I have been wondering about this for decades:
Why do TV stations use translators?
In the Seattle area several, but not all, the local TV stations use translators. What is the purpose and why are the translators channels all over the map? Example, local Fox Channel 13
also use 14, 25, 28, 43 and 7. And channel 7 is already in use by the local CBS station. If the goal is to be a repeater, why not simply stick with the Channel 13 in those areas where they are repeating the OTA signal?
I did some research on this topic and think I basically understand it. But I still have a couple questions.
1. It seems like most people use VideoReDo to edit out the commercials, but you also need Tivo Desktop. I only have Tivo Basic so I can't use Tivo Desktop. Does that mean I'm out of luck unless I upgrade to Tivo Plus?
2. When you transfer a show from Tivo to your computer, edit out the commercials, then transfer it back to Tivo, will the Tivo show the shortened time? For example, will it say a show that was formerly 1:00 be 0:41?
On a different subject, I'd like to transfer some Tivo programs to my VCR. Is it as simple as pressing play on the Tivo program and record on the VCR? Will I be able to do this with Tivo Basic?
Our XL4 has been working flawlessly for the past 4 months and this morning decided that tuner 4 would lay down and die on me. Has anyone else had this happen?
I went through the diagnostics and found tuners 0, 1 and 2 were all working with signal strengths of 92-98 though out the channel spectrum. Tuner 3 shows a constant signal strength of 0. In fact, it shows a dash mark where an actual strength number should be.
Are tuner issues common with the new XL4s? I've really enjoyed having 4 tuners. I haven't had to deal with any conflicts between family members!
I have had problems all weekend trying to download my off-Web Video menu Custom RSS video feeds from providers such as Blip.tv (for That Guy with the Glasses contributor content), Livid Lobster and off-directory TWiT shows (such as the TWiT HD feed). I don't know what the problem is, but I can stream these shows from their entries, they just won't download to the hard drive though after a request to download.
Did all the troubleshooting I could; soft and hard resets of the box, reset of my media switcher, the router and cable modem; nothing has worked. Stuff in the vidcast directory like CNet shows works fine and downloads as pushed out, but Custom RSS downloads I initiate aren't working. Hulu and YouTube are fine and everything is downloading just fine to the box.
Anyone else having this problem? Did some code get screwed up when they took out Music Choice?
From "Podcast of Interest"
A great interview with Jonah Nolan, about his superhero influences for the Person of Interest Series, and a little spoilery bit for Episode 3,,from the roundtable interviews at Comic-Con New York.
I have a Premiere XL 1TB. Today, I am watching a recorded football game and I wanted to check the Yankee/Tigers game. So I pressed pause on the recorded game and then swap. After a quick 10 second view, I swapped back to my paused recording, but it was now live. This, of course, is very frustrating as I now know the game score and missed a quarter of play.
Am I doing it wrong? Is the TiVo programming buggy?
After 2+ years with TiVo, I literally discovered collections today...
I thought I noticed a collections wish list button on one collection, but when I tried to relocate it on another collection I.e., AFI top 100, I could only go one by one.
Am I doing something wrong? That type of wish list word be kind of cool. Especially if top 10 style collections could be imported from others "must see" generated lists.
Bloomberg is reporting that late Friday the FCC granted encryption to the basic tier. Say goodbye to working clearqam tuners on any device that doesn't support modern CableCARDs and isn't connected to OTA.
To limit the costs that affected consumers may face due to encryption, we adopt our proposed consumer-protection measures that require a cable operator that chooses to encrypt the basic service tier to: (i) offer to existing subscribers who subscribe only to the basic service tier and do not use a set-top box or CableCARD, the subscriber’s choice of a set-top box or CableCARD on up to two television sets without charge for two years from the date of encryption; (ii) offer existing subscribers who subscribe to a level of service above “basic only” but use an additional television set to access only the basic service tier without the use of a set-top box or CableCARD at the time of encryption, the subscriber’s choice of a set-top box or CableCARD on one television set without charge for one year from the date of encryption; and (iii) offer existing subscribers who receive Medicaid,82 subscribe only to the basic service tier, and do not use a settop box or CableCARD, the subscriber’s choice of a set-top box or CableCARD on up to two television sets without charge for five years from the date of encryption.
