swapping hard drives

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 06/27/2013 - 07:20
I have two lifetime Series 3 (OLED) TiVos. One is now caught in the dreaded reboot loop. I opened it up and it indeed has a bulging cap. I plan to take care of this with a local shop.

In the meantime, can I possibly take the hard drive out of this rebooting TiVo and put it in the other working Series 3 (OLED)? Then transfer the programs on it to one of my other networked TiVos (2 Premieres and a TiVo HD)? Basically, are programs tied to my account or are the programs tied to the rebooting TiVo's motherboard somehow?

I realize I will also FULLY test this hard drive as well to make sure it is OK and not a failing drive.

Well, Dane proved himself to be a complete idiot! Whether Keith and the crew were right or not, sucker-punching Freddie is not going to make ANY captain want to keep you around.

Felt bad for the Hillstrands on the Time Bandit. Those pots were coming in well stocked, but 95% had to be thrown back - but dayum, 719 at the end made up for it!

...and Elliot, if you want to try to speak to your women, don't P them off in the first place!

Aereo vs TiVo

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 06/27/2013 - 07:03
I am in the Atlanta area and recently got a beta invite for the new Aereo TV service. Have been using it for about 2 weeks now (I think it goes live for everyone on July 1st).

I must say, its actually a rather good service & I have been liking it. It includes cloud DVR service (20 or 60hrs) & while its definitely in its beginning stages & not perfect by any means, I think it has some promise. For now, it works mainly with standard browsers, Roku and Apple devices. I personally used it on a laptop and my wife's iPad and the image quality was pretty good. Of course, I realize this depends on your internet connection. I have a 40Mbs Comcast connection so I am sure this definitely helped. I would like to try it on a Roku at some point and see how easy it is. Its only for local channels (in certain markets), but maybe it will also paved the way for someone else to come up with a true a-la-cart internet TV package of some kind.

Its not a direct threat (yet) to TiVo, but I do like the whole "cloud DVR" concept and would love to see TiVo go in a similar direction. I'm sure its not in the cards at all for their upcoming Series 5 line of DVRs, but maybe down the road they will incorporate something similar (like local programming only). Only time will tell.

All of my wishlists disappeared...

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 06/26/2013 - 20:59
Today, I attempted to edit one of my wishlists on my XL4 and noticed that they were ALL gone. I created a new one from scratch and saved it. I then went back into wishlists and it's gone again. However, when I go into my season passes/to-do list, they are scheduled to record?

Anyone seen this? Is this yet another TiVo bug?

Roku Streaming Stick Remote Updated For Audio Output

Zatz Not Funny! - Wed, 06/26/2013 - 15:07

The clever remote control audio out capabilities introduced with the Roku 3 will be making their way to the Roku Streaming Stick according to today’s FCC filing. Despite new MHL-compatible partners, we can’t imagine Streaming Stick sales have been significant… as it’s often cheaper and always conceptually simpler to bring “Smart TV” capabilities to a HDTV [...]

What's with the crappy remote control

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 06/26/2013 - 13:31
My rant -

Disappointed in TiVO's quality of the remotes, after a few months of use the printing on the buttons is wearing off.

With how long remote controls have been made you think TiVo could spend $0.50 to come up with a remote where the printing on the buttons won't wear off!

NHL Stanley Cup Final – Honda Owner Auto Ratings and Top Watched Moments of Game 6

TiVo Blog - Wed, 06/26/2013 - 12:59
The battle for the Stanley Cup came down to the final moments of game 6. As the crowd in the arena, and the Bruins, assumed the championship series would go to game 7, Chicago was able steal the win in the final minutes of the game with two goals within a 17 second window. With such an exciting outcome, TiVo Research and Analytics could not resist utilizing its second-by-second tune in data to report on the top watched moments of last night’s game. Rhapsody Radio on TiVO

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 06/26/2013 - 12:49
I recently subscribed to Spotify and am under a 30 day trial. Before, we were using the Pandora radio feature on our Premiere and liking it. I thought I would give Spotify a try since its on the Premieres.

From my initial use of Spotify on a PC, it allows you to pick songs from a huge library as well as a Pandora like "radio" feature. I originally thought the Spotify radio feature would also be on the Premiere's Spotify application (a reason I signed up for a trial), but came to learn its not.

I see how there is also Rhapsody on the Premieres. It appears Rhapsody has a 'radio' feature as well for normal PC use. However, has the Rhapsody radio been removed from the TiVo application as well? Would like to know before I possibly sign up for a trial account with Rhapsody too.

ESPN Channels removed: "Not our problem"

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 06/26/2013 - 11:07
For reasons nobody can explain, channels keep getting removed, then added back. Example, Recently ESPN1 and ESPN2 channels were removed. I called Tivo and they tell me (more-or-less), "Not our problem, call your cable company". I call comcast, they check their Comcast DVRs and tell me "Not our problem, our comcast DVRs have the correct lineup, contact Tivo.".... About 3-4 days later, ESPN channels are added back.

