ebay shipping options for a TiVo?

Tue, 11/06/2012 - 08:06
I'm looking to probably sell a TiVo Series 2 DT (w/ lifetime) on ebay. I remember reading a post a while back about someone who sold one, but after it was shipped, it was DOA & the hard drive was damaged.

Therefore, I plan to ship mine insured. I have a FedEX account, but who is the best for shipping a TiVO and protecting it against possible damage AND making an insurance claim if needed; FedEX, UPS or USPS? Just curious.

"Shiny"

This was an awesome episode and they must have had a lot of fun making it!

Three minutes in, already 4 Firefly references and many other nods to sci-fi shows.

Cox San Diego change to H.264/MPEG-4

Mon, 11/05/2012 - 18:54
Last week I note that I could not receive all of premium channels (in my plus package) on my TiVo HD and could not resolve it over the phone, so they sent a Cox guy out. I had to work, so my brother was there when the Cox guy came and found out that Cox move all premium channels to H.264/MPEG-4 including the SyFy channel. :p The TiVo HD will slowly become a doorstop as Cox move other channels in 2013. While talking with the Cox guy my brother found out that Cox in San Diego is planning to replace all the DVR's with 6-tuner DVR's with a one-TB hard drive in 2013. Did not who would be building the DVR's or what software would be use. If this turn out to be true there no point in replacing the TiVo.

Anybody still watching? I have to admit I still love this show.

Loved this past week's show where they were drilling on the wrong claim.

Moving to a new cable provider in FL

Mon, 11/05/2012 - 14:49
Is there anything I can do to make the process faster/easier?

We're using a Premiere Lifetime with M-Card cable card - but going to another state - another provider - another cablecard and channel setup. The new provider will be BrightHouse in Florida - we've had them before in California.

There's a chance we may go to a Premiere 4 Lifetime in between as well - but I'll have both boxes for a while so the season passes can transfer over and the 2 channel Premiere with Lifetime can get sold.

Streaming election results

Mon, 11/05/2012 - 14:25
Since I don't have power and not sure if I will have it back in time for tomorrow night's election results, does anyone know if any of the major news orgs stream their election coverage? I do have an iPad with a 3G connection and my Android phone has a 4G connection (and this would be better since I still have an unlimited plan).

Deals, Promos, Specials, Coupons, Bargains discussion

Mon, 11/05/2012 - 13:49
For those shopping new boxes - please share any discounts you might have received and how it was done!

We currently have a Premiere Lifetime and would like to soon go to a Premiere 4 Lifetime.

The only "deal" I get is $100 off Lifetime (online existing customer discount)
Premiere 4 - $250
Lifetime - $400 (regular $500)
Total $650

Not a great deal - we'll wait for now until something better comes along.
I've already added 2 more channels of HD recording using EyeTV anyway... and it was very inexpensive!

Xfinity and Premier 4

Mon, 11/05/2012 - 12:42
I haven't used a Tivo in almost 4 years because Comcast/Xfinity wasn't supporting them with OnDemand. But it looks like now they're supporting the new boxes with full OnDemand access. I have a couple of questions that maybe someone can answer?

1. Based on a recent post, it looks like it still requires a CableCard to work. Is this true, or is the hardware such that it's compatible right out of the box?

2. Assuming you need a CableCard, do you need just one, or do you need 4? I know on previous HD Tivos you needed a separate card for each tuner (i.e. if you wanted to be able to record 4 shows at once, you needed 4 separate cards).

3. Quality and support for CableCard applications used to be horrible. I remember stories of people needing to switch out the cards multiple times before they found one that worked. How long has the Xfinity/Tivo service been available? Are the Comcast service techs going to be able to support it? I can't handle needing to make 20 calls to Comcast before I get it working as advertised.

4. Is there a separate fee paid to Comcast for the rental of the CableCard. As it stands now, the economics are pretty compelling to go with a Tivo box. Comcast charges $16/month for their HD DVR service. If I can buy a Tivo box, pay them $15/month and not pay some additional fee to Comcast, it's a no-brainer. I can "amortize" the cost of the Tivo box very quickly given how much better the service is than Comcast's DVR software.

5. Any other opinions on this topic would be welcome.

Thanks.

Premier to HD strange audio problem

Mon, 11/05/2012 - 12:09
Currently have one Premier Elite (XL4) and two HDs. Due to inability to stream between anything other than series 4 to series 4, have to use "transfer" (or copy). While this has been kind of clunky and slow, it has worked up until now for the most part.

