TIVO vs Xfinity DVR in Houston. Why stay with TIVO?

Fri, 08/17/2012 - 16:04
I have two TIVO units, a Premier and a Series 3. I am currently paying $32 per month for the TIVO service. My wife is on me about dropping the service and going to XFinity's DVR's.

I have to say---I'm considering it! They have the On Demand that I can't get. And they have programming from iPad/Phone/Computer that I love with TIVO. The rental for two DVR's would be far less than I am paying now.

We do use Netflix with the TIVO service. I don't know if I can still get that with XFinity.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Disappointed in TiVo - Lack of Support for Series 3

Fri, 08/17/2012 - 15:41
I'm not sure where to address this or if I'm the only one who feels this way, but I figured I'd start here.

First and foremost - I love TiVo. Back in the day when it was between ReplayTV and TiVo...I chose TiVo (even waiting until Sony released their TiVo branded box to get in on the action...then had 2 of those boxes!). I was also one of the first people to buy the Series3 when it came out. It had everything I wanted and at the time, TiVo also gave me the option to transfer my lifetime subscription to that box. I was more than happy to make the switch!

But after paying a very high price to get in on the Series3, I feel TiVo stopped supporting it and instead, focused on the lesser TiVo products that came next (at much cheaper price points). I think in the (however many years - 6 maybe?) I've owned my TiVo Series3, there has been 1 (maybe 2) software upgrades I can think of for it while I've sat by watching new rollouts happen for the other boxes and bringing with it more technological advancements such as the compatibility of the TiVo app with those boxes, on demand (in certain areas), vastly more storage space, HD menus, etc.

I wish TiVo would help those who have supported the company for such a long time (including early adopters) by supporting these devices more instead of leaving them behind. Technology changes all the time and I'm sure there must be a reason a Series3 can't have HD menus for instance, but it would be great to feel supported.

Maybe I'll get the new XL4, but I'm definitely wary of purchasing something that's not more for the masses (at a lower price point) that I know will receive more updates than something that's more expensive and for a niche audience.

Just wondering if any other Series3 owners out there feel the same way (which is why I'm putting it in this forum). If I'm off base, please let me know :)

Signed - current and loyal TiVo customer -

Not receiving one channel - 747

Fri, 08/17/2012 - 13:58
For some reason, I can receive all the other channels, locals, HBO, etc. on my 1 month old Premier XL4, but all of a sudden just get a blank screen when tuning to the cooking channel, 747. Reset by me and comcast has had no effect.

XL4 and WD DVR expander use.

Fri, 08/17/2012 - 13:00
Will the 1TB WD expander work with the 2TB XL4?

Cablevision and Tivo regarding HD channels.

Fri, 08/17/2012 - 11:32
Cablevision has just launched the NFL Network on channel 150 in the NY/NJ area. If you use a regular cablevision box, channel 150 comes in HD. Not so on TiVo. Only in 480i. Will I have to cancel my tivo service and return back to a Cablevision DVR in order to get NFL Network HD? If that is the only way then I guess my 10 years of TiVo will come to an end :(. Anyone have any other info regarding this?

CableCard set up - easy question?

Fri, 08/17/2012 - 11:19
I have just decided to give comcast another chance (special deal) and I have a simple? question. I will be doing a self install.

The cable comes out of the wall and goes to my personal modem.

Do I spit the cable BEFORE the modem (then one cable to modem and another to Tivo)?

Is there another way?

Thanks (I know, silly simple question but I want to know for sure) Beforwe I try

Lost Locals on 6.4a

Fri, 08/17/2012 - 08:13
Hey all,

I lost all of my local channels yesterday and I'm not sure how to proceed. I've searched the forums and it seems that most folks that lost their local channels upgraded to 6.4a and it solved their problem. Unfortunately, I'm already on 6.4a! I've tried both Restart & Clear options and forced a call which reports that it was successful but still no luck! I also sent a re-authorization from the DTV website.

Here's my setup:

Philips DSR704
Software Version: 6.4a-01-2-101

Any ideas?

Burn Notice "Official Business" 8/16/2012

Fri, 08/17/2012 - 01:11
It was at the very beginning, but I'm not sure if it was from last week or this week, but we saw info on the weapon that killed Nate.

The specs Sam had said it was a .950 caliber projectile. That caught my eye as it does sound a bit big. Turns out you can buy a rifle that shoots that size ammunition:

I guess this explains how it went through two bodies and the sign.

Transfer shows from Series 1 to Premiere?

