Searching for signal on series 2

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 01/20/2013 - 19:42
I have several Toshiba SD-H400 series 2 units. In the past, I've occasionally had a message of "Searching for signal on satellite in" after booting up. Usually, rebooting would solve this problem. I just purchased another one of these because it has a lifetime plus subscription. I have gone thru guided setup for both cable and satellite and in each case got the searching for signal on (cable/sat). Both are properly working when connected directly to the tv. Several reboots have failed to get a signal. Obviously, since this has the lifetime sub, I want to get it working. I have a couple other identical units I can use for parts if I need to. I don't want to lose the lifetime sub which I assume is stored in the OS and not the hard drive. (btw, the unit functions just fine playing from the now playing list) Any thoughts on where the problem lies? Can I put the motherboard and hard drive from this unit into a different one? Or put the I/O board from another unit in this one? Any help would be greatly appreciated:)

Tivo and Comcast.. Yeah again..sorry

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 01/20/2013 - 19:11
So I did a little digging and didn't find much so I'm sure everyone here is tired of Comcast and Tivo questions. But I could really use some help cus I'm kinda confused. Maybe someone can explain something for me.

SO my setup is, Comcast Internet Only.. No TV Package. Yeah yeah I know.. give me a second. And a Tivo Premiere.

So anyways, if i plug my cable line into my TV, just my tv. I get all kinds of local channels and HD channels. But then if I plug the same cable line into my Tivo.. Nada, I get nothing. So I was reading about this mapping junk. How can this be? I don't understand how my TV can find channels just fine. But the Tivo plays dumb? Or am I just doing something wrong?

Any advice would be great. The other option I have is to get an Antenna, but I only get Washington DC channels, and I'd rather get Baltimore Channels, which is what Comcast gives me on my TV.. Ugh

Thanks in advance.

Please help with TIVO Series 2

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 01/20/2013 - 17:38
Hi, I'm trying to connect my series 2 TIVO to an Insight mini box. Everything is going smooth until the screen says select your cable box manufacturer. The bottom of the mini box says "Made for insight by TECHNICOLOR" but they are not listed in my choices to select.
Please help this noobie if you can.
thanks,
Steve

Netflix and Premiere

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 01/20/2013 - 16:40
I notice several threads about Netflix streaming here and on the HD forum, but nothing recent. I just got the Premiere...it is on the latest software. I connect OK to Netflix, but when I start running a movie, it will load and start running, but within a couple of minutes, the video will go black while the audio keeps running. The only way out of it (that I know) is to go back to live TV, try TiVO again, but the same thing happens. I'm connecting with a G adapter with an N router, if that matters (TiVO told me that would not be a problem, and I have had no problems connecting to the TiVO service with that setup, and also streams Comcast OnDemand fine). I may try calling TiVO tom'w, but wonder if it's a Netflix problem.

TCD240 Power Supply Schematic

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 01/20/2013 - 14:55
Had the power supply go out on my TCD240 box. Fortunately, I had a spare unsub unit stored away for just this purpose so I'm back up. Initial indications are that it is the 5 volt side that is bad. No bulging caps, no obvious hot spots on the board so maybe it's just the regulator. here's the question: does anyone have a schematic for this thing?

BBC Blu-Rays

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 01/20/2013 - 13:33
I have purchased a number of Blu-Ray sets for TV series. I noticed that they have all been 1080i. This is very frustrating as some of my playback devices do not like interlaced video. I will lose video resolution if I fix this problem. For all of my other Blu-Ray TV series, I have just ripped the proper m2ts files and called it good.

Is there a good reason other than being cheap for a release to be 1080i?

My ideas for improvement

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 01/20/2013 - 12:54
FWIW: I did use the feedback survey provided here.

1) Linux native client
2) NHL GameCenter Live
3) Redbox Instant
4) ALL menus in HD

1) TiVo is a Linux-based product and should embrace it roots. I use Ubuntu as my primary OS and have a Windows box only for transfering TiVo recordings and to provide my wife access to Microsoft Office. By requiring Windows and Mac, you are basically requiring subscribers to purchase additional equipment to fully use your product.

2) As I no longer have a cable or satellite provider by choice (there never seems to be anything on) I would like to use my Lifetime TiVo for everything rather than flipping between TiVo, Xbox, Sony BluRay. My Xbox and BluRay both have these options.

3) Same as 2, pretty much with a couple edits: As I no longer have a cable or satellite provider by choice (there never seems to be anything on) I would like to use my Lifetime TiVo for everything rather than flipping between TiVo, Xbox, Sony BluRay. My Xbox and BluRay both have these options coming soon.

