Copying shows from HD to Roamio

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 02/06/2014 - 21:53
I have a TiVo HD with a considerable number of shows that I won't be able to watch prior to the arrival of my new Roamio. I only have one cable card. Is it possible to transfer shows between them if one box does not have a cable card? Will the TiVo HD still communicate/transfer even if it's one of the cable card setup screen because it doesnt have a card?

HDVR2 with upgraded Power Supply

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 02/06/2014 - 20:23
HDVR2 in good working order
The Power Supply has just been refurbished with New Capacitors and the Main Receiver board also has the modification for the 'Searching for Tuner 2' issue addressed with addition of capacitor.

It does need software upgrade - only reason it is not done is it will not connect over my VOIP telephone - needs regular land line.
Works fine with currently installed 6.2a, but needs the 6.4 software upgrade for the local channels.

Currently listed on EBay.

Asking $45 plus shipping

Note that a refurbished Power Supply alone is ~ $70 plus shipping!

Tonight Show With Jay Leno

It looks like tonight's (2/6/2014) Tonight Show with Jay Leno will be his finale show. There will not even be a show for 2/7.

I guess we will not know who will take his place until the Olympics is over.

Live TV streaming to PC ?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 02/06/2014 - 17:54
Hi. I just purchased Tivo Desktop Plus without reading all the details, but it does not seem to offer Live TV on my computer. In other words, how can I use my computer like a virtual Tivo Mini and watch live TV while at my desktop?

Where is this "live TV" box/area on a Mini?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 02/06/2014 - 16:58
I recently got a Mini and its connected to a 4-tuner Premiere for its host. So far, I am liking it a lot. One thing I am trying to figure out though.

On my Premiere, I could see the current live channel in the upper right corner when I was in the TiVO menu. With this Mini, there is no live channel showing up in the upper right area. I never had to mess with this setting on my Premiere & it was just there so just assumed it was a default option, but maybe not for the mini.

If possible, what setting do I need to access & change and how? Or can this not be done with the Mini?

HDVR2 on SWiM?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 02/06/2014 - 16:25
I have a SWiM system for my Genie and HD HR20 receivers:
I have an old HDVR2 - can this be connected to the SWiM?
If so, what do I need to do?
Right now if I just connect the co-ax cables it won't get through the satellite set-up, whether I do single cable input or dual.
I'm only looking to test its functionality, not to retain as part of my current set-up.
Appreciate any guidance.

Old PBS show: "Animals and Such"

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 02/06/2014 - 14:43
Does anyone besides me remember this? It would've been from the 1970's or early 80's. It was educational programming, and short -- maybe only 15 minutes an episode? Despite the title, I remember it as being about microbes -- particularly the one episode I remember best, about the Volvox. The narrator had a very distinctive voice, with a kind of southern accent.

I'd like to see it again, but I haven't been able to find anything about it on the Internet. Anybody?

Kind of dumb questions

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 02/06/2014 - 13:06
I have two unrelated questions.

First, I have read the user guide, and searched the forums but haven't seen an answer to this. Where do I find "recording history"? On the Roamio, the history menu item shows what I deleted or didn't record, but not what won't record in the future. I read the guide, and it said it's in the to-do list, but I didn't see it there. At first I thought that maybe it was because with a new box, and 6 tuners nothing wouldn't record in the future, so I deleted a few shows from the to-do list from a moved over SP. Still no indication I'd cancelled the recordings. Am I missing something?

Second question - we are using a wired connection that has worked fine (lots of trouble with wireless when we first got it). Last night we were seeing the dreaded C133 again. We also had some intermittent issues with other computers, so we rebooted the modem. That seemed to fix everything else, but not the tivo. I rebooted, which, when we had wireless, fixed it, but not this time. I tried to make a connection to the service, it failed with a network issue. However, when I tested the network from the diagnostics screen, it worked. I gave up and went to bed, and it's fine this morning. Any thoughts on what caused this? My husband thinks maybe the DNS servers at our ISP went down, and it just took time to clear the cache from bad addresses.

