Can I remove my Hard Drive and put it in another unit?

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 19:12
I keep going back and forth from state to state. I was wondering if I could put 2 tivo boxes and leave them in the 2 states and just remove the hard drive and just travel with that? I am getting tired of the TSA stuff now

Tivos don't see each other

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 19:07
Is is so frustrating. I have the following:

TiVo premiere XML
TiVo HD
TiVo series 2
Server running TiVo desktop

The premiere Xl can only see the HD
The HD can only see the series 2 and the server
The series 2 can see the HD and the server

All have been rebooted several times.

What the hell is going on?

Displaying the transfer speed in TiVo desktop

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 18:58
Two questions: 1) is there a way to display the transfer speed in TiVo Desktop (transfer between TiVo Series 3 and Computer). Kmttg offers this function. 2) is the transfer speed faster between TiVo and computer using the premiere series than series 3? I know transfers are limited by the connection speed. I am using WD livewire which offers speeds of over 100 Mbits/sec. Thanks

TiVo and my new Boston Sound system help needed!

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 18:57
I picked up a sound bar from Woot last week. A Boston acoustics, TVee model 25 soundbar and subwoofer. I have had problems with the sound in my tv for the last year...not sure if it was my hearing or the tv.

Anyway, my friend hooked it up as the manual said, and audio went into the TiVo and sound plays through it. Unfortunately, the TiVo remote does not control the volume for the sound bar. I am not sure what I need to do to get the soundbar and the TiVo remote talking to each other. The instruction manual had some directions and I followed those but no good. No remote came with the system.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I didn't know if I needed to change input or reconfigure something within the TiVo system to make it recognize the new sound system.

Old YouTube interface is back!

I thought this deserved its own thread. Hope this is here to stay. I just noticed it tonight. My iPad now works! (No space bar or backspace issues.)

Thank you TiVo.

Premiere 4 or XL4

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 18:39
I have decided, after fighting with Comcast and refusing to pay them 1 penny more, to dump my Humax and my HD and buy a Premiere.

The only question is the 4 or the 4XL.

I already have an external 1TB HD to hang off the P4.

So the question I think becomes 1 large HD in the XL or 2 drives with the 4.

Other than THX, is there any benefit to one over the other?

Thanks.

At least one led is almost always on

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 18:14

and many times, both reds are on even when not recording.

Anyone have an explanation ?

Thanks

Sony SVR-3000 Connection Problems

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 17:40
Good Day All,
I am new to this forum and hope i can get some assistance with a Sony SVR-3000. When i fired up this unit all worked well, with playback etc. but when i tried to connect via the dialup connection, the status screen showed "Connecting .. Negotating" and then failed. Thinking this may be a modem problem, I connected a USR modem via the serial connection and had the same result. I turned on the modem sound, changed the connection speed as low as 300 baud, but again still have the same result. (dial prefix ,#319)
Any assistance would be greatly apprechated.

Ms Divine's Tee Hee Heure - Comedy Public TV Show

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 15:16
Before Tivo, I used to watch this comedy show, on local access TV. I like the fact that I can watch Ms. Divine's Show via TIVO as well even if I don't have cable.
It's a funny show, where she plays a bunch of different characters in these little films. She also does some improvisations as well. It's a weekly show and there is so much fun stuff to watch.
Her youtube link that I use is : youtube.com/msdivine
It comes great on my TIVO!
Her site is msdivine.net

There are other shows I am also discovering that used to be on public TV as well.

Does resetting Cox TAs prevent black screen of death?

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 14:12
As many of you know, Cox tuning adapters have a distressing habit of periodically losing all channels, presenting the TiVo with a black screen. The TA does not notify the TiVo of this problem over its USB connection, causing a total loss of scheduled recordings in many cases. The approximately monthly period of this phenomenon strongly suggests a reauthorization problem, but I'm not sure what's actually happening. In any case, the only solution is to power-cycle the TA and wait the 20 minutes or so it takes to reauthorize itself. I was wondering if anybody had tried doing preemptive power-cycle resets to combat this problem, and whether that was successful.

Computer output into Tivo?

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 14:11
On my Tivo Premier, is there any way to INPUT video/audio from my computer? E.g. On my computer, I can watch PBS TV programs from out-of-state locations (so they're not on my local cable channels). Is there any way to connect that computer video to my Tivo?

Comcast really does stink!

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 11:41
I was ready to pull the trigger of buying a Premier XL4 but decided to call Tivo to see what kind of deals I could get.

I currently own a Tivo HD and an older Tivo Humax with the DVD burner.

Tivo offerred me a $99 lifetime on the HD. And even suggested I sell my Lifetime Humax. When I questioned my need then for another cable card, they said its only $1.50 per month per Comcast.

Well I know better so called Comcast. Its only $1.50 if cable card in same device. For a second device its over $10/mo.

I hate Comcast and only wish I had an alternative.

Cloning Failing drive (ddrescue)

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 10:49
A quick rundown of what I've dealt with so far.

