Tivo app for iPhone....... can it be used away from my home network?

Sat, 02/09/2013 - 11:57
The Tivo app for iPhone can be used away from my home network.

However, when you are off of the home network, the app disables it the virtual remote control.

Is there any way possible to use the virtual remote when I am away from home?

One possibility that I thought of...... is there some way that my iPhone could VPN tunnel into my home network and "fool" the Tivo into thinking that my iPhone is actually on my home network so that it will allow me to use the virtual remote control?

FYI, my internet provider is Verizon fios.

If anyone can recommend a solution that will solve this problem then I will spend money to buy equipment or software, if neccesary.

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

Recommend me some science fiction

Sat, 02/09/2013 - 09:55
What's good lately? I used to watch SyFy back in the days of Farscape, BSG, Stargate, etcetera. Lately I can't find much to stir my interest. The mainstream networks are even worse. There's not even so much as a Star Trek series anymore.

Recently Deleted Folder

Sat, 02/09/2013 - 09:10
It would be useful to make the Recently Deleted folder use up program space in the order that the programs were deleted. Sometimes I watch a program that I have saved for several months. Then when I delete it, if I try to retrieve it within a few minutes, it is gone. Yet 60-70 programs that were deleted within the last few days are still there!! It appears that the deleted folder is reused based on the recorded date instead of on the deleted date. This is not exactly friendly to the Tivo user. Especially since the name of the folder is 'Recently Deleted'.

Program conflicts ....

Fri, 02/08/2013 - 21:42
My really crappy DVR from the cable company thing does one thing way better than the TIVO.

If I manually am setting up a program and there is a conflict, it allows me to pick which one of the three shows i want to not record.

Every software update I hope TIVO will add this feature. Any ideas why such an obvious thing isnt handled better on the TIVO ?

And I am not talking about the season pass priority, I simply mean you go to record a show and two shows are already scheduled.

Just venting.

BD Player With Instant Replay?

Fri, 02/08/2013 - 20:08
Last Black Friday I bought a bargain Sony BD player (BDP-S185). I hate it. I'm in the market for a new one.

One thing I'd really like is a control similar to TiVo's 8-second Instant Replay button to play the last bit over again. One press of one button -- elegant.

Trying to back up just a few seconds on a DVD or BD player has never been easy, but maybe I'm just not using the right brand/model.

Does anyone know of a BD player whose remote has the equivalent of TiVo's Instant Replay button?

I found a couple of threads on this forum about it and learned that some older Sony models had this but newer ones do not. One person noted that the mobile phone app for controlling Panasonic players had such a feature. This seems less than instant to me if you have to wake up the phone when the feature is needed.

Anyway, I'm looking for a BD player, current model, with the Instant Replay-like feature.

Different type of "reboot" problem!

Fri, 02/08/2013 - 18:25
I have upgraded my 3 THD's to 1TB drives and they have been fine for 3+ years now. The one in the bedroom had a noisy fan so I replaced it. Other than that it has 1 issue that bugs me.

I leave the tuners on different HD stations. Every few days they are both on the same station...like when you have a reboot. Sometimes I can hear the fan go into high speed, which I assume is a reboot.

However, here is the strange part, this NEVER happens when it is doing a scheduled record and never happens during playback. I get NO FREEZES! I record the news at night at 11PM, and tell it to save 1 show. That way we can watch whenever we get in the Bedroom, and it only has 1 nights worth of news that gets overwritten the next night. From the deleted list I guess it does delete and records new. RARELY, when I just go to live TV on that station it will reboot, but that has only happened a few times EVER during these 3+ years. I would suspect PS and/or HDD but this seems like it would effect shows I record, etc. This seems like it must be something else. I suppose I "could" pull the HDD and run diags, but wonder if anyone knows what else to look for. Is it possible that the >250 deleted shows could be causing it? It sure would be a pain to delete them 1 at a time!

Does THX make ANY difference?

