Verizon FiOS now charging whopping $5 per card

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 09/28/2013 - 13:50
As of September 2013, Verizon is now charging $5/month for each CableCARD. Absolute highway robbery!

Optimum (Cablevision), my previous cable provider only charged $2 per card. Comcast customers get their first card free of charge and second card at a subsidized cost if its for use in the Series3. Meanwhile Verizon customers with S3 are getting screwed over and now paying $10 per month, QUADRUPLE what a Comcast customer pays to operate an original Series3 OLED.

What can be done about this? Aren't FCC rules and regulations in place to ensure cable companies don't engage in this kind of unethical price gauging aimed at discouraging use of third party hardware??

CableCARD/Tuning Adapter Issue Charter Rancho Cucamonga, CA

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 09/28/2013 - 13:43
I am having an ongoing issue with my Tivo Romeo Pro tuning in certain premium and premium HD channels on Charter Rancho Cucamonga's switched digital system.

Additionally I am only able to record 4 shows, not 6 at a time.

My CableCARD is Cisco and the firmware is OS Ver: PKEY1.5.2_F.p.1601

Charter has been out over a half dozen times and switched out the CableCARD and Cisco Tuning Adapter over and over again.

When everything is rebooted I get all of the channels but within 20 minutes they start dropping. Even the ones that seem stable, can randomly drop and I end up with a recording of a black screen.

Charter is blaming Tivo.

How can I have resolve this ASAP?

View TiVo content in Web browser on PC?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 09/28/2013 - 12:33
I believe someone mentioned within the past few months that they saw a demonstration at one of the trade shows for streaming TiVo content to a Web browser on a PC. Is anyone aware of plans for TiVo to actually make this available? This would save me the expense of an HD HomeRun (plus Comcast's additional outlet fee & CableCARD) so I could watch broadcast TV on my PC. (Comcast recently encrypted ALL channels in my area which renders the clear QAM tuner card in my PC useless.)

(This would be streaming content from a Roamio Plus/Pro.)

Failure to record 'No longer in guide'

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 09/28/2013 - 11:53
This past week I've had three instances where my Roamio Plus with upgraded 3TB hard drive has failed to record a show due to the show being 'no longer in guide' according to the Tivo history. I am on Comcast in Salt Lake City, UT.
The three instances this week were:

Tues 9/24 New Girl at 8pm on channel 655 (FOX). It was aired as my recording for The Mindy Project following New Girl recorded properly and had the end of New Girl on it due to padding.

Wed 9/25 Top Chef Masters at 8pm on channel 707 (Bravo). A later airing was a recorded. A lineup change for this channel did occur on 9/17 - the guide info was for the East Coast feed originally while I receive the west feed. This probably explains this issue.

Thurs 9/26 The Michael J Fox Show at 8:30 on channel 653 (NBC). The episode at 8pm recorded properly. A repeat of the episode was recorded on Fri 9/27. When I look back at the guide data the 8:30 episode shows up, so no idea why it didn't record.

Any thoughts on why this might have happened? I never saw this in my 3 years with my Premiere.

I like the mini, but doesn't work with Media Share (pytivo)

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 09/28/2013 - 11:00
I like the mini, but it doesn't work with my Media Share (pytivo) - this is something I am hoping TiVo will eventually fix.

I installed the Mini yesterday and immediately noticed that I cannot access my video library with it.

That didn't necessarily surprise me, neither pyTiVo nor TiVo desktop support MRS and the Mini doesn't have local space for a transfer. But it is still a little disappointing. I am hoping that TiVo will provide some future solution.

- Automatically Initiate an MRV transfer onto the host device, or
- allow MRS using the TiVo desktop solution, or
- create a new local streaming app using the Opera HTML5 App Store.

Tivo Mini looses connection when turning off TV with Roamio connected

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 09/28/2013 - 09:31
I have Roamio Plus and 3 Mini's. I've found that when I turn the TV off that's connected to my Roamio the Mini looses connection to the Roamio, an error message is displayed. If I go back to the Tivo Menu the Mini is still connected to the Roamio as I can view the recorded shows and watch/stream the Live TV.

I have MoCa bridge set on my Roamio with connection to my LG SmartTV so maybe when the TV turns off it's funkin' up the connection. Anyone else encountering this?

Buying a Tivo for my parents

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 09/28/2013 - 08:59
my folks have decided to get a tivo with OTA. I"m looking at the base S5 with lifetime.

I don't see why i couldn't buy it under my account & get the multi service discount for a total of $600. Activate it at my home & do the first service update/set up so i can get it sorted correctly 'cuz face it- my folks are not the most technically inclined. Then give it to my folks.

is there any reason why this isn't ok? Billing wise or technical wise?

Only 5 of 6 tuners work - is that b/c of Mini?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 09/28/2013 - 06:05
I have the Roamio Plus, and was tapping the "Live TV" button this morning to switch between tuners, just to make sure they were all working. Five of the tuners work fine, but the sixth tuner gives me a "Channel not authorized" message, even for channels that I know I have. I tried this with 3 or 4 different channels.

Is this because of the Mini I have in the house? Will the Mini hold onto that tuner in a situation like this, where it isn't essential to the Roamio? We last watched that Mini before bed last night. It's fine if it is, but I want to make sure that my Roamio isn't defective.

Tuning adapter with cable modem on same outlet

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 09/28/2013 - 00:35
Can someone tell me the proper way to hook up a cable modem, tuning adapter, and tivo using the same outlet.

I recently moved the cable modem/router from one room to the same room as the roamio. I had very few problem with tuning problems with the cable modem in another room, now with it on the same outlet I am receiving quite a few more tuning issues.

