Beware of Misbehaving non-TiVo Remote Controls

Sat, 06/02/2012 - 13:52
My Series 2 started acting real flaky, not responding, then responding too much, to the remote control. Could not control the unit. Changed batteries - ng. Used remote from different unit - ng. Called tech support. Went through the whole "shine a flashlight for 30 seconds on the IR receiver" to reset it thing - ng. Diagnosis - bad unit and unit needed to be replaced. Tried to sell me one right then and there - no dice, just did not accept that out of the blue the unit was completely cooked.

Went to weaknees.com and did some research. Guidance was to locate ALL other remotes in the room and take batteries out. And guess what - the stereo remote was sending some signal "confusing" the IR receptor on the TiVo. Removed batteries from stereo remote - perfect, no issues, back to normal. No bad unit, no bad IR, no bad remote - just bad tech advice.

This very simple advice - look for other remote controls - should be part of checklist items for Tivo tech support. Very simple to do. Spoke to supervisor, specifically asked that the protocol be changed to include the advice to check all other remotes before trying to sell customers new units. Promised to do so, and to email me with confirmation that it was done. Guess what-still waiting for email. Weaknees provided other examples of IR interference (I recall mirrors being one of them).

So I avoided dropping $160 or so on a new unit that probably would not have worked anyway due to interference from the stereo remote control giving out bad signals. Bottom line: TiVo made a serious mistake on this, I wonder how often this happens, and no indication that its tech folks have bee undated on the checklist protocol that was promised to be revised. Very Disappointed.

Comcast now requiring equipment for ALL TV services

Sat, 06/02/2012 - 12:35
I JUST got an Xfinity/Comcast notice stating that as of June 26th for my area (Atlanta), Some sort of Comcast equipment will be needed for ALL television programming through them. Either a cable card, DTA or digital box will be needed. Even for the local basic package (ch2-30). Therefore, no more being able to at least get some local stuff with just a straight coaxial connection.

I was gonna use an older lifetime Series3 (w/ no cable cards & strait coax) to just record some local HD channels. Then MRV the shows to 2 different Premieres. Looks like that basic plan now won't be possible.

With this recent announcement & the outlandish cable card charges Comcast is pulling on customers, they are REALLY making it harder for me to stay with them. AT&T U-verse is finally available for my location. I've not looked into them cause TiVos don't work with U-verse (& I have two lifetime TiVos), but I may still have to seriously look into them. Then maybe sell my lifetime TiVos on ebay. That or maybe just go to a straight OTA antenna & Netflix with my TiVos.

While this doesn't really pertain to me right now, I just realize too that this move is really gonna screw over a lot of people who are on a budget, don't have a DVR of any kind & just want local HD channels on their HDTV. Now, it will require they either get an HD digital box from Comcast (about $15-20/month) or go to an OTA setup to watch even any kind of local HD programming.

Verizon penalizing TiVo / CableCard subscribers

Sat, 06/02/2012 - 10:27
Verizon is currently offering a multi-room dvr free for life as part of its 2YR TV, Internet, and Phone package (Triple Play). The free set-top box amounts to a savings of $19.99 per month. If one chooses a cable card, instead of the multi-room dvr, there is a cost of $3.99 a month. This amounts to a $23.98 penalty for selecting a cable card for this package.

This is a violation of FCC CableCard rule:

"Pay only for equipment you have. Your operator must give you a discount on any packages that include the price of a set-top box if you choose to use your own CableCARD-enabled device. FCC Rule 76.1205(b)(5)."

http://www.fcc.gov/guides/cablecard-know-your-rights

Verizon is appeasing CableCard users by automatically giving the alternative promotion, a $250 gift card. However, CableCard subscribers should have a choice between the discount or the gift card. The discount is obviously the wiser choice, as it is a long-term savings and surpasses the value of the gift card in the 11th month of the 24 month term (250/23.98=10.4).

If you have this package, you are considering it, or just don't think Verizon is playing fair with TiVo, file a complaint with the FCC at: https://esupport.fcc.gov/ccmsforms/f...orm_type=2000E

Series2 suddenly not working?

Sat, 06/02/2012 - 08:59
Hi folks,

I am hoping someone can help me out or at least point me in the right direction - I would definitely appreciate it!

I have a Series2 DT Tivo with Comcast cable and a cable box. I've had this setup for over a year, everything working well. A few days ago a number of the channels weren't working... so I decided to go through the whole Guided Setup process again. I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that my cable provider sent some of the channels in digital but a few were still analog (i.e., the "basic cable" channels - 2, 4, 7, etc.). So I had the splitter connected, etc... and again all was working.

Well, after repeating the Guided Setup a number of times I couldn't get things working. What's weird is that, even though I told the Tivo setup process that I DO have a cable box, it then summarizes the info later on and tells me I selected "no cable box". When I clearly didn't. BTW I tried bypassing Tivo and was able to get it working fine.

