Burning Love Whole Season Thread

Wed, 03/06/2013 - 09:02
Has anyone caught this?

It's a Yahoo web series that's been ported to E! that stars Ken Marino in a "The Bachelor" parody.

It's funny as hell. Ken Marino is either one funny dude, or he's not not one funny dude - he's been around for a really long time, but I'm just now starting to appreciate him.

Season 2 is just starting online - but E! is only on Season 1, so that's what this thread would be about.

Tivo FIOS issues in NYC with Comedy Central

Wed, 03/06/2013 - 08:23
So i have a Tivo HD Xl and FIOS in NYC. All my channels work fine and I have never had any issues in many years. But recently my recordings on comedy central (ch 690 in NYC) have become unwatchable. Lots of pixellation. Then this week the Tivo can't even get a signal on channel 690 so all i get is black. of course every other channel works fine. i rebooted, power-cycled the tivo and still the same problem. I contacted FIOS and they tested the signal from their end and could not resolve the problem. They are sending a new cable card in the mail however. Anyone have any ideas why one channel won't work? FIOS said no one in my viewing area was complaining about ch 690....

Thanks in advance

Body of Proof 3-5-2013 (Spoilers abound)

Wed, 03/06/2013 - 07:11
Yes I know, next to nobody here watches this one but it's still on our small list of shows we somewhat enjoy, as cheesy as it may be.

Tonight's episode was a nice departure from the norm for sure.Just the right blend of wtf/creepiness.

Not sure how Megan(sp) can't be thinking that it was a real possession based on what the girl was saying to her. Especially the final scene. I just knew they were gonna through in that kind of twist but wasn't sure when it was going to come.

The bad thing about these kind of shows (well most really) is that this bizarre thing that just happened to her (main character) will most likely never be discussed ever again during the show, no matter how creepy that final encounter with the girl was. It will be like it never happened.

Oh well, no biggie.

So I'd give this ep a solid B just because it did stray nicely into the "supernatural" in this case.

TiVo HD hard drive replacement recommendations?

Wed, 03/06/2013 - 05:14
I'm looking to upgrade the hard drive on my tivo hd. I was hoping someone could recommend a good hard drive that is known to work well with the TiVo hd. I checked out the FAQ but it looks like it hasn't been updated for the TiVo hd in a while. I would probably look for either a 500gb or 1tb drive depending on the price difference.

Thanks for the help!

Verizon FiOS Network "Enhancements"

Wed, 03/06/2013 - 03:05
Did anyone else get this email?

Quote: To provide you the very best entertainment experience, Verizon continues to enhance our FiOS® network. We wanted you to be aware of an upcoming change that may impact how you view certain HD channels.

On or after April 15, 2013, we will be making a change to our network which may require that you exchange your current High Definition Set Top Box (STB)** if you want to access the HD channels impacted by this change (list provided below). The exchange is provided at no cost to you. If you choose to exchange your STB, it's a simple process. You can order a new STB directly from your FiOS® TV and we will promptly mail it to you, along with a box and pre-paid label so you can easily return your old STB.
You are not required to exchange your Set Top Box

If you want to view the impacted channels below on or after April 15, 2013, then you may be required to exchange your current Set Top Box at no cost to you

Set Top Box exchange is a simple process - your FiOS TV will guide you through the process in a few easy steps. On or after April 15, 2013, when you tune to one of the impacted channels below, your FiOS TV will recommend you exchange your Set Top Box and show you how to do so

Verizon will ship your new Set Top Box promptly, and include a box and pre-paid shipping label to return your old Set Top Box. We'll also include simple instructions for connecting your new Set Top Box

If you have multiple boxes that are impacted by this network change, your FiOS TV will prompt you to exchange all boxes that require a replacement, again at no cost to you

Here are the channels impacted by our network change on or after April 15, 2013:

You can then follow the onscreen prompts to determine if your HD STB(s) must be replaced and submit a STB exchange request.

We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to continuing to provide you with the very best entertainment over the FiOS network.

Your Verizon Team Any ideas what it means? Are they transitioning to MPEG-4 on these channels?

