Trouble mounting partitions using MFSLive

Sat, 06/23/2012 - 14:01
I am using MFSLive for the first time and am running into problems.

Short version:

I can't mount partition 7. When I try I get the following

EXT4-fs: Update your userspace programs to mount using ext4
EXT4-fs: ext4dev bacwards compatibility will go away by 2.6.31
GFS2: gfs2 mount does not exist
mount: mounting /dev/hdd7 on /mnt failed: No such file or directory

I also can't dd copy. When I use the command:
dd if=/dev/hdc7 of=/dev/hdd7

I get:
dd: can't open '/dev/hdc7': No cuch device or address

However I can use pdisk for both hdc and hdd and get a partition listing.

Long version:

I have a 500GB drive that is in a GSOD loop. I believe the swap partition is too small. I accidently made it 127 instead of 511.

I have a new 500GB drive that I want to copy the contents of the original drive to, but this has a 511MB swap space.

I created the new drive using the same original image as the old one but used a 511 swap size. This drive was tested in a Tivo to make sure it works.

I now want to copy each partition except the swap partition from the old drive to the new drive. I am aware that the extra MFS partition on the new drive will be smaller than the old one since the swap partition is larger. I am hoping there is nothing in the end of that partition so nothing will be lost.

I tried doing a mfstool backup | restore but it said the drive wasnt big enough. I am guess that is because I'm expanding the size of the swap partition and it is not shrinking the size of the extra MFS partition.

I also can not use WinMFS to do a copy because it keeps crashing on this computer and I do not have another desktop that I can try it in or USB enclosures to put the drives in.

So doing the partition copy seems to be my only option.

I have always used the MFSTools v2.0 boot cd with lba48 support. The problem with that is I can't use pdisk or mount the partitions unless I boot with vmlnodma. That will seriously slow down the copy of a 500GB drive. So I wanted to see if MFSLive could do it with DMA on. It was looking good until I couldn't mount or dd.

These are series 1 drive so when I booted MFSLive I used option 2 which specifically says is for being able to mount partitions 4, 7, and 9.

The old drive is hdc and the new one is hdd.

The only reason I need to mount /dev/hdd7 is to confirm that the copy was OK. There is a difference in the rc.sysinit files and mounting it after the copy is a good way to confirm the copy was ok. But of course I can't even dd at the moment.

I couldn't find anything out there about this problem specifically for the Tivo partitions.

What do I need to do to mount the Tivo partitions and dd copy everything?

Push Girls on Sundance - anybody else watching?

Sat, 06/23/2012 - 13:00
I found this new show just before the first episode and have been watching. It's only 3 or 4 episodes in, I believe.

It's about four women (all very attractive women, I might add) who are in wheelchairs and are good friends. It's about their lives and friendship.

I really like the show very much.

Unexpected dd_rescue Marathon

Sat, 06/23/2012 - 12:59
Hello, everyone.

Before I start, I want to publicly and sincerely thank HomeUser, Unitron, and Guy Kuo for providing almost immediate, very patient advice to me over the last few days that I have tried to recover my drive. You are indeed princes among men, and if I could buy you all a drink of your choice I would. I'm new to this forum, but can honestly say that I know it is a better place for their presence.

I've started a new topic as opposed to keeping this question in my ongoing thread because I'm hoping to get as many confirmations of my suspicions as I can. Here's my problem: I have a dying 1tb drive that I'm attempting to clone to a new 1tb drive. I'm using dd_rescue (the command I used was: dd_rescue -A -v /dev/sda /dev/sdb) to do the clone. The program has been running for almost 21 hours now and seems to be stuck in a loop. The only screens I get are ones referencing bad sectors, but the program has done nothing to indicate that it's actually transferred any files from one drive to another.

I did some research and came across this site

Which provides a helpful screenshot of what (I think) the program should display when it's actually copying files. According to the site, I should be seeing something like this.

I have not seen this message, at all, for more than a second or two in the last 20+ hours. All I have seen is screen after screen of bad sector information. The message does pop up after a bad sector is detected, but again, there's no information at all to indicate that files are being copied.

The only thing I can think of to explain this behavior is that the PCB on my source drive is damaged, enough so that it will not allow dd_rescue to actually transfer files.

With that in mind, here are my questions.

1. Does dd_rescue attempt to ignore all of the bad sectors on a drive before it actually starts to transfer files from one drive to another?

2. Assuming that I actually have this many bad sectors on the drive (i.e., that the PCB board isn't damaged and just shooting out errors because it's damaged,) is it normal for bad sector detection to take this long?

