With the upcoming mini, I would really like to see a 4 tuner TiVo unit with the above capabilities. It sounds like the only way to fully utilize the mini (where it borrows tuners) is to have a 4 tuner unit. Unfortunately, there is not one available for the OTA users out there.
I really liked the show last year but either it changed or I changed because I found the first episode to be very pretentious.
Also the whole "sex" scene with Marnie was so distracting with the actress trying to cover herself up from the camera all the time. OK I get it if you are an actress and you don't want to do nudity then the director or the cinematographer need to block it better. Or even leave your bra on but her constantly covering herself with her hands when the guy would move was like she was destroying the 4th wall. Or even don't be a prude, not need for gratuitous nudity but at least take the English actress approach that incidental nudity is fine.
OK, I have an S3 (OLED) unit with lifetime service. About a year ago, it started freezing up on me. I opened up the case and saw a bulging cap on its power adapter. I didn't feel comfortable replacing this cap so I took the power supply out and took it to a local shop to have this one cap replaced. I asked them to test the others and they said they were all good except this one so it was $17 to have this fix.
Got it home, plugged it in and it still ultimately wound up freezing up on me. I then unplugged the coax cable and noticed that it wouldn't freeze up at all on me. I could play back any recorded content fine, transfer to/from the unit, use Netflix, etc. Was just not able to have any kind of 30min live TV buffer. Therefore, I figured the stock 250GB hard drive had somehow gotten corrupted & either needed replacement or a new image to it.
I was then able to get a hold of an Series 3 (OLED) image for it and had a spare Western Digital 500GB SATA drive that would work as a replacement. I finally was able to get the image successfully put on the 500GB drive via a desktop PC. I put it in the S3, powered it up and went through the setup process. All worked good and it was running fine for months.
Now, this S3 is not heavily used and basically in a finished basement rec room. For months, not a lot was recorded to it and it essentially is a cable box for when guests or family members were over and staying in that area of the basement. All has worked good, but over time I decided to use this S3 to start programming some season passes & record some weekly shows. Then offload/MRV them to our main Premieres upstairs. Sort of as an additional storage device on the side.
Well, just the other day I noticed it is starting to freeze up again like before. I unplugged the incoming coax and as before, it works perfectly fine and all other functions can be performed (Netflix, Pandora, MRV, playback, etc.). Since nothing important is recorded to it (or I can MRV stuff if needed), I'm willing to put another freshly imaged drive in it, but I wonder what is really going on here.
Basically, it seems like if too much stuff is recorded to it, it winds up not functioning properly and freezing up. Any other thoughts on what could be the problem here?
OK....so, should I really start watching it?
Is it really as good as all the publicity, hype and awards?
I'm generally not a fan of period shows or of British television in general, so what is different about this show that would make me like it?
In general, I have loved Big Love, Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Nurse Jackie, Shameless, Nip/Tuck, Sex and the City, Homeland, Grey's Anatomy, Law & Order (s), Modern Family, Rescue Me, etc.
If I like those...am I likely to enjoy Downton Abbey or......? thanks!
Many times there are a few scenes in a recording that one of us would like to share with others in the family: segments in a talk show; sports plays; scenes in a TV show or movie; etc. Currenly in order to share these with others you need to FF and skip your way through the recording trying to remember what you wanted to share and where they reside.
It would be great if you could set your own index marks on the status timeline that could then be quickly accessed at a later time. This could be as simple as pressing the enter key while watching a live broadcast or recording. The status timeline could quickly be displayed with the new user mark showing along with any previous additions and the standard 15 minute index marks.
Is there a way to switch back and forth between the two tuners (streaming) while on the TiVo app?
I know that clicking on the Live TV button on the remote will cycle between the 2tuners to the other station, I don't think there is functionality to do this on the app.
