Upgrade internal drive or just add USB

Sun, 09/02/2012 - 20:32
I'm about to order a Premier. I've upgraded Series 1 Tivos in the past and am comfortable with the process. I read that the new JMFS cd is even easier than the old MFSTools...

But, why not just add an external USB drive and be done with it?

Thanks in advance...

Newbie with DirecTV TiVo questions

Sun, 09/02/2012 - 15:24
My roomie & I have had DirecTV since last fall and while we love the lineup, not being able to archive what we record was a bummer.

I eventually talked him into letting me spring for the THR22 as I had fond memories of the first TiVo I owned from almost ten years ago. One of the things I'd been able to do is archive material from it to the then relatively mainstream VCD format with the help of my Mac.

I've been reading up on iTivo & KMTTG as options to grab material off the THR22 and archive it.

I mostly have had a really tough time finding much of anything about doing this with the THR22 and wondered how successful it seems to be? My current set up is a Mac Mini running Mountain Lion 10.8.1.

Also, I really like the TiVo app for iPhone and have been playing with it. Maddeningly, there is no explicit mention if it'll work with the THR22 either?

I really hope it does as it seems to find a whole lot more obscure programming than the default DirecTV iphone app does. I've even found stuff in the TiVo app and tried looking for it in the DirecTV app only to be stymied by the message that nothing matched my search. How weird is that?

Anyway, I really like DirecTV & love TiVo too and I've read that the current experience leaves a bit to be desired, but so long as it basically works and lets me archive as I'm planning, my roomie and I will be happy.

Can anyone advise me or share any experience they've had going down this route?

Thanks!

ABC has ordered a pilot for 'S.H.I.E.L.D

Sun, 09/02/2012 - 15:17
Coming straight off the enormous success of 'The Avengers' movie, ABC has ordered a pilot for 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' -- the espionage and secret military law-enforcement agency in the Marvel universe.

The network has also brought on the film's director and writer, Joss Whedon, to executive produce and pen the project alongside his brother, Jed.

It will mark Marvel's first live-action television show and a return to television for Whedon, who has plenty of experience on the small screen with 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer', 'Firefly' and 'Dollhouse'.

'S.H.I.E.L.D.' made its debut in the comics in Strange Tales #135, which was published in August 1965.

It has always been centered around director Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson in 'The Avengers'.

There's no details yet on which superheroes we may see on the show but Whedon will have a plethora of characters to pick from the vast Marvel universe.

It's probably safe to assume that he will be looking to differentiate the TV show's world from the film, with 'The Avengers' sequel slated for 2015.

TivoHD - one channel freezes intermittantly

Sun, 09/02/2012 - 15:15
I have a TivoHD over OTA with a strange issue. It seems that often times when I turn the TV on in the morning, I find that it is frozen from the last time it was turned off. Just that single channel is frozen -- if I change the channel, the other channels work, but that original channel remains frozen. From putzing around, I found that if I go into the signal strength screen, it will clear it out and fix that channel.

Any ideas as to what is happening or how I can fix this strange phenomenon?

Premium channels/guided setup question

Sun, 09/02/2012 - 13:04
I am thinking about adding some premium channels. Now I have not had to rerun a guided setup in quite a while, but I remember that one of the questions it asked is about premium channels. So here's my question: Does answering "yes" to that question do anything else than add the channels to the lineup? If I add, HBO, fot example, can I just add the HBO channels into my lineup or do I have to rerun guided setup for some reason?

Series 3 HD tivo HD problems

Sun, 09/02/2012 - 12:12
I have a HighDef tivo and had a WD external hard drive hooked up through ESata. Has worked great for over 3 years. Then a short time ago the tivo started getting stuck on "Welcome! Powering up..." screen. I researched these forums and the problem seemed to point to a hard drive problem after the initial steps of evaluation failed. My first thought was the tivo hard drive because I have had multiple tivo HD fail in the past. But before I went to gutting my tivo and replacing the internal hard drive, I tried uninstalling the external HD and poof. It would work. So naturally I blamed the external HD and bought a new one ... hooked it up ... and now same problem. Best thought I have now is to blame the ESata port on the tivo itself and I have no clue how to problem shoot that one.

Any help would be appreciated.

Looking for TiVo HD Test Code(s)

Sun, 09/02/2012 - 11:44
Recently my TiVo HD with an upgraded 1 GB drive seems to have glitches in programming. Sometimes the show just stops. Picture will be blank for 30 seconds or so. Other times there is pixelation. It is still intermittent, but it seems to have gotten worse over the last 3 months.

I thought I remember reading in these forums that there were some test codes or diagnostics that you can enter into your TiVo and it would run some tests.

I have searched, but have not been able to locate them. If my memory is correct would someone please point me to them.

TIA!

what's the latest HD software version?

Sun, 09/02/2012 - 11:13
OK, I have two Tivo HD's - both stock hard drives. Last night, they both went for a dive and froze up.
One was rebootable, and so far, one has not come back.