This happens a few times a month; various different channels get removed, then get added back. Most of the time the channels that go missing are channels I don't watch, so I don't spend the time\effort to make (futile) phone calls. I watch ESPN, so I wasn't happy that it disappeared from the TiVo's channel lineup (on all 3 Tivos) for a few days.

Anyone have any understanding why Tivo's Channel lineup is removing channels, then adding them back so fequently. And to be clear, there is a TiVo message each time the channels are being removed, and then added back.

So they changed the name from "Design Star" to "HGTV Star" and my season pass didn't pick it up. I just started watching... still seems like it's focused on designers, so why the name change?

Anyone watching?

Nothing to add except Vern Yip is getting old. I guess that means I am too. :o

Do You Need A Smart Lock?

Multiple TVs showing same show from one of 3 sources

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 06/26/2013 - 10:11
I’m looking at the TiVo Premier to replace my Comcast cable TV service. I will be going OTA for network TV and keeping the Comcast internet to use Apple TV for shows I can’t get over the air. What I need to know is how can I get whatever signal my main TV is seeing (Tivo, Apple TV, or DVD player) to show simultaneously on a TV in another room. The TVs are both Samsung HDTVs but not smart TVs. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

HDMI Suddenly Died

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 06/26/2013 - 09:08
Tivo Premier box working for over one year. HDMI suddenly stopped working one evening. Unplugged Tivo and TV then tried multiple cables with two different TVs before switching to component cables which work fine.

I guess I will have to send in for repair. Any idea what Tivo charges for repair and what is turn around time? I would just buy a new box but this one has a firmware hack and a 1.5TB Drive :-D
Thanks

Series 3 Tivo HD Capacitor List

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 06/25/2013 - 19:17
The purpose of this thread is to clarify the ordering information needed to replace the capacitors in a TiVo HD or HD XL.

Step 1: Figure out which model you have. This thread is covering the models TCD652160 and TCD658000. If you have a Series 3 OLED model (TCD 648250 or TCD648250B), then see this post for ordering information: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...93#post9131293

Step 2: Verify that your power supply is made by 3Y Power and has this part number: TiVoPN: SPWR-00011-000 RevB0. The part list in this post is specific to this supply. Pictures of this power supply are in this post: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...62#post9628362

Step 3: Make sure that you can do the work. Capacitors are polarized and must be installed correctly. The trick to soldering is to apply the minimum heat necessary to accomplish the task and enough to get the job done. (In other words try not to burn up your new devices). A video is posted here: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...39#post8758939

Step 4: Determine what you want to order. You can opt to change out the caps as they die, or do them all at once.

Step 5: Order your parts. Here's a list that I used from DigiKey.

Code: QTY PART NUMBER                DESCRIPTION                LOCATION
 1  1189-1197-ND  CAP ALUM 470UF 200V 20% RADIAL    C120
 1  493-1896-ND    CAP ALUM 47UF 50V 20% RADIAL      C220
 1  493-5362-1-ND  CAP ALUM 10UF 25V 20% RADIAL      C227
 1  493-5369-1-ND  CAP ALUM 2.2UF 50V 20% RADIAL    C306
 2  P12354-ND      CAP ALUM 1000UF 10V 20% RADIAL    C403,C503
 1  P12376-ND      CAP ALUM 470UF 16V 20% RADIAL    C702
 5  493-6967-ND    CAP ALUM 2200UF 10V 20% RADIAL    C402,C407,C501,C502,C504
 1  P12366-ND      CAP ALUM 1000UF 16V 20% RADIAL    C701 Grand Total: $12.49 + tax + shipping ~$16 in total.

Note, that there are multiple parts which may suffice as replacements, so my list may differ from others. I looked at other part lists posted on this forum and found issues with the specifications of the chosen parts. We want low ESR parts and high ripple currents. We need the ripple current equal to or higher than the original parts. Secondly, I favored parts that were in stock! Lastly, I didn't worry too much about package size since there is plenty of room.

In case you need to substitute a part, here's the original part list and specifications.

Code: QTY PART NUMBER      DESCRIPTION  Ripple  Imp    LOCATION
 1  CAPXON KF Series  470UF 200V      ?      ?      C120
 1  CAPXON KF Series  47UF 50V      290mA  0.65    C220
 1  CAPXON KF Series  10UF 25V        85mA  2.56    C227
 1  CAPXON KF Series  2.2UF 50V      55mA  2.8    C306
 2  CAPXON KF Series  1000UF 10V    1.43A  .038  C403,C503
 1  CAPXON KF Series  470UF 16V      1.03A  .053  C702
 5  OST RLS Series    2200UF 10V    2.15A  .022  C402,C407,C501,C502,C504
1  OST RLS Series    1000UF 16V    1.82A  .023  C701 Note: I could not find a data sheet for the 200V capacitor, so the ripple current and impedence is unknown.

Tivo 4 tuner and Charter

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 06/25/2013 - 19:06
I want to get a 4 turner and I have a HD now with a cable card and tuning adapter. Tivo said I can't record any Channels that are analog so does that mean any low channels that don't have a matching HD channel with charter won't work? Am I missing something?
