Engadget Review

Engadget has chimed in on their review of the Tivo Mini:

Swap Wireless-G for MoCA Adapter?

Mon, 03/11/2013 - 09:09

I don't know if anyone here on the TCF would be interested in such a trade, but I figured I would give it a shot anyway.

I have a brand-new in the box, unused, TiVo Wireless-G adapter which I got as part of a bundle. I did open the package to check the contents before putting it away (common sense), but otherwise it is untouched.

Is there anyone that received one of those Actiontec MoCA adapters with a bundle that they are not using and would like to swap?

It might be a longshot, but maybe there is someone out there that has an unneeded/unused Actiontec MoCA adapter from TiVo that is collecting dust for whatever reason and might want to flip it for something they can use.

shark tank 3.8.13

Mon, 03/11/2013 - 08:25
wow the kids party people needed a new spokesman. Also the heavy editing was really obvious. i think they marketed their idea wrong and the sharks took the sponsorship in the wrong way. of course i do agree if sponsors were really lined up they wouldnt be in the tank. but maybe the producers saw a successfull thing and let them in the show to get their 5% cut. shows you that the show can be 'rigged' a certain way.

i'm shocked about the cowboy, i wonder how much time passed before daymond really said yes. appeared instant on the show

the phone protection thing seemed like a spam email from the get go plus who wants to wait 3 days for a phone. more than 1 person will definitely abuse the system and they will be out of business very soon

bean bag buy got very lucky and he knew it. the other sharks were probably shocked as was i.

TiVo Launches TiVo Mini, Extends Whole-Home Viewing Experience

Big Footprint, Small Price Extends Live, Recorded, Video On Demand and OTT Content Around the House

SAN JOSE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/11/13 -- TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), the creator of digital video recorders (DVRs) and a leader in advanced television services, today announced the retail availability of TiVo(R) Mini, an all-purpose companion device that allows TiVo users to access apps and affordably extend the viewing of live TV, recorded and streaming content, as well as on-demand* programming, to rooms throughout their homes without an additional TiVo DVR.

TiVo Mini is not a DVR, but extends the value of a TiVo four-tuner DVR, the TiVo Premiere 4 or the TiVo Premiere XL4, using one of the DVR's tuners to enable the control and access of content on a TV in another room of the house. TiVo Mini features a much smaller footprint than a DVR and users will enjoy the same intuitive and award-winning TiVo user interface. They will be able to control their main TiVo DVR by scheduling recordings and WishList(R) searches, among other activities. Users will even be able to start a show in the living room and finish it on a TiVo Mini in another room.

"The TiVo Mini answers the demand for a simplified whole-home viewing experience and a more cost-effective solution than putting another DVR or cable set-top box in another room," said Jim Denney, GM and VP of Product Marketing for TiVo Inc. "With so many viewing options in a compact form factor, TiVo Mini makes it easier to get more value from your existing home entertainment set up by further enabling you to watch what you want, where you want it."

Measuring six-inches long and just over an inch wide, TiVo Mini's minimalist design streamlines the entertainment center in additional rooms of the home and offers access to integrated apps, including YouTube, Hulu Plus, Pandora, and Spotify, with more apps planned. In addition to TV, movies, and music, the TiVo Mini will include a gaming component. Users can access and play a variety of games, including Quizzmaster, Black Jack and Wordsmith. Through Google Picasa and Photobucket integrations on the TiVo Mini, users can also
access their photos on TV screens throughout the home.

TiVo Mini Specifications and Requirements:

-- Requires 4-tuner TiVo DVR
-- Compatible TiVo DVR models include:
-- TiVo Premiere 4
-- TiVo Premiere XL4 (previously Premiere Elite)
-- Requires Coax/MoCA or Ethernet broadband connection. (Wireless
networks are not supported)
-- Dimensions: 1.25" x 6.12" x 6.12"
-- Weight: 0.78 lbs
-- Requires that the TiVo Mini be installed and activated on the same
account and network as the main DVR

Pricing and Availability
The TiVo Mini is now available through tivo.com/mini and will be available March 17th, 2013 from authorized retailers for $99.99, with a monthly subscription fee of just $5.99 for a 12-month commitment. Alternatively, users can opt to purchase the TiVo Mini with lifetime service for a one-time cost of $249.98. For more information on TiVo Mini or any of TiVo's products, please

Once Upon A Time 3/10/2013 "The Miller's Daughter"

Mon, 03/11/2013 - 06:41
I should know better than to ask...

