Guru Guide Help

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 17:38
I am trying to help a friend locate Guru Guides. I have an TiVo HD. He at first told me he had a TiVo. Then he told me it was a Directv TiVo. I am wondering if this is the case. To get play programs he has recorded he presses the "List" button. To record shows he presses "Guide." He says he doesn't have a TiVo button.

I was telling him to press the TiVo button then go to Kidzone Recommendations & Guru Guides. He has no TiVo button so can't do that.

Any thoughts?

Just added

Any easy button combinations he can press to find out what model he has? I suspect it is just Direct TV and no really a TiVo.

Downton Abbey S03E06 [US] OAD 2/10/2013

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 15:57
How many favors can get called in during a single episode? ;)

So many good moments. Some of my favorites:

"There's a chap in America, Charles Ponzi...."

Edith calling the Daily Telegraph for background information on her editor!

Loved the reaction shot of the Dowager as she hears Rose and Edith talking at the bottom of the stairs.

The scene where Lord Gratham bribes James into silence by appointing him First Footman -- brilliant! And his snow job on the policeman

But most of all, I'm really liking the interplay between characters as Tom and all the others carve out his place in the family.

Tom telling Lord Grantham that they need his people skills to make their new farming skills work -- genius.

I also loved all the nuances of wardrobe, especially during the cricket match. Note how on the 'big house' side, Lord Grantham has the most color on his sweater, Matthew has some, but a bit less, and Carson has one tiny bit.

In the scenes with Mary and Matthew around :36 in, plus the dinner afterwards, after dinner around :40, note the black jewelry worn by Mary, Cora, and the Dowager, and other black jewelry throughout the episode. On a recent episode of Antiques Roadshow, an expert did a display of Victorian 'mourning jewelry' and the progression of colors that the Victorians used as time went on. It's interesting to see how some of that tradition continues even into the '20s.

Not a huge surprise but good news for fans of the shows.

HR10-250 and certain transponders

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 15:08
I have a well-used HR10-250 that's having issues with certain channels, dropping out audio and video intermittently (all SD Sat channels). The one thing I've been able to find in common with the affected channels is that they are all apparently on transponders 29 and 30 (or 30 and 31, one of the two). In any case, if I show signal strength, I get 90+ on both of the transponders on both tuners, but then it drops to zero and comes back (over and over). This has roughly the same frequency that the program has while watching it (either recorded or in standard live time-shift buffer).

I connected an old hughes non-DVR tuner and all the channels looked fine and I didn't have the dropout anymore.

Where do I look on the hr10-250 to diagnose the cause here? Does this seem like a board problem? I wouldn't suspect the hard disk since it's only certain channels, but don't want to discount the possibility.

What model tivo is this HDD for?

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 15:05
So I'm getting into Spring Cleaning mode here.. I have a couple spare Tivo HDD pulls in a box in my closet.. I'd like to sell them (not doing me any good) but need to be able to identify them properly. Is there an easy way to identify which model image a Tivo HDD currently has on it? (I'm guessing using one of the upgrade boot CD procedures might be able to, but I'm not sure what to use or which commands to enter- I'm not looking to make a copy, just identify each.)

At the moment, I have three: two of them have writing on them identifying the model, so that's easy. A third just has "TIVO" written on it..

Maxtor QuickVIEW DiamondMax Plus 8 ATA/133 HDD 40GB (6K040L03102P3 / NAR61HA0)
- "Orig 540 Tivo" written on it

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 250GB 7200 RPM SATA (ST3250318AS)
- "Tivo HD Stock HDD" written on it

Western Digital Perfomer WD800 80GB (WD800AW-00DDK1)
- Only has "TIVO" written on it

Breaking Bad Season 5 (final season) Part 2 - Who's gonna die?

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 14:04
Quote: "There are going to be tears," says Bryan Cranston (Walter), who *directs the midseason premiere.
Gunn confirms that at least one regular has been informed that he or she will bite the big one before the finale. "Anybody could go at any time," she says. "Trust me, it's going to be worth the wait."

