Troubleshooting Guide

Thu, 06/21/2012 - 17:46
Hello All... I have an aging TiVo HD that has been experiencing some unusual issues and performance, and I could use some assistance in isolating the problem.

Setup:
TiVo HD, TWC, Cisco SDV adapter, Multi-Stream CableCard

Symptom:
I'll have shows going on both tuners, leveraging the buffer. Typically, at least one is an unencrypted HD channel (like NBC, CBS, etc). At some point the picture will stutter and after that, when I flip back to that unencrypted channel, the picture has completely frozen. I can go back in the buffer, but it as though the signal has completely stopped. I can try to go forward and get to live TV, but the arrow is at the end of the buffer and there's no picture/audio. I have to change the channel and change it back to the original station to continue viewing. When I turn it back, it tunes it immediately. There are also times where there is a "hiccup" in the buffer that I just can't play. I try to skip over it, but FF doesn't work, I have to 30s skip it to continue watching.

Potential Culprits:
Bad cable signal - Hey, it is TWC after all. However, my phone and high speed have been solid and reliable for nearly a year. I've tried to catch it on the signal meter, but haven't had any luck yet.

Bad cable card - The first one TWC gave me never worked, this one pairs and works, but looks like the guy ran it over with the truck before he got it to me.

Bad SDV adapter - It has been pretty good too (knock on wood)

Bad HDD - This is where I get nervous. My box was purchased in '07, so it is nearly 5 years old. Does anyone have a feel for the HDD lifespans in that device? It was moved once last summer, but it has been dealt with very gently in that time. It isn't rebooting or completely freezing the unit, it is just a stutter and this odd tuning behavior. That doesn't feel like an HDD.

Any thoughts on where to get started?

Need (simple) help with WinMFS

Thu, 06/21/2012 - 16:32
The hard drive in my S2 recently started the GSOD-reboot loop. As it is a 1TB with a lot of recordings I want to keep, I intend (if I can) to do a backup onto a new 1TB.

Earlier today I took the drive out of the Tivo, connected it to my PC, and ran WinMFS just to test if the HD controller was working. (I ran SMART on the drive a few days ago and it reported back as fine.) An interesting thing happened with WinMFS: although the program recognized the drive as being connected, MFSInfo reported that it "Not a TIVO drive". When I ran "View Drive Information," the lines where Tivo Software and Model Number should be were blank. This leads me to think that somehow the TIVO software has become corrupted, and that I would probably need to restore the software before I could do a clone of the dying drive to the new drive.

So here are my questions: I have a virgin 6.2 kernel I DL'd from here. Can I copy this kernel (using WinMFS>Tools>Restore Tivo Drive) to "restore" the OS on the dying drive? If I try this, will I inadvertently wipe my recordings? Any help is more appreciated than you know, and thanks for bearing with this longer post.

Any consensus on best disk for THR-22?

Thu, 06/21/2012 - 15:53
I posted this on dbstalk.com, but this may be a better forum...

The pausing/pixelation problem we were seeing with our THR-22 seems to have been getting worse.

We seem to have the most trouble with 242, USAHD, which if I read the transponder map correctly is on d10/103°. I've re-aligned the antenna, which brought my 103c signals up from mid-80s to high 90s.

This still feels like a software bug to me, like interrupt handling or poorly managed contention, but DirecTV isn't acknowledging any issues, so I suppose that if the signal improvement doesn't help, my next step will be to replace the Seagate pipeline drive we're using with something else.

Is there any consensus on hard disk brand, model, features, or settings that might predict reliable operation?

Thanks,
Heath

WINMFS: "Restore Bootpage" Question

Thu, 06/21/2012 - 15:25
When you restore a bootpage using WinMFS's "Restore Bootpage" option, does it simply write a copy of a saved bootpage to the drive, or does it completely wipe the drive? (In other words, if I restore a bootpage through WinMFS, does initiating that process mean that I'll lose everything on the drive?) Any help at all is more appreciated than you know! :(

TiVo Suggestions recording the wrong channel

Thu, 06/21/2012 - 13:10
We're having this problem with our Series 2? single tuner TiVo and our Series2? dual tuner TiVo, but not on our Premiere. On all of them our season passes are being recorded correctly. On the two SD units only - but on both of them - TiVo suggestions may or may not be the programs they say they are (about a 50-50 chance). The channels it says it recorded, but did not, are correctly shown as in the channel list as channels we do receive. On one of the TiVos EVERY time it records the wrong channel the channel it actually records is the local CBS station. This is happening on the dual tuner. I know of no way to determine which tuner recorded which show, so I don't know if this affects only one of the tuners (the reason for the 50% chance of being correct)??

This problem surfaced with both TiVo units at the same time (a few weeks ago). Both are connected to cable boxes, with IR channel-changing. Those connections appear to be fine. I've rebooted both of the TiVos and both of the cable boxes, with no improvement.

Any ideas? It sounds like a software change to me.

TivoToGo directory - no NAS/ no SD cards?

Thu, 06/21/2012 - 09:49
Using Tivo desktop it won't let me change directory to either my MYBOOKLIVE NAS, nor will it let me choose a 32 GB class 10 SD card that I have as a directory. Is this right? My laptops has a 32 gig SSD and no room for Tivo recordings.