BENEFIT: I frequently watch two stations at the same time. Pausing one station when it gets to a commercial, cycling the Live TV button and resume (play button) on the other tuner. Then when that tuner hits a commercial, press Pause and cycle to the other tuner back and forth...until they both hit commercials...lol
I'd like to be able to do this with my stream.
Any ideas? -Chris
Can I connect the Tivo Premiere to a Westell 7500 modem/router by simply connecting an ethernet cable from the back of the Tivo to an open port of the Westell 7500?

I just purchased my first Tivo (Premiere XL4) last Saturday. Installed the cablecard I picked up from Comcast and surprisingly got it paired/activated with only having to talk to two Comcast reps (I consider that pretty lucky based on what I've read). The Tivo seems to be working flawlessly.
One of my main goals was to be able to record shows and transfer them to my PC for editing and converting to other formats. I've used VideoReDo for several years with H.264 source files (Hauppage HDPVR, Silicon Dust HD Homerun, Blu-Ray Rips, etc). I also knew that VideoReDo supported .tivo files so I was anxious to try them out. I spent many hours reading about pyTivo and kmttg. I ultimately installed both and set them up. I've been successful in setting up some media shares with pyTivo and pushing some mp4 files to the Tivo which have played fine (SD files though). Tonight I tried my first pull from the Tivo using pyTivo of a recorded broadcast show (Modern Family). The pull completed successfully but I found I couldn't open the .tivo file in VideoReDo (or WMP) since I had not installed Tivo Desktop (so it couldn't find my MAK). I downloaded Tivo Desktop, installed it, and viola - both VRD and WMP played the .tivo file beautifully. So far, so good.
Next I tried a straight recode from VRD. I chose to output to H.264 (mp4) from VRD. In the options I left the audio encoding at "Automatic". The recode completed and I went to play the resulting mp4 file. I was unpleasantly surprised when WMP played the file as there was no audio. I then played the mp4 with VLC and it played fine. When the file was playing in VLC I checked the audio track and it only showed one (track 1). I also used MediaInfo to look at the mp4 file and it showed AC-3 6 channels for the audio (again a single track). Any ideas why I am not getting audio through WMP? As an aside, I can play other files in WMP with AC-3 audio fine (though they are .m2ts not .mp4). When I look at the .tivo source file with MediaInfo I can't determine the audio codec used so not sure if that comes into play or not.
The other thing I noticed is the source appears to be 1280x720. I don't know why, but I was thinking ABC was broadcasting 1080 not 720. Could I have something incorrectly set on the Tivo to record 720 instead of 1080?
I haven't yet tried to push the recoded file back to the Tivo or attempt to play it from my media server. Just noted the lack of audio in WMP.
Anyone have any suggestions or comments to help me?
My TiVo HD is 200 miles away from me most of the year. I have a Slingbox so I can watch my THD at any time, yet i don't get a chance to check my "now playing" often. More than once i have forgotten to watch recordings of shows that i didn't know "would have new episodes so soon."
My story aside, i wish i could have TiVo email or text me when certain shows are recorded. If this already exists, please let me know! Thanks all!
Hmm, not a good sign that there's no thread over a week since "Deception" premiered. . . .
I should note upfront that I passed on "Revenge," a decision I was regretting after the first season, but maybe it was for the best given some of the reviews I've read about the second season. Anyway, I realize that there are some similarities between the two shows, but I can't make any comparisons since I haven't watched "Revenge."
With that in mind, I liked the pilot episode. The Bower family dynamics seemed a bit trite, but Victor Garber is always a pleasure to see on screen. I thought Meagan Good was really strong as Joanna, the detective sent to infiltrate the rich and powerful family that she grew up with . . . as the daughter of the housekeeper/servant(?).
It's especially interesting that the lead actress and one of the other primary actors are African-American, yet the show hasn't, as far as I'm aware, made a big deal out of that. I think that's great, that this isn't billed as an "African-American show," but a mystery/soap that happens to have some primary characters who are African-American. There's not even an emphasis on Joanna's race/class, even that's an obvious part of the relationship between her and the murder victim that drives the main plot.
