I miss my TiVo - DirecTV hardware is meh...

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 11/12/2013 - 08:29
So I've looked around the forums and it seems all of the posts regarding DirecTV and TiVo are at least two years (if not more) old.

TiVo has focused on cable companies and making sure they can use cable cards to receive and decrypt programming. What about satellite providers that don't use cable cards? I moved over to DirecTV recently and got the Genie multi-room DVR since it was specially offered and had better functions than the TiVo that is offered with Direc...

So, why is the TiVo that is offered with DirecTV so far behind the Genie as far as hardware is concerned? The new TiVo Roamio seems to match (or beat) the Genie and the Hopper (for the Dish people)... but I can't get it for my satellite service. What's up with that? TiVo and DirecTV teamed up for the second time several years ago, but it also looks like they haven't updated their hardware since then either. Is their partnership fading, or non-existent?

My old cable provider is no where near the quality or programming choices of DirecTV - that's why I switched... Where DirecTV fails is it's DVR. The Genie SOFTWARE is no where near the quality of TiVo's software. The suggestions are a joke, the fast forward and rewind is skippy and not smooth. The way it fails when reading a bad sector on the hard drive is horrible. The recording season passes is not in any way logical or elegant. This is a great opportunity to kill the Genie that TiVo is missing.

I want my TiVo back, but I want to keep the DirecTV service - having my cake and eating it too would be nice...

I miss my TiVo, but don't want to give up my better quality programming.

PLEASE TiVo - make the newer models available to satellite consumers as well!! You could kill the satellite provider hardware hands down...

Mini + Roamio w/ethernet; Mini loses connection on recording show

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 11/12/2013 - 08:26
A week or two ago I bought a Roamio and Mini. I have them both wired with Ethernet. I'm experiencing this problem:

I'm on the Mini watching a show being recorded by the Roamio. Before the end of the show, the Mini loses connection. I get the alert, I press reconnect or whatever the option is, navigate back to the show, and restart and finish without any other problems.

This only seems to be happening on shows that are still being recorded. Is this a known problem?

Another good episode, I thought. Gives a good explanation to all the recent comments about why Barney "changed".

It was also good to see Marshall (Jason Segel) back with the cast.

I bought one more Roamio Pro than I ended up needing. It's past the return window, so I'm selling the extra. It's brand new and still sealed in the original box. $500 shipped to the lower 48.

Lock a recording

I like the "keep until I delete" feature, but it would be nice to lock a recording so it wouldn't be deleted during a group delete. A locked recording could only be deleted after it was unlocked.

Help With Premiere 4 Signal Issues

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 11/11/2013 - 22:23
Hello, hoping someone can help me with this as I seem to be stuck in Purgatory between the mercy of TiVo and Mediacom...

Yesterday (Sunday 11/10) as of about noon my time, I was watching TV on my Premiere 4 when all of a sudden, the picture went black and got the message "Searching for a signal on this channel (V52)..." I rebooted my TiVo with no success and tried to re-seat the CableCARD. I ruled out the cable run to that outlet by directly connecting the coax directly to my TV as well as trying my working Premiere AND my Mediacom-supplied digital box in which all of that worked great... So it's not a cable/line issue... I'm using Moca and I can still use Youtube, Netflix, etc so my coax is connected as properly as I can check it!

I called up TiVo support Sunday and went through their troubleshooting, in which they blamed it on the CableCARD. I then took my working CableCARD in my premiere, inserted it in the non-working Premiere 4 and had Mediacom pair it to the P4 - no success, I paired it back to my working premiere and it came right back. Today (Monday 11/11) I swapped CableCARDS and contacted Mediacom to pair it to my Premiere 4 - lo and behold, the problem still persists. I also tried this on other known working outlets in my house... Not using any surge protectors and plugged directly to the outlet, etc...

I checked the DVR Diagnostics on my TiVo and I'm getting 0dB SNR with no signal lock or program lock on all four tuners and the modulation is steadily switching between QAM 64 and 256 (which is odd since the Premiere 4 doesn't have an analog tuner)... The OOB is getting an SNR of 23dB with a positive signal lock and a VCT ID of 124.

The Conditional Access menu is showing just 4 lines of information with Con: Yes EBCP: Yes Val: V 0x00. TiVo is saying the CableCARD is the culrpit. We did the 3-way call with Mediacom and they state that everything is looking in order there and sent hits and pairing signals multiple times... And again, 3 different CableCARDs (and at least 1 known working card) and I'm getting the same info to show for each one (and the working card was successfully re-paired right away with my known working TiVo). After talking with TiVo support again today for over an hour, they are blaming Mediacom and the Card again...

Sorry this is a long synopsis but I'm at my wits end. I've had this Premiere 4 since March and as of right now, it is a very expensive paperweight. TiVo wants me to try yet another card while I don't believe it's a card issue... I believe it's a hardware issue somewhere. I just want it to work and right now, I'm just getting shuttled back and forth.

Anyone have any advice or suggestions before I'm driven to drink? LOL

Thank you!

Divorce Not Going Well

Good evening folks,

So... after buying a new TiVo Roamio and moving my TiVo (S3) HD to my office, I decided that I didn't need the extender anymore - it was just sucking needless power and giving me storage space I didn't need.