-Have a Tivo HD (series 3)
-external WD WD10EVVS (1 TB) that is dying
-attempted to use ddrescue to recover

I was new to the whole ddrescue process. I used a Ubuntu bootCD and the instructions I found never said anything about needing to set my logfile location to elsewhere or else have it be deleted when the PC rebooted and it being stored in the RAM was lost.

When I ran ddrescue the first time, it copied 330 GB and the program crashed. I ran it a second time and was able to copy 600 GB, the hard drive locked up and ddrescue reported that the copy was 'Finished' which is not true (I wouldn't think) because my drive was nearly full. The drive was failing HARD towards the end of that copy.

Anyways, not thinking, I tried to restart the copy again and the drive died after about 8 GB. After a few more attempts, I just walked away from it and let it set for a few weeks.

I began trying again yesterday and didn't get very far. This time I was using the logfile and putting it onto a USB drive. Well, at some point the drive said it was 'Complete' again after about an hour of copying the drive, which is false, and shut Ubuntu off.

So, I rebooted this morning and attempted to resume. I did not check the /dev/ order of my drives, not thinking and the program had made the USB drive /sda. So basically, I copied an empty USB to my source drive.

I'm thinking I've lost the data on the source drive now.

But what I'm wondering is if I can use the data on the new drive that I had copied 330 GB and 600 GB to (as well as many other attempts). Does anyone know if ddrescue only copied 8 GB on drive B, did it overwrite the 600 GB previously copied? Is there anyway I can 'restore' any of that 600 GB that was written to drive B? That would be at least 60% of my recordings and at this point, I would take it since I believe I've borked my source drive.

I'm at a point where I'm starting to fear I'm going to have to get a 2 TB internal drive and clone my internal drive and basically start over with losing all my recordings. I DON'T REALLY WANT TO DO THAT. But I've been paying for Tivo service for 3 months of a dead box sitting on my entertainment center.

Any help would be appreciated.

TiVo, Comcast, Recording Questions

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 10:49
We just switched from DirecTV to Comcast about a month ago... and I'm finding that the DVR box is really not very good. There's only like 160g of Memory so can only record 17 hours of shows. And it can only record 2 shows at once. There's no skip-ahead on the remote either, which is annoying. So we are looking into a TiVo box. We are in Salt Lake City, UT, if that makes a difference.

My questions are...
1 Do we have to keep a Comcast DVR in addition to the TiVo box? Or just get a Comcast cable card? We've read both versions. Not really worth it if we have to have both.

2 If we get the TiVo that can record 4 shows at once, would we be able to, even if the Comcast DVR only can record 2? Is that a box limitation or a Comcast limitation? I'd love to be able to record 4 at once.

3 Can we hook up more than one TV to the TiVo? My husband isn't really as bit a TV watcher as me, so he'd just watch my recorded shows... or get the cable channels. Or would we need two TiVos?

4 I've read we couldn't get On Demand with TiVo... not really a biggie, I didn't have it with DirecTV or when I was on Dish years ago, so not a big loss. Having streaming through Netflix etc on the TiVo might be nice.

5 is the TiVo interface lots nicer than the Comcast DVRs? The Comcast DVR interface is, imho, rather sucky. At least compared to how DirecTV was. :)

Thanks!

kinda shocked not a bigger following :) oh wait, you can just watch the 1st season then replay it and it's the same thing year after year.

i just finished the season..alex is def a fav but the poor guy looks like he's gonna fall over.

the polar bear..well..him and his side kick can be off the road forever even if they dont find a new home...though i did like how they told off the owner of the company..something tells me there's a lot more of it behind the scenes though...getting 15% of what profits was the deal i wonder..the entire company? i cant believe it would be that.

gotta love the new kid...he actually did go out of his way to help a lotta people..something a pro would do and probaly did do..but i cant picture rick doing as much as the kid did. ..nor hugh

i dont know if they are doing south america or whatever with lisa again but that was much more interesting than the ice and i believe MORE dangerous than the ice

Loud Grinding Noise At Startup ?

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 09:50
Hello All...

Been a long time reader of these forums, but never had any issues with my boxes till now.

This morning I noticed my Premier that we purchased last November was very loud. I proceed to unplug and plug back in to see if that would correct the issue. However when I plugged back in, there was a terrible loud grinding noise. My best guess is that the hard drive is starting to fail.

Im sure others have had this happen, just looking for a confirmation.

Also, since i'm still in the one year warranty period, how does Tivo handle the warranty claims? Do i need to mail it back or will they just ship me a new hard drive for self install ?

Thanks,
Derek

Survivor - 9/26/12

Hmmm, seems as if the new season isn't grabbing much attention here. I can see why. It takes time to get to know everyone but so far this season is boring as hell.

Is the Wii U a Tivo Mini without Live TV?

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 08:13
I happened on this article on the new Wii U from Nintendo and specifically the section on Nintendo TVii which allows the new console to stream content from your Tivo as well as Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.

I didn't see anything around here about it. Did I miss something? And, will this force Sony and Microsoft to accomodate Tivo streaming as well? If so, I could see having one 6 tuner Tivo, Tivo minis where you need live TV (or a vanilla cable box) and a game console.

Interesting stuff.