I assume this optimistic footnote means their cablecard is compatible, but that my TiVoHD is probably not.

Quote: ** CableCARDs provided by Verizon are compatible with the network enhancements being made and do not require an exchange. If you use a CableCARD and experience issues viewing any of the channels listed above, please click here for more information.

Is there any advantage to MOCA instead of wired Ethernet?

Tue, 03/05/2013 - 23:51
I currently have two Premier units hooked up via wired Ethernet into a gigabit switch. Would moving these devices to MOCA help me in any way?

Power Supply Ticking but no obviously blown caps

Tue, 03/05/2013 - 21:12
I have a Series 3 with the SPWR-00008-000 RevA3 power supply which I have removed and don't see any obviously blown or leaking caps. Was thinking of buying a working Series 3 on ebay and swapping the power supply rather than paying weaknees $99. I'm not comfortable enough with the solder skills to fix it myself but if I could diagnose the caps as the issue, I could probably order the ESR ones others have linked to and find someone to solder it in. The unit has lifetime service and I had actually sold it on ebay for $375 but it was returned to me with the power supply problem between when I shipped it and it was returned.

I don't *think* the buyer pulled a quick swap on me and I don't need the TiVo anymore since I use DirecTV but would like to get my value out of it so am looking for suggestions on how to fix/diagnose.

Need Advice on Replacing a Failing Drive without Losing Existing Data

Tue, 03/05/2013 - 19:12
I have read many posts about cloning drives, failed or otherwise, to try and preserve the data (aka recordings) on the existing drive. I don't want people to think I am starting a thread without reading existing advice, I have, but the problem I have is that for those who are new to the process involving TiVos (not technically novice, but TiVo novice) that the steps provided lack a certain degree of specificity that would allow for a more reliable and confident attempt.

What is my situation:
  1. I have a Series 2 DVR (Humax T2500)
  2. It has an upgraded drive (larger drive)
  3. The OS and all functions are fine, but the drive hits sectors which result in the system rebooting or stalling (suggests drive is dying)
  4. I have lots of recordings which I don't want to lose and want to carry over to the new drive (of the same size at the moment)

What do I need:
  1. What is the best drive to use as a replacement to reduce decay in the future
  2. Windows or Linux is not a problem, I can use both and I have the technical knowhow (25+ years) which allow me to use any setup without a problem - Linux seems to be preferred
  3. What application will most efficiently and without too much guess work or fuss make a copy of all the OS, data, settings and recordings to a new drive without killing both the source and/or new destination - have considered DD and MFS
  4. Any advice or specific steps would be appreciated, a sort of how-to or relative step-by-step if possible, would be greatly appreciated

I will gladly post my experiences, discoveries and suggestions after completing this to assist others and leave a more beginner friendly DIY in the future, so any help and details will not be a waste and can possibly serve as a manual for others in the future.

Thank you all in advance and I look forward to hearing from all you great people to help me accomplish this and learn something new in the process.

Cougar Town

Tue, 03/05/2013 - 16:45
Don't know if it is affecting anybody else, but my season pass is not picking up the the next two episodes because they have the wrong original airdate. I am running a directv hr24, so I don't know if this affects a TiVo.

I'm wondering if this will work over wireless...

Tue, 03/05/2013 - 16:05
I see this...

Quote: IMPORTANT! TiVo boxes using a wireless connection will not support the TiVo Mini. on the TiVo site...but does that mean the Mini itself cannot use a wireless ethernet bridge?

Premiere 4 XL for $269?

Tue, 03/05/2013 - 13:54
I was thinking of upgrading my Premiere to the XL4, and found this site selling for $269. It's Ultimate Home Theater (dot us). Unfortunately I can't post the direct link because I am a new user here.

Does anyone have any experience with this site, and is it legit?

Kinda lost - what's the diff Stream vs. Mini?

Tue, 03/05/2013 - 13:48
Both seem to stream recordings and live TV to another TV in the house. Somebody throw a book at me and explain the simple concept I'm missing.

Thank you.

