So as we all know...mini does not come with SD menus . Normally I wouldn't care but I am using it on a older HDTV that is 4:3 aspect ratio and I didn't like the letter boxing on all the channels.
I discovered this by accident but if you want the full screen taken up...do this.
Goto settings and goto change resolution. Then goto "test resolutions". When it gets to 420p, hit thumbs up so it confirms that setting, then when it cycles thru 720p and the other settings..DO NOT THUMBS UP them. Just wait till it finishes cycling through. After its done...only 420p should be selected and the tivo will still use the Hd menus but it will now take up the whole screen instead of letter boxing.
Everything I read lists both at the same time as shown above. What am I missing?
I ordered a TiVo Mini from TiVo that shipped out Monday, but for grins I stopped in a local Magnolia Best Buy today and they had five of them on the shelf... I could not resist and purchased it on the spot (this was the Park Meadows Colorado location).
In anticipation of hooking the Mini up, I turned on MoCA on my Tivo Elite in the networking menu and also set one tuner up for remote viewing in the cablecard menu. I actually have ethernet throughout the house, but one advantage of using MoCA is that it will allow me to leave some network switches powered off, saving power, so that's why I opted to go the MoCA route.
Plugged coax into the Mini and booted it up. Someone made a comment that the Mini takes as long to boot as the Premiere. Not even close. I actually timed it. Mini takes about 2 minutes to completely boot up, the Elite takes close to five minutes.
The Mini ran me through some kind of "guided setup", but bizarrely it never asked me about my TiVo account, or what kind of service I wanted (monthly vs. lifetime). It clearly was connected to the internet as it got access to TiVo and did the entire connection sequence.
However at this point it simply popped a screen indicating it could not find any compatible TiVos and my only option was "try again" with an error code V70. There is no way to get out of this menu other than rebooting the box (that I or support could find).
I tried to reboot the Elite (a couple of times) and rebooted the Mini. I tried switching from MoCA to ethernet and still no joy. I tried forcing connections from the Elite, still no joy.
Finally in frustration I called TiVo. TiVo told me that they would need to activate this Mini (and they were actually confused as they for a while thought I was setting up the one that was shipped out yesterday and won't be here for another couple of days).... I asked why the guided setup never offered to do that and they had no explanation.
Activated lifetime service on the Mini and then did another forced connection on the Elite and then rebooted the Mini a couple more times. Still nothing.
Finally the support guy at TiVo told me to change the name of the Elite TiVo and then try again. Bizarrely (or by coincidence) after the next reboot the Mini downloaded some extra data on the connection attempt, and prompted me to go to my Elite and enable 1 or 2 tuners if I wanted live TV. I did that and all was working (finally). The tech had no idea what it was that got it going, he said sometimes changing a device name causes something to shake loose. He also said that perhaps I should not have turned on the 1 tuner for remote viewing prior to turning the Mini on.
Total time to get a product working that should have been 10 minutes tops? 3 hours. Big fail on that one.
The Mini itself is very very cool. The slight delay in tuning channels does not bother me at all. The HD guide is super snappy and "zoom" from the guide to the currently playing show is instantaneous. It's everything that the HD menus on the Elite should be but isn't.
Also, I do not see any ability to manage recordings or season passes on the Mini. Not sure why others have reported it has that capability, from what I can see it does not.
Very good purchase. I will activate the 2nd one when it shows up and might even go for a third when dynamic tuner allocation becomes available.
The two Minis will replace a sling catcher, TiVo HD and Slingbox. All told these items can be sold for about $600 which more than covers the cost of the 1st two Minis. Will also reduce "vampire" power consumption in my home by about 70 watts, which is nothing to sneeze at. Will also get rid of one cable card and outlet fee from Comcast, which will be good for at least $5 a month off of my bill.
All around, other than the setup fiasco I am satisfied with the product.
I recently had my first opportunity to use JMFS (on a 4-tuner, 500GB Premiere). Worked perfectly so a big thanks to comer. I used USB adapter cables insted of direct connecting to my MB so I expected it to be relatively slow and it finished 500GB in a bit less than 9 1/2 hours. I use Clonezilla to make a periodic clone of my PC hard drive (500GB) and it takes only about a third of that time. Granted, only one of the two drives is tethered via USB, but I wondered about the huge time difference. I also wondered what JMFS does differently than Clonezilla which uses dd as the underlying copy mechanism. I'm sure something is different otherwise folks would just use the dd on the MFS Tools disk to copy Premeire drives. I understand that JMFS would still be needed to do the Expand and Supersize but those are quick on their own. Will someone please help clear up my ignornace?
Cnet's Joshua Goldman confirmed earlier today that TiVo has no plans for the Mini to work with the 2-tuner base Premiere model. They haven't disclosed whether or not this is a technical issue - most are speculating its not. My guess is the lack of MoCA coupled with the lack of tuners and the likely number of Premieres that are already connected wirelessly led TiVO to this decision.
