1TB WesternDigital MyBook AV DVR expander

Mon, 08/20/2012 - 14:43
Just switched back to DirecTV and got the Whole Home DVR. Don't need this expansion Drive anymore and figured I'd throw it here before eBay.

Perfect condition and I'll include the eSATA cable. This is the 1TB version with the yellow circle power button.

$65 shipped in the US via priority mail flat rate box.

I also have a 750GB FreeAgent Pro eSATA that works with other DVRs but not Tivo. Including cable.

$40 Shipped in the US via Priority mail Flat Rate Box.

PM me if you're interested.

More things on your TiVo = slower downloading time with kmttg?

Mon, 08/20/2012 - 13:25

if you have more things saved on your TiVo, do kmttg downloads take longer? I noticed that the file sizes of certain things are bigger when I have other things saved so I am thinking that causes the kmttg downloads to take longer, yes?

Is there anything one can do to speed up the time it takes other than clearing space on the TiVo?

Palette for TivoWeb icons?

Mon, 08/20/2012 - 13:02
From what I can see, TivoWeb channel icons have this format:

256 (8-bit) color
name-p1 is 65x55 pixels
name-p2 is 100x35 pixels
PNG palette index 0 has an RGB value of 255,0,255 and is the "invisible color"

I've made PNG files of the appropriate dimensions, color depth and name which fail to upload. Perhaps the value of palette index 0 is the reason.

Modifying an existing bitmap to proper dimensions and reducing to 256 color values is easy. Reducing the palette to 255 colors and shifting so index 0 is available to be 255,0,255 is not so easy with general bitmap editors.

Would someone with experience making icons recommend Windows or Java apps to shift or remap the palette to accomdate index 0?

Strike Back, Season Premeir (Season 2 US, 3 UK) 8/17/12 (Spoilers Included)

Mon, 08/20/2012 - 12:18
Pretty good way to jump start the new season. Nothing too earth shattering. They spent too much time and effort trying to make Mitra look bad ass. Don't get me wrong, I've always liked her but they just went a little overboard. I guess they felt like they had to build up her street cred before putting her in charge of Section 20. That was visible from miles away.

Looks like a big part of this season will be about trying to get the triggers back. The had the guy from Last Action Hero as the head bad guy trying to get them. He looks like the "take no excuses" kind of boss.

I still think this is one of the most realistic looking shows when it comes to gun fight scenes. Good action and good flow. A job well done.

The wife gave the OK to buy a Premiere

Mon, 08/20/2012 - 12:10
This is huge, she is sooooo cheap ;)

I want to put my Series 3 in the bed room and put the Premiere in the Den. The question I have is, the Series 3 has an external hard drive connected to it, that I wanted to put on the new Premiere, is this a problem? Not to concerned about loosing the shows, most of it is stuff my kids recorded.

True Blood "Sunset" 8/19/2012 (S5E11)

Mon, 08/20/2012 - 11:07
Must be coming to the end of a season, as the stories start to come together...

First, a general complaint: I'm getting tired of the TB season formula. Starts strong for an ep or two, then meanders into "who gives a %@$#" territory for what seems like dozens of random story lines, then comes into focus towards the end, and then the last couple of eps finish strong. Does anyone care (or remember) Ifrit or the trip to Mexico? And has a character as strong as Lafayette ever been so misused?

Another complaint: Part of what has made this season difficult to buy into is the complete 180 of so many long-term characters. After five seasons, we know what Bill or Eric or Jason are like. Character growth is one thing, but this total change in personality makes me feel "disconnected". Like my investment in five seasons is pointless.

Having said that, Pam has certainly been a bright spot this season.

Ok, back on track here...

A decent episode. Be interesting to see how Russell and the Fairies turn out. Seems like a waste to introduce the world's oldest fairy, and then have her turn to dust 30 minutes later. Ke$ha? Really?

I'm really really tired of the Authority. Talk about a plot-line that went nowhere. Bo-ring.

I'll finish out the season next week. And watch when it returns next June. But if the first 2-3 eps don't grab me, it's goodbye TB. Sadly.:(

Survivor Phillipines cast announced

Mon, 08/20/2012 - 11:05
'Survivor: Philippines' cast: 'Facts of Life' star Lisa Whelchel, MLB veteran Jeff Kent headline Season 25

Lisa Whelchel, who played wealthy diva Blair Warner in the '80s family sitcom "Facts of Life", is among the 15 "Survivor: Philippines" castmembers announced by CBS Monday (Aug. 20).

Another celebrity hoping to pad his bank account with another million bucks is retired Major League Baseball star Jeff Kent. Although he still holds a home run record for second basemen, most fans remember the National League All-Star and MVP, who retired from the Dodgers in 2009, for his fiery temper and clashes with management.

These aren't Season 25's only familiar faces. Three "Survivor" veterans, whose games ended when they were medically evacuated, will join one of the Philippines' trio of tribes: Kalabaw, Tandang and Matsing. (CBS will reveal the returnees later this week.)

"Survivor: Philippines'" new players, who range in age from 20 to 53, include two beauty pageant queens, a hunky bartender and the usual cast of quirky characters. Here's their breakdown by tribe:

Tandang Tribe

Lisa Whelchel; 49; Dallas; teen star of "The Facts of Life"
Abi-Maria Gomes, 32; Los Angeles; entrepreneur and business student
Roberta "RC" Saint-Amour, 27; New York City; investment banker
Artis Silvester, 53; Terry Town, La.; computer engineer
Pete Yurkowski, 24; Holmdel, N.J.; engineering graduate

Kalabaw Tribe

Jeff Kent, 44; Austin, Texas; retired MLB player
Sarah Dawson, 28; Silver Spring, Md.; insurance sales
Katie Hanson, 22; Newark, Del.; former Miss Delaware
Dana Lambert, 32; Winston-Salem, N.C.; cosmetologist
Carter Williams, 24; Shawnee, Kan.; track coach

Matsing Tribe

Malcolm Freberg, 25; Hermosa Beach, Calif.; bartender
Zane Knight, 28; Danville, Va.; tire repair
Angie Layton, 20; Provo, Utah; former Miss Utah Teen USA 2010
Roxanne "Roxy" Morris, 28; Brooklyn, N.Y.; seminary student
Denise Stapley, 41; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; sex therapist

"Survivor: Philippines" premieres on CBS Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m., with a special 90-minute episode.

