Android app cannot find Tivos

Wed, 08/15/2012 - 18:31
I am at wits end trying to get the Android Tivo app to find and connect to my Tivos. The network remote control is turned on. pyTivo and kmttg have no trouble finding both tivos. The tivo's find each other and stream fine. The app cannot find either one. Yes its on the same subnet on my home network.

Any other ideas what could be missing or wrongly configured?

Hardisk runs constantly?

Wed, 08/15/2012 - 15:29
Recently got one of these.

Could someone please tell me does the Hardisk run constantly? Very annoying if it runs 24hrs a day when in standby. And never sure when there is a good time to unplug it.

Thanks

Also any tips on getting the iPhone app to work would be appreciated.

Jumping Ship on the New Tivo...

Wed, 08/15/2012 - 14:57
I haven't been a very active member of this community the past few years while I was TiVo-less, but I jumped back into the TiVo fold last winter when DirecTV rolled out Phoenix as a test for the new Tivo. I was one of the first people to get one and I was so excited.

Fast forward to 8 months later...and I've had it. I have to say, that with what I have available to me, the DirecTV HD DVR is far superior to what they've allowed TiVo to produce.

The Tivo just makes so many mistakes and is missing so many features that I'm calling them today to see what my options are to getting rid of it. I'm guessing I"m stuck with it and I'll probably just move it to one of my back bedrooms and get things going again with the whole home setup from DTV again.

I just can't believe how disappointed I've been...this TiVo has almost no improvements over the one I used 4-5 years ago, aside from HD and folders.

Whoop-dee-doo.

I'm not sure who's fault it is....Tivo or DirecTV, but it doesn't really matter, I guess in the end when you can't do anything about it. I used to make a pretty good side living years ago modding Tivos for people, so I've been very familiar with them over the years. I'm not making this decision very lightly.

I guess I'm posting to see if anyone can talk me out of it...LOL...or hear other people's experiences and see if anyone else has done the same.

Thanks for listening! I'm looking forward to hearing what people have to say.

Video Sharing messed up

Wed, 08/15/2012 - 12:12
I purchased 3 new Tivo Premieres this week. The first one I installed and activated on this past Saturday, Aug-11. It is named “New Living Room”. The second Tivo was installed and activated yesterday, Aug-14. It is named “New Kitchen”. The third Tivo was installed and activated yesterday, Aug-14, also. It is named “New Bonus Room”.

I am having problems with the Multi Room Viewing.

I have verified all Media Access Keys are the same.
I have verified Video Shared was enabled under the preferences.

New Bonus Room Tivo can see New Living Room Tivo, but not New Kitchen. i.e. New Kitchen Tivo does not appear in the list of recordings and other MRV Tivos. New Bonus Room can transfer and stream recordings from New Living Room.

New Living Room Tivo can see New Bonus Room Tivo, but can’t see New Kitchen. I haven’t tried transferring or streaming a recording from New Bonus Room because there aren’t any recorded shows on it yet.

New Kitchen Tivo can see the other two Tivos and browse their recordings. It can transfer non-copy protected recordings from New Living Room Tivo. It can’t/won’t stream copy protected recordings though. If a copy protected recording is selected, the only option it shows is Delete.

I suspect the status/preferences/name of the New Kitchen Tivo are not being picked up by the other two Tivos. When I was activating the New Kitchen Tivo from the Tivo website yesterday, the process did not complete normally. After I entered the CC/payment info and submitted the page, it did not return. The browser timed out. When I went back to the “My Account” page, the Tivo did not have a Tivo name it. Instead, it was listed as “N/A”. I changed to “New Kitchen” and saved.

I have tried everything.
Forced connections from all Tivos to Tivo service so many times that network cables are smoking.
Rebooted everything, multiple times.
I un-selected Video Sharing, forced connections. Re-selected Video Sharing and forced connections from all Tivos.
Change the name and forced connections multiple times from all Tivos.
Repeated Guided Setup.

Contacted Tivo Chat support twice, but was only told to wait 2-3 days. Really?

Contact Support via phone. Said everything look ok on their side. Suggested unplugging network, re-booting… Really?

I’ve tried everything except wait. Not sure waiting is the answer. I’ve forced connections to Tivo service from all Tivos multiple times.

Is Tivo Support monitoring these threads? Got anything else?