Let the bi*ching begin!
If so...did it default to the SD menus?
So when I transfer shows to my NAS using pyTiVo, they show up as two files per show:
<showname>.TiVo <- actual show
<showname>.TiVo.txt <- metadata file
Can I rename both using the Window Explorer rename (in other words, the F2 key), and will they then show up with those new show names when I view a share on NP on a TiVo? I'm not sure how the TiVo is able to link/pair up those files internally.
This has come up, because some of my wife's folders within shares contain a good number of eps, and my wife wants to see the shows in ep order.
I came up with an idea where I could create a DOS batch file to rename all shows to contain the ep number in the filename, then she could direct her TiVo to display NP in show name order.
BTW, my idea on creating this batch file is like this:
1. Do a DIR *.txt > filename.txt in DOS
2. Do a copy *.txt filename2.txt in DOS
3. Open filename2.txt in Excel
3a) do a text to columns command, then search for the episode parameter in column A, and column B should have the ep number.
3b) strip out all other rows so I just have a list of ep numbers
3c) open file filename.txt in Excel, and splice the two together to form a spreadsheet with filename and ep number in separate columns
3d) edit that spreadsheet to contain DOS commands: (RENAME <filename1> <filename2>, and save it as a DOS batch file, and execute it.
But before embarking on this, I'd like to know if this approach will even accomplish what I'm seeking.
Didn't they say one would be released at the time of the mini?
I have searched but not sure about definitive answers.
1. I have a Premiere with the JMFS 2T upgrade.
What is the best way to make a copy of this drive for backup?
2. The original hard drive has died in a friends Premiere. If he uses my original 1T as the source and creates a new 2T using JMFS will it work?
I've been gone from TiVo for a couple of years now (time really goes by fast), but last week I had the opportunity to do an interview about the early days at the company:
I thought some of you might enjoy the read and the reminiscing. Lots of good times.
And now I'll slip back into the shadows. Cheers all!
The TiVo Mini is up on the Best Buy site
Right now says "Coming Soon". Since Best Buy officially starts selling them on 3/17, I suspect that's when it will become active.
I am no longer able to transfer anything from either of my TiVo Premiers. I've tried TiVo Desktop on 2 different computers and rebooted both TiVos. It gives the error message that it can't find the file. There is no wireless involved. One TiVo is hardwired and one is on MoCA. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
I was happy to finally see Nick find out that Renard is not human. Hopefully we do not have to wait another two seasons to find out exactly what Renard is and what he is trying to do. After Nick wakes up, I would think that he will have a lot of questions for Renard. Even though Renard may not be completely evil, he certainly has wronged Nick multiple times -- sending people to kill Nick's aunt, working with Adalind to poison Hank (nearly killing him), not telling Nick about Renard's involvement with Juliette, and stealing Nick's key. Probably more I have forgotten.
Someone asked in another thread why Nick did not drink the potion when they first made it. I thought it was obvious that the potion was likely to take Nick out of commission for a while, so Nick could not drink it before confronting Renard, which he wanted to do immediately.
So, Adalind is pregnant, apparently with Renard's child. Why was she so happy about that? Is it going to get her powers back somehow? Or is it part of some larger plot with the guy in Europe?
Stan is the man. Loved how he set up the Rezident.
Looks like their spy genes have been passed on to Jr. He had good instincts and reacted viciously. (As viciously as a little kid could)
Took me a while to figure out who it was interrogating them. I knew it couldn't be U.S. but I was surprised when Granny walked out of the shadows.
I know the premiere has two tuners and it can be used for OTA analog signals. And i know the tivo elite has a digital 4 tuner.
My question is can a TiVo elite use OTA as long as the signal is digital? Or is all OTA analog signal? I know the new rule from the FCC said all TV needs to be digital, but not sure how far it has been accepted by stations across the country.
I live in the NYC area if that helps answer what type of signals are available over OTA for me.
Are SD menus an option on the TiVo Mini?
I have a Premiere XL4, a TiVoHD and a Series3, and use SD menus on the Premiere so they all have a consistent UI (and also because the family is used to the SD menus, and they're faster). I'm thinking of replacing the Series3 with a Mini, to save the $15/mo Comcast Outlet Service Charge I'm paying for the Series3's two cablecards.
How many megabytes of data per month does a TiVo Premiere use?
I realize that applications such as Netflix will use a lot of data but I am interested in how much data the TiVo uses (in both directions) just to provide all the necessary guide service not including things like Netflix.
Before I call a customer rep., I wanted to ask the group. My old TIVO was a Series2 DT 80hr. I did the one year contract and closed the account. I would like to get a P4 XL TIVO (with two Minis) and all with lifetime service . Is there anyway, I could get a MSD discount or a cheaper price? I noticed the TIVO Stream Bundle works with the regular P4 (minus the Stream and MOCA) but I wanted to try and get the XL. I was hoping TIVO was going to give new customers a Bundle package with the Minis but I guess not.