3. Is there a limit to the number of bad sectors a drive can have before it's actually unrecoverable?

4. Is there a point at which it would be reasonable for me to terminate dd_rescue altogether, and attempt to clone the drive through other means? (Most likely I'd use MFStools>MFScopy or the JMFS boot disk I found here yesterday.)

(In case anyone is interested, I'll upload video of what's going on later this afternoon.)

Special thanks again to HomeUser, Unitron, and Guy Kuo for all of your help these last few days, and many many thanks in advance for any new insights gathered through this post.

The Series 2 single tuner

Sat, 06/23/2012 - 12:15
I don't see much on this model.

I think it's a rare gem that's overlooked. In my home office, I have a small TV, and no need for HD. I bought one of these and a wire to hook it to the DTA (I'm on Comcast where everything is encrypted now).
The TiVo talks to the DTA and I'm able to record the 2-90 channels. Right now, the DTAs are still no extra cost.

I just grabbed another one with lifetime, for $75 shipped, to gift to my sister-in-law. No TiVo monthly charge, no outlet fee. And a fresh hard drive on my shelf if/when my own drive fails, so not like she needs to worry if an old device breaks.

I am getting old, paid $800 for my first VCR. But I digress. Just making conversation, wondering if anyone else uses a S2 in a small room that has no need for more.

Netflix on Tivo HD gives "Error Communicating"

Sat, 06/23/2012 - 12:07
About 4 days ago our Tivo HD started acting up, but only with netflix. It had our instant queue, and after selecting a movie, and clicking play, it would give the "error communicating with netflix". This happens on every movie. All other networking on the device works (amazon vod, youtube, etc works). Also our Tivo Premiere with the new netflix interface also works fine.

I opened a ticket with Tivo, and they gave me a bunch of suggestions including

1) giving the Tivo a static IP
2) putting the Tivo in a DMZ
3) turning off and then back on VOD services from the tivo.com site (with associated connection checks and reboots)
4) lots of hard reboots

none of these worked to solve the problem.

so I did some other troubleshooting

1) I swapped the location of the Tivo HD and Tivo Premiere (premiere still works HD does not for netflix).
2) deactivated and reactivated my device from netflix using the Tivo
3) deactivated all devices from netflix and reactivated my device
4) I cleared thumbs ratings
5) I cleared everything (using the clear everything setting), which forced me to completely re-setup the device

Even with all this I'm still getting the error.

Note, I also have netflix on a Blu-ray player and it has no problems on the same network.

Anyone have any other suggestions. Tivo Support seems to be out of ideas as well.

Whats the chance that someone has an image for an old DSR6000?

Sat, 06/23/2012 - 11:24
My oldest and dearest Tivo just died. I would like to put a new HD in and image the drive. I know this is a super old unit, but any suggestions would be great. Some type of HD Image would be the best..

Thanks in advance..

Will Tivo let me switch a broken TivoHD w/lifetime with Tivo Premiere

Sat, 06/23/2012 - 10:54
I have a tivoHD and a Tivo premiere both with lifetime.

My TivoHD is on the blink and I need to replace it.

I see ads for refurbished Tivo Premiere for pretty cheap (less than 100, service required but no contract required to "buy"). If i buy one, can I call up tivo and swap out the lifetime tivoHD for the premiere?

I am pretty sure if I get another tivohd they would probably let me swap it out, no?

Streamed music from mac stops

Sat, 06/23/2012 - 10:37
Apologies if this has been answered already - I can't seem to find it.

I am trying to stream music from an iTunes library on a Mac to a TiVo Premiere. It took some doing with lame to get it to work with AAC (and particularly with "Matched AAC" files), but it's all working.

The only problem now is that if I use the Channel+ button to skip a track while it's playing, playback will halt at the end of the next song.

From the looks of the console log, it seems that the connection isn't being shut down cleanly when I use Channel+:

I get this problem even when I'm playing an all-mpeg playlist, so I don't think it has anything to do with my lame/AAC hackery.

Does anyone know of a solution?

I'm running OSX 10.7.4 and TivoDesktop 1.95a.

I like the Pilot. It was heartwarming and funny.

I loved the part where Ben finally held his daughter and said "Daddy is here".

The Premiere and multiple TiVo remote codes

Sat, 06/23/2012 - 08:28
I just got a Premiere to replace my original Series3. Temporarily I have them both hooked up so that I can watch the copy protected recordings which I can't transfer (like a stack of the season's last episodes of Mad Men). I set the S3 for remote #2 and slide the switch on its remote to that position. Now the S3 will only respond to that remote, but the Premiere will respond to both. I thought that it was because it was set for remote 0, but I set it for remote 1 and it still responds to both.

