AV Jack Wiring?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 03/13/2013 - 17:41
My mini is on the way, but I will need to use it with a TV that has DVI and stereo audio inputs. I have a HDMI to DMI Cable, but TiVo is not yet listing the cables for the AV port, from which I need to get stereo audio. Does anybody know how the AV jack is wired, in terms of Tip, Ring 1, Ring2, Body?

Streambaby and Mini

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 03/13/2013 - 15:29
I can confirm what was expected that you can't "stream" videos directly to the Mini with streambaby (because it's not really a stream but a copy with 1.1GB buffer limit). However I was able to get streambaby push functionality working. This is similar to pyTivo push where you can select a video to push to a series 4 unit, but you can do everything from the Mini itself and it doesn't rely on pyTivo. Then you can access the transferring show via the Mini, so an indirect way to play archived shows on the Mini.

I've never tried VidMgr which is another HME app which works with pyTivo to select videos to push but I would presume that should work on the Mini as well.

Spring is almost here and new and returning shows are in bloom!

SPSPS backdoor on a Mini

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 03/13/2013 - 12:22
One of the most useful SPS backdoor codes for me has long been SPSPS (Select-Play-Select-Pause-Select) which clears the play bar quickly when using trick play functions. Unlike all other SPS backdoor codes, since the introduction of "Pause Ads" it has been made increasingly more difficult to enter this code. The only reliable way to this point was to play a showcase video and enter the code while it is playing. That is a sure fire way to enter SPSPS with remote and have it stick.

Enter the Mini which of course doesn't have showcase videos and hence apparently no reliable way to enter SPSPS. I tried again and again to enter SPSPS with regular Peanut remote with the Mini but couldn't get it to work. Another strike against the Mini.
However, playing with it some more last night I found using the kmttg RPC Remote macro while playing back a recording seems to work very reliably.

So for those (apparently few) people that love the SPSPS code know that there is a way to enable it with the Mini despite lack of showcase videos.
(Also like for regular TiVos this backdoor is not sticky and needs to be re-entered upon reboot of the Mini).

TiVo Premiere with 2TB drive and Lifetime Service

I'm replacing one of my Premieres with a TiVo Mini. The Premiere has been upgraded with a 2TB drive and has lifetime service. I'm asking $500, and I'll pay for ground shipping to the lower 48. Let me know if anyone has any interest.

Veronica Mars movie -- if you help!

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 03/13/2013 - 09:54
Thought this deserved its own thread, rather than being in a bump of the She's Pretty Hot thread.

Oh my, this is awesome. Kristen Bell and VM creator Rob Thomas are doing a Kickstarter campaign to help finance a VM theatrical move. If they hit their goal, Warner Brothers has agreed to put the movie into production and distribute it.

From ew.com:

Quote: In the spring of next year, the Veronica Mars faithful could be watching their beloved heroine (plus her pals Wallace and Mac, bad-boy ex Logan, proud P.I. pops Keith, and more) on the big screen — as long as they kick in a few bucks right now to get things started. Today, Thomas and Bell are launching a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for a low-budget Mars movie that would be shot this summer. The goal: $2 million in 30 days. If they reach it, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution has agreed to put the movie into production and pick up the tab for marketing, promotion, and distribution. (The film would be released in the first quarter of 2014 for a limited-time theatrical run, before moving to VOD, iTunes, and other digital platforms.) If they don’t reach the goal: No movie. I am so in. Here's the Kickstarter page:

Let's make this happen, Veronica Mars fans!

How to get just audio out of a/v jack of mini

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 03/13/2013 - 09:22
Since my tv only has a hdmi port which doesn't do audio...I needed a AV cable which had RCAs on one end and 3.5mm jack on the other. I found a old camcorder cable which had a 3.5mm jack on one end and 2 RCAs on the other, a yellow one for video and a black one for audio. Initially when I pugged this into the mini and into the red/white ports on the TV...I got static on one channel.

After some fiddling...I found if I half inserted the plug into the mini both channels would work just fine. Just thought I'd share this and Save someone the expense of buying yet another Cable. This half inserted trick may also work if you use a 3.5mm to red/white RCAs cable as well.

An alternative idea to a TiVO mini

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 03/13/2013 - 09:09
OK, I was waiting for this TiVO Mini to come to the market before I moved on some other possible choices for having multiple live TVs in my home. Now that it has arrived, I might go another route.

Instead of getting a mini; $99 lifetime a Series 3 TiVo (since I have a Premiere 2-tuner) that I recently obtained from Craigslist for $40. Then simply throw a cable card in it for $1.50/month. Will not only essentially have a live cable box (with its own dedicated tuner), but also additional storage for recording programs (that can be transferred as needed), Netflix access and ability to have pyTivo.

I'm sure everybody's needs are different and you would probably go with a mini if you don't have a cable outlet nearby the needed TV. I personally am gonna try the above method for a guest bedroom that isn't used frequently, but what true benefit would a tivo mini have over just getting a cheap series 3 TiVo instead? Is it really just the fact that you would have a central access point (4-tuner Premier) to control all network activity? I also realize you can watch premium channels on a TiVo mini as opposed to them being blocked with my Comcast system.

Maybe there are some other factors? Just curious.

Is Netflix available on TiVo Mini?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 03/13/2013 - 06:54
OK, I am seeing all kinds of ads for this TiVo mini and they state it allows you to access internet content including Hulu, Pandora, Spotify, Youtube and more. However, in several online areas, I see NO mention of it allowing access to Netflix.

I'm a little concerned that this feature has been left out of the mini. I would think if its included, it would be a HUGE selling point and they would definitely include it in the descriptions. Can anyone confirm if the mini has Netflix access or not?