Why the total freak out that Cora has been killed? Just prior to this they were armed with swords facing off against Cora and Regina. Wasn't the goal of that to kill Cora (and possibly Regina)?

Since we knew somebody was getting killed in this episode I was betting it was going to be Neal/Baelfire.

Tivo HD with lifetime for $150!

Sun, 03/10/2013 - 23:08
hmmmm.... I don't know if this is the right place to post this. If it isn't please just delete it and don't give me another infraction, Mr./Ms. Moderator. One more and that would violate my parole and I'll be back the big house for life. :o
Just kidding.
this guy has Tivo for sale on craigslist
I met him today, but when I called TiVo to verify that it had lifetime they said that on March 24th it would have lifetime as that is when his monthly contract ran out and his credit card would be charged for the lifetime at the $99 rate. They told me to wait till then to buy it. I guess he could cancel the payment before March 24th and I would have a TiVo without lifetime and be out of the $150 I was going to pay him. So I didn't buy it.
But then as I drove away, why couldn't TiVo just charge him for the $99 right now. What difference did it make if he had it paid up till the 24th!!?? He hadn't even plugged it in for weeks since he bought a Premiere.
But anyway, if anyone in the Denver area is interested in a Tivo with lifetime for cheap, it is still listed.

Mini Ethernet/MoCa question

Sun, 03/10/2013 - 22:51
I have Comcast and to get both the internet and cable to perform the best, they put in two lines, one for each. My "internet" line comes in and goes directly into my cable modem. The other cable outlets found all over the house are attached to the other "cable" line.

In my particular case, MoCA is not going to work is it? As I understand it, you put the MoCA unit before the cable modem. That in turn is supposed turn the cable outlets in MoCA cable outlets, correct?? Maybe I'm not understanding MoCA , so please feel free to explain how I am wrong.

I know Tivo says that you can't use wifi adaptors in the Mini units. Could you instead use an Apple Express 2 to wirelessly extend the network and use the ethernet port out of the Express to ethernet input for the Mini?

Trying to figure out whether to wait for a 6 tuner with a Mini or a 4 tuner now and a 4 tuner later

XL4 Picture but no video?

Sun, 03/10/2013 - 21:59
I have an XL4 and Comcast cable. My TiVo was acting strangely today--I got no video, just a black screen, for live TV as well as recorded shows.

I still had picture--that is, I got the TiVo menus, show info, progress bar at the bottom. Anything TiVo generated was fine, anything off the cable was all black. This even happened for old shows that had been good.

I rebooted the TiVo, and that resolved the issue. I'm left wondering, is this a symptom of something I should attend to, or just one of those 'sometimes you gotta reboot' things?

Any of you folks see this behavior?

Amazing Race - OAD 3/10/12

Sun, 03/10/2013 - 19:58
How do you switch tasks at a detour after attempting it fully once and think to not use the express pass? Another thing that didn't make sense to me is they get to the second detour and don't see anyone there, yet still go for it. I am not sure the strategy behind that move.

How Much Disk Spaced Used?

Sun, 03/10/2013 - 19:13
Does anyone know how I can figure out how much disk space I have used on my TiVo HD? I'm getting a new Premiere 4 this week and need to decide if I need to upgrade the disk. Ordinarily I might have bought the Premiere XL4 but they have a deal going on until tomorrow for the regular Premiere 4, a TiVo Streamer and a TiVo MoCa all for $300 (essentially, the Streamer is free). I've been waiting for a good deal on a 4 tuner TiVo and it seems like this is the one. The Premiere 4 has a 500 gb drive (75 hours HD recording time).

Bad sectors causing GSOD...Clone drive or other option?

Sun, 03/10/2013 - 14:38
Have 2 TB upgraded Premiere HD (Samsung F4).

Got the GSOD and tried a few kickstart codes that didn't fix anything (54, 58).

I've put the drive in my computer and run some drive diagnostics...looks like there are bad sectors, but not very many at all (<50 sectors for the entire drive).

I assume they must be in an important spot and thus causing the Tivo to crap out.

