RID verification?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 01/21/2014 - 14:48
Have an opportunity to purchase a New In Box S4040R TIVO (storage locker sale) to replace our dying RCA DRV40 TIVO. We have the new box RID but unfortunately DTV says they cannot verify the unit because it has never been activated and they cannot tell if it was 'leased' box (from them) or a 'owned' box (like from Bestbuy, etc) that just wasn't activated? And that they wouldn't be able to tell until we added it to our account and activated it!? On top of that, if it was a 'leased' unit, we maybe be subject to a 2yr agreement and lease fee!? Sounds like baloney to me. We have been with DTV since '92 and only have had OWNED boxes. Anyone know of a way to verify a never activated receiver RID?

Thank for any help,

Dongle for Tivo Slide Pro??

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 01/21/2014 - 13:13
OK, so in the final stages of setting up a Roamio and 3 Minis...good stuff. I also got 2 Slide Pro remotes, one for the Roamio itself and one for one of the Minis. Tried to setup but no dongle?? Looked in the store online and no dongle to be found. I /had/ setup this Mini with the IR extender so it looks like that will have to go but RF dongle should make that obsolete.

So...question is...where to buy this mystical dongle???

Font sizes in TiVo displays

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 01/21/2014 - 13:05
Is there any way to change the font size in the various TiVo displays? For example, I'm thinking about the "guide" and "info" overlays or in the various menus? I hate to admit it, but even in HD, the menus are getting a bit hard to read.

Help me choose a new old TiVo

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 01/21/2014 - 12:30
The Olympics are coming up, so it's time to think about buying another TiVo.

I'm on Comcast with all-digital cable (Motorola head-end). We have slowish-DSL. I have one TiVoHD. Our TV is SD, so we wouldn't be using the HDUI.

Budget (not counting service) is $150.00.

What I need: basic TiVo functionality. I don't do Netflix or Hulu; I don't have a smartphone; I don't need a multi-room solution. I just want more tuners, and the basic record-watch- delete or archive TiVo stuff. I do archive, especially for the Olympics (using kmttg/VideoReDo TVSuite).

So here's what I'm looking at:
  1. The Premiere ($49.99)
  2. The Premiere 4 ($124.99, or $99 for the refurb)
  3. The Premiere 4 XL refurb ($149.99)
  4. (the wildcard) Humax DRT400 from Weaknees ($149.00)
  5. used TiVoHD off eBay?

Obvious advantages are:
  • For the two-tuner Premiere: it's cheap.
  • For the P4 -- more tuners, and if we retired the HD, we'd only have one monthly service charge instead of 2.
  • For the P4XL -- the same, with more space on the drive.

However, if the performance is flaky and I miss the recordings I want, none of the other specs really matter.

Obvious disadvantages:
  • Any functions that are only available on the HDUI are off-limits
  • Premieres are older technology, thus not as future-proofed as buying a new Roamio
  • Refurbs are refurbed for a reason - do I want to buy someone else's problem?

So: which one do I want? Or should I scrape the couch cushions for the extra $50 and buy a new Romio instead?

Which TiVo is best at doing basic TiVo stuff, and is the least likely to flake out on me?

One Moment??

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 01/21/2014 - 12:02
Hello everybody, I have a Roamio Pro and 4 Mini's all with lifetime. Last night one of the Mini's quit, just got a black screen. I tried re-booting a couple of times and it gets to the "One Moment" blue screen and then just starts flashing black screen to the blue screen every second or so. It's like it's stuck in a loop or something.

Is there anything to try at this point or do I have to go through the hassle of sending it back and switching subscriptions. It's only a couple of months old.

Thanks, Mike in Seattle

Tuning Adapter Losing Authorization/Pairing

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 01/21/2014 - 11:30

My tuning adapter loses its authorization/pairing after being left powered off for long periods of time. I have to call the cable provider to get it re-authorized. Any comments/suggestions?

I have a lifetime premier with a Cisco TA and TimeWarner in New Hampshire. I have only basic cable with NO premium/encrypted channels. This is a "vacation" home with only one over-the-air channel that can be received. The basic cable/channel package is cheap, but only carries about 7 distinct channels (i.e. NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox etc). Because of the limited selection of content, I don't care about recordings AND I often power down the TV/Tivo/TA for week or more at a time, to save electricity.

Often, when I power up the TV/Tivo/TA, everything works, except the Tuning Adapter. (The TimeWarner supplied CABLECARD retains its pairing/authorization) I can look at diagnostics and see that the TA is "not ready." Even if I wait a day or two, still "not ready." Fiddling with, rebooting etc of the TV/Tivo/TA in various combinations has no effect. If I call TimeWarner and have them re-authorize the TA, everything works until I turn off the TA for a week or two.

I don't know if this is usual-and-customary to de-authorize a TA that has not phoned-home in a while? And what purpose would it serve, to de-authorize?

Any insights would be appreciated.

Some "unrelated" facts that may prove useful to readers on other issues:

1) An un-authorized CABLECARD (NOT from TimeWarner/from ebay for a few dollars) will let the subscribed TIVO get channel mapping information and thus accurate guide/channel information.
2) A TV that is directly connected to the basic channel feed will actually tune to a FEW MORE digital channels (like NECN - New England Cable News) than will show up on the TIVO with CABLECARD. Even if both cable and over the air is selected as sources for the TIVO, I can't get it to tune to NECN. If, however, the CABLECARD is removed from the TIVO, then a channel rescan will find NECN and the TIVO can tune it.

I would find the vagaries of Tuning Adapters and CableCards bizzare and fascinating, if not so frustrating for just-watching-TV.