Do I HAVE to use a cable card?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 03/13/2013 - 06:32
Just bought a Premiere XL off ebay, and thinking about what I need to do to get it set up when it arrives.

I have a cable box on my TV that I don't have any other use for (included in my cable package) - can I connect this to the Tivo, or do I need to get a cable card?

Trick to get full screen on 4:3 tvs with HD menus

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 03/13/2013 - 00:22
So as we all know...mini does not come with SD menus . Normally I wouldn't care but I am using it on a older HDTV that is 4:3 aspect ratio and I didn't like the letter boxing on all the channels.

I discovered this by accident but if you want the full screen taken up...do this.

Goto settings and goto change resolution. Then goto "test resolutions". When it gets to 420p, hit thumbs up so it confirms that setting, then when it cycles thru 720p and the other settings..DO NOT THUMBS UP them. Just wait till it finishes cycling through. After its done...only 420p should be selected and the tivo will still use the Hd menus but it will now take up the whole screen instead of letter boxing.

TiVo Mini setup - Pain in the ass

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 03/12/2013 - 21:19
I ordered a TiVo Mini from TiVo that shipped out Monday, but for grins I stopped in a local Magnolia Best Buy today and they had five of them on the shelf... I could not resist and purchased it on the spot (this was the Park Meadows Colorado location).

In anticipation of hooking the Mini up, I turned on MoCA on my Tivo Elite in the networking menu and also set one tuner up for remote viewing in the cablecard menu. I actually have ethernet throughout the house, but one advantage of using MoCA is that it will allow me to leave some network switches powered off, saving power, so that's why I opted to go the MoCA route.

Plugged coax into the Mini and booted it up. Someone made a comment that the Mini takes as long to boot as the Premiere. Not even close. I actually timed it. Mini takes about 2 minutes to completely boot up, the Elite takes close to five minutes.

The Mini ran me through some kind of "guided setup", but bizarrely it never asked me about my TiVo account, or what kind of service I wanted (monthly vs. lifetime). It clearly was connected to the internet as it got access to TiVo and did the entire connection sequence.

However at this point it simply popped a screen indicating it could not find any compatible TiVos and my only option was "try again" with an error code V70. There is no way to get out of this menu other than rebooting the box (that I or support could find).

I tried to reboot the Elite (a couple of times) and rebooted the Mini. I tried switching from MoCA to ethernet and still no joy. I tried forcing connections from the Elite, still no joy.

Finally in frustration I called TiVo. TiVo told me that they would need to activate this Mini (and they were actually confused as they for a while thought I was setting up the one that was shipped out yesterday and won't be here for another couple of days).... I asked why the guided setup never offered to do that and they had no explanation.

Activated lifetime service on the Mini and then did another forced connection on the Elite and then rebooted the Mini a couple more times. Still nothing.

Finally the support guy at TiVo told me to change the name of the Elite TiVo and then try again. Bizarrely (or by coincidence) after the next reboot the Mini downloaded some extra data on the connection attempt, and prompted me to go to my Elite and enable 1 or 2 tuners if I wanted live TV. I did that and all was working (finally). The tech had no idea what it was that got it going, he said sometimes changing a device name causes something to shake loose. He also said that perhaps I should not have turned on the 1 tuner for remote viewing prior to turning the Mini on.

Total time to get a product working that should have been 10 minutes tops? 3 hours. Big fail on that one.

The Mini itself is very very cool. The slight delay in tuning channels does not bother me at all. The HD guide is super snappy and "zoom" from the guide to the currently playing show is instantaneous. It's everything that the HD menus on the Elite should be but isn't.

Also, I do not see any ability to manage recordings or season passes on the Mini. Not sure why others have reported it has that capability, from what I can see it does not.

Very good purchase. I will activate the 2nd one when it shows up and might even go for a third when dynamic tuner allocation becomes available.

The two Minis will replace a sling catcher, TiVo HD and Slingbox. All told these items can be sold for about $600 which more than covers the cost of the 1st two Minis. Will also reduce "vampire" power consumption in my home by about 70 watts, which is nothing to sneeze at. Will also get rid of one cable card and outlet fee from Comcast, which will be good for at least $5 a month off of my bill.

All around, other than the setup fiasco I am satisfied with the product.

JMFS Speed

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 03/12/2013 - 20:06
I recently had my first opportunity to use JMFS (on a 4-tuner, 500GB Premiere). Worked perfectly so a big thanks to comer. I used USB adapter cables insted of direct connecting to my MB so I expected it to be relatively slow and it finished 500GB in a bit less than 9 1/2 hours. I use Clonezilla to make a periodic clone of my PC hard drive (500GB) and it takes only about a third of that time. Granted, only one of the two drives is tethered via USB, but I wondered about the huge time difference. I also wondered what JMFS does differently than Clonezilla which uses dd as the underlying copy mechanism. I'm sure something is different otherwise folks would just use the dd on the MFS Tools disk to copy Premeire drives. I understand that JMFS would still be needed to do the Expand and Supersize but those are quick on their own. Will someone please help clear up my ignornace?

2-Tuner Support Not on the Roadmap

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 03/12/2013 - 19:58
Cnet's Joshua Goldman confirmed earlier today that TiVo has no plans for the Mini to work with the 2-tuner base Premiere model. They haven't disclosed whether or not this is a technical issue - most are speculating its not. My guess is the lack of MoCA coupled with the lack of tuners and the likely number of Premieres that are already connected wirelessly led TiVO to this decision.

Let the bi*ching begin!

Anyone use a composite cable with the mini yet?

If so...did it default to the SD menus?