Fri, 02/08/2013 - 17:59
I was thinking of getting 2 Premiere 4 Boxes with the 4 tuners and doing the upgrade to an XL4 myself. I would then save some money (but not much), and I would have the original 500GB drive(s) as backup if the 2TB drives fail. However, someone mentioned that the XL4's are THX and come with the glo remote.

I wonder, however, if THX buys you anything with the 5.1 audio that most cable stations are sending? It seems like my Series 3 THD's sound as good as they can send, and I have a BIG 5.1 system in our main room!

Audio sync problems with stream

Fri, 02/08/2013 - 17:57
Does anyone have problem with their Stream where it sometimes loses audio sync? It happens when I have wireless problems. I usually must move the slider to a new position and then back to the original position to put it back in sync.

S2DT lifetime .. sell w/ 80GB or upgrade to 1TB first?

Fri, 02/08/2013 - 16:44
So I have an S2DT (w/ lifetime) that needs a new HDD.

I *have* a spare 80GB drive from an old S2 "nightlite" model that I have since sold..

  1. use the spare 80GB drive to repair, and sell w/ 80GB.
  2. buy a new 1TB drive w/ pata adapter to repair, and sell w/ 1TB.

Weird thing is, it doesn't seem like eBay prices right now have ANYTHING to do with the size HDD .. A 1TB HDD will cost me around $100 right now.. So to make it worth my time and effort of course I'd need to mark up the resale cost more than that.. say $125 ish .. but given that it's only an S2DT, not an HD model, I'm not sure the market would bear the price hike. Given that current eBay sales are ranging between $150 and $275 largely regardless of HDD size, I'm wondering if it really matters?

I'd love to gather some replies about what I should do (and why)..

And in case anyone's interested, I can have it ready to ship in a couple days using my spare 80GB drive (just say the word)..

"Up all night" Christina Applegate quit

Fri, 02/08/2013 - 15:26
"It’s been a great experience working on Up All Night, but the show has taken a different creative direction and I decided it was best for me to move on to other endeavors. Working with Lorne Michaels has been a dream come true and I am grateful he brought me into his TV family. I will miss the cast, producers and crew, and wish them the best always."

NBC executives still won't give up the ghost, and are looking at other actresses like Lisa Kudrow to step in and play Reagan.

Tivo Requests FCC Waiver: New Devices!

Fri, 02/08/2013 - 12:55

In a nutshell, they want to remove analog for the next generation, top to bottom. Unlike how they specifically named the Elite for the waiver last time, this time they are not indicating exactly what the devices are, but rather requesting a waiver for "upcoming DVR models."

They are retaining the Premiere brand and will have one model with OTA.

No release timeline is given.

Some snippets....

"In 2011, the Commission granted TiVo a waiver of the digital cable ready certification ... to permit TiVo to bring all-digital cable-only DVRs to the retail market for the first time. This petition requests an extension of that waiver to several new all-digital cable only devices and a slight extension of that waiver to cover devices that permit reception of digital broadcast ("DTV") signals."

"TiVo ... has two years of consumer data showing that its audience no longer needs or wants analog tuning functionality in TiVo DVRs. Following the Commission's previous waiver, TiVo ... found that only 0.2% of customers commented about the absence of analog tuning capability and only 0.05% of customers ceased subscribing to TiVo service as a result. TiVo's technologically savvy customer base simply no longer has any use for analog television service and saddling them with the cost ($100 to $150 per device) of analog equipment they do not need and will never use serves no rational policy goal."

" TiVo Inc. ... hereby petitions the Media Bureau for waiver. ... The waiver would permit TiVo to manufacture and sell new models of its innovative digital video recorders ("DVRs") without including vestigial analog tuners that increase costs and power consumption without providing any useful functionality for consumers."

"The devices subject to the requested waivers are part of the next generation of TiVo's all-digital "Premiere" line, for which the Commission previously granted TiVo waivers..."

