Refurb Tivo Drive upgrade - wait or asap?

Sat, 07/07/2012 - 14:44
I bought a 2nd Premier (with lifetime) during the current Fast-Forward sale and eventually I want to upgrade the drive but I have several questions.

Should I upgrade the drive as soon as I receive the unit or confirm the refurb works for about 30 days and/or wait until the warranty expires. Not sure how reliable the refurbs are.

Also, I've read a lot of pros/cons between the WD EURS, EARX and other drives. What appears to be the most reliable for TP right now?

Thank you in advance for the support/feedback.

Advanced format drive for a S2 DirecTiVo?

Sat, 07/07/2012 - 09:47
Has anyone successfully used one of the Western Digital AV-GP advanced format drives in a Series 2 DirecTiVo? I'm going to attempt to revive a Hughes HDRV2, and I can get a WD10EURX to use with my Rosewill RC-A-SATA-IDE SATA/IDE adapter for about $100. Is this an exercise in futility, and if so, what currently available drive is among the recommended for a Series 2 with LB48-aware 6.4a software?

Upgrade Premiere to XL4 on T-W Cable

Fri, 07/06/2012 - 17:45
I currently have a basic Premiere with $12.99 monthly service and a cable card from Time-Warner that they needed to roll a truck to install. I've ordered an XL4 from Electronics Expo ($314) to replace it since I need more tuners and don't want multiple boxes.

Are they going to need to roll a truck again to move the cable card from one box to the other?, and will Tivo honor my $12.99 rate or will they try and bump me to something higher?

I guess there isn't much of a market for a used Premiere without lifetime service, I'll keep that in the garage as a spare.

Attempting to recover my WD1600AVBS hard drive

Fri, 07/06/2012 - 17:20
We lost our TCD652160 the other night and I tracked it down to the hard drive no longer spinning. The power supply is fine though (I hooked up another SATA drive from some spare parts and it spun right up). Upon further investigation of the WD1600AVBS drive I found that the printed circuit board appears to have slightly melted the foam backing right at the "D1" chip on the board. My hunch therefore is that the issue is not the spindle, but the PCB.

Here's my question. Does anyone know whether the PCB on one of these drives can be swapped? If, say, I purchase a used TCD652160 with the exact same stock drive, can use that PCB to help bring my existing drive back to life?

Thanks for any advice.

FIVB World League volleyball

For those of you into volleyball, take note that although the World League matches being shown right now have 2010 date info, they are in fact 2012 World League matches.

Tour de France Important Weekend Programming Note

Fri, 07/06/2012 - 11:04
The live coverage for the Tour de France this weekend (July 7-8) will NOT be on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN). It WILL be on the peacock itself, NBC, and is scheduled for 4 hours (8am-noon EDT, 5am-9am PDT).

Note that even if you have set Season Passes for both NBCSN and NBC, if the NBCSN Season Pass is higher priority, your TiVo will automatically try to record the first NBCSN showing, which will be a 2-hour version starting at noon EDT. You need to manually force the the NBC version to record.

Episodes "Pucks!" (7/1/12) [SPOILERS]

Fri, 07/06/2012 - 10:27
Is anyone still watching Joey 2.0? It has some humorous moments.

"Hey, you've got some butter on your pants."

"Yep, that's butter."

Still underwhelmed by the horsey-faced Brit girl, though.

Generally poor tivo applications

Fri, 07/06/2012 - 10:08
Why are the apps like netflix and hulu plus on tivo generally poor compared to on other platforms like ps3 and roku? I love my tivo but everytime I try to use hulu plus it is maddeningly slow compared to my ps3 and even my roku. Netflix is mostly okay. I guess in general I get mostly frustrated with the slowness of tivo. I know it's handling a lot but it's just too slow in general. I'll probably just stick with using my ps3 and roku boxes for non-tivo services. I certainly wish tivo could be my only media box. I'm sure it will never happen but it would be cool to have tivo and roku form a partnership and roku would provide all the 3rd party apps and channels.

Fuzzy welcome screen

Fri, 07/06/2012 - 02:14
While swapping parts from a replacement TiVo and my original (power supply and drive) I noticed that the welcome screen on the replacement had a stainless steel background on the welcome screen.

The same screen on my original lifetime unit is a fuzzy gray screen which, as the startup progresses, gets fuzzier and fuzzier until the whole screen is almost static.

I had thought the swapping power supplies might fix it - if my original one was failing, but that didn't make a difference.

Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this?

Thanks again in advance

Lost media key

Fri, 07/06/2012 - 02:07
My tIVo failed, and while trying to diagnose, I removed watch battery on motherboard. That didn't fix it (still stuck on welcome), so I purchased another unit, same model.

After confirming new TiVo worked, I put drive for my original T in replacement. Same problem, although this time it got stuck on Almost There screen.

I then put drive from replacement T in original (lifetime) unit. After a couple tries, it booted into main play list menu. Yoppee!! However, several things popped out immediately;
1. OS on replacement drive is so old, it's missing 1 or 2 of the main menu items. I can't remember which, but it's only showing 4 choices.
2. Evidently, OS is so old it won't recognize the USB ports on my motherboard, so I can't connect to TiVo service. And, since all telephone lines in neighborhood are digital, it can't talk to TiVo using a phone line.
3. Finally, it appears that the watch battery ihad nothing to do with retaining instead of retaining at least some of the network and config settings, but it did keep the media key!

So, here are my questions;
A. Do I need the media key, and other now missing system info, that I lost when I removed the watch battery, to access my lifetime service, or is the needed sn or ID part of the firmware? I can't see any sign of an sn or eid anywhere.
2. Is there a way to upgrade the OS on this drive without using a network or phone connection?

I know I have to eventually get an upgraded drive (the one that faled was only @18 mo old! The original lasted 8 years!), but befor investing in that I want to make sure all the other equip is still working - mainly network adaptor, IR blaster, downloading from TiVo service, etc.

Thanks in advance

S3 will not load tv guide data

Thu, 07/05/2012 - 23:17
My S3 Pioneer Tivo, which has worked perfectly for years ran out of tv guide data because of a crappy Linksys network adapter. I have tried everything from rebooting, rerun guide set up and connecting to Tivo service.

When I connect to Tivo service it produces the "Done" for every step (rather quickly and not much time to actually load anything). It always reports Success on last connection. I still can not get the guide to load. All channels report "To be announced" for show information.

I use broadband and have a Comcast DTA. Have powered off/on DTA.
I have lifetime suscription. Wonder if anyone knows possible what steps in what order to clear this up.

Toshiba SD-H400 hard drive problem

Thu, 07/05/2012 - 23:16
I would like to help a charity situation who has a Toshiba SD-H400 with a bad hard drive. Does anyone perhaps have a WinMFS image for that model they could let me have so I can recreate a hard drive for this person.
Thanks so much in advance!

Rizzoli & Isles S3E05 OAD 7/3/12 **Spoilers**

Thu, 07/05/2012 - 22:25
WTH? I used to enjoy this show. It was never going to be Emmy-material, but it was fun.

I hated when they forced the Rizzoli's Mom as a regular. Please!

This week they introduce the nun? Lazy writing. She carries students' school files from 30 years ago?

I'm giving it one more episode before I delete the season pass.

hard drive

Thu, 07/05/2012 - 20:50
what is the storage compactly for the tivo's?

Can someone help walk me through this stuff ? Potential new buyer questions

Thu, 07/05/2012 - 19:17
I'm doing my best to justify the initial hardware costs of a Tivo instead of paying money to the Comcast Mafia, with subscription costs, they'll likely cost about the same for two (12.99 x2 for tivo or (16.95+9.95 for comcast)), so the question comes down to is the hardware worth it for me, so maybe someone can help answer these questions:

1) I cannot find a huge difference between the Premiere and XL aside from HDD size and THX certification. I'm buying a really nice Panasonic 60" plasma, so I'm wondering if the THX thing is a deal breaker. Any other major differences to know?

2) Are hard drives still user replaceable and upgradable?

3) Are the lifetime subscriptions only good for the life of that box? Aka, if it dies a year into it, am I screwed? What about transferability with upgrades?

4)I'm assuming the only things that really breaks on these are the hard drives, is that the case?

5)What's the deal with the networking, how can this thing be sold without wifi built in in 2012. Any other possibilities on wifi adapters for better prices?

6) Trying to justify the pricing, I'm thinking of a refurb regular premier for my bedroom and a Premier XL for the living room, once I add in wifi adapters, that's still $350-375 up front, and then the subscription charges. I've never used a tivo, I've had great luck with the fios DVR service, but I'm being forced into comcast with an upcoming move.

Please, someone talk me into this. If this is the wrong landing spot for this post, please move or ask me to move. Thanks!