Here's my situation/questions:
1) I still have the original 320GB that came with the Tivo, sitting untouched and ready to use to reimage
2) I can get another 2TB drive to use as a clone drive as well.
3) The existing 2TB still functions fine enough to transfer data, so it's not "dead"

- Should I just clone the 2TB drive (thus transferring all good sectors) and let the Tivo try to fix itself? i.e., are the bad sectors to blame for the in-built tivo function's inability to fix itself, or is it likely because the OS is FUBARed?

- If the above wouldn't likely work, I'd like to retain all the shows on the drive. I was wondering if I could image the 320GB onto a new drive, expand/supersize, and then transfer the partitions with the shows from the broken drive to it somehow. Or, conversely, image the 2TB first to the new drive, then take selected OS partitions from the 320GB and plop onto there.

- Since the 320GB is from close to when I got the Tivo 2 years ago, should I at least first put it in the Tivo and allow itself to get the latest/greatest OS updates, THEN use it to image/overwrite?

- The final, least palatable option, would be to just start from scratch with the old 320GB and a new 2TB.

Any advice as to which path to take and/or MFS Tools commands to accomplish this sort of thing would be appreciated.

Can't access Netflix when sdv box is connected?

Sun, 03/10/2013 - 14:19
So disconnected TA(tivo/sdv adapter supplied by TW) and reboot & setup Netflix ok...Then reconnect TA and can't access video on demand menu for Netflix:( any work arounds? Or do I just choose one or the other and call it a failure with my HD units..:(

Remove "Play Bar" when pausing?

Sun, 03/10/2013 - 14:06
Sometimes I want to pause my recording (or live TV) for the purpose of copying down or reading some info from the screen shot. (Chuck Lorre's vanity cards at the end of the Big Bang Theory!)

There are instances when the "Play bar" at the bottom of the screen is blocking the screen and I have to wait quite some time for it to disappear while in pause mode. Then I can read and/or copy what I want to.

Is there a remote shortcut to hide it immediately?

TIVO loses memory when not updated?

Sun, 03/10/2013 - 11:09
Maybe this doesn't belong here and maybe it's just whining about something I should know, but looking for comments if you have any.

Due to playing with using "Phone as Hotspot", first with no, then later with some sucess, my phone hit its data limit. The phone has been unused as hotspot for a week or two now. The TIVO did NOT reconnect to my DSL connection. I remember earlier that it seemed to search out and find neighbors' unsecured w/l connections. I've reconnected now to my DSL but had to re-enter security code :( I received a message today saying my "guide" or whatever had run out due to the lack of updating. To my dismay I found that scheduled programs to be recorded were skipped. I didn't lose my season passes and I think my to do list was there for upcoming shows. (I think I looked before updating.)

This leads me to wonder....
Does it make sense to have to re-enter a security code for a prviously used connection?

Would it make sense to display warnings a little sooner?

Is there any good reason the TIVO shouldn't continue to record shows at the previous days and times even w/o a guide update?

Thanks for listening :)

DST, time to clean your season passes

Sun, 03/10/2013 - 10:35
(I figured I'd post this here as opposed to the off-topic forums, since it is TiVo-related)

I have been doing this for myself for a while, and thought I'd share.

Daylight Savings Time transition is time to clean your Tivo. It's time to remove your "extra" Season Passes, shows you don't watch, shows that were cancelled or have ended, and shows you only watch because you were recording them. So, tell us which ones you're deleting, and tell us how many remain.

For me, it's: Fringe, The Closer, The Simpsons, Setup, Glee, Cougartown on ABC, STar Trek: TNG on BBCA, Eureka, Aftermath with William Shatner, Swamp Brothers, An Idiot Abroad, The Exes, Life's Too Short, Katy Brand's Big Ass Show, Stephen Hawking's Sci Fi Masters, Top Gear (US), Don't Trust the B in Apt. 23, Rookie Blue, Sullivan and Son, Ben and Kate, 1600 Penn, and Dan Vs.

22 removed, 121 passes still remain.

Daylight Saving Time

Sun, 03/10/2013 - 10:10
I live in an area that does not observe DST, but all my TiVo boxes have just "sprung ahead" I'm screwed.

This is something only TiVo can fix. I'll miss each and every recording by an hour until they do, unless I choose to manually record everything, in which case, all will be mislabeled.