It comes out of the wall into a two way splitter. One end goes into the tuning adapter and uses the pass though to go to the Tivo. The other end is going into the cable modem/router.

Is that the correct way or am I missing something?

Looking for Ideas on Resolving MoCa Networking Issue

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Fri, 09/27/2013 - 22:22
This seems to be so simple, but it's got me scratching my head. First, let me preface this by saying I have 1 Roamio Plus and 3 Mini's currently working on my MoCa network. I have Comcast and have a MoCa adapter connected to my modem and router. I have my Roamio connected via coax on separate floor. The Mini's are scattered throughout the rest of the house connected by coax / MoCa connection. These are all working fine, streaming to the Mini's.

So here's what's troubling me. I wanted to split the coax at my Mini in the basement so I could connect my SmartTV via ethernet (hard wire) instead of wireless. I installed a splitter at the coax coming out of the wall. I then connected the coax from splitter to my Mini. The Mini is then unable to get a MoCa connection. I can't think of any reason why a coax line now running to the Mini and getting a MoCa connection is unable to get a MoCa connection after putting in the splitter.

I've tried connections at other coax connections coming directly from the wall to my other Mini's and same issue, no MoCa connectivity. I've also tried a different splitter as well as a different coax cable.

Seems this should be simple to just put a splitter in and maintain the MoCa connectivity. So I'm looking for ideas as to why and how to resolve this.

FIOS - pixilation on Premium channels

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Fri, 09/27/2013 - 19:38
I think I have read a thing or two on cable card issuer with FIOS, so I thought I would start a thread.

I am going to try a few different attenuatiors, but it is odd that it only happens with the premium channels.

Nope: as I expected, the attenuators didn't work. I know Margaret reported:

Quote: The NEXT update (maybe in two weeks?) should include:
- a fix for the "green switch" problem
- support for older versions of CableCARDS from FiOS I hope that will fix the pixilation on Premium FIOS channels

Pro black-screen tuner failure, but Mini works!

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Fri, 09/27/2013 - 19:01
Hi Folks,

I'm a Cox customer in south San Diego county, which is SA/Cisco territory. I purchased a Pro and a Mini a couple of weeks ago and have been experiencing an intermittent live-tv tuner failure issue. At times, 50% of the channel changes fail with a black screen. At other times it works well as I select sequential channels with the channel up/down button.

I've looked at other threads here containing various tuner problems, and I've seen this black-screen issue mentioned before. Most of the threads seem to reference failures to use all of the tuners available on the cable card, but I'm not sure that's my problem. As a test, I started six simultaneous record sessions, all channels encrypted as reported by the CCI variable being 0x02. I confirmed that the six encrypted channels were actually being recorded by looking at the content, first with the Mini and then with the Pro. All was well. I then stopped the recordings and confirmed once again that all six had appropriate and unique content. I would assume that all six of my tuners are working correctly.

But this is interesting: the problem is mostly non-existent when tuning live-tv on the Mini! I've tested this by confirming that the Pro was failing most channel changes, then running upstairs to find that the Mini was working perfectly on the SAME channels the Pro was failing! I repeated this experiment a number of times with similar results. So why would the Mini's tune requests to the Pro work, while the Pro's own requests to itself fail? This doesn't make any sense, but it is what it is, and suggests an issue in the Pro itself.

Some threads here suggest that the cable card's firmware needing updating. But wouldn't stale cable card firmware affect both Pro and Mini channel selection?

Here are my stats:

90-db signal strength
35-db SNR
Manuf ID: 259
Firmware: PKEY1.5.3_F.p.0601

Cox also supplied a Cisco STA1520 Tuning Adapter.

For the record, the Mini does fail to tune from time-to-time, I'd guess maybe 1% of channel changes, versus 50% on the Pro (at times). I've also had the "waiting circle" a time or two that required a Mini reboot.

Don't get me wrong, the Pro and Mini are great, and I'm happy with the purchase. I'm sure that Tivo will fix this issue soon since it (or a variant) seems to be affecting multiple customers. Indeed, I'm going to purchase a few more Mini's.

the infamous $700+ s3 who swapped for a mini

What did u get for it? I'm thinking maybe $200.... Hard to part with the dinosaur that cost an arm and a leg 6 yrs ago. Seeing how good the mini is w/ the roamio thinking its time.

At first I thought I'd miss the tuners but I've mastered multi tuner watching on the mini, simply record the other show and switch between live TV and the recorded show. Tuner problem solved.

Did u say goodbye?

TiVO Networking...

Not sure this is the right forum but...
I'm going to be hooking up an ethernet connection to a friend's TiVO. She does not have a computer or a router and would have no use for either one. But she does have internet service via a Comcast modem. Can the ethernet wire be hooked up directly to an ethernet port in the modem without a router? I"m sure I'm asking a silly question, but I don't know much more than my friend does, but it seems there should be a way to hook it up without installing a router. She had been using dial-up for her connection, but since it was thru Comcast's phone service, it never worked properly and now she has no guide info.

New bill proposed regarding cable companies and cablecards

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Fri, 09/27/2013 - 12:15

Love (not!) the comment in the article:

--- [snip] ---
"This is common sense legislation that recognizes the significant harms imposed by the integration ban, which since 2007 has forced consumers with leased set-top boxes to bear over $1 billion in unnecessary costs," said Michael Powell, a former FCC chairman, in a statement.
--- [/snip] ---

Why is it not common sense that passing this legislation would allow the cable companies to not have to compete?