METV showing several Ironside's now.
So psyched about tonight's show. AMC is brilliant in how they play all of the previous episodes in preparation.
to Quickly display green progress bar and then disappear while ff do this -
Select-play-select-pause-select "during playback of shocase film from Showcases menu"
after this code I press 30 sec skip button and progress bar disappears right away and while FF, I no longer see progress bar moving which I also like. However this setting doesn't remain after reboot and since my last reboot I can't get setting to stick. Can anyone confirm you have to be playing a showcase video to input code? The only showcase video I see is learn about TiVo stream and its not working for me. Could it be because I have a slow WiFi internet connection. After pressing pause for instance it can take up to 5 seconds for it to pause. If code is input correctly will clear banner quickly work while viewing the stream video? I keep trying code once and then going to live tv to test it because I'm also afraid if I do code twice the second time it will turn code off but I don't know if it works like that.
I have Comcast and I went to http://xfinitytv.comcast.net/tv-listings#
to look at the tv guide info after inputting my zipcode because my s4 hadn't connected to the internet for a while and my TiVo guide data was blank. On this Comcast website I was surprised to find a handful of new HD channels in the 800's most notably- Nat geo wild 806/ BBC 810/ history 2 805. For these channels "to be announced" is all is shown in the guide. Should I call TiVo nd report problem? I'm in sf bay area
Pardon me for doing a whole season thread, since there don't seem to be too many threads for this show.
The actor that plays Brick sure has grown up. And I was really sad (but not in a sad for him way, not that they wrote this in) that they seem to be ramping up his ticks to OCD level.
I'm also hoping we're done with Chris Kattan. I have never liked him.
Anyone else watching?
Replacing a failing hard drive in my TiVo Premiere. It's so far gone that I have to borrow a drive. That means lugging a PC to my Mom's and tearing her Premiere apart and copying her drive to a new one.
I have several PCs available for the job. And I don't want to spend 30 hours over there.
So, if I take a fast PC (i.e. Core i7, etc.) vs a slow PC (Pentium 4 3.4GHz) will the transfer speed be affected?
Also, how long would the copy process take approximately?
I have a Series 2 1400060 and a Series 2 2400080. Neither are working due to, I believe, bad hard drives. I see various Tivos for sale on Craigslist, for instance, a Series 2 TCD649080 for $30. Can I take the drive out of the TCD649080 and put it into one of my Tivos? Is there a way to know what will be compatible with my Tivos?

I gettin call interrupted fail 20 secs in on downloading tv guide. No settings changed on Tivo but this is the first time I have tried to download a guide since mid september 2012 so Tivo is out of guide and so 'dead' at the moment
A test call is 'successful'.
The phone line is ok, its also the line for my broadband and no problems there. I don't run both at the same time btw, the BB is physically disconnected when I connect the tivo to make the manual call, usually every 3-4 days
This may seem an odd arrangement but its just down to the fact that I dont have enough wires to connect Tivo and BB to line at same time.
Any thoughts please?
I can't seem to watch live tv, just now playing list. It just has message "searching for signal from cable box"
I want to set up Tivo in different rooms in my house and be able to view programs recorded on one DVR in either room in the house. One Tivo will be in the living room with the cable modem and router next to it so I can run a coax cable from the cable outlet to the modem and Tivo if needed and run an ethernet cable between the router and the Tivo. The second Tivo will be in another room where I cannot run a coax cabe from the router to the Tivo. How do I set this up?
Ok the new XL4 is cool but what happened to the OTA option? Some us of like to have the ability of OTA and its super clear signal and also the secondary channels....
