Premiere v Mini

Thu, 11/20/2014 - 11:18
Until a recent thread, I had no idea Roamios and Premieres could stream their recordings to each other. This is interesting. I have a Roamio Basic and I want to extend it to the bedroom, but I am loathe to have it lose a tuner when someone is watching TV in there as all four tuners are in use as much as they are not during primetime.

Previously I had ruled out the Premiere as the number one priority for my hypothetical second box would be to watch recordings from the living room Roamio in the bedroom. Once I realized that a Premiere can actually do this, I still ruled out the Premiere due to the cost difference. However, I have been reading in the Premiere forum that people have succeeded in buying used ones, activating them for their trial period, and then canceling as it expires to be offered $99 lifetime. I have seen non-lifetimed Premieres on craiglist within a few hours drive from $50 to $100 dollars several times in the past few months.

If I could get a lifetimed Premiere for $200 or less, even a 2 Tuner original, what are the pros and cons v the Mini that you guys see? To me the pros of the Premiere is that I could get a cablecard for it for $3/mo and then suddenly have six tuners over my system spread over two machines instead of four over two machines. Accordingly I'd be able to settle my very few remaining recording conflicts and I'd also have marginally increased HD space. The pros for the Mini are that it would be up to $50 cheaper if I moved on it soon enough, that it would remove the game of CSR roulette that I will need to play with the Premiere, and that it will have the ability to schedule and delete recordings from my Roamio.

It seems like the Premiere wins by first round KO in this fight, but I could be missing something. Feel free to weigh in.

Any interest in a no-hard-drive Series 2 (TCD540080)?

Thu, 11/20/2014 - 09:25
I bought a group of computer parts from a guy in a neighboring town and the seller threw in a no-hard-drive Series 2 (TCD540080). When I plug it in, it does indeed show the 'Welcome...Powering Up' screen and there are no bulging capacitors on the power supply. I just verified with TiVo that there's no service on the machine. I don't want to see it go to waste if someone can make it into a working machine or use it for parts.

Let me know if you have interest...

Can you download paid shows/movies from Vudu or Amazon?

Thu, 11/20/2014 - 07:18
Before I buy anything from Amazon Instant Video or Vudu, I was wondering if it's possible to download the content and save it on the TiVo.

If you can download it, does it get saved in the "My Shows" with all of the other recordings? Will it be combined with other recorded episodes of the same show?

Is it the same for Amazon and Vudu, or does only Amazon allow downloading?

EDIT: Also, a bit unrelated, but can you push content TO the TiVo? For example, if I ripped a Blu-ray of a TV show and I'd like it available along with my recordings of that same show.

A couple of Genie Operational Questions

Hi All,

Was wondering if the Genie has any equivalent to thumbs up and thumbs down and also whether or not it uses an equivalent of the TiVo 28-day rule?

Delays and spinning curcles after 2.4.5c

Thu, 11/20/2014 - 05:59
Is it just me? My Tivo Roamio basic (upgraded to 3TB) updated to 2.4.5c about eight hours ago and I now get frequent but random delays and spinning circles when attempting to play, exit play or delete recordings. Ditto when entering the NPL. This is new behavior since 2.4.5c. Sometimes the delay is a second or two and sometimes it is much longer, resulting in a spinning circle.

Perhaps there is some major housekeeping still going on eight hours after the upgrade, or maybe Tivo's servers are swamped. Impossible to tell. In any event it is annoying.

TiVo TSN E80

Wed, 11/19/2014 - 23:39
Interesting thing in Enter Webz logs.
A few times in October (between 5th and 13th) I got hits/visits from a TiVo with a TSN that starts with E80...never seen that before, no idea what it is.

Even more interesting/annoying, it doesn't appear to send a DEVICE INFO event, or at least not with a details map, so I don't know anything about it except the TSN and the SW version:

(as a side note, I also get a visits from TSNs starting with A90 which I just figured out the other day is a "TiVo Preview"... apparently a Premiere equivalent of the TiVo mini as it has no recording ability. RCN still offers it as part of a home TiVo system today.)

Survivor: San Juan Del Sur "Getting to Crunch Time" OAD 11-19-2014

Wed, 11/19/2014 - 20:27

I did not see that coming. I can't believe Jon was able to get Missy to flip on Jeremy so easily. I also can't believe that Keith didn't play the idol. He's one lucky SOB.

I feel bad for Jeremy. He was completely blindsided, and he didn't really do anything to deserve it. I also don't understand the logic behind voting him out. It would have made way more sense for his alliance to throw all their votes at Alec. Nobody would have seen that coming, so even if Keith played the idol, it wouldn't have mattered.