Time vs Quality

Tue, 03/05/2013 - 11:45
New TiVo user trying to figure out the 'best' quality to record at with most recording time capacity. Any guidelines or recommendations on when to use Best, High, Medium or Basic? I've already chewed up 150 gb of my 500 gb in less than two weeks recording almost everything at Best. Used to constantly push the limit on my 120 gb Philips.

Bad cable connection affects only one QAM frequency?

Tue, 03/05/2013 - 09:51
TiVo HD with TA on TWC, Southwest Ohio. For several months now I've noticed that anytime an SDV channel gets assigned QAM modulator frequency 543 MHz, there will be severe video pixelation and audio distortion. The signal level is 40 to 45, occasionally going down to 0 and occasionally losing tune on the channel altogether. SNR is 28 dB and RS error counts climbing rapidly. This is the ONLY QAM frequency that has these deficiencies. All other frequencies have signal strengths of 80 to 100, SNR of 34+ dB, and no RS error counts. Even adjacent QAM channels such as 549 MHz.

Today I had my second service call for this problem. The tech was the same one who came for the first call and this time I was able to show him the numbers for 543 MHz in DVR diagnostics. He immediately concluded the problem was upstream from my equipment and went outside to do something.

Turns out the first thing he did was get into the tap box at the corner of our yard and tighten the connectors. And that immediately fixed the problem! (Although it may have introduced problems on other QAM channels -- only time will tell if the fix is complete.)

My question for those who may know is:
Can a poor cable connection cause severe attenuation just on ONE 6 MHz frequency band? It seems counter-intuitive to me but .... ???

Warranty and Lifetime Question

Tue, 03/05/2013 - 09:35
I want to purchase a Premiere 4 with Lifetime in the next day or days or whenever the Mini comes out.

If I purchase a Premiere 4 with Lifetime from a third-party seller, can I still purchase the 3-year extended warranty from tivo.com?

Is buying the unit directly from tivo.com liable to be the best deal I can get, assuming I can use code PLSR? I used PLSR a few years ago on a TiVo HD.

Very dark 'un-viewable' picture on S2 Tivo.

Tue, 03/05/2013 - 09:03
I have two S2 Tivos (+one temporarily disconnected). I have Cablevision SD cable boxes.

The 'problem' Tivo is a S2 DT model TCD649080.
The other is a S2 Humax T800.

Problem: DT Tivo 649 - any content recorded after 2/24/13 (approx) AND any channels watched 'live' are so dark it is unusable. Basically, you can see figures moving but no real images. I have tried every combination of brightness, contrast, etc. I can think of with no noticeable change. This was all work fine in the beginning of Feb and has for the past 4-5+ years.

Content recorded earlier in February 2013 looks fine. AND - if I transfer a program from the Humax T800 to the DT 649, it plays fine. Content I move from DT 649 to Humax T800 is as dark and unusable as it is in the DT Tivo.

I have verified that bypassing the Tivo 649 and going straight from the cable box to the TV works fine.

My thinking is that there is a problem with the component(s) in Tivo 649 that capture(s) the video from the cable source. I have tried all possible alternative Tivo outputs: Svideo, composite, RF and multiple TV inputs to eliminate the obvious. I have restarted and re-powered the Tivo a few times.

My questions for the forum:
  1. What might I have overlooked?
  2. Anyone seen this before? Suggested fix?
  3. Does it make sense to try to repair? $ vs. remaining life?
  4. If I decide to try to have it repaired, do I do that with Tivo directly? Other repair options?

Other info:
My dissatisfaction with Cablevision's services cannot be described with civil discourse. For example, they randomly apply changes to the STB and restart it. It does not remember the previously set volume setting, so it defaults to 17/30. When you watch a program that recorded before you found out you have to raise the STB volume, you have to BLAST the sounds around the program. Poor cable products and service along with the lack of MRV on S3 & HD Tivos has left me reluctant to upgrade. If I change to FIOS, their DVR option (includes MRV) + economics probably does not end with a new Tivo. :(

Appreciate any suggestions...