Girls- Season 3 Discussion

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 01/21/2014 - 10:10
The fact that there isn't a thread on this yet probably means that the rest of you are just as embarrassed as I am to like this show.

I'm really enjoying this season. I hate the girls so much and yet I really want to be their friend.

I was SHOCKED at the Gaby Hoffman bottomless scene. I'm not sure I've ever quite seen that on TV before.

God I hate Marnie. It's really a shame we won't be seeing Charlie this season. I liked him so much more than her.

Anyone know how can I donate hard drives pulled from Tivos?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 01/21/2014 - 09:26
I used to work on series 2 Tivos...... doing general repairs, upgrades, etc

I built up a supply of the PATA/IDE drives. I have about 25 of these, i think. Most of them are 40 or 80 gig.

It would be nice to sell these but i am not sure how much anyone would actually pay for these.

Also, I hate to throw these in the garbage if there might be someone who could use these things.

Is there any way to donate these to some sort of charity? I live in Dallas.

Black Sails - new show on Starz

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 01/21/2014 - 09:20
I was snooping around on demand and saw this new show coming to Starz called Black Sails. I don't think the show has aired yet, but you can get the first episode off on demand.

I watched the show and it was pretty good. It is about pirates and it is not cheesy like the Johnny Depp movies. The captain of the ship doesn't wear an eye patch or have a peg leg. He actually seems to be well educated. There is some politics on the ship and talk of finances and such. They also went to land. Some town that seems to basically be run by pirates. There are characters there that will obviously be in the show in the future I'd guess.

I really enjoyed it and look forward to more.

Liked the Mother scenes on their own, but they were very out of place with the rest of the episode. It almost felt like watching two different shows.

I'm curious what is going to happen between Lily and Marshall. I was very impressed with Alyson Hannigan's acting ability during the argument. She really looked upset.

The Barney stuff was interesting, sweet, ludicrous, and completely out of character at different times. I do like that they finally answered the question of what he does for a living and how it tied into his back story.

DIY 4TB Premiere

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 01/20/2014 - 23:06
Well after a lot of trial and error, I finally managed to come up with a way to expand a premiere drive up to 4TB. This was the result.

I was able to keep all my recorded shows. It took me about 2 days to accomplish this. I will do my best to outline the procedure as soon as I get it written up. It is not for the faint of heart and does require some technical know how. While doing this procedure, I moved the OS to approximately the center of the 4TB drive and 4k aligned the image. It probably was not necessary but I figured if I am maxing out my premiere I want to try to reduce seek times as much as possible. It also requires you to coalesce some partitions and have an extra 2TB drive. Once I feel the write up has the detail needed, I will post it here.

Netflix on Tivo... anyone like it?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 01/20/2014 - 23:05
Frustrating. Every time my wife and I go to look for a movie to watch on Netflix via Roamio. It seems like a terrible user interface. Am I missing something, or is this the general consensus?

And the addition of profiles... actually terrible! It was better off when it just went to the main profile and had no other option. I could set it for Kids and they were fine. My wife and I could have our profile online and that was that. Now anyone can pick any profile on Tivo, and have access to any movies they want. Was anyone thinking when they added profile support? Why the heck isn't NetFlix providing PIN access to each profile and Tivo supporting it in the app?

Am I missing something or is it just this bad?

XL4/Premier4 more sluggish than 2-tuner Premiers?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 01/20/2014 - 22:43
Are the 4-tuner Premiers (XL4, Premier4) more sluggish with regard to the User Interface (menu navigation, option selection, etc.) than the 2-tuner Premiers?

Currently I have 3 2-tuner Premiers in service, month-to-month, MSD, etc.

I found Open Box at a local Best Buy both a XL4 and a Premier4. I went ahead and grabbed them as the pricing was really good.

My plan was to retire the 3 2-tuner Premiers, and place into service both the 4-tuner Premiers, plus a Tivo Mini.

However, I'm now concerned that the 4-tuner Premiers will be disappointingly sluggish in the UI. My 3 2-tuner Premiers are sometimes a bit laggy and sluggish (using the HD menus) but overall I've been satisfied.

I don't want to fully commit to the 4-tuner Premiers only to find out they are more laggy/sluggish than what I've accepted with the 2-tuner units.

Thanks for any observations/advice.

How can I get saved programs off of my TiVo Series 2 and onto my computer?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 01/20/2014 - 22:28
We are switching TV service from our local cable company to either Dish or UVerse. I currently own a TiVo Series 2 DVR with lifetime membership that we bought many many years ago. I have a few programs recorded of my son on TV that I REALLY need to keep! With Dish or UVerse I'm told I am getting their own DVRs for my TVs. Can I still plug in my TiVo whenever I want to watch these shows about my son? Is there a way to get these shows transferred to my computer, and how?? I only have 2 days to do this as they will be coming to install the new service then!! Please can someone help me figure out how to either keep using my TiVo when I want, or get the saved programs onto my computer?! Thank you!! (P.S. I am not very tech savvy, so please explain simply) :-)

Problems Streaming AWAY from home

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 01/20/2014 - 21:30
I've been using TiVo Stream for about 3 months. Works great streaming to my iPad WITHIN my home and also works great downloading recorded shows for airplane travel.

Streaming away from my home network is a whole different story. I've yet to have a great experience with it. Most of the time the picture just freezes and / or won't play at all.

Anybody else having any particular good or bad experienced steaming away from your home network?

It's also incredibly disappointing that I'm not able to stream to a PC or MAC using a Web Browser.

I welcome any thoughts and/or suggestions. Thanks in advance.

This is one day early, but wanted to give a heads up on something in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly:

"Set the DVR to run long. You don't want to miss the show's last 30 seconds."

This will be the final episode until April.
