TiVo Premiere struggling to tune 2 channels simultaneously

Thu, 12/27/2012 - 21:21
Hello All,

I had a TiVo Premiere (my first) installed last week and my experience has been a nightmare so far. After resolving some of my issues I'm left with the most puzzling one that no one can seem to resolve: my TiVo is struggling to tune 2 channels simultaneously. There is nothing wrong with the tuners or the channels because I can independently tune any channel on either tuner and it will work. However when I flip to the other tuner, the previously tuned channel is gone and I get either a "not authorized" or "signal problem" error. After flipping around a bit that channel will come in, but then when I flip to the other tuner I get the same message for that channel. Now here comes the real kicker: this problem appears to be dependent on what channels are tuned on each tuner. For example, I can have 623 (TNT) and 681 (ESPN) tuned on both with no issues, but if I flip either to 660 (Travel) and then swap tuners I get an error on both 623 and 681. I've discovered a number of different channel combinations that either work or don't work. As you can imagine, this creates a nightmare when trying to record shows.

Does anybody have any suggestions? I'm puzzled and my cable company is puzzled. I've done multiple restarts. I've had another installer come out and swap cable cards and TiVo's, test the signal, etc. I have RCN in Boston and I'm using a leased RCN-branded box.

TiVo Stream works now, but the streaming part doesn't...

Thu, 12/27/2012 - 19:28
A while ago I posted this thread where I lamented my inability to get my Stream working on my network. Well, to make the long story short, I got bitten by the OpenWRT firmware I was using - I wasn't able to set up the DHCP server on my wireless router to send DHCP leases where the configured default gateway wasn't the router itself. I eventually gave up on that route and configured an ultralight DHCP server on my firewall, and after a few netfilter/iptables rules changes, the Stream grabbed a valid DHCP lease, connected to the TiVo Service and reported via the sysinfo page that it was working normally. A few pokes later and the TiVo apps on my iPhone and iPad were all set.

Now, the problem seems to be that the Stream can't actually stream anything to my iDevices - when I set up the apps the devices complained that the stream test wasn't working, and actually trying to stream something also failed with an error message. Since my original thread was sent I've since divided my LAN so that the wireless side is now isolated from the wired side with an additional NIC in my firewall. I placed the TiVo and the Stream on the wireless side to minimize the firewall changes that I would have to make, so the magical mDNS/multicast-foo that I wrestled with before should be flowing freely around the wireless network. Has anyone else run across this particular streaming problem yet, and if so, how did you fix it?

EDIT: The download functionality appears to be working a little bit, but it is EXTREMELY SLOW. I started a download of a one-hour show to the TiVo app on my iPad and the download is inching along at a snail's pace. I had expected the transcoding and download to go much faster than this; I knew it wouldn't be in one-quarter time, but it appears to be going slower than real-time. A portion of the details from the Clients page says:

Target Bitrate: 1240000
Encoding: 960x540 H.264 High Level 4.1

EDIT 2: Sorry for the forum spam - the problem was that the device's internal clock was wonky and it hadn't completed its first firmware update yet. After forcing a service call and restarting the Stream after it completed a firmware update, the Stream now works perfectly and will stream a 30min show at standard quality in less than 15 minutes!

Audio question: TV App vs. Tivo Audio

Thu, 12/27/2012 - 19:22
I have an audio question

I just bought a Panny TC-P65VT50 (awesome) which has built-in Netflix. My Tivo Premiere is connected via HDMI to a Pioneer VSX-820 AV receiver (no HDMI ARC).

I can use the TV's Netflix application and have it output audio to the AV receiver via optical audio, but Tivo audio keeps playing so I have two programs' audio at once coming out of the receiver. (Only solution - a hack - is to play a recording on Tivo and pause it. I don't want to spend 5 years having to do that.)

If I buy an HDMI ARC capable receiver, can I hook it up as shown and expect the sound problem to be solved?

TIVO -> HDMI -> ARC Receiver -> HDMI -> TV

Basically, will the HDMI ARC feature recognize that the TV is returning audio to the receiver when I use its Netflix app and cut off Tivo audio automatically?

Note: I know I could just use the Tivo Netflix app, instead of the TV's. I already am doing that - we have two Netflix accounts (adults vs. kids) and I want to access both - one via Tivo and one via TV app.

Stream Newbie: Unusable; constant buffering. Ideas?