Interesting Multi Service Discount (MSD) scenario

Thu, 06/21/2012 - 07:55
I looked around the forum but didn't see an answer to this. My situation is that I have an annual subscription on a TivoHD that is about to be up in July. However, the tivo website tells me I'm eligible for the MSD on a Tivo Premiere.

Now, I only need one Tivo, and I guess that it's my current TivoHD that's making me eligible for the MSD. So, can I buy the Tivo Premier + the lifetime for the MSD price of $399, then cancel my TivoHD subscription?

It sounds like if you decide to pay the monthly MSD rate that you'll bump up to the regular rate if you no longer qualify for the MSD, but does that apply if you got the lifetime at the MSD rate? Can they actually charge you the additional $100 if you no longer qualify for the MSD?

Would I still be able to get the MSD if I buy the Tivo from Amazon?

Thanks,
Justin

Transferring mkv to TiVo HD with a Mac

Thu, 06/21/2012 - 05:05
Can someone suggest the best way to go about this? I'm trying to figure out how to get some mkv (h264 encoded) files I've previously encoded to convert/transfer/push/play on the TiVo HD from a Mac.

Buy from 3rd party retailer and still get multi-service $399 PLS?

Thu, 06/21/2012 - 00:16
Is it possible for me to buy a new TiVo (am a current S2 PLS subscriber) from a 3rd party retailer, like electronics-expo, and still be able to activate it with the $399 PLS that TiVo says I qualify for?

I only ask because there are a few retailers that are discounting the $149 Tivo premiere (75hr model) by $30-$40 or so.

Need some advice...wanting to get a new system

Wed, 06/20/2012 - 23:57
I had paid the lifetime tivo in 2001. I had the box for 9 years when I started having problems with the unit. I paid $250 to Weakness to fix. Long story.. short.. but they did not fix it after three different times and they would not give me my money back. Bad company!! At that time I could not get a Direct TV Tivo box. So I was forced to get a Direct Tivo DVR which sucks. I would like to buy a new Premiere box for the main living room and 2 other boxes for the bedrooms. I was quoted $1300 for that. They said when I paid for lifetime Tivo it was for the lifetime of the unit. That was never mentioned otherwise I would not have done that. It was for Lifetime Tivo period!! Now they want me to pay for it all over again. I was a loyal customer and I think that is a rip off. I still have to original box. I really want to get Tivo back. I currently have Direct TV but was told from Tivo that Charter " supports their system" I can change to Charter if that would help. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

My S3 suddenly thinks my service is not active

Wed, 06/20/2012 - 22:03
My S3-- as of a day or two ago-- no longer thinks it has active service. Looking on tivo.com, my account is in good standing and that box was last billed for monthly service on 5/27. There was a network outage 2 nights ago, but aside from that it's phoned home every day, including this afternoon.

Has anyone run into this before? I tried calling TiVo customer service just now but they're closed for the evening.

Thanks,
Jason

Hulu plus not loading shows

Wed, 06/20/2012 - 21:41
My Hulu Plus was working fine during the free trial period but now nothing wil load. Also, a few series that I have put into my queue via PC don't show up on my TIVO. Anyone else having issues with being able to access Hulu? It's very frustrating to be unable to use a service I paid for. :(

Are "dead" drives really dead?

Wed, 06/20/2012 - 21:04
Hello, everyone.

After many years of faithful service, my Series 2 has begun the GSOD-reboot-GSOD cycle and it's time for a new drive. A hopeful question to any members who might have dealt with this before: when the hard drive in a Tivo gets to this point, is it still possible to copy the entire drive to a new one? (The Tivo is presently unplugged and won't be turned on again until I install a new drive.) Many thanks in advance to any and all who respond! :)

Sony SVR-3000 TiVo lifetime - $25 (mead Colorado))

Wed, 06/20/2012 - 18:19
I saw this ad for Tivos with lifetime. I didn't want to drive 35 miles each way to buy them, but thought maybe someone else up that direction could drive there and save them from the trash heap. I just talked to him and he said that is where they are going tomorrow, 6/21/2012 . His phone number is listed on the craigslist ad.
http://fortcollins.craigslist.org/ele/3057697032.html
Mead is up in Weld County in the north east corner of Colorado. Actually Mead is in the south east corner of the county, so not far from Denver. (35miles according to the web. ) I didn't ask him about shipping, but I imagine he wouldn't be interested, as he sounds very busy.

What the H-E-Double Hockey Sticks is 'The Choice'?

Wed, 06/20/2012 - 16:50
My wife and I are flipping channels the other day and came across this show that looked like a ripoff of 'The Voice.' We watch for a minute as four guys in rotating chairs listen to the 'talent' go on about how awesome or fun they are. Since the women who were auditioning had some obvious intellectual shortcomings we continued to flip channels.

Fast forward to today where I am in the break room at work when I see a promo for this show. Talks about Mike 'The Situation' being on the next episode. Huh?

What is the point of the competition? After the guys choose their picks, what do they do with them?

My best guess is this is a talent show rather than a singing competition, and maybe these guys run talent agencies for models or some-such. But then they have 'The Situation' on?

Can anyone feel me in?