Does anyone know what's up with that? If there's anything in the Premiere's user's guide about it, I'm missing it and I don't find anything in the searches I've tried on this forum.

Suddenly no video or audio

Sat, 06/23/2012 - 00:11
I have a TiVo Series 2 box. I woke up this morning to find clocks in my house were flashing. Apparently we lost power around 2am, based on the time showing on the flashing clocks. I don't know how long it was out.
When I checked this afternoon to watch a program I had set to record this morning it was just static. I checked my cable box and found that it was off. After turning it on I was able to watch tv normally.
This evening I was watching a ballgame, and realized that the TiVo record light was on. Checking the settings, it was supposed to have changed the channel and recorded a different show. Instead it recorded the ballgame I was watching.
I checked to make sure the blasters were still attached to my cable box, and they were.
I did a restart of the TiVo, and that didn't help, so I did a Repeat Guided Setup. When it got to the part which says something like "Do you see a picture?", I had no picture (or sound). I checked my cable box, which seemed fine, but to be sure I unplugged and replugged it again.
I am able to watch tv normally with my cable box. When I go to Watch Live TV from TiVo Central I get a blank picture and no sound.
I am able to watch the tv shows I've already recorded, so there's no problem with the TiVo to tv hookup.
I tried setting the TiVo timer to record a show. At the specified time the TiVo began recording, but it did not change the channel on my cable box to the requested channel. I physically changed the channel on my cable box but I get no picture or sound regardless of the channel.
All cables are secure. Nothing was changed in the setup. It worked fine yesterday, and now doesn't.
Can someone tell me what to check next?

Can you transfer recordings from a TivoHD with a failed power supply?

Fri, 06/22/2012 - 22:19
I've got a TivoHD with what I believe to be a failed power supply. It's got no lights on the front and I can't hear or feel the fan running. I've been considering getting a Premier XL4 for awhile now and rather than spend money to replace the power supply I think I'm just going to buy a new Tivo.

I'm wondering if it's possible to transfer my programs off the TivoHD to a Premier XL4. I upgraded the drive in my TivoHD to a 1 TB drive a couple of years ago if that makes any difference.

The Firm

Fri, 06/22/2012 - 21:50
Last week's episode was preempted by U.S. Open coverage but the change wasn't reflected in the schedule in time, so my TiVo, at least, thought it was recorded so wasn't going to record tomorrow nights episode.

Kickstart not working

Fri, 06/22/2012 - 18:20
My S2 froze like another thread documents. No problem, I thought (although annoying). I unplugged the unit, waited about 15 seconds, and restarted. When the TiVo got stuck on the Welcome acreen, (after a curse or 4) i tried again.

When that disnt work, i performed the Kinckstart procedure.

However, that doesn't work either! The lights go amber, I enter the code (57), and the left light immediately goes green. The right light remains amber.

Hower, the TiVo does not restart into the Kinckstart menu. It stays on the Welcome screen until I unplug the unit.

??? I can't find any threads on kicks tarting doesn't work.

FYI: TiVo is 10 years old (original owner), hard drive upgraded to 1TB Nov 2010 and the fan was replaced. No do drive noises, although fan is going bad again.

Thanks in advance

XL4 only recieving black screens for video

Fri, 06/22/2012 - 14:19
I just recently purchased the new Premier XL4. After going through several cable cards and to this point 3 service visits, it is still not working. All I get for video is a black screen that says there is a problem with the cable signal. My video cable strength is strong enough (89-90db). The cable cards are paired with the TiVo. I have worked with TiVo support and so far the only thing we can find that under the cable card menus, If you go to the CA menu, application data (two screens in) the data is not being downloaded from Comcast. Anyone else run into this and have a solution?

Please, thank you in advance.

The Royal Pains summer 2012 thread (spoilers allowed through the current episode)

Fri, 06/22/2012 - 11:26
Anyone still watching this? This is still one of my favorite summer shows (and might be top 10 favorite of what is currently on TV, no matter what the season). But, I'm not sure I like the Hank/Evan fued. I agree with Divya, they need each other. Hank has no business sense, and Evan, is too overly driven to see the field before the trees. And of course his choice of Doctors are wrong.

Plus, they did a really curious misdirection with Jill. First she's leaving, then she's not, then she's leaving again? Has she completely been written out? She's kind of a strange character anyway. She's supposed to be a doctor, but whenever she's with Hank, it appears she knows NOTHING about diagnosis or medicine in general. And then she's going to Africa to treat patients there. Anyway, I'll miss her character. Nice eye candy, and I liked her chemistry with Hank.
