Replacing Premiere XL4 Hard Drive with smaller drive

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 11/20/2013 - 14:36
I have a Premiere XL4 with a 2TB hard drive and I just purchased a Roamio Plus and a separate 3TB hard drive. My plan is to replace the hard drive in the Roamio with the 3TB and throw the 1TB drive that came with the Roamio in the Premiere. I will then take the 2TB drive that came in the Premiere and put it in my computer.

Is there a way to clone the OS portion of the 2TB drive to the 1TB? I am not concerned about keeping recordings but I don't know if I can shrink an image from the 2TB to the 1TB and have it work in the Premiere. I have found a lot of info on installing a larger drive in a Premiere but not much on putting in a smaller one.

Has anyone done this or know how to do it?

Roamio and Mini update today (11/20/2013)

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 11/20/2013 - 14:15
We will be releasing an update later today for TiVo Roamio and TiVo Mini.

Here is a list of some of the changes:
- fixed an issue where the video would occasionally freeze and the box would become unresponsive
- fixed an issue where the box wouldn't display anything after Standby
- fixed an issue related to fast-forward/rewind/recording not working on some channels
- fixed an issue where YouTube could freeze when using a keyboard remote

The update should probably be available sometime after 2pm PT.

Evansville TWC/Insight Tivo cablecard setup

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 11/20/2013 - 13:45
I've been going around in circles with TWC on various services. I'm in an old Insight location so a lot of the services they offer online and on the phone end up not being available come install time.
I'm at the point where I've picked up a Tivo Roamio and a cablecard from TWC. I went to install that and TWC/Insight number wouldn't setup because I didn't have a "Tuning Adapter". Went back to the local office (3rd trip) and they had no idea what a Tuning adapter was and couldn't find anyone "in the back" that did know. Got another number to call and they took cablecard setup info without asking about an adapter but premium channels don't work. A problem the tivo docs say is because a tuning adapter is required. TWC rep set an appointment for a tech to troubleshoot but I have little confidence at this point.
Anyone have any advise or knowledge on Insight/Evansville and Tivo/Cablecard setup?
I've threatened to drop TWC a few times but the hassle of going to Wowway and the unknowns on their quality are preventing it but I'm about at that point.

Quote: There are a handful of unimpeachable Thanksgiving institutions. Multi-thousand calorie meals? Of course. Football games featuring the Lions and Cowboys? Naturally. Parades? You bet. Watching hypnotically wonderful marathons of*Mystery Science Theater 3000? Unfortunately, not since 1997. Of course, that all changes this Thanksgiving. EW is pleased to announce that*MST3K*creator Joel Hodgson is hopping on board the Satellite of Love once again to program the return of Turkey Day. Shout! Factory, who have been doing a stellar job putting out*MST3K*on DVD, is helping to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary with a Turkey Day Marathon, curated and hosted by Hodgson.

Beginning at Noon Eastern on Thanksgiving Day, fans will be able to*log on to MST3KTurkeyDay.com*for six glorious, classic, Sampo-filled episodes of*Mystery Science Theater 3000.But which classic turkeys will get basted by Joel, Mike, Crow, and Tom Servo on Thanksgiving Day? That’s up to the fans.Hodgson is going to be*taking fan suggestions via his Twitter, so hit him up to sound off on whether*Manos: The Hands of Fate*is more harrowing than*Jungle Goddess, or cast your vote on whichever*Gamera*movie you think is the most Thanksgiving-centric. It’s up to you, so give him a shout!

The first Turkey Day was all the way back in 1991, when the Comedy Channel was making its transition into Comedy Central. The network suggested the idea of the marathon, and Hodgson and his team happily obliged with*a ton of classic sketches. What Hodgson didn’t realize was that this tradition would continue for years—even long after*MST3K*left the airwaves. “When I started doing*Cinematic Titanic*six years ago and we started doing live shows, that’s when I really met these people who love*Mystery Science Theater,” Hodgson told EW.*”I’d hear all these stories about Turkey Day. People would say, ‘Yeah, we still watch*Mystery Science Theater*on Thanksgiving. It’s a tradition, like the Lions playing.’ I was kind of amazed that it was in people’s lives like that.”