Is it worth doing a delete and clear?

Tivo, if you can’t resolve this soon, I’m going to return the unit to Best Buy, get another and give bad feedback on surveys!!!

Harmony 300 - Tivo Remote Address?

Wed, 08/15/2012 - 10:54
Hi

A UK visitor here.

I have two Tivos (both series one) in the same room.

I have two peanuts, one for each.

One peanut is getting a bit sticky / flaky and so I assigned one of the modes of my new Harmony 300 remote to control it.

Unfortunately, the Tivo Remote Address on this mode is set to 0, which, of course, controls both Tivos.

Does anyone know how to set the Tivo Remote Address to any other number?

Thanks for reading.

TiVo veteran, new to Premiere question

Wed, 08/15/2012 - 07:12
While watching a previously recorded show in "my shows", I can hit the TiVo "button" on the top of the remote. This pulls up the main menu AND puts what I'm watching in the small screen in the right-hand corner. Question, is there a quick (one button click) to re-expand what I'm watching to full screen at this point? If so, I haven't figured it out yet.

Need help with deleting files in WHS after playback with Streambaby

Wed, 08/15/2012 - 06:41
After using Streambaby to play a particular file, I am unable to delete without rebooting my HP LX195 Home Server. It says the file is still open but I have completely exited the streambaby application.

Is there any way to delete the file without rebooting my server each time?

Please let me know. Thanks.

Top Gear US Season 3 Premiere 8/14/2012 (possible season thread discussion)

Wed, 08/15/2012 - 04:07
Overall, I thought the Season 3 premiere episode was rather lackluster, and reminded me much of Season 1.

However, I naturally wanted to see them do the cop car comparison.

Spoiler: I was surprised that the Ford actually beat the Dodge and Aussie-Chevy, given that it is a FWD car adapted to AWD and has a turbo. I especially thought that turbo lag would hamper the Ford, but it hit 100 MPH faster than the others did. I would have liked to see them do some sort of real slalom course to test out the handling, and not that crummy "test" involving eating donuts and Rockford u-turns.

Lewis - Season 6

Wed, 08/15/2012 - 02:34
Recently finished watching the latest season of this detective series (a spin-off of "Inspector Morse"), which I thought a particularly good season. The first ep was so-so, but the remaining three were excellent, as good as the Morse series at its best. And Laurence Fox, as DS James Hathaway, continues to be one of the most appealing and interesting actors on the BBC.

Things I find irksome about the new TiVo

Tue, 08/14/2012 - 20:57
So I received my new HD TiVo today. My other one was dying a fast death. I happily got it in only one day. But when I opened my package and looked at my new beauty, I was disappointed. The remote feels like shiny, plastic crap. I hate the new arrow button which is also hard plastic. But my biggest complaint? Where the hell is the LIST button??!! It was replaced with a ZOOM button??!! When the hell am I going to use the ZOOM button??!! So very NOT happy about that.
My dear TiVo community, please tell me there is a workaround for the missing List button. I know I only have to press one more button to get to the Now Playing list but when you're used to having it right at your fingertips, it's annoying to have it taken away.
The other thing I'm hoping there's a workaround for is that annoying TiVo Suggestions folder in the Now Playing list. I hate it. I want it gone. I will never, ever use it. Can I delete it somehow??
If I can fix these two things then my TiVo life will be complete once more and I won't have to send them a nasty letter letting them know how much I hate their new design.
I'm also not really interested in a lot of the new things they added to the software. I don't watch a lot of movies and I never order them from directv (too expensive) so most of the extra stuff just isn't helpful.

Stars Earn Stripes whole-season thread (spoilers)

Tue, 08/14/2012 - 19:56
Anybody else watching the new show on NBC, Stars Earn Stripes?

Dean Cain, Laila Ali, and a bunch of other celebrities team up with special ops guys and law enforcement and do military exercises. They are competing to win money for various charities that help families of service members or first responders.

So it's like Dancing with the Stars, kinda sorta, only with Green Berets and Navy Seals and Swat team leaders as the 'professional partners', and instead of the Samba, and the Viennese Waltz and movie-themed dances with props, we get military exercises, which in episode one includes jumping out of helicopters, and blowing stuff up.