Thanks as always!

You know, I was fine with this episode, up until the magic hyperbaric chamber was able to save Skye by not only reducing her temperature to 44 degrees (which would kill her) but increasing the pressure so fast it would rupture her eardrums.

Forgetting the fact that hyperbaric chambers have nothing to do with temperature, are the writers so lazy as to think that a nerd centered audience like us wouldn't catch that?

All they had to do was say "Look! It looks like some sort of stasis pod that the black guy was in! Lets put skye in there!" Lazy writing.

Can you use a non-TiVo branded USB wireless adapter?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 02/06/2014 - 11:04
I just sold one of my Premiere boxes on eBay yesterday, and the buyer wants to know if they can use a non-TiVo branded USB wireless adapter with it. All of my TiVos are hardwired, so I have no experience in this area. Thanks!

CableCard Woes (Comcast & Premiere XL 4 / Elite) Tuner

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 02/06/2014 - 10:46
So Saturday, day before the Super Bowl, all my channels go blank - zero signal on ANY channel on my TiVo Premier XL4 (Elite). I figure it's just temporary, maybe a temporary Comcast / XFinity problem, and sleep on it. Next day, still no channels.

Call Comcast, they go through the pairing process with me, have me reboot. No signal on any channel.

Call TiVo, they connect me to Comcast and go through pairing process again, same deal, no channels.

Comcast Tech comes out to house, makes sure there's good signal coming in. Yes, strong signal. I have not lost Internet or Phone (both from Comcast) this whole time.

He swaps out the CableCard, does the pairing process again, still dead.

Do the pairing dance with Comcast & TiVo several more times. Always comes back with ZERO signal strength on ANY channel.

TiVo recommends I try at least 3 or 4 more cable cards. Sigh. Go down to a local Comcast, get the only card they have, bring it home, SAME THING. Called Comcast/TiVo they both blame each other.

Supervising Technician from Comcast comes to house the next day. Before he does, however, he brings a TV that accepts CableCards so we can rule out whether it is to blame, as TiVo says. Sure enough, the TV WORKS FINE with the cable card after pairing. It's NOT the CableCard(s). Re-checks my signal strength - all looks great.

Next thing we try is pulling the CableCard OUT of the TiVo and doing a Channel Search, which *should* find 550+ channels. It finds only 5 channels. Run the same process on my Samsung TV, and it finds 552. Same thing on the TV he brings (with no CableCard) and it also finds 552. Comcast says it's likely a Tuner problem with the TiVo.

Call TiVo and they say put a signal booster on the line. LOL. There's PLENTY of signal, and TiVo is seeing ZERO of it.

TiVo says my options are to do an exchange for $149, which I assume means I lose all my saved programs. They also mentioned Weaknees as a repair shop.

My question to you all is: have you seen anything like this? From what I've said here, does it sound like the TiVo's tuner has gone bad? Any other possibilities? Or easy things to try that I may not have thought of yet?

I appreciate any and all advice / suggestions.

TWC & Weather Channel on Tivo Units

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 02/06/2014 - 10:06
Recently noticed that I wasn't receiving the weather channel on either of my Tivo Unit (Premier & Elite ). The screen would simply go black the display a channel not authorized error message . My non Tivo Cable DVR receives it without incident.

My carrier is Time Warner Hudson Valley NY, the tech came to the house today and in the end TWC position is that this is a Tivo Issue which can be solved by a clear and reset.

Obviously I am in no rush to erase all my recordings in order to receive Weather Channel. Has anyone else experienced this issue and had a resolution short of erasing everything ?.. Thanks

TV Goes Black for 3 Seconds

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 02/06/2014 - 09:52
My downstairs TV will go black for 3 seconds – then come back on – when various light switches (both upstairs and downstairs) are thrown.

[FYI, the box is a 2 year old TiVo Premiere. The Time Warner coax cable from outside goes into the TiVo box; the TiVo and TV are connected by an HDMI cable. A Switched Digital Video Adapter from TWC is attached to the TiVo via a USB cable.]