Have now experienced a new issue. Recorded episodes of "Chicago Fire" on Elite. For pilot issue, transfered (copied) pilot to one of my HDs and viewed it there. No issues. Ever since the pilot issue, when I transfer an episode of that show to the HD, I can watch it. However, there is a running dialogue from a female voice in the background describing what is going on in the show. Kind of like a "narration".

If I directly record the episode on the HD, that background narration is not there.

I've contacted Tivo support, and they have absolutely no information. They said they "currently have no resolution" and I do not expect to hear back from Tivo concerning this defect.

I have rebooted both of the Tivos. I do not yet know if any other shows are effected. Tivo connected to TV via HDMI.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this?

Finally Replaced R10 with HD Version

Mon, 11/05/2012 - 10:10
I have had an R10 for a long time and was very happy with it. I have hearing problems and thought maybe an HD DirecTV TiVo with a sound system would help. The R10 was not showing any signs of failure so we were waiting for something to fail before going to HD. I have Vascular Dementia, which is not like Alzhiemer's. I have difficulty learning new things due to short term memory problems, but once learned, I remember them just fine. So I didn't want to re-learn the DirecTV HD box interface and stuck with the familiar-to-me DirecTV HD TiVo. I have not gotten the new big TV and sound system installed yet so I don't know if I will be able to differentiate the dialog from the music or crowd sounds better yet.

My actual question is about the phone line. I have a FiOS digital phone line and Internet. I did not switch to FiOS TV because I'd have to learn a new interface and I like DirecTV. The R10 would not successfully make a call on the FiOS phone line. I am having trouble with the new THR22 also. Does the Internet connection (which seems to work, it downloaded new software successfully the first time I tried it) take the place of the phone line requirement?

I also have problems staying on topic while speaking or typing so please excuse the rambling nature of some of this thread.

Synopsis: Does the THR22's use of the wired Internet connection make up for not being able to phone in?

Thanks,
Mike D. in Leesburg, Va

Arrow "An Innocent Man" 10/31/2012

Mon, 11/05/2012 - 09:20
I have to admit that Green Arrow's type of vigilante justice is a bit disturbing. He was channeling his inner Snidely Whiplash when he chained the guy to the railroad tracks. He also impaled the bad guys hand with an arrow.

The cop figured out his secret identity already? That was fast.

Are there reasons why he isn't referred to as Green Arrow on the show yet?

So I guess that stepdad finding the salvaged yacht means that Oliver's mom knew where Oliver was for at least some of the five years he was missing.

The Lands of Ice and Fire (A Game of Thrones)

Mon, 11/05/2012 - 08:42
This sounds like a very cool book...can't wait to get my hands on it! An official atlas of the Game of Thrones world.

http://www.randomhouse.com/book/2213...orge-rr-martin

Quote: George R. R. Martin’s beloved Song of Ice and Fire series, which started with A Game of Thrones, is bursting with a variety and richness of landscapes—from bitter tundra to arid wasteland and everything in between—that provide a sense of scale unrivaled in contemporary fantasy. Now this dazzling set of maps, featuring original artwork from illustrator and cartographer Jonathan Roberts, transforms Martin’s epic saga into a world as fully realized as the one around us.

The centerpiece of this gorgeous collection is guaranteed to be a must-have for any fan: the complete map of the known world, joining the lands of the Seven Kingdoms and the lands across the Narrow Sea for the first time in series history. But this is just one of many unique maps that aren’t available anywhere else. There is an alternate version that tracks the movements of the series’ protagonists throughout their vast world, along with more detailed versions of the western, middle, and eastern thirds of the world; a full map of Westeros, combining North and South; one of the Dothraki Sea and the Red Wastes; and the Braavos city map. And here, too, are fan favorites detailing everything from urban sprawl to untamed wilds: maps of King’s Landing; The Wall and Beyond the Wall; the Free Cities; and Slaver’s Bay, Valyria, and Sothyros.

Never before has the entire scope of Martin’s universe been so exhaustively and fascinatingly depicted. The maps in this beautiful, one-of-a-kind atlas will enrich your reading or viewing experience, provide another view of your favorite characters’ epic journeys, and open up captivating new worlds—plus, they’ll look great on any castle wall.