Thu, 12/27/2012 - 19:07
My stream arrived today. Setup was straightforwarded. Every show on every device (2 iPhone 5's, 2 iPads) is plagued by constant buffering - like stopping every 5 secs for 3 secs or so. Premier XL4 is connected to router via CAT5; same for Stream. I don't know how to directly measure WIFI speed within my network, but all devices connect over WIFI to the internet and Speedtest reports 18-25Mbps, so doesn't seem to be a WIFI problem.

Have rebooted XL4 and Stream. Stream S/W version: 19.1.1-01-6.

What else to check?

Tivo Desktop and Windows 8

Thu, 12/27/2012 - 18:00
I apologize if this question has already been dealt with, but I just installed Tivo desktop on my new computer with Windows 8 OS and it can't find my DVR's.

Does anyone know anything about this configuration? Is it a problem with the OS or have I missed a setting somewhere?

Thanks in advance,

TiVo Premiere TCD746320 DVR Lifetime, 2TB drive, and Wireless N Adapter

Thu, 12/27/2012 - 16:53
I'm looking to sell my 2 tuner Premiere because I just got the 4 tuner version. This Tivo has been upgraded to a 2TB drive(WD20EURS) that was purchased on 12/6/2012.

I'm selling it with a wireless N adapter, the original 320G drive that came with the unit, as well as the original manuals, remote, and cables. Everything is in great condition, remote is basically unused.

I do not have the original box, but I will package it securely.

I'm looking to get 600 + shipping(based on where it's going).

Pairing old DVR Expander with new Premiere 4

Tue, 12/18/2012 - 21:52
I just upgraded my dead Tivo HD with a Premiere 4. I have been using a WD DVR Expander for a few years now and wanted to move it to my new Premiere 4. I transferred the shows I could from the old box to the new, and now I have unhooked the DVR Expander. I read that all I should have to do is hook it up to the Premiere, and it should recognize it and format it, but that didn't work. Is there something else I need to do to clear off the DVR Expander and have the new Tivo format and recognize it? Suggestions much appreciated.

BTW, I read about a kickstart 54, but couldn't get it to work. If I am able to get the kickstart to work, will that remove the recordings I transferred to the new Premiere? Thanks for the help.

PyTivo server appears grayed out in HDUI

Tue, 12/18/2012 - 16:19
I've just bought a new Premiere, and I notice that my PyTivo server appears grayed out and with an orange exclamation point icon in My Shows if I use the HDUI.

If I switch to the SDUI, it appears bright and with a PC icon, just as it does on my TiVo HD.

Regardless of which UI I use, I can access the PyTivo server, browse, and download content just fine, so obviously there's nothing actually wrong, but that display mode would suggest that not everything is quite right.

Has anyone else noticed this behavior? Is this something that has been addressed in a newer version of PyTivo? I haven't updated mine in several months, on the basis of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

With the S02 finale behind us, who do you think was ultimately behind the explosive ending?

Gossip Girl -- Series Finale (SPOILER, of course!)

Tue, 12/18/2012 - 14:08
Not sure if anyone is still watching, but I am. Last night was the last episode!! It's over. Of course, as many hoped, Kristin Bell WAS in the final episode. But not in the role people thought. Good ol' Dan "Lonely Boy" Humphrey is/was Gossip Girl.

Not totally sure how that works. The series opens with Serena being spotted as she returned to New York. THey revealed that Dan was the one that spotted her and took the photo. But how did he know who she was? And wasn't Gossip Girl an already established blog/website at that point.

Some notable cameos and returns. Jenny and Eric come back for Dan's wedding to Serena. And we see Vanessa get the news. Michael Bloomberg too, showing surprise it wasn't Dorota. :D Kristen Bell was there, as was Rachel Bilson, playing themselves. Rufus is with Lisa Loeb! (lucky!!)

Anywho... I'll miss this show. A guilty pleasure. Everyone and everything always looked fabulous.

Walking Dead TV Guide Article (Spoilers?)

Tue, 12/18/2012 - 11:18
Out of the corner of my eye at the grocery store, I spotted a TV guide magazine. It was the one with the Doctor Who image on the front.

Anyhow, I thought it said something like this:

Spoiler: Walking Dead. The inside scoop in the return of Shane

Did I misread it (I was reading the cover from a distance)? Wasn't this character conclusively retired from the series?