Quote: ...their first mission: an amphibious assault. Working in teams of four, the squads will drop from a helicopter into water, take Zodiacs to shore, then blow up a tower, shoot out targets, haul ammo into a shack, plant explosives and then trigger the explosives while flying away hanging below the helicopter. Each squad will be timed for how long it takes them to complete the mission successfully. General Wesley Clark is our host, and (I'm not making this up you know) Samantha Harris is the co-host.

The show is very respectful, and the intent is to give people a clue about the dangerous crap our service members and first responders have to do in their line of work, plus give some publicity to the charities that the celebs are competing for.

http://www.nbc.com/stars-earn-stripes/about/charities/

Main show page is at: http://www.nbc.com/stars-earn-stripes/

I don't know if anybody else will watch this but me, but I couldn't resist. Because where else are you going to see celebrities learning how to blow stuff up with a grenade launcher for real?

It was great to see the girls kick butt in episode one. I'm rooting for Picabo Street.

Episode one is available online until: 09/16/2012

Edited to add: Some people are upset because they don't want to see military stuff "made into a game". I can see where they are coming from, but let's get real. People who are in the military have exercises like this as part of their training. If there are four squads in training together and they're doing exercises, somebody somewhere is keeping track of who performed better or more poorly. The trainers will, because they'll need to be able to give correction to the service members who need help, and the trainees will, because they'll want bragging rights.

The only difference here is that 1) the experienced operatives are training civilians, not soldiers, and 2) they have a civilian audience -- we get to watch. And 3) the charity tie-in.

At least here (unlike video games) maybe if people get to know the service members, and know the celebrities, they'll stop and think that yes, real people have to undertake all these tasks, and run the risk of getting killed, just so the rest of us can sit on our sorry asses and watch TV and play video games and post on forums like this here at home.

So if you've served, and you are reading this post, I say, just like General Clark does on the show:

Thank you for your service.

1080p & 4k over the air

Tue, 08/14/2012 - 18:45
people have claimed that 1080p will never be over the air.

do you think the FCC auctioning of more bandwidth over the coming years can help allievate this problem? maybe one day even 4k over the air?

"Destination Host Unreachable" TiVo 3

Tue, 08/14/2012 - 17:45
During my attempts to "Test Channels" or to "Connect to TiVo", I encounter different errors codes: N01, N04, & N24. I have done numerous things to fix it.

I have replaced the cable card. I have rebooted my network's modem, router, and switch several times. I have changed network cables.

Even though the TiVo is hard-wired to the router, I have put its MAC address into the MAC filtering list to include it; and I have tried turning off the MAC filtering altogether.

I have changed the cable's connection from one position on the 5-port switch to another on the same switch. I have moved the cable from the switch to the router itself.

I have restarted the TiVo several times.

I check my router and it says that the TiVo has an active DHCP lease on it. The TiVo3's network jack activity LEDs show activity.

I attempt to ping the IP address listed on the DHCP lease (192.168.2.86). I receive the result: Reply from 192.168.2.171: Destination host unreachable. (192.168.2.171 is my computer's NIC.)

I also have a TiVo1 with which I have no problem. I have used its network cable (with and without the USB adapter) to test the TiVo3. The TiVo1 continues to work without a hitch while nothing I have done with the TiVo3 has made any difference.

At no time has the TiVo3 worked on my network. It apparently worked without a problem on its previous owner's network.

ANN: "Buddy App" for Windows Phone

Tue, 08/14/2012 - 16:54
Hi all,

Cross-posting from Virgin Media forums. I hope that's OK with you guys.

Just a quick announcement that I (finally) got my Windows Phone app into a reasonable state and published in the Marketplace. You can find it by searching the marketplace for "TiVo" on the marketplace. Mine's the one called "Show List for TiVo". Alternatively you can just follow this link (will work from your PC or phone).

At the moment it will show you the contents of your "My Shows" list, let you see the details of individual shows and then let you play them (on the TiVo, not the phone ;)).

Note that there are different connection error messages depending on which part of connecting to the TiVo fails, so if it doesn't work for you then let me know the gist of the error message and I'll try and help out. I'd be particularly interested to hear if it works with the new 15.3 update; I don't want to do any more work until I see whether the 15.3 update locks me out again!

Let me know what you think. What features would you like next?

James

P.S. I know the name's a bit generic, but I'm doing my best to follow TiVo, Inc's trademark policy so that I don't suffer a takedown notice like TiVo Commander did.