Falling Skies - 08.19.2012 "A More Perfect Union"

Mon, 08/20/2012 - 08:56
What an epic ending - I'm on pins an needles until 2013.

My thought? The new players are friends - at first I thought it was the overlords armoured up, until he retracted his faceplate. A fishhead would have just attacked.

Do Capacitors Go Bad if Unused?

Mon, 08/20/2012 - 08:54
I just ordered a new, never used S3 OLED. In reading up on this unit I now am concerned about this bad capacitor problem. Do the capacitors go bad just sitting in an unused Tivo, or do they only start to degrade once electrical current is applied?

Series 2 drive upgrade

Mon, 08/20/2012 - 08:40
As advised, I am starting a thread for my attempt to upgrade my S2. Although TCF search brought up some threads on this issue, the last post was from 2010, so hopefully this newer thread will help anyone who comes along after me seeking the same, but more current info. Any help would be very much appreciated.
I have to say I am completely in the dark about most of the terminology I am reading as I wade thru the threads. I am a completer novice on a task such as this, but am willing to try because of the obvious excellent guidance provided by the fine members of this community - thanks! I had considered buying a plugnplay drive from DVR_Dude (on EBay), but would like to preserve my recordings, so now I am not sure.

In answer to unitron's questions:
How many computers do you have? What kind? 3 PC's, 1 Mac What kind of TiVos do you have? Use the number on the sticker on the back that starts with TCD. Tivo Series 2: TCD240080 Have you ever opened up a computer or TiVo before? Yes. Ever do anything mechanical? No. Do you have any spare hard drives lying around? No. Is your S2 currently giving any trouble, or just running out of space? Just running out of space.

My first question is this:
If I have a drive ready to go and plug in, what is the recommended method of saving my recordings? I have been trying to transfer Tivo to Tivo via my network(wireless) and that seems like it would take virtually forever.

Any next steps would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jill

Tivo can't record mpeg4 until software upgrade is realeased in April or May 2013?

Mon, 08/20/2012 - 08:36
I've read in other forums that some cable providers are starting to broadcast some channels in mpeg4 @ 1GHz. Apparently the latest Tivos can't record them without a software update and the update won't be rolling out until April or May of next year. Older S3 Tivos can't record them at all due to hardware incompatibilities.

I know that some FIOS channels are being broadcast in mpeg4, but apparently they're still compaible with current Tivo hardware and software. Cox Cable is reportedly broadcasting in the offensive format and I was curious if anyone heard of any other systems planning to do the same.

In any case, I'd be more than a little pissed to learn that my new Tivo would be usesless for recording certain channels for another 7 or 8 months.

Here's the thread I was talking about. It starts off talking about the Ceton InfiniTV4 cablecard tuner and then migrates into a Tivo discussion.

No signal, but recording anyway?

Mon, 08/20/2012 - 07:42
My cable is literally broken, dangling in the wind at the top of the pole out back. The TiVo knows enough to say "searching for signal" on every channel, but I still see the red recording lights come on from time to time. Is it really recoding a few hours of no signal, or is it just telling me it is planning to record if the signal should happen to come back?

Wait a second... Colonel Young is selling Meth now? I always knew that guy had issues.

Great episode. Not as intense as the last, but the tension is building. This episode DID have the best scene of the season though...that dinner scene! Wow! Scabby Lasagna!

After 45 days with premiere several questions

Sun, 08/19/2012 - 23:04
The first of July I upgraded from Series 3 to Premiere. I purchased the refurb special for 49.99. Great time to get the Premiere. At least I thought.

The issues I have are:

*When watching a recorded program, when I go to guide, to see what is on, if I hit the guide button again to return to the program, the Tivo goes to live TV, so I have to return to the recorded program and find my place.

*Using the Hulu plus, when watching a program, when I pause, the Tivo goes to live tv after less than 2 min. of pausing. Does the same thing using Stream Baby.

*We also have a Series 3 in another room, using the same antenna, it works fine. The Premiere, however, on several stations, is unwatchable. It pixelates on especially 2 channels. On my Series 3 I never had this problem Worked flawlessly.

*When switching from one recorded program to another in My Shows the Tivo will take between 3 to 10 seconds to respond to the command. I have learned the hard way to wait, otherwise the unit will perform the command numerous times resulting in unusual behavior.

*YouTube is not useable. Reading other posts, it appears that this is a common problem, and should be accepted as normal. Just thought I would mention it.

Just wondering if this performance of the Premiere is normal. If it is, I will deal with it. Tivo has saved me a ton getting rid of cable/satellite. I am, however, disappointed in the Premiere. If I were not committed to a one year contract, I would have stayed with the Series 3 HD and never "upgraded". Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Unsubscribed Premiere, Guide Information on Remote

Sun, 08/19/2012 - 17:10
I have been using the BuddyTV Guide smartphone app for a couple of days. It works with my unsubscribed Premiere with the Premiere connected to the LAN. It lacks some of the functionality of using the app with a subscribed TiVo, but it works well as a remote to change the channel by tapping on a show.