"One model of TiVo' s new all-digital DVRs would include ATSC over-the-air reception capability"

"... the costs of including now unnecessary analog functionality in TiVo DVRs have only increased. TiVo's base cost is approximately $10 for each analog tuner included in each device... When design and production costs are factored in, including this analog functionality increases the retail price of each device by between $100 and $150 depending on the model."

On demand for Charter

Fri, 02/08/2013 - 10:56
So, even though the Charter/Tivo deal has been scuttled, or postponed, or whatever, can the rest of us get the software that allowed access to charter OnDemand content? Is there any technical reason (i.e., hardware required on Charter's end) that would be impossible to implement for existing Premieres?

[Let's ignore Charter's pervasive institutional cluelessness about TiVo, for the moment. They sent me a tech last week who had never seen a Tuning Adapter and didn't know what SDV is.]

Am I stuck forever?

Fri, 02/08/2013 - 09:47
I have three Tivos (S3, HD, HD) all with LifeTime... been a subscriber since generation 1 Tivos. My problem is that I am on OLD hardware and would love to upgrade to current hardware and features... Tivo's problem is that they make no money from me at all. Will there every be a Tivo offer that allows me to get on the latest hardware and features, and helps Tivo generate some revenue form me, short of me spending $800 / unit to get an XL4 with lifetime, which would be crazy given the other low.no cost options out there today. This just seems like a no brainer for there to be some middle ground offer... likely or never?

New router Series 2 will not communicate

Fri, 02/08/2013 - 08:05
With a new Asus router (dual band), my Series 2 will not talk to the router - I get a communication error on the Tivo. Call to Asus was no help, they say to call Tivo. The router is downward compatible, and I know this because it is talking to every device in the house. Any ideas?

Week in Review: Liberty Global buys Virgin Media

Fri, 02/08/2013 - 07:09
Virgin Media accounts for over 1/3rd of TiVo's subscription base. I've received a number of questions on what Virgin Media's acquisition by Liberty Global means for TiVo's business. This article does a pretty good job of summarizing the near to medium term impact. Longer term we'll just have to wait and see if this is a good or bad thing for TiVo. Certainly, Virgin Media's departing CEO Neil Burkett was a strong TiVo Advocate.

Quote: The relationship between TiVo and Liberty Global is an interesting one. We know through the many conference appearances given by Liberty Global president Mike Fries in the run up to the launch of his own Horizon platform that TiVo had been considered before Horizon made its debut.
Both products are searching for the same end, to give ever so slightly more control to the consumer, while locking them in to an ever-increasing supply of content.

When Horizon was released we gained a list of 30 or so companies that had contributed to a greater or lesser extent. Virgin has also contributed its own skills to the development of TiVo and this has fed back into the pot with the experience no doubt being passed onto the likes of ONO and Com Hem as they get their own platforms up and running.

So it would seem logical at the very least there may be some pooling of resources and a roadmap, probably several years down the line, which brings Horizon and TiVo somewhere together. Virgin’s 1.33 million and growing TiVo installs make it somewhat impractical to consider anything else.

Tivo Mini available now with Suddenlink?

Fri, 02/08/2013 - 06:49

We used to have SL but not any more (due to move) - but I wouldn't ever RENT a Mini when I can buy one....still waiting.

But hey - at least now someone is Beta testing it for the rest of us! :-)

The article wrote - "dynamic tuner allocation is on the hardware's roadmap, it doesn't appear to be switched on just yet"

That's one of the things we really want too - oh well.

Does Welcome/Setup force a subscription?

Fri, 02/08/2013 - 06:03
I've got an unsubscribed Premiere TCD746320 that has gone back to the Welcome screen and wants to run the setup. (This happened because we moved and the provider/channel lineup changed.)

If we connect it online - Is it going to force us to subscribe in order to just use it as a set top tuner without the features - Recording/Guide/Etc?