Here are the steps I've taken to address the problem:

I unplugged the TV and TiVo plugs that were in the entertainment center’s built-in outlet … and plugged them into an outlet in a wall near the kitchen. Flipped the light switches and the TV went black as before.

It was time to bring in a professional. Scott the electrician was called into service. With the TV and TiVo plugs removed from the entertainment center’s built-in outlet, Scott inserted a voltage meter into said outlet, and turned the light switches on and off. There was no decrease in the voltage.

He then uttered those famous words that you don’t want to hear from your electrician or surgeon: “Hmm, I’ve never seen anything like this before!”

So here’s the next experiment we conducted:

We unscrewed the coax cable from the back of the TiVo box and screwed it into the back of the TV. We removed the HDMI cable connecting the TiVo Box to the TV. The TV was plugged into the entertainment center’s built-in outlet. The TiVo box was unplugged from the outlet.

Using the TV’s dedicated remote (not the TiVo remote), I turned it on, changed the “Input” setting to “TV”, and was able to view Time Warner Cable programming.

The light switch was turned on/off and the TV did NOT go black as it had before!

This prompted Scott to say: “Hmm, I’ve never seen anything like this before!”

He concluded that the problem was “electronic … not electric.” He theorized that the throwing of the light switches was causing some sort of radio wave interference that the TiVo box was receiving and transmitting to the TV. Other than that, he was stumped.

I have an identical TV/TiVo setup upstairs. That TiVo box is fairly new; it was purchased within the last 4 months.

I brought the upstairs TiVo downstairs and hooked it up to the TV. Same problem: the TV went black for 3 seconds after throwing a light switch.

I just got off the phone with TiVo support. They were stumped; they insisted that there's something wrong with the wiring in my house. I had told them about the electrician's voltage test ... I had told them about the "Coax cable directly into the TV with TiVo unplugged" test ... no matter. They insisted that there was something wrong with the wiring in my house.

Any assistance would be most appreciated. Thank you.

P.S. While the electrician was here, he had me unplug my router and DSL modem. The TV continued to go black when light switches were thrown.

Arg! VHD Restore Problems

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 02/06/2014 - 09:22
For the life of me, I can't seem to get this recovered to the physical disk. DVRBars bombs and I don't really see another way to restore a VHD to physical disk. I've tried acronis, clonezilla, and VBoxManage. Are there any other methods off accomplishing this task or should I just do the cake thing and pay the $40 and forget about it?

questions about a stream with a 4-tuner Premiere

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 02/06/2014 - 07:55
I have a 4-tuner Premiere (w/ Comcast). Everything works good. Was looking at possibly getting a Stream in order to do out-of-home streaming of live channels (to portable devices...iPad and iTouch).

Can this be done with a 4-tuner Premiere? Or is it really only for the Roamios?

Also, if it can be done, will the Stream just use one of the 4 tuners on my Premiere without disturbing the current viewer in any way? Or does it work some other way?

Current state of padding

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 02/06/2014 - 07:51
It seems there are a number of threads about padding shows, with posts of various ages. It looks like some problems that were fixed in one Tivo iteration were "unfixed" subsequently.

So, as the software functions right now, if I pad a bunch of shows by 1 minute, what should I expect to happen?

question about a Squaretrade warranty on a lifetimed Mini

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Thu, 02/06/2014 - 07:46
I recently got a tivo mini with the advisory panel discount. Lifetimed it too. I also then decided to get a squaretrade warranty for it.

I am usually am not a fan of these extended warranties, but wanted to try squatters so this seemed like an ideal scenario to try it. With a discount code, 3yrs was about $10.

My question is this; how does a squaretrade warranty work with the lifetime if I need to make a claim, but then they simply decide they can't fix it and/or will just buy me a new one/money back?

I am hoping similar to what tivo told me for a Geeksquad warranty I have on a lifetime premiere I bought from Best Buy. Tivo said I would just have to show that Best Buy replaced it somehow (if couldn't fix) and they would transfer lifetime to the new unit.

Would this most likely be the same situation with a squaretrade related claim?