1600 Penn 12/17/2012

Tue, 12/18/2012 - 10:41
This episode will be repeated on January 10th, 2013.

I watched this and have mixed feelings. Parts of it were very funny. I loved everything having to do with the South American leaders. I liked seeing Miguel Sandoval again. The trophy wife question by the kid was funny. But there was a better sitcom about the President out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/That's_My_Bush!

Even though it was based on a real President, it was genuinely funny. It could only have been pulled off pre-9/11 but it was a better sitcom than 1600 Penn.

Happy Premiere Famiy

Tue, 12/18/2012 - 08:39
I just recently purchased a Premiere for my daughter as a college graduation gift. This brings all TiVos in our household into the Premiere family. She previously had a S2DT. It's amazing! Finally we have the TiVo setup we've wanted since the days we bought our first TiVo back in 2000.

Everything works seamlessly, we can all schedule using our iPads/iPhones. Watching from one box to another is painless. It's like we have one huge TiVo serving all TVs in our home... and 10 tuners to boot.

Our Premieres work great. Currently no issues (hope I'm not jinxing things). The HD menu improvements with the last update have increased usability of the To-Do list, Season Pass mgr. etc... and actually gotten me back to using those screens willingly.

I also use Kmttg and PyTiVo to archive shows we want to keep on our server. I can control almost all aspects of our TiVos from these programs, making organizational chores a breeze.

TiVo seems to be actively upgrading service and adding features (AOL, Spotify) and actually seems interested in saving their brand. (I had my worries over the past few years)

If they could just add an easy way to schedule on "any" available tuner and push conflicts to open tuners on other boxes I would truly be in heaven.

Thanks TiVo!

Spotify Comes to TiVo Premiere

TiVo Brings Spotify to TiVo Premiere Boxes

SAN JOSE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/18/12 -- TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ:

including digital video recorders (DVRs), today announced the
availability of leading music streaming service Spotify for its TiVo
Premiere boxes in the US. The introduction of Spotify to the host of
applications offered through TiVo is the latest example of the
company's efforts to deliver a complete, customizable entertainment
experience, from television to movies to music, in one box.

entertainment content, and not just television programming," said
Tara Maitra, SVP and general manager of content & media sales at TiVo

current playlists through their television. Once the Spotify app is

through their home theater system, as well as browse playlists,
albums and artists, and search for related artists using the TiVo
remote control.

"Integrating Spotify with the TiVo interface brings a more seamless
user experience to Spotify fans, and introduces TiVo fans to a new
way to listen to millions of songs for free," said Pascal de Mul,
Global Head of Hardware partnerships, Spotify. "Through this, users
will be able to stream their playlists through their TiVo and home
theater sound system and share their music with friends."

Spotify joins TiVo's current musical lineup of Pandora, Rhapsody,
Live365, Music Choice and songs connected from a PC or Mac music
library*. The Spotify app is expected to begin rolling out to
customers in the next 24 hours and TiVo customers will find it in the
Music & Photos menu.

To learn more about Spotify on TiVo or to sign up for a free, 30-day
trial of Spotify Premium, visit www.spotify.com/tivo.

* To stream songs connected from a PC or Mac, you will need TiVo
Desktop software for PC or TiVo Desktop software for Mac. TiVo
Desktop software is not required to use Spotify, Pandora, Rhapsody,
Live365 or Music Choice.

Increase in spam!

Tue, 12/18/2012 - 07:01
Seems there has been a huge increase in the amount of spam on the forums here lately. I used to see it once a month or so (I'm sure it was more often) - but now I'm seeing it multiple times a day.

I had a forum once that had a lot of spam and turned on a feature that you had to answer a question when you registered - not sure if this board has that or not - but maybe you can look into something else to combat spam.

S2: Stuck Welcome Powering up

Mon, 12/17/2012 - 21:40
Picked this Series 2 TDC240040 that gets stuck on Welcome. Powering up... the hard drive was replaced by the previous owner at some point, I replaced the ribbon cable and I can hear the drive spin up at power up.

I also tried putting my old maxtor drive from my TDC24004A however that exhibited the same result. I took another drive I had and used winmfs to restore a backup (240080) but I'm guessing it can't use that backup as it didn't work either.

I'm trying to get this machine working without laying out more money than I could have purchased a working unit for.

Perhaps someone might have the proper image for this unit that I could try?

To all those who have hated on this show recently: Suck It!

That was stunning. And sweet. And wonderful.