So I read up on what to do to disconnect an external drive. Followed the instructions, unplug TiVo, unplug external drive, plug in TiVo, when prompted, clear, thumbs down three times, hit enter, and all should be right in the world.

Except that after I did that, the TiVo would "process" my command, reboot, and bring me back to that screen of "hey, we don't see that external drive" screen. Do that thumbs down thingy again. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Alright, so my TiVo is having separation issues. So you know what, it's not worth the headache, I'll plug the external drive back in.

Yeah... that made my TiVo angry. Now it reboots, "Welcome! Powering up..." then "Almost there. Just a few minutes more..." and then GSOD - Serious problems, TiVo will try to fix it and it may take 3 hours. It reboots only a few seconds after the GSOD, back to "Welcome! Powering Up..."

This has been cycling for a while.

Did I just kill a perfectly fine TiVo?

I'm handy when it comes to computers - I fix them for a living. But thumbing through the 52 pages of some posts on the forum made my eyes blurry and searching just kinds brought me back to those posts.

I don't mind a project to make this work again, and I don't care about the programs - obviously since I was divorcing the drive and knew that was going to clear most of the programs on it.

Any direction is greatly appreciated... Thank you.

So, my Cable service, Service Electric Cable TV, decide to encrypt my entire service and go entirely digital. Now I have no signal on my TiVo with a CableCARD. I spent over an hour with 2 people troubleshooting this and still nothing. They tell me that there is a problem with some TiVo’s and cards not working and they are working with TiVo to fix this. Any help here? My TiVo is a Premiere Series 4 2-Tuner model.

TiVo Premiere Lifetime Manual Recording $60

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 11/11/2013 - 18:41
Is anyone interested in buying a used Premiere that has an account status that stays on "in good standing" even though it has no TiVo service? It has old software that supposedly allows this. I cannot guarantee how long it will continue to work this way, but it appears to be permanent. If it is connected to the internet, the software will be updated, and this functionally will no longer work unless you purchase TiVo service. I have not modified the hardware or software in any way. It is functioning the way the programmer made it.

The bad side effects that I am aware of caused by using a Premiere with no internet connection in this way:
The clock is wrong, and it continues to drift.
A nag message pops up on the screen occasionally stating guide data has run out or there is no service.
The channels numbers will not match your channels unless you live in or near West Palm Beach, Florida and have Comcast. Even if you live near WPB, some channel numbers have and will change.

The hard drive size is the standard small size with two tuners. The model is TCD746320. The manufacturer date is July 31 2010. Only the TiVo, power cord and remote are included.

I am selling it because I decided to use a HTPC. It can be seen in the video shown here: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...=504978&page=2

$60 Local pickup in West Palm Beach, Florida, or $80 with shipping to United States contiguous 48 states.

To do list conflicts don't update

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 11/11/2013 - 17:48
This seems similar to an issue I found on the Premiere forum, but it isn't.

The issue is that I discovered a conflict in my to do list. There were five shows from four season passes set to record in the same time slot.

I then deleted the season pass that was attempting to record the fifth show.

The to do list now shows that the show that was causing the conflict is no longer set to record and all four remaining shows WILL record. OK so far.

BUT, if I press the red "C" button to show only conflicts in the to do list, the original conflict remains and pressing INFO on the show that will not record shows that the original conflicting show is still set to record.... even though per the regular to do list it is not.

This could be an issue where the conflict list hasn't updated yet, but it has been several hours.......

Do Retail DVRs Have a Chance?

Zatz Not Funny! - Mon, 11/11/2013 - 17:16

There’s a lot of bad news on the retail set-top front. According to the NCTA, the number of retail CableCARD devices deployed has dropped to 600,000 from 603,000 since August. No big surprise. Despite a few flickers of life, the retail CableCARD market has been on a path of decline for years. But then there’s [...]

Manual Recording Anomaly

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 11/11/2013 - 15:01
Since the return to Eastern Standard Time last week I've noticed an anomaly with manual recording. Last week and this week I wanted to set manual recordings for The Good Wife and The Mentalist due to NFL games running late. Here's what happened:

* Both weeks when I set the recording for The Good Wife I received a message saying the recording time had already passed. For example, this week I set the time from 9:45PM to 10:45PM (I performed the action at 7:45PM). A message popped up saying the starting time had already passed (which, obviously, it hadn't). I clicked on OK and the recording was then set properly.

* Last week because of the very late start time I set The Mentalist to start at 11:15PM and end at 12:15AM. TiVo refused to accept the manual setting, saying the end time had already passed. Apparently it wouldn't (or couldn't) recognize that 12:15AM was the next day and not the current day.

I've never had this issue before. Please note I have not yet received the new Fall Software Update, so that clearly isn't part of the problem. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I hate you Tivo...

I just heard an explosion down the street. TV was up too loud to tell where it came from. Grabbed my remote to rewind and listen again, and it won't work on life.

Speed of channel changes Roamio vs. Premiere

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 11/11/2013 - 13:17
I have two premiere's and am considering upgrading to Roamio. I currently use the old style "standard definition" display, menus, etc. because they display faster than the HD versions. channels seem to appear quicker (less time with black screen), guide seems faster, et. IN other words the entire user interface experience seems quicker with the SD settings .

Is the old style SD menu option even available on the Roamio, and if it's not are the HD menus, guide, channel changes, etc. quicker on the Roamio than the HD menus on a premiere?