CNET was all set to select the Dish Hopper for its Best of CES award but parent company CBS said no, supposedly due to ongoing litigation between CBS and Dish.
At least one CNET staffer, Greg Sandoval, has resigned over this.
A while back I upgraded this tivo S3 with a 1tb drive. It appears that drive is now going bad. when using winmfs it stops at partition 12 and never finishes. I have left it overnight and no progress. when I attempt to do a backup of the os, boot and the other options it appears to be ok but I can't restore those to my new drive, I get node 1 or node 0 errors.
trying the dd-rescue now but after 15hrs I think its only 6gb complete.
I have used windows tools on the new drive to check it for errors. It has been formatted to NTSF and chkdisk has been run on it. since then I have run diskpart and clean. also formatted in winmfs.
Have I screwed up the new drive? Is there a trick to copy over a drive that has already been upgraded?
Been working on this for days.
GREAT stuff! Very insightful! I'd recommend it for any car or tire enthusiast. It doesn't just focus on manufacturing but also focuses on testing and R&D.
Kinda funny to see them drifting big trucks.
I don't see it airing in the next two weeks so I guess you'll have to watch it on YouTube or thru some other means. Not sure how long it'll stay up.
I am in Ontario,Canada and thinking of buying the following on Ebay:
TiVo Premiere Receiver Series 4 in Box TCD746320 HD
Can this be used for OTA,ie: HD Broadcasts?
btw: Is it possible to buy one on the TIVO website and have it shipped to Canada?
I recently replaced the power supply on my Tivo HD TCD652160. The new one I put in was identical to the one I took out only the capacitors were good. I then found a complete unit on Ebay that came from a highly rated individual, and I got it for a fraction of the price I paid for just the power supply, even though I got a fair deal on the new power supply also. The question is, the power supply in the complete unit is very different from the one I took out and the new one I put in. The foot print is the same but the arrangement of the capacitors, cooling elements and coils is not at all like the other two and I was wondering if anyone knew what was the reasons for the two different power supplies? Is it simply just different suppliers with different design solutions or was it a design fix when all the power supply issues were discovered. Thanks in advance for your time.
TiVo HD upgraded to a Hitachi HD31000 1TB drive. It has a single M cable card provided by Comcast.
Symptoms: Video and audio will freeze randomly and repeatedly. The actual freeze time will last for several seconds, play again for a second or so, then freeze again for several seconds. The freezing episodes will usually last for several minutes. When it happens, commands from the remote are sometimes ineffective. Sometimes I am able to get it to respond and fast forward until it video resumes normal playback. The pausing effects recorded content, recording content and "live" TV. In fact, I've found that when video freezes in and out on a recorded program, it effects live TV as well.
This behavior causes the TiVo to reboot about 1/3rd of the time. Usually it will reboot when I am unable to get the TiVo to respond to remote commands.
Additional info: I don't know if it's related or not, but I've had problems with the tuner for over a year. There are some occasions when watching one channel will cause the other tuner to go black. (It will not show any video or play any audio when this happens)
Does this sound like a hard drive in it's last days of life?
I am looking for some help with a new remote control. The remote control for our Hughes Tivo had some buttons that were getting hard to function so I bought a replacement remote(same model number) on Ebay. It works great for the Tivo but I cannot get it programmed for the TV. I know the TV is supported since the old remote works. One thing I noticed is when I type in the codes sometimes the red light blinks three times and sometimes it does nothing. I also tried the automatic one where you type in the 0999 code. The instructions say to press the channel up button every 2-3 seconds and if it reaches the end the solid red light will go out. In my case the red light goes out after pressing the channel button once. Is there a way to get the code that the old remote is using? Anything else I should be trying? Am I missing something simple? I've tried researching this in the forums but have not found anything that helps.
