Rachael vs. Guy Celebrity Cook-Off *Season thread with spoilers*

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 01/07/2014 - 10:41
I've watched past seasons...but it seems like past contestants had more experience...?? Most of this year's celebrities seem clueless. Not knowing how to cut a cabbage? Or chop veggies the same size? There were other things...but I was not impressed. Maybe I just don't remember clearly, and there were some duds in those seasons, too?

And I'm only 30m in.

Meh.

Kevo Gateway Takes Smartlock Control On The Road

Zatz Not Funny! - Tue, 01/07/2014 - 10:30

Even though I’ve yet to wrap up my Kevo Smartlock review, Kwikset has gone ahead and revealed phase two of their Unikey-powered connected home strategy. There’s a variety of ways to slice and dice these smart components, and Kevo only ships with Bluetooth capabilities – unlike some of their competitors, who integrate WiFi. To extend [...]

Intelligence on CBS - Anyone interested?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 01/07/2014 - 10:23
The show, based on the previews, is the type of show I generally like, but my fear is that, much like Persons of Interest, it will just wind up being another CBS procedural with some sort of twist. I'll give it a shot because of Josh Holloway and hope for the best.

Tablo OTA DVR Now Available For Pre-Order

Zatz Not Funny! - Tue, 01/07/2014 - 09:06

The cord cutting options are heating up, with Tablo poised to ship in February. I spent some quality time at the Digital Experience with CEO Grant Hall going over their offering… that consists of both two- and four-tuner configurations to pull in luscious broadcast video via antenna, without going through a cable company. Like Simple TV, the [...]

The Definitive Fan Replacement Review - Tivo Series3

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 01/07/2014 - 02:58
I have read some squabbling on other threads about what is the best fan to replace a worn out Cofan that came in the Tivo Series3.

So I bought three fans from NewEgg and made a video of my testing to end the debates. I decided to go with a fan which was very quiet (important to me) and actually put out a bit more air than the original Cofan ... it also happened to be the cheapest.

The video of my test is on YouTube. To view it, go to YouTube and search for "rws70 tivo".

I tested: (all from NewEgg.com)
EVERCOOL FAN-EC7025M12CA 70mm Item #: N82E16835119040
APEVIA CF7025S 70mm Item #: N82E16835228027
GELID Solutions Slient 7 FN-SX07-22 70mm Item #: N82E16835426040

The APEVIA CF7025S was the clear winner and only costs $5.

If you really want some extra air flow and don't mind a little background whirring sound during standby then the Evercool (out of stock today) might be for you.

I often read in my living room when the TV is off and the Tivo is on Standby, and I like it quiet. I am very happy with the Apevia and you can see and hear for yourself in the video of my tests on YouTube, so you don't have to take my word on it.

The video is my first, the editing isn't so great but it should help in the decision making and installation for all my fellow Tivo Series 3 diehards and do it yourselfers!

Cheers

Unwanted Upscaling of Hulu?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 01/06/2014 - 21:48
I was checking out the old British "UFO" series on Hulu and was noticing really bad pulldown, and I checked my receiver to see that I was getting 1080i from my TiVo, which was odd since I have it set to output everything native, and Hulu is usually 720p. I checked my settings to make sure they hadn't been changed (they hadn't), then went back to Hulu and found it was now 720p, with pulldown no longer noticeable. Later I went back to Hulu again and found I was getting 1080i. Exit Hulu, go back into Hulu: 720p. This is a little annoying, and I'm not sure how long it's been going on. Anyone else noticed?

P.S. Haven't noticed many TiVo issues in quite some time, and lately it's something every day.....

Sharing a Tivo Service Number- Bad Idea?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 01/06/2014 - 21:03
I have a TCD652160 with lifetime service that died on me following a power surge*. I don't have the time to troubleshoot/repair, so I am considering selling it. Is there any way that a 3rd party can confirm the unit has lifetime if it won't power on? If I share my TiVo serial number (TSN) does that expose me to risk?

Thanks in advance,

SAFW

*It doesn't make it to the initial starting up screen, so it is probably not the hard drive, but rather something on the motherboard that died (exploding capacitors come to mind).

Is there ANY advantage of MoCA over Ethernet?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 01/06/2014 - 20:00
I currently have several Premieres and Series 3 TiVo set up in my home. ALL of them are networked with each other via ethernet cabling, routers and switches. It all works great.

I am looking to possibly get the Roamio Plus and see that it has built-in MoCA. Right now it would use Ethernet like all the rest, but is there really ANY good reason to use MoCA over Ethernet? Or is the MoCA option really for those that can't or don't want to mess with trying to run Cat5 cabling in an older home where it would be next to impossible in some situations? Or maybe in an older condo that is not network ready either.

Just wondering.

Can a TiVo Premiere work with an S-card?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 01/06/2014 - 19:35
I have Series 3 (OLED) with 2 S-cable cards in it. I have a (refurb) 2-tuner Premiere on the way that will be replacing this Series 3. I went to my local Comcast office to get an M-card, but they don't have them right now and said to check back later.

Until I can get a hold of and obtain an M-card (either locally or over the phone with Comcast & mailed to me), can I just use one of my current S-cards in the 2-tuner Premiere? If possible, I also realize it would only have one tuner for now, but this future Premiere is not a main TiVo that willl be heavily used so I am not in a huge rush to get the M-card & can temporarily live with it being a one tuner DVR if needed (and if possible).

Basically just wondering about the functionality of an S-card in a 2-tuner Premiere.

Vizio Doubles Down On The 5.1 Soundbar

Zatz Not Funny! - Mon, 01/06/2014 - 19:04

Those following closely know the original Vizio 5.1 “soundbar” was one of the best tech purchases I made in 2013. Unlike traditional soundbars, in addition to being paired to a subwoofer, the Vizio also includes a pair of rear channel speakers (that connect to the subwoofer, which communicates wireless to the soundbar) to provide a [...]

TiVo no longer keeps old unit active for 30 days when you transfer service?

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Mon, 01/06/2014 - 18:17
I have gone from Series 2 to Series 3 to Series 4 and in the past TiVo always gave me a grace period of 30 days so that I could copy my shows and season passes.

I assumed the same would occur here so I ordered a new Roamio and transferred service to it but it immediately killed the service on the other box so I couldn't transfer shows or season passes. When I asked customer service anymore they said that since I "transferred" service I lost that option? I was told the 30 days wasn't an option anymore so I have basically lost the option to copy my season pass and the shows. I thought I could manually copy season passes by powering up the TiVo and just doing it by hand but now I can't even view the season passes unless it is activated.

Is this how it has always been or something new? The chat agent told me I would have to activate it and be charged to get it turned on long enough to see it which strikes me as very customer unfriendly...

Intel Paints Sci-Fi Picture of the Future

Call me a Sci-Fi nut, but I’m a sucker for stories about human/brain interfaces, virtual reality, and the coming Singularity. And Intel’s press conference hit every one of those trigger points at CES this afternoon. Senior VP Mooly Eden described blended devices where brain and machine are physically linked together and said he believes it’s [...]

If I get a new motorola Mcard for him with COX does it have to be a certain version? are their any issues?

TiVo HD with suspected power supply issues

I have a TiVo HD with Lifetime with suspected power supply issues. It looks like you've got to have 15 posts to post to the Seller forum. Is it legitimate to post it here if I don't have 15? I've read this forum for years and always found my questions already answered so haven't had to post...

Thanks,
Kirk