4) In the words of ESPN's Michael Irvin "C'mon man!!!" Digital TV (HDTV) was legislated in 1996, available in 1997 and became the churn reducer for DirecTV in 2002 (along with the HR-250). This is 2013 ... and TiVo is still dragging behind on an easy update. I have had 3 OTA HD stations since 2003 and today they are all HDTV on my UHF loop, which is my TV provider. It is really irritating to need to look at something on my TiVo and need to wait for the unit to flip between 1080p, 1080i, 720p and 480p. They are images for crying out loud. They do not require much of a code update other than to update the actual images and the symlinks!

All of the above suggestions will make TiVo the leader again. Roku currently owns TiVo in the streaming media markets, Sony and Microsoft are both working on it. I can tell you that if these services are available I will purchase a new top end unit with lifetime service for my other TV. Now I would never ask TiVo to bow to one single subscriber, however, the TiVo Community (TCF) has clearly illustrated the customer demand for these features. The real product is the function and the UI and TiVo has been lacking in leading these areas for sometime.

Review Thumbs screen not working on TiVo Premiere

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 01/20/2013 - 12:53
l have TiVo Premiere XL - a few old or so. It's begun recording a lot of movies (bc my wife tends to record movies), so I wanted to remove some of the thumb ratings from movies, esp those we didn't really like. Movies take up a lot of space and I'd much rather have 5 tv shows in place of each movie in the suggestions. When the Suggestions start filling up with movies, there's not room for much else.

Anyway, on the HD Menus I went to "TiVo Suggestions" and then scrolled to the bottom and selected "Improve my TiVo Suggestions". It brings up the "Review Thumbs" screen that I expected, but after a moment a message appears which says "This screen allows you to review thumbs for programs you've already rated. Please rate a few programs and return to this screen to review them".

I have plenty of thumb ratings, so that should not be an issue. As I said, I've been using this TiVo for a few years. I tried rebooting... I still get the same message. I tried setting it to SD Menus and going to my Suggestion and hitting 'Enter'... I still get the same screen with the same message.

Any idea how I can kick this back into gear??

Tivo XL4 / are most people all digital?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 01/20/2013 - 12:20
Just interested in hearding from everyone on this. I would LOVE to get the XL4 because of the 4 tuners as well as it being required for the upcoming Tivo Mini which I so desperately want. But unfortunately all of my channels are not offered in digital. There are a handful of decent channels (like Comedy Central, Lifetime (for my wife), HGTV, and others) that are still analog only. To me its not worth paying that much money for the XL4 if I can't record all of the channels.... Anyway, I'm curious to see what percentage of people have channels that aren't offered in digital like me, or am I in the minority. I also am wondering if the Tivo 5 (or whatever it will be called) will continue to require digital only.

<Sigh> Tivo Desktop Plus Transfers Fail

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 01/20/2013 - 12:02
So now that I got the software installed and upgraded to TiVo Desktop Plus I have learned that I cannot actually use the software to transfer recordings to my PC.

I set the PBS series Frontline for automatic transfer and logged in this morning expecting to see my fresh mp4 files transferred and converted. Yeah, no such luck.

So I learned the hard way that calling TiVo Support (Center Partners) is not the way to go because whether or not TiVo failed to train them or CP inadequately conveys training I could not say, but I have learned this is where I need to come to solve my problems with TiVo. Well, at least gripe about them.

So I rebooted the PC and TiVo still got no joy, so I decided to dig a little deeper. I took a tcpdump of the connection to see that Tivo was resetting all the connections immediately after SSL change cipher spec is sent, then RST / FINs. This left me saying WTF so I sent to the logs.

curl: (22) The requested URL returned error: 503 (failed on service availability)
and
HTTP/1.1 401 Authorization Required (TiVo is NTLM)

Then it hits me ... this is a new WINDOWS computer build!!! I launched services.msc and disabled Windoze Firewall and stopped the service. Just then ...

The data started to move!!! Yea!!!

There are two morals to this story:
1) Microsoft still sucks and you should not rely on them for security, even though it worked here.
2) TiVo should stick to Linux code since they apparently cannot do something as simple as adding a Windoze firewall rule to allow their software to function out of the box.

TiVo, I hope your listening here:
Please release TiVo Desktop Plus compiled in .deb and .rpm. You're Linux and should be "Linux Proud!" It is not right to expect users to have to do what I did. I only have this Windoze computer because I don't trust your code on my Mac. I saved the tcpdump if you're interested...

TRAIN AND PAY your support staff!!! They are good people and deserve to be knowledgeable! As a high level support person myself I can promise you this works. If you want the model let me know via PM and I am happy to show you where this is working. Props on keeping them in America, this makes you better than most.

I hope this saves someone an hour of their life.

Multiple TV on one tivo?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 01/20/2013 - 11:38
Premiere XL on Charter Cable. I am feeding my SD tv with the composite (R-W-Y) cable from the tivo A/V output.