Thu, 08/16/2012 - 22:03
I have a new Premiere box with a lifetime contract and an old Series 1 (Sony) box with a lifetime contract. Can I transfer shows on the Series 1 to the new Premiere? How do I do that?

Season Pass Manager Transfers

Thu, 08/16/2012 - 20:07
I had a partially defective Tivo that needed to be replaced with a factory renewed Tivo. I probably had 30 Season Passes to transfer.. But, since TiVo takes the liberty to transfer the lifetime service to the new box from the old when it ships instead of waiting until I receive and install, it made it impossible for me to transfer the SPs. TiVo needs a better solution to that. Not to mention, that my partially working Tivo that was being returned had its service terminated several days before I actually got the new one. That's a poor procedure as well. TiVo should not active the new service until I receive and activate the factory replacement.

It would be cool to ask me during the activation of the new one if I wanted to auto transfer all the SPs from the box being replaced.. that would be the best way to do it. It' all just some code writing on TiVo side.

Tivo abandoning us cord cutters?

Thu, 08/16/2012 - 19:31
So is TiVo officially abandoning us cord cutters by not including OTA tuners in any of their new products? Looks like there is only one Tivo left that has an OTA tuner, and I suspect it's days are numbered.

With the number of people leaving cable, I would suspect there would be a market for OTA DVR's, but I guess not.

Hopefully my Series 3 never dies, because when it does, it looks like there might not be an OTA alternative.

OTA/streaming only since around 2005

Handling of National Weather Service warnings

Thu, 08/16/2012 - 18:55
We've been having a number monsoonal storms near us and I note that when the warning comes on and I am watching a recorded program, the TiVo switches to live. Is this standard procedure with TiVo? Hard to believe that the cable co can do that.

On my old cable DVR, the warning just played on top of the recorded show I was watching.

Just wanted to pass on our press release from this morning:

TiVo Launches Four Tuner ‘TiVo Premiere 4’

New Product Solves the Sunday Night TV Show Pile-Up and Allows Users to Record Four Shows at One Time

ALVISO, CALIF., August 15, 2012 – TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), the creator of and leader in advanced television services including digital video recorders (DVRs), today announced the launch of its TiVo® Premiere 4, a set-top box designed to solve program scheduling conflicts and allow families to record all of their favorite shows, while simultaneously serving as the hub to a TiVo whole home-setup. With four digital tuners to record four programs simultaneously, up to 75 hours of HD recording space and access to a massive library of web-delivered entertainment, the TiVo Premiere 4 is the ideal DVR for any household of TV enthusiasts.

“The TiVo Premiere 4 solves the pileup of must-see shows like Sunday nights when “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad,” “Nurse Jackie,” “Girls,” “Celebrity Apprentice,” “Game of Thrones,” “Homeland,” “The Good Wife,” “True Blood,” “Political Animals,” and “Family Guy” can overlap in a logjam of popular shows,” said Doug Bieter, Vice President of Retail Sales for TiVo. “The increasing demand for a solution to this problem and the strong feedback we have already received regarding our four tuner, two terabyte TiVo Premiere XL4 inspired us to develop this new product for consumers wanting an affordable, user-friendly solution. Can't Link Premiere to Zap2it TV Listings

Thu, 08/16/2012 - 17:44
I had a Tivo HD that I was able to succesfully link with the Zap2it TV Listings so as to schedule recordings online. A month ago I added a Tivo Premiere unit which was correctly added on their site along with my HD unit. However, whenever I went to schedule a recording I got the following error message: FAILURE! “”. Bad value for contentId in captureRequestStore.
I thought that this might be some sort of glitch with having two units.
I have now discontinued the subscription for the HD unit so that I now only have one unit - the Premiere. Unfortunately I am still getting the same error message.
Does anyone know the reason for this?
(Note: I know Tivo also has TV listings but I prefer Zap2it's because its listings indicate when a show is "new").

TiVo Premier Stuttering and Choppy Playback

Thu, 08/16/2012 - 16:50
I have a TiVo Premier that occasionally shows Stuttering symptoms and the picture becomes jerky for a while.

I had this occur on another box, that I just returned to TiVo for warranty replacement just a few weeks back and now the brand new box is doing the same thing.

I find it hard to believe that it is a bad hard drive, almost appear to me like processor lag or that the TiVo device is struggling to keep up.

Tried to figure out if recording two shows while watching another caused it, if it occured while using Netflix, and if it was just part of the recording.

Seems to happen randomly. I just did a restart of the box (first in two weeks) and we'll see if that helps.

If anyone from TiVo could help provide some input that would be great.
