Upgrade TiVo Hughes DVR40 to 1T (power adapter issue)

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 05/06/2013 - 22:35
I fell for the 1T upgrade from Weaknees. I am a novice at computer hardware and I have a question. They surprised me by sending a SATA to IDE Adapter which threw a slight curve in my direction as I prepare to upgrade. One of the capacitors (see below) was bent against the the other one and is slightly loose. Should I take a chance and attach the adapter or get a replacement from WK? WK emailed me said it was no problem...

They also sent a new IDE cable at first saying I could still use my orig IDE cable or the one they sent; but they say "If your kit also came with a new IDE/drive cable, then be sure to replace the TiVo's cable with the included in your kit. So guess I should use it, right? I'm confused, thought this would easier but now they are confusing me with the adapter and the new IDE cable. Any help/ideas? I've contacted them but they have limited hours and it's hard to get a response let alone a person's name.

Tivo Series3 THD (TCD652160) LIFETIME 2TB (318HD Hours)

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 05/06/2013 - 18:53
This is a LIFETIME Series 3 (TCD652160) with a just upgraded (April 2, 2013) 2 TB drive. It allows for 318 HD hours! It also looks like the day we bought it from TIVO. Perfect condition, with the Box and all original books and accessories! I even tested and verified that the Power Supply output and Caps were perfect before installing the 2TB drive. I do not see how you can find a cleaner Unit anywhere!

Reason for selling after just doing the upgrade, is that TIVO made me an offer on a Premiere that we could not resist! Notice that the TIVO is powered on (see light in picture) and connected, but the cable card is now in the Premiere.

Price is $355 plus shipping (about $22 with Insurance), and I use PayPal.

No more free version of TiVo Desktop

Just got an email from TiVo stating:

Quote: Download the FREE TiVo Desktop software today
As of June 5th, 2013 the free version of TiVo Desktop for PC will no longer be available for download. TiVo Desktop for PC lets you enjoy your music and photos on your TV. You can also transfer shows from your TiVo DVR to your PC.* Take advantage of this last chance to download the software for FREE! You think they will have a replacement that costs money? Or are they just going to rely on third party software?

Two MoCA networks

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 05/06/2013 - 17:43
Is it possible to have the Premiere XL4 on one MoCA network with Minis, and have a totally separate one with a pair of adapters.

I am moving in with roommates soon, and I was thinking of putting my A/V stuff upstairs. That would be simple. The router, HTPC, main gigabit network, and HTPC would all be in one location, with MoCA and N900 going out through the house.

However, I am considering putting the A/V setup downstairs, but the router would stay upstairs. Since the XL4 and the HTPC would be downstairs, I would need a MoCA backbone to connect the router with 50mbps Comcast internet to the gigabit switch with the XL4 and HTPC downstairs. I could connect the other stuff through the XL4, but I don't want the XL4 bridging my main network, as the HTPC could end up sort of turning into a multi-TB fileserver, with some massive file copy operations. I was thinking of making a MoCA backbone, and then connecting the XL4 to Ethernet, and having the XL4 and Minis on their own MoCA network.

What I would need to do for that is to set them on different MoCA channels. With a 650mhz Comcast plant, it is possible per the MoCA spec, but I was wondering if it actually possible to the configure the equipment this way?

I could use a wireless bridge or try to figure out how to run wired Ethernet, but it would be a lot easier just to set up a MoCA bridge. I may eventually end up going the wired Ethernet route, but I'm not sure at this point if that's possible. Also, if I could get two networks running, I could put my laptop on a third MoCA adapter, right onto the backbone, so that I'd have faster access to the HTPC and 50mbps internet.

MoCA - Where to put the adapter?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 05/06/2013 - 16:34
Hello! I'm upgrading my standard Premiere unit to an XL4 (arrives tomorrow!) and i've also included one MoCA adapter to my order. I'm hoping to use my current premiere unit as the second room... but i'm not sure where I should place the adapter to get the best use out of it. \

If the XL4 has MoCA built in, where does the adapter go in this setup? Do I need to buy a second MoCA box? for the original premiere?