If I attach a HD tv using hdmi to the tivo will it feed signals to both TV's?

Thanks, Jon

Missing Channels - Charter

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 01/20/2013 - 11:05
Premier - Charter with Tuning Adapter(TA) and CableCard.

I was receiving all my subscribed channels last week. This week a few HD channels show the screen that it is searching for a signal. On one of the channels I happened to see a weak signal come and go (pixelated for a few seconds then 0 signal, repeat a few times.)

I have used both tuners to test signal under the TA, DVD Diagnostics screen and neither tuner sees a good signal.

The DVR and TA have been power cycled and Charter has sent a reset to the TA. The truck should be here this afternoon.

Is there any chance this is a TiVo issue and not a Charter problem? What issue/how should I check for TiVo issues?

Possible to Transfer Shows from an S3 to a XL4?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 01/20/2013 - 08:29
Against my better judgment, I'm considering upgrading to a XL4. If I bought one, would I be able to transfer my shows on the S3 to the XL4 over my home network? I would do this before selling the S3. And does it require going through the Tivo Desktop software as an intermediary? Thanks.

TivoDesktopPlus won't install

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sun, 01/20/2013 - 01:16
I've had TivoDesktop 2.8.3 for quite a while. (Windows 7) Today I purchased the code for the upgrade to Desktop Plus. However, when I go to help/purchase upgrade/and enter the code, I get the message, "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable." ... "enter a path to a folder containing the installation package TiVoDesktop2.8.3.msi".
I cannot find any file with that name. The installation package for 2.8.3 is TivoDesktop2.8.3.exe - NOT .msi

I have re-downloaded Tivo Desktop and reinstalled to no avail. Now what?

BTW - by default, it's looking for the .msi file in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Temp\ - I hope it doesn't expect anything in a TEMP folder to stay around forever!

Moving Content To TiVo

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 01/19/2013 - 22:49
I'm interested in taking the decrypted DVDs that I have and using TiVo Desktop Plus / pyTivo / kmttg to either serve up to my Premier or to transfer to my Premier. This looks like a much easier model than swapping my TV's input back and forth to my DVD player.

My question is should I transcode the DVD mpegs and, if so, to what?

I know how to consolidate the VOB files. I have VideoReDo and Handbrake.

MRS error: can't watch now

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 01/19/2013 - 22:42
I have a Premiere and an XL4. The XL4 is using MOCA directly and the Premiere has a MOCA adapter on it.

MRS was working great with no problems.

My wireless router died so I got a Netgear WNDR4500 to replace it.

Ever since I got it about 75% of the time when I initiate the MRS from the Premiere it fails with an error of "can't watch now" and then the Premiere locks up completely and will not respond to the remote or app commands. I have to pull the plug and reboot it.

And then MRS will work fine for a while as long as we are watching shows.

It is obviously something with the new router but I cannot find any settings that seem to fix it.

Any ideas?

HD to XL4 + 3 Premieres: MoCA question

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Sat, 01/19/2013 - 21:23
Hi All,

First, TiVo is priority one for my TV. When DirecTV stopped supporting them years ago, I dumped a 12 year relationship with them and switched to Comcast. TiVo is the sine qua non of TV. There is no substitute.

That said, since moving to Comcast on TiVo HD units, I've had a couple pet peeves. Being booted off live TV for two kids' TV shows to record is one, and the ridiculously slow (slower than real time) speed at which things transfer between units and the TiVo Desktop is the other.

With the sale just started, I finally am biting the bullet. Tivo Premieres around the house it is. But that leads me to a question regarding networking.

The XL4 that will be the centerpiece is wired Ethernet. It will be the only 4-tuner unit. The 75 hour, 2 tuner Premiere that will be in the basement is also hard-wire Ethernet. Two upstairs bedrooms will have Premieres do NOT have Ethernet, and no way to get it. I'll have to go the MoCA route to make that work.

So, the question is, do I need to put the two units that are hard-wired to Ethernet on a MoCA adapter as well? I don't see how the data can get off the XL4 and onto the MoCA (coax) network in the first place.

The TiVo site says if it is an XL4, you don't need MoCA, so perhaps it will sense when there's MoCA talk on the coax and just deal with it.... but what about the one in the basement? It is a 2-tuner Premiere, and I'm presuming it will need a MoCA adapter if it wants to reach the XL4 or the bedroom units.

I will also have two WIRED PlayStation3 units (one each at the site of the wired TiVo units, each on the same hub).

So, if I understand correctly, I need 3 MoCA adapters, one each for the non-XL4 units, whereas the XL4 will act as a bridge.

Or, if there is a TiVo God of Serendipity, the fact that I have an XL4 acting as a bridge could mean I don't need ANY MoCA adapters?

Thanks for helping set me straight.