Receiver & TV Control

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 13:17
Anyone know how to set up the TIVO power button to turn on/off both the tv (sony) and the a/v receiver (Pioneer) at the same time?
In the past I set this button to turn off the tv and left the receiver on all the time and it worked great. In this case the tivo fed the tv with hdmi and the tv fed the receiver back with a/v cables (I know not the best sound).
Now I installed a new Pioneer receiver and ran the hdmi from tivo to the reciever and hdmi from the receiver to the tv. So, now if i turn off the tv I still get the sound out the reciever unless that is also turned off.
It's such a pain to turn 2 items on and off all the time so I was wondering if there's some trick way to get the tivo remote to turn off both at the same time (maybe a secret code or a double code).

OTA Reception fix

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 10:03

For people having issues with poor OTA reception I found a fix that is easy and works.

You want the central core of your coax cable to barely make a connection with the antenna connector on your Tivo. You can experiment with that and should see that it works. The problem is getting the cable to stay in place. There is an easy solution so that you can screw the coax cable in like normal and have a solid connection with good reception.

What I did was trim the central core (the pin that sticks out of the coax cable) of the coax cable down to about 25%. It is very easy and only requires a tin snip.

I was then able to fully screw the coax cable into the antenna connector for a secure connection and much much better reception. (I went from about 25-30 percent to about 70-75 percent).

This is very easy and takes about 10 seconds to do. I hope it helps since it solved my issue.

Recognize actors on TV with face recognition app Skakash

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 09:31
A new iPhone app just came out that uses face recognition to tell you who the celebrity is. Like Shazam, except it uses video instead of audio to ID the person. Pretty wild. But would you use it?

I could see this being especially useful for TiVo users because you could pause and rewind until you get a good shot of the actor you're trying to identify. Anybody heard of this or tried it yet?

Advice on Harry Potter at Universal Studios, Orlando

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 09:30
The wife and I hard going to be in Orlando in serveral weeks. About the only theme park we haven't been to is the Harry Potter attraction at Universal Studios. I can't figure out from the Universal Studio if this is part of the "Islands of Adventure" or the "Universal Studios" side of the theme park. Can anybody tell me?

Also, is there any particular order to try to take in the attractions at Harry Potter in order to avoid lines? The wife is mostly interested in the 4D ride and anythings else that isn't a roller coaster. I wouldn't mind doing the roller coaster (I've done it back before it was re-themed for Harry Potter and it's a pretty good pair of rides).

Thanks for advice.

TiVo Desktop not working reliably

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 09:26
I have approximately 20 videos stored on my NAS (Apple Time Capsule) and have made the path available to TiVo desktop (Mac version). It works well for a while, then after a few sleep/wake cycles, I can no longer access the videos from either of my TiVo Premiere's. If I stop the service from within TiVo Desktop then restart it, all works well again for a while. I'd hate to have to repeat this process every time I want to watch one of these videos. Is there a more reliable method?

TiVo didn't tape Grammys!?

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 09:26
I sat the recording via the Guide last week, even added an extra hour when it prompted me. I get home last night at 11:30 and turn on the TV, and my TiVo tried to tape the Grammy's starting at 5 PM, and ended up taping the news and 60 Minutes.

West Coast, am I the only one?

JMFS 1.04 and WD Expander - Fails

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 09:21
Ok, as you know, I expanded my Premiere 4 to 2tb, works good!

I said I would get an expander. WD, certified for tivo.

I plugged it in, it went throught its 'adding space' messages, and rebooted. Upon reboot, it went into the expand space message again

So the conclusion is that you CANNOT add an expander to a JMFS 1.04 upgraded internal disk.

I'm sure it is a partition thing.

My thoughts...

I think an 'Apple_free' partition (as partition 15) needs to be made to force a partition 16/17 pair as free. Which Tivo must use to add an expander.

I think JMFS needs to figure out how to add a coalesced partition. IE, add the new expanded space into the other MFS region on the disk. Not adding a new MFS region. This might require using JMFS on a no-data disk.

Add sort by Original Air Date

May have been brought up before, but would definitely make things easier when watching an entire folder and to stay coherent needs to be in OAD..."Fringe" or "lost" comes to mind.

The Walking Dead 3.09.13 The Suicide King

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 08:22
Interesting episode.

Sad that Daryl went with his brother and that Rick didn't find a way to kill him before that decision had to be made. I am hoping/thinking that Daryl will come back but who knows with this show.

Glen is awesome!!!!

Sad that Rick went crazy at the very end. I guess it's a stress thing.

I am betting those two guys in the new group do something to mess up the relationship maybe even causing Carl to shoot them.