Hodgson will be programming, hosting, and testing your*MST3K*knowledge during the Turkey Day bonanza, and he has enjoyed diving back into the series’ 198 episodes. “It’s really been interesting, and I really loved getting to go back and look at these shows, especially the Mike/Kevin/Bill episodes, which I’m not as familiar with,” Hodgson said. “They’ve been extra funny because I don’t know any of the jokes. That’s been a really cool thing.” He does, however, bemoan the lack of Thanksgiving-centric monster movies available for riffing purposes. “A giant turkey would really fit in the lexicon of things like Gamera. You have Gyaos and Godzilla, Rodan, and Turkathon. Actual turkeys are horrifying. Their temperament is terrible, and they’re just tall enough to go for your crotch. And they seem to have a genetic predisposition to go for your crotch. They’re also really stupid, right? They’re famous for being stupid and delicious. That’s exactly what you want.”

So*send your Turkey Day suggestions and favorite*MST3K-related Thanksgiving memories to Hodgson, get your bird in the oven early and then*log on to the websitestarting at Noon Eastern/9 AM Pacific for the epic return of Turkey Day. THR22-100 Stops Recording to Download from Sat

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 11/20/2013 - 11:07
Been back with DirecTV about two months now and using THR22-100 (tried their Genie and could not deal with their interface). The THR22 works as expected and happy except for 1 thing:

It goes into "Downloading from Satellite" display with progress bar and % at random times, often when I want to watch TV (otherwise, the only way I know it did this process is that I find both tuners are on the same channel). Caption says to use TiVo button to go to TiVo Central. And that's about all you can do until it finishes the download.

Also, the Program Guide is often screwy after the download completes - sometimes for hours, sometimes for a few minutes.

The worst part: It will STOP A CURRENT RECORDING to perform this download. A few weeks ago, all the previously scheduled evening's recordings failed because (per the Recording History) "program no longer in Guide" since the database was (I am guessing) being rebuilt.

Is this normal for a THR22-100? If so, then guess I just have to live with it. If not, is there a way to fix? Have not called DirecTV as will likely take a major effort to find someone there that even knows what a THR22 is, much less anyone with repair or behavior quirks understanding.

Noob question? (Standby/Power Off)

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 11/20/2013 - 10:51
Hi,

Just getting going with everything. I overcame my V70 errors last night (just had to wait them out and connect the Romaio to the TiVo service and reboot the Minis) and got everything to work in and out of home.

I do still have one, really dumb question:

Is there a way/do I have to turn the Mini's (or even the Roamio) off? I woke up this morning and the white LED was still on on both my Minis. There's a standby option but it's buried deep in a menu which suggests to me that it's not often used.

I searched on this and these forums (and others) seem to suggest that it's fine to leave them on, but does the LED staying on mean the unit is constantly active? Does this even matter?

I'm sorry if this is dumb!

Little Couple - Big Updates - Nov 17 2013

This aired on Tuesday, Nov, 17 2013:

Little Couple, Big Updates.

TLC is so frustrating because they have this "special" show title so no ones DVR across the country recorded it.

Furthermore, since it's not considered the actual series, it is not sold on Amazon, iTunes, etc. Very frustrating.

Would anyone be able to summarize what happened on the updates? Very bummed to not be able to see this.

Thanks!

Stream Downloads to iPhone but Program is Cut Short

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 11/20/2013 - 10:22
I have had a TiVo Premiere for about 2 years and recently purchased the Stream. It now seems to be working fine, but I noticed that some (not all) of the programs I downloaded were cut short. For example, what was recorded as a 1 hour show on my Premere is downloaded as a 37 or 41 minute show on my iPhone. I first noticed this when I went to play one of my downloaded shows and it was cut off towards the end of the show . . . right when things were getting good :( It was super frustrating! And some other programs were downloaded in their entirety. Any idea what is causing this?

Can't get a cablecard from TWC

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 11/20/2013 - 09:36
Hey guys, I can't seem to get a cablecard from TWC. I went to the local office and they told me that they had them at the warehouse and could only send out a technician to install it. I then called TWC and asked them to send me one on 11/7. The lady said no problem and it would be out in 2-3 business days. I called on 11/14 as I still hadn't received one. That person told me it should be there on 11/18. Still no card. I called today, 11/20 and the guy told me that cablecard mail delivery to my area is not available. I live in the Richmond KY area. What do I need to do here? Thanks.