So then I called Tivo...and they said that for my zip code their info shows the cable is all digital. So that I should remove the splitter from the configuration and go through Guided Setup again, selecting the option to disable the dual tuner on the Tivo. So I did that, and rewired everything according to a single tuner setup.... following the directions here: hxxp://support.tivo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/97

At this point I repeated Guided Setup again....but no dice. :/ No picture at all. Really not sure what the problem is and could definitely use any pointers! I am far from an expert on this stuff, but not clueless either. Perhaps someone can confirm the connection configuration for me as well? As it's possible I have something miscabled... Note I have a VCR as well as a DVD recorder in the mix here too.. Composite connections, and RF coax (no component connections, no HD, no S-video, etc..).

Thank you much for any assistance you can offer!

Regards,

- Dave

Question about copy protection

Sat, 06/02/2012 - 07:57
I've never owned a tivo but am considering it can do one important thing for me - copy programming from HBO to my PC. I have Verizon FiOS and able to go into the diagnostic menu to check and see what channels are protected and HBO is one of them. What I want to know if this is a sure sign that it will also be copy protected if I'm using a cablecard?

Yet another 6.2a to 6.4 horror story

Sat, 06/02/2012 - 02:30
OK, so I gave in and updated my old zippered 6.2 Dtivo boxes to 6.4. Boy was that a mistake...

First I did it on one box, Got it to work, boots 6.4a but man, the box is so slooooooow. I do not mean regular Tivo slow, I mean unusable. So slow, it is not even capable of reliably sync up with the satellite. OK, after wasting a day trying to figure out what is wrong, I chucked it up to being a hardware issue - either drive dying or something else. So I stupidly updated the second one. That one turned out to be even worse. Also just as slow. But as a bonus, after a few reboots it is now stuck in a reboot loop, booting slowly into satellite dish type selection screen (???) with black background (???) and immediately rebooting. Telnet is not on long enough to get any debugging done, but before it died I noticed the load was steadily growing from 4 to about 10 (after which I lost ability to check)

I am so fed up with DirecTV and tivo at this point, I seriously question if this is worth the time and effort anymore...

Creating Auto-Transfers

Sat, 06/02/2012 - 02:30
I am using TiVo Desktop 2.8 and have a Series2 and Series3. I am using eSet Smart Security 5.2.91 again (there was an issue with 5.0.95 and not detecting spam, so I had to try to find another program)

I noticed that after installing VIPRE my Auto Tranfers stopped working. So I was going back and forth comparing to what was on my server and the TiVos.

Is there an easier way? If so, please be so kind to share - heck, this is one of the greatest forums out there.

"The Wire" - Premiered 10 years ago

Sat, 06/02/2012 - 00:00
http://www.theatlantic.com/entertain...-thing/257910/

Quote: The Wire's first episode aired on June 2, 2002, 10 years ago this week. A decade has now passed since HBO took a chance on showrunner David Simon's grim vision of a decaying, desperate Baltimore and nearly half a decade since the iconic series ended and was enshrined as the Greatest TV Show Ever, taught at Harvard and Duke. Great, great television.

Just bought a used premiere with lifetime

Fri, 06/01/2012 - 21:51
I can't find a recent info on this so I figured I had better ask. Do I need to contact TiVo to reregister the TIVO under my name? By phone? This is my first TiVo so I don't have an account.

Does anyone support the THR22?

Fri, 06/01/2012 - 21:05
Firmware version 0192 is now out for test and still no idea when we can expect an update and what is in the update.

Ask DirecTV about the THR22 and they say TiVo has control of updates (and features - I don't buy that) and it's up to them. Also that TiVo has applied minimum man power to the THR22 to meet the agreement.

Talk to TiVo and they say ask DirecTV. Some articles and a bit of logic would make one assume the THR22 is very controlled by DTV. Why would DTV let TiVo compete fairly?

Anyway, does ANYONE know what the heck is going on with the THR22? Very frustrated.

Problem Dowloading New SW 20.21

Fri, 06/01/2012 - 20:42
I have a TIVO Premier. Because I live outside the city I do not have access to unlimited broadband. I have to use the phone adapter. The TIVO has been unable to download the new software 20.21 because the phone modem keeps timing out. I have tried "forcing" the unit to connect to TIVO and get the dowload in spurts. The problem is the modem will time out and the unit restarts. That means I have to go back and start the download from the beginning. Any ideas as to what I can do to correct this problem. My guide info will run out at 6pm cdt on Tue. Without the new software the guide will not load. Thanks for any help.

Help Please - HD Tivo Just Got Slow as Molasses

Fri, 06/01/2012 - 20:36
Yesterday morning while my kids were eating cereal and watching Dora on Tivo, my HD Tivo went through an unexpected reboot. Not sure why.