Series 3 hard drive replacement

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 08:09
I have a Series 3 (OLED) that needs a new hard drive. This unit will be used in a basement rec room and not heavily used. Therefore, I just want to get an inexpensive replacement. Another 250GB drive would be fine with me. I also have a Series 3 image. I have used it for another Series 3 I have (along with WinMFS) to restore it to working condition. It worked great so I can prepare this one myself as well.

Trying to find a CURRENT list of good replacement drives to pick from. My initial research seems to indicate that I should go with a Western Digital 3.0Gb/s SATA "Blue" Caviar brand/model. Does this sound about right? I realize its probably gonna be hard to find a NEW 250GB SATA drive as this size is probably not really made anymore so can go with something larger if needed (320GB or 500GB) & the price is right. Been looking at Newegg.com, Amazon and TigerDirect. I'm wondering if this about the best I'm gonna be able to do:

Again, I'm not looking to spend a lot, but also wanted to find a CURRENT list of good hard drive replacement brands.

shark tank 2/8/13

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 06:59
the 10 second rule thing is just getting to be a gimmick when he comes back in later

the hoodie pillow seemed like a joke sorta. it seems like it would restrict you just in another way vs a traditional sweater. the airplane thing i could see being useful but will they let you on a plane wearing that or consider you a terrorist?

i still dont get the ice thing..is it just preventing the water from dripping off the can and keeping it insulated by being airtight underneath it? id love to do a test of 'hours later' claims he made about top vs bottom etc

chewing is gross as hell but i guess if you are gonna do it, may as well do it with non tobacco products:rolleyes:

i dont have as much dry cleaning as thesee people so the garment bag seems like something a bit silly to me

Our P4 got sick and passed out receiving cable!

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 05:57

This is very strange, but over a period of time our P4 started losing reception on channels - I didn't notice until my husband complained - as he's the one that watches offbeat channels.

Yesterday it got a lot worse and a tons of channels we're saying "no signal" so we contacted the cable support people.

Our setup -

BrightHouse standard cable
Tuning adapter
P4 w/cablecard

We were watching something on our AppleTV via network (not Tivo), then something on YouTube via Tivo - then that video froze. At that point we were not receiving ANY cable channels.

I reset the Tuning Adapter a couple of times - no help there
Figuring it was fault with the cable company I went to watch a recorded Tivo show - and nothing would play.
The Tivo had to be unplugged.

That cleared it up!

The advanced level tech from Brighthouse said that Tivos need to be shut down every week or so to clear them out. I don't know about that - but in this case, for whatever reason, ours died a slow temporary death until it was power cycled.

TiVo O/S got a new feature - tuner allocation

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 05:42
I just noticed this the other day surfing around in settings -
Settings & Messages> Settings > Remote, CableCARD, & Devices > Allow Live TV on Other Devices

To me, this is actually BAD NEWS. I have a P4 and sometimes actually record 4 shows at once!

What's it's saying is - if you add a Mini - you're going to lose a tuner permanently - unless you like going to the host Tivo and changing the setting temporarily every single time you want to also use the Mini - (or if you want to record 4 shows).

RECORDING ON THE HOST TIVO SHOULD TAKE PRIORITY over any other devices IMHO, and cut them off as needed - at least as an OPTION!!!!! But that's not an option - Add a Mini = Lose a tuner - is your only option.

That's a deal breaker for us - we won't be buying a Mini now.

Streaming error

Sun, 02/10/2013 - 20:41
I have Three TIVO Premiers:

LR = 75 hour, hard wired to the network - Added in last 30 days.
DR = 75 hour, hard wired to the network.
BR = 45 hour, TIVO Wireless G USB adapter.

Before adding the LR, we were able to successfully stream SD video between BR & DR with some glitches in playback. I knew streaming wasn't supported over wireless so I accepted those.

Since adding LR, I can stream from BR & LR with the same glitches. My problem is with streaming from BR to DR. First of all BR shows up two times on the now playing list on DR. Selecting the first instance shows no recordings. My recordings do show on the second listing, but when I try to play any of them I get the following message...

"The TIVO Box was not able to record this program because there was no video signal on the channel. You may have been trying to record on a channel that you do not receive."

...The same recording plays fine from the BR or the LR TIVO. It will also play fine from the DR TIVO if I transfer it.

Any ideas? I have restarted the offending boxes multiple times.

Thanks for any assistance.