Naked Vegas (2013 season thread)

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Wed, 11/20/2013 - 08:26
A show about a professional body painting business in Las Vegas. I've been doing this off and on (as an amateur) for the last dozen years, so I was highly interested but also being a slacker Tivo user I only got around to watching the first episode last night.

I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't exactly what I wanted. Way way way too much talking and fast cuts, not enough actual painting and explaining what materials are being used and techniques employed. Typical reality show, I guess, only with lots more painted flesh. The zombie wedding party was fun. The painted nighties are something I've done myself several times and it was great to see the technique they used with the lace and stocking stencils are exactly what I'd developed for my own use years ago.

So, anyone else watching? It looks like a show that will be reduced from 1 hour to about 15 minutes after FF'ing past all the yakking. Still, fun and interesting and loads of eye candy.

Supernatural - "Bad Boys" - 11/19/13

Wow. That episode delivered. It was pretty much everything I didn't realize I had been missing in this show. It felt like authentic SPN.... season 1/2. It was dark and scary and gory.

I love the salt and burn grave scene.
Spoiler: Those have been fewer lately with the lack of ghost episodes. And even though this episode did nothing for the overall season arc and I could care less. We can have every episode like this and I'd be just fine with that.

The flashbacks to their childhood is something I've missed. That kid really didn't look like Dean but man oh man did he nail every nuance of Dean. The brother feelings were amazing and I was left crying at the end because Dean will always choose Sammy over anything and anyone. I love that the show proves this over and over. All it took was one look out that window at his brother and his entire demeanor changed.
Spoiler:
Dean had wanted a normal life. Just like Sam. I just loved LOVED how in this episode Sam got none of the insight we got and yet still realized at the end just what had went down there, just what Dean had and gave up. And the reason for it.
Spoiler: I'm telling you these brothers are going to be the death of me.

Next Gen: Xbox One vs PS4

Zatz Not Funny! - Wed, 11/20/2013 - 07:02

The next generation gaming consoles have arrived. And, while the enclosures are more subtle this time around, it certainly appears that Sony engineers have schooled Microsoft on hardware design with the PS4 featuring a substantially more compact and elegant form… that doesn’t, yet again, require a massive power brick as the Xbox One does. However, [...]

Bad PSU capacitors? Pics

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 11/19/2013 - 23:08
Good evening, all.

Came home tonight to my original Series3 with a frozen on-screen image. Rebooted and it stuck at "Welcome, Powering up." Multiple manual restarts (unplugs) and continued to stick at the 'welcome, powering up' screen. Read the troubleshooting guide and got a very unexpected (but very welcome!) reply from Weaknees on the issue with the link to the pics of bad capacitors. Pulled off the cover and saw what (I think) look like two slightly domed capacitors. I have attached two small pics of the potentially affect caps and wanted to get an opinion if you thought these caps were bad before buying a new PSU for the TiVO.

Thanks in advance for your help. Helped me fix my two older TiVOs in the past and I really appreciate it.

Cox cable phone on screen display

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 11/19/2013 - 22:30
We just left AT&T for Cox Cable Telephone.

If we had a Cox set-top box, incoming phone calls display on the TV.

Cox tech support tells me that's not possible with TiVo/cable cards, and essentially said it was a TiVo problem.

Anyone want to chime in on the truthiness of that statement....not that I would doubt the Cox sales/tech staff.

thanks

Former TiVo user w/questions thinking of coming back

TiVoCommunity Forum Recent Threads - Tue, 11/19/2013 - 22:30
Hello all, I'm a former TiVO user who switched to a Windows Media Center PC w/SiliconDust HDHomeRun PRIME cablecard tuner (actually, I have a 2nd one I bought still in box). So I've currently got 3 tuners active and another 3 I could easily add. I'm using this along with a couple of XBox 360's as extenders. So I've already laid out the original expenses, and it's probably dumb of me to even be thinking about switching back to TiVo, but the reasons I'm considering coming back are as follows:

1) My WMC experience is mostly great, but it's not as completely reliable as it was back in the day with TiVo. My main WMC server seems a bit flakey at times (worried a bit that the computer or hard drive might be failing), and I often turn on the TV to find that the screen is in a goofy resolution and I have to exit the WMC app and restart it. This was a bigger concern a while ago, but I've since trained my wife how to deal with this bug and she seems comfortable with the workaround now. I suspect that if I update Windows or some drivers or something I can probably fix it. Nevertheless, the theme here is that the WMC experience isn't as reliable or spouse-friendly as my old TiVo HD was.