Afterwards everything slowed way, way down. I hit the Tivo button, and it takes 30 seconds or more for it to register and pull up the menu screen. Every button I push on the Tivo remote takes up to a coupld minutes to get a response out of Tivo.

Pulling up the Guide takes close to 10 minutes as each line of infomation slowly appears one by one in 10-20 second intervals. If I take the 5 min's it takes to navigate to a recorded show, then there's no problem watching it. It's only when I'm asking Tivo to process a request that it's as slow as molasses. It's almost as though it's processor has slowed way down.

I've had the box for 3+ years and never had a problem. I forced a reboot and afterwards it starts out working OK for a few minutes, but then it begins to slow down again. It's virtually unusable at this point.

I was thinking that maybe it was a software update that backfired, but since I don't see anyone else complaining about this same issue I'm assuming it's not a software update prob.

Any suggestions for what might be causing this problem and how to fix it would be appreciated.
Thank you!

Getting 2TB drive for a Series 3 that is on FiOS(order for inserting CC)

Fri, 06/01/2012 - 20:03
My Mom's Series 3 (OLED) TiVO 750GIg hard drive is failing. Just ordered a new 2TB drive from DVR_DUDE on Ebay. I know that I should do guided setup without a cable cards in. But after guided setup should I put both cards in with it unpluged and boot it up. Or should I reboot with the cards out and put one in at a time. I know that FiOS doesn't pair their cards but I need to know what order to follow.

Thank you for any help.

Did Jonathan Coulton inspire the writers of Eureka?

Fri, 06/01/2012 - 19:19
Clicking through the video that Ereth posted for Jonathan Coulton's song 'Redneck', I found Coulton on stage with Felicia Day singing "Still Alive", which as if you didn't know was the song played at the end of Portal.

Slingbox Remote Issue

Fri, 06/01/2012 - 18:51
I've just setup my Slingbox Solo after having it sit awhile. While using the iPad app I'm having trouble accessing my recorded programs. The TiVo button on the virtual remote isn't functioning. It looks like it may be grayed out.

Has anyone had a similar issue? Is there a simple fix? The channel and info buttons are working fine.

Does Tivo tries to get you back after cancelling a contract-fulfilled box?

Fri, 06/01/2012 - 17:52
Do you get emails or phone calls from Tivo wanting you to re-activate the service with special promo offers? If so, what kind of offer(s)?

1 THR-22 + 2 D* DVRs?

Fri, 06/01/2012 - 16:12
Hi everyone,

Does anybody have the setup of one THR-22 and two (or more) DirecTV DVRs in one house? I really would like to replace all three receivers with THR-22, but D* isn't budging -- well, unless I want to pay $600. Not to sound cheap, but I find it horrifying to have to pay $200 for even just one leased unit. I haven't talked to retention yet; but the various CSRs I have spoken with have at least offered the 1 Tivo + 2 D* DVRs at a much lower price. So I am just wondering if anyone has taken that offer and what is the overall viewing/user experience like?

(I have lost my local channels on my Series 1 DTivo, and with no easy solutions in sight, and I've wanted to upgrade to HD anyway, this seems like the logical step. But again, the upfront cost is just way too prohibitive...)

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

TiVo Premiere Benchmarking

Fri, 06/01/2012 - 16:05
This thread is a breakout from my Performance thread that was more of a discussion thread than a details thread which is what this one will focus on. This thread will cover a variety of different benchmarks run on my TiVo Premiere to try to glean performance enhancements or regressions.

My testing process includes running each test a minimum of 3 times excluding outliers that are obvious flukes. The times are averaged together then compared against other runs.

Completed Benchmarks
  • TiVo 14.8c vs 14.9.2.2 benchmarks

Upcoming Benchmarks
  • TiVo 14.9.2.2 vs 20.2.1.1 benchmarks
  • TiVo 20.2.1.1 DNS benchmarks

Tivo HD w/ Lifetime Service and Extended Warranty $350 shipped

Fri, 06/01/2012 - 14:20
Has product lifetime service which means no monthly fees. It is model TCD652160 with a 160 GB drive. Holds about 20 hours HD or 180 hours SD programming.

This has an extended warranty from Tivo that is good through 6/20/2013 and is transferable to the buyer. It does have a problem. Sometimes the fan becomes very noisy. When it happens, I turn it off, then on (may take a few tries) and then it runs fine for months. I could get it replaced under the warranty, but since it has been a minor inconvenience, I thought that I would get as much life out of it as I could before getting it replaced. I think that the replacement will be eligible for another extended warranty ($40 for 3 years). I'm not 100% sure, but that is how I got the extended warranty on this one. I had a Tivo that failed during the warranty period and this one was the replacement and it was eligible for an extended warranty.

Includes original remote that is in great shape because I use a universal remote.

$350 including shipping to lower 48 states.