You gotta love how Reed's entire alliance voted against him. Very bizarre tribal. :)

Person of Interest - S4E08 - "Point of Origin" - 11/18/2014

Wed, 11/19/2014 - 19:36
Person of Interest often excels when it ties the number of the week back to an ongoing arc.
This week was no exception with this week’s number, Police Cadet Silva.
It also helped that Silva was an interesting character to boot.

I realize that some have bemoaned the “is the number the victim or the perpetrator “ dance in the past but I think it worked out here as not only is Silva a match for Reese in the cojones department, we find out that she’s really an undercover Internal Affairs officer.

She’s also smart and realizes that there’s more to “Detective Riley” than meets the eye (and I suspect that she knows more about Fusco than she let on).

Her job to ferret out a mole in the Academy led us back to Dominic, who is most definitely playing the long game.
His main objectives here were to gather more intelligence on Elias and build an army, which plays into Dominic challenging Elias the other week.

And so, we’re not surprised one bit when the next number turns out be Elias.
(So how many times does someone’s number come up twice? At least Reese knows exactly who Elias is this time around.)

(And what was that errand that Finch went on?)

I had previously wondered how Shaw would react when she realized that “Mini” was Dominic and if looks could kill, Dominic would have been instantly six feet under in a lead coffin.
(In fact, I liked that Fusco had to hold Shaw back.)

Back on the Decima front, it’s been repeatedly stressed that running their missions could bring unwanted attention from Samaritan and we see that happening now with Greer sent out Martine to track down who was that mysterious women in the photograph Samaritan was working on.

And in typical Decima fashion chased the trail like a rabid dog until she finally locks gazes with our favorite Persian asset at the cosmetics counter.

Who’s looking forward to the throw down between Shaw and Martine next week?

Question about Roamio Pro Streaming

Wed, 11/19/2014 - 18:35
I will soon be getting a Roamio Pro and will be moving my Premiere elsewhere. I had planned to stream from one box to the other but I saw an email from Tivo today that said both boxes would have to be on wired ethernet to allow streaming to work. One of the boxes cannot be attached via wireless. Is this really true?

Spinning blue circle delays & a show won’t delete

Wed, 11/19/2014 - 17:04
I cannot delete Castle from “My Shows” list after I watched the episode. When select delete get spinning blue circle, tried multiple times last 2 days. I was able to delete a different show today. When I check History I see Castle in that list with the “can recover” & the “x” to the left. So, maybe it is deleted & the space freed up but the show remains in the My Shows list. I don’t think TiVo is supposed to display the same recoding in both the My Shows list as well as the History (deleted) list.

Have old software version 20.4.4a. I think there have been 2 software updates since my version. TiVo successfully communicates with server daily.

Stuck on Getting Info

Wed, 11/19/2014 - 16:41
Downloading for the past 12 or so hours. Anyone else having network issues? I also seem to remember there's a website that lists the status of Tivo's networks but can't seem to locate...

Atlantic Broadband Launches Streaming TiVo Portal

Wed, 11/19/2014 - 15:21

I think this is the second browser based utility we have seen associated with TiVo - (I know this is an MSO implementation).

We have rumors of stream based tools coming to retail, It would be nice to have a web based portal on top of the rumored Roku and Fire apps.

Guide/channel sync

Wed, 11/19/2014 - 15:09
On November 11 Charter Cable went totally digital in East Tennessee. In the process many channels where shifted, but the guide info was not. How long does it usually take for this process to right its self.

Network help for Roamio

Wed, 11/19/2014 - 14:43
I have a tivo Roamio. It's been working fine until recently. I cannot get it to connect to the internet when routed thru a router or wirelessly. Whe I connect it directly to the modem, it connects fine. When I try to connect it via the router with a cable, I get a N01 error, when I try to connect it wirelessly, I get a N24 error.

I've tried resetting everything....router, tivo, modem, ect

TiVo blog post mentions "cloud-based architecture"

Wed, 11/19/2014 - 13:38
I know there has been much discussion about cloud-based DVRs. On the official TiVi blog http://blog.tivo.com/, there is a new post that mentions "cloud-based architecture". Here is the relevant part:
Quote: We at TiVo Research and Analytics are developing some very innovative measurement solutions that we would like to share with you:

* Moving our current system to a cloud-based architecture will allow us to grow our STB data footprint to over three million households. Here is a link to the full post:

It appears they are referring to "measurement solutions" only, but the phrase "moving our current system" certainly leaves much to be interpreted. I have little concern that they are moving to a cloud storage for recordings, nonetheless this post creates food for thought. For example, Roamio users are already having issues when TiVo's site is down creating limited DVR functionality (or when one's Internet is unavailable). While one hopes that TPTB and their programmers have learned to be very careful in this area, there could be a real danger if instead they move even further into this arena.

I would love to hear more from TiVo on this subject.
