and try it in Slot 2. Gives me the Error 161-1 (or something like that). Switch it back to Slot 1 and notice its very hard to insert during the last portion of travel. It had been like that each time but I wasn't paying attention.

- Shining flashlight into the slot, I could see that a pin is bent. Looking in from the front of the Tivo HD, it is the bottom right corner pin. It's been squished over so it's touching the next pin over on the bottom row. Must have been bent while the tech did multiple ejects and reinsertions in the morning.

- I disassemble Tivo and straighten the pin out as much as I can. Try slowly inserting the card and it feels smooth going in. Take it back out and the pin looks mostly straight now. Reassemble and plug it all back in.

- CableCARD menu now works. I can go through all those diagnostic and config screens now. Get onto Comcast chat and they resend the activation signal. ALL CHANNELS WORK! Even showtime! Thank them, cancel appointment, have them notate the bent pin on my account.

- 5 minutes later, Showtime goes black. CableCARD menu goes back to: "Your cable provider has no supplied any information for this card." Channels back to basic cable.

Fifth Gear: Velocity Channel premiere 10/3/2012 (possible season discussion)

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 10/03/2012 - 23:57
For those of us (including me) who complained that the US version of Top Gear doesn't have enough fast cars, well Velocity (the channel formerly known as Discovery HD Theater) appears to have heard us. They brought Fifth Gear to our shores.

For those not aware, this is actually a continuation of the original TG:UK when it was cancelled in 2001, before it was reborn the next year under Jeremy Clarkson. Original hosts Tiff Needell, and Vicky Butler-Henderson, both race car drivers, came over from the original Top Gear and are still with the series 10 years later.

Except for one, the other current hosts also have racing backgrounds: Jason Plato and Ben Collins, whom TG:UK fans would remember as the man the BBC was trying to stop from identifying himself as the second "Stig." Only host Jonny Smith doesn't have a racing background. Ben Collins was not in this premiere episode however.

The show came to the US once before via Speed Channel. Tiff and Vicky were joined by a couple of other hosts who are no longer with the show. Speaking of The Stig, another Stig was featured in the Velocity Channel premiere episode: rally legend Stig Blomqvist, who was showing the proper way to drive an Audi A1 Quattro around a frozen lake.

Personally, I've always liked Fifth Gear, even during its Speed Channel run. I thought the chemistry between the hosts was better than Adam Carolla's The Car Show and certainly better than TG:USA. The presenters certainly have a lot more street cred than the hosts of those two shows.

Like Jeremy Clarkson, Tiff Needell can come off as a bit arrogant, but not nearly over the top as Jeremy. Vicky Butler-Henderson I think does a good job of keeping his ego in check. The others are new since the Speed Channel airing of the series so I don't have a real opinion of them yet.

Oh and for the fast cars: this episode's main topic was a showdown between several exotic convertibles including the Mercedes SLS convertible.

I enjoyed the first season of this show. Glad to see it back.

I'm glad Lemon and George broke up. I don't really care if Zoe and George get together, actually I like Zoe and Wade together. Lemon working at the bar could be fun.

I'm glad Ruby is sticking around. She and Levon are good together.

changed providers

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 10/03/2012 - 19:38
We recently changed from DirecTV to Dish as our provider. Our den TV is old and only has the coax input. The DirecTV receiver connected to the coax input of the TIVO and the TIVO used the coax out to run to the TV. The DirecTV coax output was on channel 73 and somehow we were able to tell the TIVO to look at channel 73 on the coax for the input. Now that we have the Dish receiver its coax output is on channel 60. How do I tell the TIVO to look at channel 60 of the coax? If I go to the "Video Hookup" section in the settings, it tells me to use the red, white, yellow direct hookup between the Dish receiver and the TIVO and it won't allow me to select the coax connection. I can't use the red, white, yellow direct connection in the den because the Dish system has just one receiver that feeds both TV sets. The Dish receiver is in the bedroom (with another TIVO) so only a coax cable runs down to the den TV from the receiver in the bedroom. I need the den TIVO to allow me to select the coax connection between the receiver and TIVO and to look for the input feed on channel 60. The den TIVO is a Series 2 TCD140060. Help!

with an upgraded Weaknees drive (I THINK 160G). I also upgraded the fans: The original fan made way too much noise for a bedroom.

I recently verified that it still works, at least to the extent of booting up, authenticating to the network, updating the software and doing a reset.

This unit is destined for Goodwill or other such disposition unless someone can convince me otherwise. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to craft an eBay auction, monitor it, deal with vetting the purchaser, etc.

At any rate, I'm posting this here in the event someone is interested, since this is a venue of enthusiasts. Thanks.

Actual disk size in XL4?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 10/03/2012 - 15:05
Something weird with the display on the TiVo XL4 that I noticed. The display on "My Shows" says that my disk is 36% full.

However, third party app shows the total space used by all of the programs currently on the TiVo is 1867 GB (~1.8TB). So how can a 2TB drive be 36% full if it already has 1.8 TB of data on it? What is TiVo reporting when they give the percent full?

Just curious. I keep expecting the meter to suddenly climb to 100% with the next program it records, or to give an error saying it has run out of space unexpectedly.

I have a Slingbox Solo being offered for auction on e-bay. This is a great unit to start slinging with. Worked well with my Series 3 TiVo. Here is the link.

search not finding programs

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 10/03/2012 - 13:14
Every once in a while, a program that I KNOW exists isn't found in search. For example, I wanted to record the presidential debate, so I searched for it, and "Presidential Debate" came up as a program option. But when I chose it, it said there are no programs available to record. Huh? Obviously there are. I was able to set up a manual recording (called "Presidential Debate" and available on numerous channels). But even then, when I went back to the search results under "Presidential Debate," it said no programs are available to record. (At the same time, it showed a check mark and said my program will record, which makes no sense.)