2) Even though I have a couple of XBox 360's, I really only need to have two rooms operational. So some of the added cost of running a TiVo household is minimized a bit, and saving $20/month isn't necessarily a huge concern for me at the moment.

3) I really like the idea of the iOS functionality. We have a couple of iPads. I've been messing around for a while with Plex on my WMC box and while it does a great job of transcoding already-recorded TV shows, it doesn't support live TV and the Plex developers haven't shown any interest in this being a top priority for them. I look at this as another alternative to laying out money on a 3rd TiVo. Instead of having a 3rd TiVo in my daughter's room (which is difficult to run ethernet to, so the 3rd XBox 360 for her room doesn't get used much - it has WiFi, but full-bitrate MPEG-2 HD content is too bandwidth-heavy, so anytime she'd use it, it would be flakey).

4) I gotta admit...I miss that TiVo remote. Interestingly enough, I knew this going in and toyed around with some Windows applets which would possibly let me continue to use my TiVo remote, but they were a headache to set up and never worked flawlessly. I eventually gave up and just switched to using Harmony remotes (more money spent!) but I still miss the simplicity and layout of my old TiVo remote.

So, all that said, some questions...

a) I have a TiVo HD that I got a lifetime subscription on as part of a $99 email offer I got a while back. But it's just collecting dust. If I got a Roamio TiVo as my main unit, could I somehow utilize this older TiVo HD in my 2nd room and still transfer recordings between the two boxes, or would the TiVo HD be pretty much "disconnected" from the Roamio? FWIW, I have Comcast with no pay channels, so (AFAIK) all of my channels are flagged as copy-freely. If I can't connect the two to transfer shows, then I'd probably want to just get a TiVo Mini or entry model Roamio for the 2nd room, which then leads me to my next question...

b) What kind of money can I realistically get for that old TiVo HD w/lifetime?

c) I also have a new-in-box TiVo HD which was never activated and has no lifetime service (bought it on a whim when Blockbuster was clearancing them for $99 or something, but I could never justify paying the $13/month to activate the service, so I never opened the box). I'm guessing this is pretty much worthless to anyone else, but is there some way I can make it useful for a reasonable cost or finagle (sp?) another low-cost lifetime deal for it?

d) I'm seeing that Amazon is selling the entry-model Roamio right now for $150. This sounds like a better value proposition than buying a TiVo Mini for that 2nd room. I believe that the monthly/lifetime service for a Mini is a bit less than for this box, and the Mini is obviously smaller, but are there any other advantages to using a Mini in my 2nd room vs a basic Roamio? Along these lines...how painless is the process of transferring/streaming a show from one Roamio to another?

e) If I had a Roamio Plus (with built-in streaming capability) in one room and a basic Roamio in another, could I somehow use the Roamio Plus' streaming ability to stream (to my iPad) a show that's actually stored on the basic Roamio in the other room?

f) Just how good is the streaming picture quality (when used in your home network, as well as streaming outside of the house)? I'm very picky about PQ and I couldn't find any online reviews of the Roamio or TiVo Stream that said anything other than "the PQ was surprisingly good". I'd like something more measurable than that. FWIW (for anyone familiar with this), I've used both the AirVideo and Plex apps on my iPhone to play streamed Blu-ray movies and HD TV shows and the quality from those apps is really, really good, so I'd be expecting that level of PQ.

g) I got a "special offer" from TiVo via email offering me a new TiVo Roamio w/lifetime for $575/750/900 (depending on model), but those prices don't seem like anything special. Am I missing something? For example, it looks like I could buy a $150 TiVo Roamio from Amazon and add the lifetime for $400, for a total cost of $550.

h) For those of you who have been around for a long time (original TiVo HD or even pre-HD models) and/or have experience with Windows Media Center, how rock-solid reliable are the current TiVo Roamios? If one of the reasons for me considering switching back is because of the occasional bugginess of WMC, I'd hate to find that the current TiVo experience had similar/other annoying bugginess.

i) If I was to switch back, I'm entertaining the idea of using my old TiVo remotes (I've got a few) to control both my new TiVo Roamio and Apple TV, since the Apple TV can "learn" from any remote, and the old TiVo remotes had a hard 1/2 switch on them. What features/feel do the new TiVo remotes offer that I might regret losing out on if I did this?