Free TiVo Desktop Discontinued Next Month

Zatz Not Funny! - Mon, 05/06/2013 - 16:33
TiVo will be retiring the free version of their TiVo Desktop PC software next month. And I can’t say it’s a bad idea, given years of neglect… and CCI Byte unpleasantries. While imagery alluding to a replacement TiVo Desktop or, perhaps, web portal streaming surfaced earlier this year, nothing has yet materialized. Until it does, TiVo [...]

Missing Media Access Key entry under Account & System Info

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 05/06/2013 - 10:37
Under the Account & System Info tab, the 2nd entry is completely missing. 'Media Access Key' is not there. This is not another missing Media Access Key thread.

I had the deck unplugged while I was trying to image the drive, when I returned that drive back and booted it up all was fine except for this. I forced a update which it did, but no change.
I waited a day, still no entry.

Anyone watching Nurse Jackie this season?

I'm surprised that there aren't any threads yet.

Jackie is doing her thing and really trying! I'm not liking the situation with her Brit MD friend. I'd like her to stick around.

Interesting developments with her dating........

The Moment - Notre Dame Football Coach - 05/02/2013

I enjoy this reality series but it also is a reality series where maybe some of the drama is made up. But it is heartwarming to watch. And in this case, at the end of the show they showed a picture of the contestant on the Notre Dame sidelines. Fabulous. The only change I would make to this series is always at the end of each episode, show where the contestant is today (or 6 months after the challenge or so)

Independent Lens - all seasons, all eps

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 05/06/2013 - 02:35
I wasn't sure if I should just start a thread for season 14, the current one or for all seasons.

I normally don't watch these films but I stumbled across "Seeking Asian Female" through another forum. More info at http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/s...male/film.html. This struck a chord w/me since I'm a male ABC (American Born Chinese).
Quote: Steven is an aging white man obsessed with marrying an Asian woman, dreaming of a devoted young wife. Sandy is the young, feisty, ambitious Chinese woman he finds online. This engaging documentary follows their tumultuous love story.

For years, twice-divorced airport garage attendant Steven has been writing to numerous women through an online dating site that specializes in connecting Western men with Asian women. At times, his pursuit seems like utter fantasy. He falls for a 24-year-old woman across the Pacific entirely through pictures and email. When she eventually breaks his heart, he meets another Chinese woman, 30-year-old Sandy. They become engaged, and she flies to San Francisco to marry him. ... My Mandarin is terrible but I seem to better off than Steven in the clips. I could understand most of that Mandarin in the clips w/o the subtitles.

My TiVo's set to record this ep.

Interesting... I stumbled across http://www.seekingasianfemale.com/ and http://www.indiewire.com/article/201...g-asian-female as well. I got a chuckle out of http://www.seekingasianfemale.com/screenings/ when I saw a mention of angryasianman.

The Amazing Race Finale OAD 05/05/13

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 05/06/2013 - 00:37
That was actually a rather satisfying finale for me.

Glad to see Bates and Anthony win it. No major hose jobs because of bad cab drivers was a huge plus!

Cannot believe ANY of them actually thought they were getting a picture with the President!

One thing for any of those familiar with jewelry - and this first came to my attention on Undercover Boss a couple of weeks ago with Jackie - the fitness center worker who was cussing at the customers, etc. - but it looked like Katie was wearing something similar at the finish line tonight...

It was a necklace that looked like a simple gold chain with a cross on it; but the cross was mounted sideways where one end of the chain connected to the top on of the cross and the other end was connected to the bottom - so the cross didn't dangle in what would be considered an upright position, but was sideways. Is there some signifigance to this that I am not aware of? Some new style or something? Just not my cup of tea.

Convert .avs MP4 WMedia to Tivo

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 05/05/2013 - 23:27
I found tons of programs to convert TIVO files to the computer/DVD, but not the other way around. I download about five programs touting to convert to TIVO, but no such thing. I found one that was showing promise, but it stalled. I have a Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra Plus NAS which supports viewing of files (I'm watching one right now). One program even touted TIVOs blessing, but no go ..... any thoughts.

My TIVO2 has a stuff I'd like to transfer and not takeup space on the box. I just wish my Mini supported network files.

but I can always count on the Tivo Community to be there in times of Tivo terror.