What is going on? Obviously the program is in my guide data since it came up while browsing time/channel. Why doesn't it come up in search?

This has happened, occiasionally, with other programs. Not just special news events, either -- there was some network show I had to do a manual recording for when it didn't show up in search.

"Go On" not record for anyone else? (10/2)

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 10/03/2012 - 12:46
Go On did not record for me last night. Didn't realize it until this morning. Anyone else have recording issues?

I have three different TiVos, and all three happen to have Go On set for SP (one on cable, the other two on OTA). None recorded it. The history shows it was not recorded as this episode was already recorded within the 28 day rule. But I believe it was a new episode?

I'm pretty anal about my recordings, and check twice a week (Wed & Sun) to make sure everything I *think* should record is actually set to record. I use a list from FutonCritic to compare to the To-Do List. FC clearly shows it as a new show, and that means on Sunday it was still on the To-Do List. But it dropped it sometime between Sun & Tues night.

Strangely, there are TWO listings in history, one for 8:30 and one for 8:31. Both give the same reason for not recording.

I find it hard to believe others wouldn't have this problem, as our guide data s/b the same. SO... anyone else?

PS: Any place to watch it with captions?

Thanks!

YouTube Sign-In Troubles

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 10/03/2012 - 12:16
I just created a new Google account to use so I could sign in on my Tivo and the Tivo keeps telling me the account and password don't match. I can log in and out of the account just fine on my computer, but the Tivo HD won't let me in.

Does anyone know what the problem is here? Do I need to give it time to sync this account somehow? Something else?

It is enough of a pain to type things in with the Tivo controller that I don't want to waste time doing that more than I have to do.

So, what's everybody watching tonight?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 10/03/2012 - 10:21
I was just checking my upcoming DVR recordings for tonight and noticed nothing listed. Seemed odd, nothing there for a Wednesday.

Then I remembered. If you miss the debate tonight, it won't be for lack of availability. At least 12 broadcast and cable channels on my provider are carrying it.

Who's got the popcorn?

premier working great

usually people/myself come here because of problems, i decided to change things up and report i have no problems with my tivo..worst thing i can remember is a lockup and reboot a few weeks ago. I do recommend rebooting every week just to keep things 'fresh' but i have no scientific basis backing up that it is beneficial..just a feeling.

lifetime TiVo Premiere with a Best Buy warranty

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 10/03/2012 - 09:21
I got a dual tuner TiVo Premiere earlier this year from Best Buy. Made it a lifetime unit as well. Also wound up getting the Best Buy extended warranty since it was 4yrs of total protection for about $20. Seemed like a better deal than Tivo's at $40 for 3yrs.

Anyway, as the world of technology constantly changes, I am now looking for a better whole home DVR solution that also involves not having to pay Comcast additional cable card fees. Therefore, the 4-tuner Premieres with one (or numerous) upcoming TiVo "minis" might be a good option (depending on the mini price) since it would take just one M-card.

To offset the price of this possible 4-tuner Premiere setup (w/ minis), I might then sell this lifetime Premiere (with a Best Buy warranty) on ebay. Can BB TiVo warranties be transferred to someone else? Or is strictly based on the buyer?

Undeletable Show

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 10/03/2012 - 08:48
I have a show stuck in the Deleted Items folder on my Premiere Elite. It has not expired from Deleted Items, even though other shows have expired normally. When I select it and choose "permanently delete", Tivo displays a "Please Wait" for a few seconds, and then returns to the list of shows without deleting anything.

I assume this bug was triggered because I tried to delete the show while it was streaming to a second Tivo (a Tivo Premiere). In other words, the program was on the Premiere Elite, and I started viewing it via streaming on the Premiere. While it was playing on the Premiere, I deleted it on the Premiere Elite, and it moved to the Deleted Items folder as I expected. I then tried to "permanently delete" the show on the Premiere Elite, and nothing happened. That seemed reasonable at the time, because the show was still playing on the Premiere. However, after I stopped the show on the Premiere, I still couldn't delete it on the Premiere Elite.

I've tried recovering the show and deleting it again, on both the Premiere Elite and the Premiere. I've tried streaming it to the Premiere again for a few minutes (which worked fine,) and then stopping it and deleting it. I've tried restarting the Premiere. Nothing worked.

The only thing I haven't tried yet is restarting the Premiere Elite, because I'm waiting for a gap in my scheduled recordings. I'm not very optimistic that that will solve the problem, though.

Any other suggestions?

WD20EURS for S3 OLED

Can anybody confirm that a WD20EURS drive will work in a Tivo S3 (OLED) unit? I don't care about getting the entire 2 TB, but if I can at least get 1 TB that works reliably, I'll be happy. I just ordered 2 from Amazon for $100 each.

:( so sad

Someone else said in last weeks thread, and I think I may also be a bit too vested in this show.

Clay still breathing doesn't help matters either. He needs to die a slow and painful death.

The Tara/Gemma/Wendy crap is really starting to wear on me now too.

Hopefully the Diosa/Cara Cara "merger" turns out to be a sorely needed change for the better.

In the last few weeks I have been having problems using this form in IE9, (with Win 7-64) the ads say "The webpage cannot be found" or sometimes the ads show, the form only loads part way. No problems using FireFox. Anybody else having problems with this form and IE9 (if anybody is still using IE9).