The one that I was able to restart (after pulling the AC cable) has software version:

11.0k-01-2-652

Does anyone know when that came into being?
I am suspicious because BOTH my HD's (with Cox Cable Cards) froze up within two hours of each other.

Missing ESPN GoalLine

Sun, 09/02/2012 - 10:00
I have a Tivo Premier XL4 in one room and a Comcast supplied HD STB in another. I also subscribe to the Sports/Entertainment package and receive all the channels in the package on both TV's. On the Comcast STB, ESPN Goal Line was added earlier in the week and I receive it with no issues. On the Tivo box it was intially not added as it was on the Comcast STB. I opened a missing channel ticket with Tivo and they have since added it to their on screen guide. Problem is when I tune to the channel, it says that it is not available and to contact my cable administrator. Keep in mind, I have this on my other TV with the Comcast STB but just not with the Tivo box with the Comcast cablecard. Any idea what's going on here????

green / gray screen Tivo HD hangup :(

Sun, 09/02/2012 - 09:56
all of a sudden, my Tivo HD can't get past the "starting up - welcome" screen. The next thing I see is a solid green/gray screen. Only one light is present on the front panel: the far left-hand light.
Network connection LED's are glowing on the back panel, and the hard drive is the stock unit - no upgrades have been done.
It's a "lifetime" box, that's about four-years old I imagine.
Since it's a lifetime box, it would be nice to save it. Any suggestions?

THR-22 - 2TB drive that actually works

Sun, 09/02/2012 - 08:47
OK, so I decided to update from my series 2 to the new THR-22 and after a couple of weeks of use realized that the 500GB drive would not cut it and I needed to upgrade it.

So I though I would use a video surveillance HD I had; the Seagate ST2000VX000.

This upgrade resulted in the pixelation people have reported and slow menu response too. (Even after a couple of weeks of use)

So then I tried the Seagate Pipeline HD (ST2000VM002), this had less of a problem but still did not work flawlessly like the original 500GB pipeline drive.

So I did a bit of research and decided to try the Hitachi Deskstar (H3D20006472S) as it was rated highly, used older, none-AF technology and used a 6Gb/s interface. (Although our Tivo's can only use the 3Gb/s mode, I knew the drive itself have to be fast to be able to feed the 6Gb interface)

This drive worked flawlessly from the moment I installed it. No waiting for it to settle down and menu response was fast too. The drive is a available for around $100.

I also ran some test on the drives and here are the results using tests by Spinrite:

Burst Transfer Rate
Hitachi H3D20006472S = 88,896,060
Seagate ST2000VX000 = 64,984,160
Seagate ST2000VM002 = 51,225,989

Sustained Transfer rate
Hitachi H3D20006472S = 124,624,287
Seagate ST2000VX000 = 117,498,617
Seagate ST2000VM002 = 109,157,670

Random Sector Access
Hitachi H3D20006472S = 12.263
Seagate ST2000VX000 = 9.189
Seagate ST2000VM002 = 13.703

I tried testing the original 500GB drive but for some reason Sprinrite would not recognize it. (I wonder if it is modified in some way?)

Shares Folder Disappears

Sun, 09/02/2012 - 06:56
I just installed Airport Extreme in place of my old Cisco router. I have a Tivo premiere elite. Everything worked fine, but now I'm noticing that the Shares folder disappears from the Now Playing List, requiring a reboot of PyTivoX program. Any suggestions on where to look for a fix?

TPXL Wireless N Adaptor

Sun, 09/02/2012 - 00:25
Every now and then the adaptor switches speeds from 5.0 down to 2.4.
I used to be able to reset it by either pulling the power cord for the adaptor, or cycling the WPS off/on at the router.
For the past few months, neither of these worked - though occasionally the adaptor would switch back to 5.0 on its own.
I haven't got the slightest idea of what to look for that may help lock the adaptor speed at 5.0....any thoughts on this?

The router is a NetGear WNDR4000 (N750) installed Aug. 2011, and the adaptor is Tivos own 'N' model.
The rest of the wireless system consists of
1 laptop
1 printer

Drive swap in S2

Sat, 09/01/2012 - 20:41
My zippered 6.2a DVR40 failed in that it would no longer display live television on either tuner. This was a gradual failure with the picture flashing on and off for several weeks. It would still display recorded programs, though. It's been offline now for over 2 months, but is still subscribed.

I've got an unsubbed HDVR2 and was hoping to swap the drive and card from the DVR40. After doing both, it's displaying on the screen "Data Corruption. Call Cust. Serv. X746." I've also got messages that mention errors 81 and 51.

I thought I could get away with swapping this out like this. Anyone have any pointers? I've already done the online reauthorization.

Thanks,
Dave

Can I get the straight scoop when it comes to M-Cards and Comcast, please?

Sat, 09/01/2012 - 19:46
I have a TivoHD and I can't seem to get the straight scoop with regard to my M-Card.

I have an M-Card, and lucky for me, it works.

However, they are charging me $1.50 a month for it. When I called them they told me that the Single Ch. card is free, but the MCard isn't.

Is that legal or right?

Thanks,
Pete
